We’re drowning in crocodile tears

Over at the conservative Redstate.com, prominent right-wing blogger Erick Erickson claims that the Obama campaign was secretly peddling ugly rumors that Sarah Palin is not the mother of four-month Trig.
What facts does Erickson offer for that allegation, which if true would be quite damning? Why, none whatsoever. Zero. To the contrary, his pathetic “case” is built on exactly the kind of pure speculation and fantasy that he is allegedly trying to condemn when others indulge in it. Go take a look and judge for yourself.
Among his “evidence:” “Barack Obama himself admits he reads Daily Kos.” Noooooo!!!
You’re also seeing claims that the existence of such nasty rumors somehow typifies liberals.
This, from the same people who for years gleefully trafficked in rumors that Hillary Clinton is a lesbian, that she killed Vince Foster, that Bill Clinton raped somebody and had an illegitimate love child with a black woman, that he helped run a cocaine-smuggling ring, that he had an affair with Eleanor Mondale, etc.
And then there was the time in the 2000 GOP primaries when someone in the Republican machine smeared John McCain — that was back in his maverick days — with allegations that his adopted daughter was actually the product of his interracial affair with a woman not his wife. A proud moment, that one.
We also shouldn’t forget the time that a prominent Republican senator cracked a joke — in public, no less — about the Clintons’ only child. “Why is Chelsea Clinton so ugly?” the senator asked. “Because Janet Reno is her father.”
That man was of course John McCain.
So please, spare me the sanctimony.

Jay, Why are we still talking about this stuff? The Obama Campaign was improperly tied to Daily Ko’s by the Redstate bloggers. It is just a sad commentary on how little the people of America cherish their unique freedom of speech that they hide in the whispering corridors of the blogsphere to generate rumors. This can all be traced back to Richard Nixon. When he came down by the reporting of the Watergate scandal big fish hunting by the press magnified every transgression. And now with the Internet and the anonymity of blogs too many people speak and repeat the unspeakable. At some point polite society will have to take back over or we will eventually collapse as a modern day Babble.

I sure hope McCain and his advisors listened to Obama’s acceptance speech. Maybe they will be moved to keep out of the gutter for the next couple of months, as he urged. My God, wouldn’t that be wonderful, to have a presidential campaign focused on the issues, not merely on innuendo and smears? I think the American people are ready. Don’t forget who started running ads with Paris Hilton and Britney to mock Obama. There is a very long and sordid history of similar bottom-dweller tactics. Now, maybe, the Republicans might be ready to give up on posturing and smears and focus on issues. It might be a good tactic for them. Let’s see if they’re up to it…

It seems to me like Redstate pretty well backs it’s claims with evidence. one would think it would follow that our host would have similarly debunked each claim rather than just going into a full throated rage in protection of The One.
Had the media investigated Obama they way are turning over every stone with regard to Sarah Palin’s family the guy wouldn’t be able to get a job as a dog catcher. Instead Jay and his pals investigate the Republican and investigate the detractors of the Democrat.

RW: what you’re seeing is not “solid evidence”, but circumstancial evidence, some of it quite weak. C’mon “Obama has Kos in his RSS reader!” Jeez. Weak stuff overall. Now, I’m not saying that Obama staffers didn’t push the story behind the scenes. I’m just saying that this guy’s case is weak and unsubstantiated without knowing who his “sources” were. Which of course, we won’t and he doesn’t have to divulge them to anyone… unlike at a “mainstream media” outlet where the editor needs to know that the sources are good ones.
And if you think the media hasn’t looked into all those stupid rumors, you’re crazy. Scooping each other is what they do for sport. But it’s gotta be something that’s real. Made-up stuff doesn’t fly so well.
And Palin is indeed the new shiny toy for the media to play with. So she’s going to get tossed around, investigated under a microscope, etc. until we know more than we really wanted to know about certain aspects of her life. The more tittilating, the better, since that’s what sells newspapers and TV ads.
On the other hand, if she’s such a rock-solid candidate that everyone seems to love, why hasn’t she talked to the press since she was picked to be McCain’s running mate? I’ll bet she gets kept bottled up tighter than Dick Cheney’s undisclosed location.

Innuendo, rumors, gossip – based on no evidence or supposition - is wrong whether done by the left or the right. A key difference here, though, is Redstate paints itself as “the leading blog for right of center activists.” Ideology, not party. DailyKos, though, portrays itself as not a liberal blog, but a Democratic blog, embracing liberals, centrists and conservatives. They state their battle is not one of ideology. So your statement “you’re seeing claims that the existence of such nasty rumors somehow typifies liberals” would more properly read “you’re seeing claims that the existence of such nasty rumors somehow typifies conservative activists and Democrats.”
The latter part of that is in reference to your 5:24 of “The McCain campaign is trying to cast the announcement as a decision forced on the Palin family by squalid rumors in the left-wing blogosphere.” Actually, I believe DailyKos was the engine for the rumors – and the rumor was not just that the daughter was pregnant, but was in fact the mother of Gov Palin’s Downs-syndrome baby. That was an ugly rumor, without basis, which led to many despicable comments. I rather think the story of the daughter’s pregnancy was about to come out – Alaskan journalists were preparing to run the story. DailyKos attacks advanced the timetable.
But past bad behavior should not be used as justification for current bad behavior. Sen Obama did not reference any “well, Republicans and conservatives did it, too” in his condemnation of the conduct of those attacking the Palin family. He even cited his own mother – 18 when he was born – in his remarks.
So a larger issue, to me, is, if Sen Obama is about “change” – change in how gov’t operates, change in how political opponents come together for the common good, change in how issues are discussed, debated and resolved – if Sen Obama can’t even effect change in the conduct of his most ardent supporters, why should we think he can effect change on the Washington establishment?

I was pleased and amused by how you described the surge and its results. Pleased as it accurately portrayed its purpose – to create conditions for a government to act, not to force certain actions on that government. Amused as you somehow escaped all the vitriolic comments I received when I made such a point several months back.
Regarding all the hoopla over “experience.” Kinda funny, isn’t it? The campaign tactic Hillary used to no avail in the primary is now the tactic embraced by Democrats against Palin. It really degenerates into a “mine’s bigger” argument – citing essential inconsequential items to bolster a position – the state’s an insignificant backwater (shades of the Republican’s Arkansas-Clinton theme when Pres Clinton first ran) or “his days as Senator are more valid than hers as governor.”
Frankly, the very argument that the “best” presidential candidate is the one who has the most time as a Federal elected official (or possibly as a governor of an “important” state) is one I do not accept. That traps us into excluding anyone not in those categories. And I’m rather of the opinion some not in those categories might be a nice “change.”

I think some members of the media are too quick to go with stories without checking them out. This casts all the media in a bad light, especially the ones who do try to get stories right. Anything you read should be taken with a hefty dose of skepticism, now more than ever. The internet is like anything else, it can be used for good or it can be used for bad. I usually don’t even read a political email no matter which side it comes from. Most that are attributed to “well-known people” are so blatantly bogus as to be laughable. I think things would be well served if more people would do like Thomas Sowell, George Carlin and others who have moved quickly to state publicly that they didn’t write things that were attributed to them. In the case of Sowell and Carlin it was obvious at a glance that neither one of them had written what was attributed to them. What would be even better would be if some of these people who write these things could be tracked down and exposed.

In a CNN interview aired moments ago, John McCain just explained how he picked a woman veep. He was at a low point in his campaign and didn’t know if he’d make it through to November when one of his staff workers showed up wearing a cross (your heart bra), and the Eureka moment happened: Pick a woman.
Of course the same thing happened to Solzhenitsyn during a book tour but that was in Vegas, and what comes off in Vegas……

Funny how everybody tries to smear Daily Kos, which is no that bad of a website, and is certainly one of the best sources of election information from a progressive standpoint- unlike the pro GOP bias carried by all the main stream media.
If you really want to see what the nasty right is saying, head over to FreeRepublic.com, the longtime far right place for informed opinions. Just make sure you have a shower handy. You will feel very dirty after visiting there.
The right has been nasty and crude for many years- even the right’s pundits on main stream media like Rush Limbaugh. They laugh and carried on for years with insults and smears against the Clintons and other Dems. There was no uproar over their behavior. Now that liberals have won the internet war, and have many influential websites, the right whines like little children if anything they do not like is discussed. They will search the websites for any random comment, and try to paint the entire left with it. The right is still intellectually dishonest, generally dishonest, and now acts like little crybabies. Did I read someone claim that Rush would take the high road on something. What a joke. THE Rush that will poke fun at a person’s debilitating disease if it gets him some attention. If her daddy wasn’t a drunk, her grandpa a gun-totin’ sociopath, her aunt married to a moron that was stupid enough to taser an eleven-year-old and her self-absorbed mother had spent some time with her instead of wite soopremacissy secesh, maybe she wouldn’t have hooked up with an 18-year old dimbulb who doesn’t want kids and is actually proud of being a redneck.
Given this family, her chances were slim to none anyway.

Actually Corporal - since they are self-described anarchists they can’t really be liberals or anything for that matter because they don’t believe in order. I know it makes you feel better though when you think you have a dig on liberals so don’t let me rain on your ignorance parade.

The reports said that about 130 radicals broke off from the right wing of the 10,000 peaceful demonstrators. Some were wearing T-shirts for Obama and some were wearing T-shirts for Ron Paul. However, there were also reports of looting of clothing stores after windows were broken out. I suspect there were many T-shirts stolen and most likely used to divert attention. Republicans are well versed in such tactics.
Aside from that, we all know that the Republican answer to a problem is to confront it with violence. These violent protestors were obviously Republicans simply living the Bush example. They may have even been upset that the Republican leaders decided that they could not carry their weapons into the Republican convention. Those Republicans — such hypocrites.

Corporal: K_Chub is right. Anarchists are more like “liberatarians on speed” than liberals. What’s odd about the group is that their message was an anti-war message — we’re anti-war, so let’s riot in the streets and fight with cops? — so they are using that as a cover to just trash stuff. Someone just needs to take away the credit card they got from their parents.
And why at the RNCC? Same reason the crazies showed up at the DNCC in Denver: it’s the biggest available stage for them. They don’t care about the politics, just the stage. If it was possible to do it and not get killed, they would have tried to disrupt the China Olympics. Too bad they didn’t try.
Of course, my offering this reasoned explanation is likely just going to make the fascists here think I’m one of those “libs.” Heh heh.

Bush and they are rioting because the American Media is hiding information about an Obama conspiracy. Now the media is covering up the reason they were rioting because they don’t want Americans to find out what they were really protesting about. I heard they are also angry because the AJC censored some of their blog posts.

The business part of the trip went well, then I had to divert as my son went back into the hospital. He’s been battling ulcerative colitis for a year – it’s an inflammation of the large intestine – his was covered end to end with ulcers. Don’t know what causes it, only how to treat. Mostly affects young men ages 16-30. It was his second week back to the hospital in a month. Only a couple of drugs for it, neither worked. One is a steroid, so he suffered through the bloating and the splotchy skin. So this second trip he reviewed the options and made the call to have his large intestine removed.
I asked him about other drugs, alternate treatment, a (in his case) fourth opinion. His answer was “Dad, I just want the pain to stop.” Post op was tough. After 12 hours of the pain not going down and lots of itching they figured out he was allergic to morphine. Put him on Demerol and he was asleep in two hours. After a few days he appeared better so I returned home. Then his condition worsened as his small intestine shut down and bile and such was backing up. They put a tube down his nose to his stomach to pump it out. Very uncomfortable, not much sleep. And the other solution to wake up the organs – cut the pain meds. But after a couple days he seems to be back on the road to recovery.
So no, I haven’t had much else on my mind. An experience like this tends to put things in perspective – what’s really important in life. Oh – his wife is three months pregnant. High risk – in vitro. But you know, his attitude is amazing. Such a marvelous acceptance that good will come. Religion gets tossed around on this blog a lot, but his life (he’s the traditional religious one in the family) is a real example of going through tough times with no bitterness and knowing things work out for good. Very upbeat and accepting.
Gotta cut this off. I’ve told you before about a friend who has dual doctorates, dept chair at one of the Univ of Calif sites, retired and became a minister – Religious Science. I like his take on things. One of his favorite lines is “the Bible says ‘it came to pass.’ Nothing comes to stay – conditions aren’t permanent. They come and they pass.” Just like his condition.

Your son sounds like an amazing man. It’s refreshing to see people who walk the walk and not just talk the talk. Only that there were more such people. We all get caught up in our own little problems. If you look around it’s always easy to find someone with problems worse than your own.
On the subject of anarchist, I don’t see them as liberal or conservative. They should stop and think about the old saying “Be careful what you wish for, for you just might get it”. You have to wonder if they have thought things through though. Total chaos wouldn’t really be a good thing for any of us regardless of our politics.
I have a good friend who is 180 degrees from me on virtually everything when it comes to politics. We argue and have a grand old time without ever referring to each other as idiots, morons, etc.
While it is tough for young people to make a marriage work with the pressure of a child, it can be done. A friend of mine got married under the same circumstances. He was 19 and she was 16. They are still together after 36 years.

Palin views the church as the source of an important, if sometimes politically explosive, message. “Having grown up here, and having little kids grow up here also, this is such a special, special place,” she told the congregation in June. “What comes from this church I think has great destiny.”
And if the political storm over Barack Obama’s former pastor Jeremiah Wright is any indication, Palin may face some political fallout over the more controversial teachings of Wasilla Assembly of God.
If the church had a political alignment, it would almost surely be conservative. In his sermons, Kalnins did not hide his affections for certain national politicians.
During the 2004 election season, he praised President Bush’s performance during a debate with Sen. John Kerry, then offered a not-so-subtle message about his personal candidate preferences. “I’m not going tell you who to vote for, but if you vote for this particular person, I question your salvation. I’m sorry.” Kalnins added: “If every Christian will vote righteously, it would be a landslide every time.”
Months after hinting at possible damnation for Kerry supporters, Kalnins bristled at the treatment President Bush was receiving over the federal government’s handling of Hurricane Katrina. “I hate criticisms towards the President,” he said, “because it’s like criticisms towards the pastor — it’s almost like, it’s not going to get you anywhere, you know, except for hell. That’s what it’ll get you.”
Much of his support for the current administration has come in the realm of foreign affairs. Kalnins has preached that the 9/11 attacks and the invasion of Iraq were part of a “world war” over the Christian faith, one in which Jesus Christ had called upon believers to be willing to sacrifice their lives.
Looks like this crazy pastor G-dam-ned 49% of American voters to Hell…

Man, I’m sorry to hear that, but I hope he’s doing better. My thoughts be with you. My favorite saying from the Bible, is “Amen” - so be it. There’s not much we can do about things, but it’s our attitudes that make it what it is.
Good luck - I know it hurts worse for a parent to see a kid hurt like that.
I was just sitting here worried whether or not my daughter made the school play - she’s been an absolute nervous wreck all weekend - and my middle son hasn’t helped much - of course, he’s told her a million times that she didn’t make it, resulting in crying- slamming doors, me yelling at him, him laughing at me for yelling at him, the other Bosch yelling at me to try and “DO SOMETHING” with that child (middle son) etc. — gee, that doesn’t seem such a big deal right now.
You’re gonna be a grandpa? WOW!!! Congrats on that. You may already be a grandpa for all I know, but congrats anyway - even if it is a repeat.

While I am complaining about the odious instincts of my profession, let me mention in passing the bid that Campbell Brown is making to supplant Lou Dobbs as the most objectionable broadcast bloviator, thereby securing the top two slots for CNN’s “best political team on television”. On Sunday I watched amazed as her supposed interview of a McCain spokesman on the Palin pick degenerated into a laughing, contemptuous harangue. Her evident disgust at the choice was not to be appeased. Then on Monday she demanded of another McCain surrogate to know whether Palin could be a good mother since she had knowingly thrust her daughter into the spotlight. But who, for heaven’s sake, is directing that spotlight? This is like the mugger who tells his victim he regrets what’s happening, “but why were you so stupid as to walk up this dark alley?” Others might be entitled to make that point, but it is nauseating to hear it from the regretful self-righteous mugger herself.

I’m no prophet, but I spoke of this weeks ago. What you ask, the wanton need for some people to do things for appearances sake. My concern now is when are the racy photos of a younger Sarah Palin going to appear, you know they’re out there. Lost in all of this is the GOP’s snubbing of Mitt Romney because he’s a Mormon, and the beloved Bobby Jindal for obvious reasons. McCain’ll still probably reach the Oval office, but what a monumental mistake its going to be.

I have an old friend who’s been living in Anchorage for the past 12 years, and she sent me a e-mail this weekend with her thoughts about her governor, Mrs. Palin. She says that she’s very embarassed by the national attention now being given to the state of Alaska, and that the town of Wasilla is known as the “meth capital” of Alaska, and maybe even of the entire west coast. My friend prays to God that the Repugs don’t pull off this hoax on the American voters in November…
