The Palin record on earmarks
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Here’s a pretty comprehensive rundown of Palin’s documented record on requesting earmarks. In her second term as Wasilla mayor, she got a total of $27 million in federal earmarks for a town of fewer than 9,000 people.
As governor, she requested $254 million in earmarks last year, and $197 million in earmarks this year. As the Seattle Times story notes, that’s more per capita than requested by any other state in the union:
“Palin’s requests to Congress came at a time of huge federal deficits, while Alaska state revenue was soaring due to rising oil prices and a major tax increase on oil production that Palin signed into law in late 2007.
As a result, Alaska this year was in such a money-flushed condition — with no state income tax or sales tax and total state revenues of $10 billion, double the previous year’s — that Palin gained legislative approval for $1,200 cash payments to every Alaskan.”
This, from the candidate who said Wednesday night that she “championed reform to end the abuses of earmark spending by Congress.”
My friends, that is not reform we can believe in.

Nobody’s even mentioned her record on the environment…. She champions aerial hunting of wolves AND bears, including sows with cubs. She opposes protection of beluga whales, claims that global warming is a “farce”, and will say or do anything to promote drilling in ANWR and more pipelines crossing critical habitats. When you add that to here vindictive actions towards her ex-brother-in-law, and oppodition to women’s choice up to and including the use of cntraceptives by married couples…… Why would anyone even THINK of voting for her as Vice-President?

From Jay’s own source.
But earmarks have never been a dirty word in Alaska, a huge state dotted with small communities that have enormous dollar needs for sewers, roads and other projects.
So if the state is huge and the needs for infrastructure are great let’s attack them on the basis of their small population.

I have a couple issues with Sarah. First, Alaska has a multi-billion dollar budget surplus so why does she seek earmarks for her state? What a waste of OUR taxpayer money. Second, at the end of the day, regardless of how nice she looks, she is an evangelical Republican. This usually means forcing their religious beliefs on everyone else and given her record as Mayor when she tried to get books banned at the public library it doesn’t speak to well on what she might do if she were to become VP. As I’ve read somewhere else she is nothing more than a George Bush who can speak better. She will get the GOP base energized that’s for sure. She will touch all of the buttons they like - drill more, environment less, saber rattle more, diplomacy less - all the things George and Dick have done over the last 8 years. You have to ask yourself the question - are you and is the country better off after 8 years of a Republican administration and 12 years of Republican control of Congress?

One of the persistent memes in the Republican line of attack against Barack Obama is the notion that he is an elitist, whereas the G.O.P. represent real working Americans like Levi “F-in’ Redneck” Johnston.
It caught our attention, then, when First Lady Laura Bush and would-be First Lady Cindy McCain took the stage Tuesday night wearing some rather fancy designer clothes. So we asked our fashion department to price out their outfits.
Laura Bush Oscar de la Renta suit: $2,500 Stuart Weitzman heels: $325 Pearl stud earrings: $600–$1,500 Total: Between $3,425 and $4,325
Cindy McCain Oscar de la Renta dress: $3,000 Chanel J12 White Ceramic Watch: $4,500 Three-carat diamond earrings: $280,000 Four-strand pearl necklace: $11,000–$25,000 Shoes, designer unknown: $600 Total: Between $299,100 and $313,100
Wow! No wonder McCain has so many houses: his wife has the price of a Scottsdale split-level hanging from her ears.
(All prices except Laura’s shoes and Cindy’s watch are estimates, and the jewelry prices are based on the assumption that the pieces are real.)

As to it being 57 million less in ear marks. If a crook steals less does it make him honest? Isn’t she railing against earmarks? As to it being an attack on a spread out small pop state. Why should I pay for their infrastructure when their state is in surplus from oil revenue? For all the talk about self reliance it seems odd to hear the feds should have to subsidize someone’s lifestyle because it’s more money to build sewers in Alaska.
What really confuses me is the tolerance for flip flopping on the right this time around.
If Theresa Heinz’s wealth and birthplace made her unpalatable to the right and, Michele Obama is excoriated for misspeaking(she says) about being proud of America for the first time then why isn’t a husband who belonged to the AIP a few years ago an issue. Isn’t that the party that loves America so much they want to leave it and form their own country? Isn’t that the party whose founder spits on the American flag? Isn’t that the party whose convention Sarah Palin spoke at this year….
She gave a great speech but, man I think Noonan and Murphy had it right on that open mic. She has a real supermarket variety of recent baggage. Also what exactly were the unfair questions they have been asking in the press? Is it wrong to question someone’s readiness?, An investigation of misuse of power? Foreign policy experience? McCain’s vetting process. Just because you don’t like the answer doesn’t mean it was an unfair question.
Also will the right PLEASE stop taking about Bristol I am sick of hearing about how some unknown “they” I can’t find on tv or the newspaper are dragging her through the mud.

I think some of you are underestimating the percentage of voters for whom Sarah Palin lacks the standing to make this critique of Barack Obama. To many voters, she is either entirely unknown, or is known as an US Weekly caricature of a woman who eats mooseburgers and has a pregnant daughter. To change someone’s opinion, you have to do one of two things. Either, you have to be a trusted voice of authority, or you have to persuade them. Palin is not a trusted voice of authority — she’s much too new. But neither was this a persuasive speech. It was staccato, insistent, a little corny. It preached to the proverbial choir. It was also, as one of my commentors astutely noted, a speech written by a man and for a man, but delivered by a woman, which produces a certain amount of cognitive dissonance.
I’ve always seen Governor L-o-l-a as a kind of “man’s man”. She has an obvious appeal to some of the “gender confused” rightwingnuts here, and elsewhere.

Earmarks are for new projects not ongoing state costs. So, yeah you can eliminate them and not cause a problem. They are one time budgetary line items. insert the insult of your choice here. Eliminating 500000 to finance halibut research or not asking for money from the federal govt for sidewalks(for real) can be eliminated. Does the federal govt put in your sidewalks? She found a way to spend that bridge to Nowhere money someplace else or didn’t you know Alaska got the same total dollar amount it was getting before that earmark was cut?
If Alaska was constrained then why not ask for less earmarks before asking to give every Alaskan man woman and child 1200 dollars. Doesn’t it irk you they get 1200 back from the state and then ask and recieve more federal dollars per capita than any other state by a wide margin?

Nice try Jay, desperation becomes you. Its called political survival. Her predecessors had the state addicted to earmarks, and as long as Washington is slinging it out, she had better get AK’s fair share, and wean them off of it as she can. Which she was doing. Its what you do with the money after that that defines your ethics and she used it for infrastructure improvement and to fund a natural gas pipeline. Then gave money back to the citizenry. Let’s see what she does with earmarks, once she’s in Washington.
Truth is, she pinned Obama’s ears back last night. No small feat, literally or figuratively.

At 22, Karl/a Rove fell in love with 27 year-old Dumbya at first sight. Later he would remake the object of his affections into Guvnuh of Texas, and parlay this empty-headed twang-talkin’ faux West Texas cowboy into the White House. America’s tens of millions of rubes and goobers loved Dumbya almost as much as he did.
But even the rubes and goobers have started to turn their back on the chickenhawk cowboy after his many disasters and screw-ups. Rudi G. would be their “man” this time - was it the many drag pix? His name ending in a vowel? His mistresses? His being from Jew York City? - well, maybe not.
Go west, Republicans, but not too far… this time only as far as Tennessee - you know, homespun Daniel Boone and Davey Crockett country. Old Uncle Fred. goober extraordinaire, would be their man - was it his falling asleep during speeches? looking even older than, well, John McCain? - alas, this was not to be either.
The Huckleberry? Plays a guitar, just too nice for the rednecks, although plenty stupid enough. Romney? Too Mormon, looks like he showers every day and combs his hair - too slick for the bumpkinry….
Well, Old McCain will have to do. Arizona, that’s a red state. Tortured and beaten for 5 years - will remind the red staters of growing up in their families, well why not.
Uh oh. They like him a little better than the chickenhawk cowboy, but not much.

I am not a liberal Earmarks exploded from 2000-2006 and only started contracting last year. In case you hadn’t been paying attention those were “conservative’ congressess. It was under the same “conservative” led govt our national debt doubled. Now, I am not talking about the deficit. I am talking about the 219 year old national debt which went from 4 trillion to close to 9 trillion under the “conservatives”. ok, so much for fiscal conservatives. You know what’s scariest? Even with Social Security running a surplus they doubled our debt. I am a gamble but I am not willing to double down and give them 4 more years. They need to spend some time in the wilderness and refind their principles for anything to change. There has been nothing conservative about our foriegn policy the last 8 years. It has gone on a course radically different than the previous 211 years.

Back in 1994 another maverick Republican took over the party’s voice and created something called the “contract with America”.
It worked so well that the American people responded overwhelmingly in favor and voted in a Republican majority in congress.
Even Bubba Clinton declared the era of big government to be over.
The CWA was such a runaway success that the liberal media and beltway establishment became terrified. It suddenly dawned on them that there were other ideas out there that people believed in and would respond to. Traditional ideas of smaller government, personal responsibility and lower taxes.
That same terror has come back in the form of Sarah Palin. A beautiful, bright, conservative hockey mom that people believe in and certainly can identify with.
She is the future of politics and the beltway wobble heads know that. That is why they MUST destroy her. She is too much in the way of the media, beltway, academic mind control complex just as Newt Gingrich was.

Jay,
Good point.
You have just proven the conservative Republican’s points about the main reasons for eliminating earmarks. If earmarks are eliminated, won’t this stop the unnecessary requests for and drain on taxpayers as well?
Also, won’t this earmark elimination also limit the illegitimate access to politicians through special interest groups as well? Is that what you REALLY object to Jay or are you just ignorant of the big picture?
Some of the (power hungry and ignorant) folks in the media still don’t get it!
You assign guilt by association - it’s just like saying that if someone was a smoker and now has quit, you would still tag them as a smoker and not give credit that they took the “personal responsibility” to quit and save the health care expenses of not only theirs, but the other insured people who pay for their “poor decision making”.

Better yet, are you (or anyone at the AJC) ever going to pick up the Washington Times story on Biden’s overt conflict of interests regarding his sons, brothers and lobbyists? This from the guys who are going to change Washington?
If you are going to point out hypocrisy, be consistant. Otherwise, you just show what a lousy partisan hack you are.
One last thing, Biden himself has criticized the media’s disgusting performance this week. Maybe someday you hacks will come out of your tiny bubble and see how much the rest of the country, Democrats included, despises you.
From GMA:
“BIDEN: The truth is some of the stuff that the press has said about — and others have said about the governor, I think, are outrageous. I just think the way the governor handled it has just been — I’ve been admiring of the way she’s handled it and I think this stuff about how can she be a governor and a vice president, raise three kids? Come on. That’s — whoever those folks are don’t know any strong women. They haven’t lived in a household like mine where my wife, you know, raised our kids, dealt with my career, taught full time. She’s in a classroom today right now and she earned her doctorate at night. You know, or, you know, my whole family. Wrong !
True - they both are opinion writers (Wooten or the right and Bookman on the left).
The difference is, Wooten will from time to time call a spade a spade and nail a Republican/Conservative for something (i.e., immigration policy).
I have never seen Bookman do that or if he has it is so rare as to be almost nonexistant.

Yet it is Barack Obama, son of a single mother and grandson of a Kenyan goatherd, who has suffered more damage from the perception that he is arrogant and out of touch. As the Onion headlined: “Portrayal of Obama as Elitist Hailed as Huge Step Forward for African Americans.” Democrats are left to fume in bafflement.
Oh my.

So I just think some of the stuff said has just been over the top, totally unfair and I think it has been sexist and I think the way the governor has handled it has been admirable.”

Here is a great quote from liberal celeb Annette Benning. She is bleating about how Palin’s appeal to women is a waste of time because:
“”But most of the people I know that were interested in voting for Hillary are voting for Obama.”
Such typical liberal echo chamber thinking. Most of my friends never considered voting for Obama, but I am not stupid enough to think that means the guy does not have crossover appeal.
Liberals are wonderful in their naive arrogance that their views as “the truth” and that is should be obvious. Fortunately for us McCain backers, most people don’t live in the tiny little liberal bubble.

See Jay? That bit of worthless crap got you some clicks. Your advertisers received no value from those clicks and certainly no other readers got value from it.
It’s neat how you guys took Henry Grady’s newspaper with a long history of journalistic excellence, community service and advertiser value and turned it into a crap hate speech forum, which benefits nobody but you and your bosses.

Corporate CEO’s retiring with $250 MILLION payout while their companies go bankrupt!

Tell me again how the Republicans justify the sermons from Palin’s church. Probably the same way they did with Bush’s flock of preachers. This preacher sounds like a genuine flake to me and she has bought it lock, stock and barrel. Well, here’s a hot item for you. Bush sucks.
The church runs a number of ministries providing help to poor neighborhoods, care for children in need, and general community services. But Pastor Kalnins has also preached that critics of President Bush will be banished to hell; questioned whether people who voted for Sen. John Kerry in 2004 would be accepted to heaven; charged that the 9/11 terrorist attacks and war in Iraq were part of a war “contending for your faith;” and said that Jesus “operated from that position of war mode.” It is impossible to determine how much Wasilla Assembly of God has shaped Palin’s thinking. She was baptized there at the age of 12 and attended the church for most of her adult life. When Palin was inaugurated as governor, the founding pastor of the church delivered the invocation. In 2002, Palin moved her family to a nondenominational church, but she continues to worship at a related Assembly of God church in Juneau. Moreover, she “has maintained a friendship with Wasilla Assembly of God and has attended various conferences and special meetings here,” Kalnins’ office said in a statement. “As for her personal beliefs,” the statement added, “Governor Palin is well able to speak for herself on those issues.” Clearly, however, Palin views the church as the source of an important, if sometimes politically explosive, message. “Having grown up here, and having little kids grow up here also, this is such a special, special place,” she told the congregation in June. “What comes from this church I think has great destiny.” And if the political storm over Barack Obama’s former pastor Jeremiah Wright is any indication, Palin may face some political fallout over the more controversial teachings of Wasilla Assembly of God. If the church had a political alignment, it would almost surely be conservative. In his sermons, Kalnins did not hide his affections for certain national politicians. During the 2004 election season, he praised President Bush’s performance during a debate with Sen. John Kerry, then offered a not-so-subtle message about his personal candidate preferences. “I’m not going tell you who to vote for, but if you vote for this particular person, I question your salvation. I’m sorry.” Kalnins added: “If every Christian will vote righteously, it would be a landslide every time.” Months after hinting at possible damnation for Kerry supporters, Kalnins bristled at the treatment President Bush was receiving over the federal government’s handling of Hurricane Katrina. “I hate criticisms towards the President,” he said, “because it’s like criticisms towards the pastor — it’s almost like, it’s not going to get you anywhere, you know, except for hell. That’s what it’ll get you.” Much of his support for the current administration has come in the realm of foreign affairs. Kalnins has preached that the 9/11 attacks and the invasion of Iraq were part of a “world war” over the Christian faith, one in which Jesus Christ had called upon believers to be willing to sacrifice their lives.

Blue states pay more taxes than red states, this is a simple fact. Much of the tax revenues collcted in Large states like New Jersey find their way to less populated states like Alaska. Most blue staters reconize the need, and don’t complain much about it. Really a simple thank you is all that’s required. Instead they sent us “W”.

Do you think that Palin believes that crap that her preacher spews. How about you, Andy. Do you believe it. Try it if you dare. Say “Bush SUCKS”. Uh, Biden supported the so called “Bridge to Nowhere” in 2005. So it was a good idea then right? Look it up. Sounds like Barack to me… who voted against the war before he supported it or…voted for the war before he was against it…lemme see, no he voted before he thought about it.. Then there’s the Demo Hero Bubba, BJ’s in the Oval office…lied to Congress and he’s a freakin’ hero at the Dem convention? McCain has never taken earmarks. Barack was a buddy with Rev. Wright for 20 years and dumped his mentor when the heat got to close. Don’t reckon he really believes like the Rev. Look at it like this, if I went to a Klan meeting every week for 20 years…someone might get the idea I was a bigot. It’s a confusing election year, eh? Oh, Barack’s lack of experience trumps Sarah’s lack of experience? How does that exactly work?
