McCain throws Hail Mary in first quarter
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
It sure has been interesting watching the reaction to John McCain’s selection of Sarah Palin as his running mate. On the right, it has been greeted enthusiastically and even ecstatically. On the left, it has been greeted warmly as well, as evidence of desperation and poor judgment by McCain.
For the moment, the pick has at least succeeded in patching a McCain weakness by generating excitement among the base of his party. The Republican core likes — no, they love — Palin, and they are absolutely convinced that their own excitement will be echoed by excitement among independent and female voters.
I just don’t see it.
The biggest reason is the experience issue. With a younger presidential candidate, it wouldn’t matter as much, but McCain is 72. And while the GOP would like to counter that Palin is as experienced as Obama, I don’t think the general electorate is going to buy that.
Whatever you think about Obama, he has earned his prominence and the top spot on the national ticket by beating both the Clintons in a hard-fought primary battle. Palin, on the other hand, has been plucked from total obscurity with nothing to suggest she is conversant with national issues.
I also think it is easy to underestimate the importance of experience in the national media spotlight. The glare is unforgiving; it is not the place for on-the-job training, and as governor of Alaska you just don’t get exposure to it.
Then there’s the matter of Palin’s role in getting her former brother-in-law fired as a state trooper. I don’t know how that story will play out, but the fact that it still does have to play out — coming to light only in July, with an investigation still underway and depositions yet to be taken — suggests how half-baked the choice really was. A presidential candidate who was confident of his chances would not have put it all at risk with such a pick.
In her first national appearance, Palin placed herself in a line of succession that included Geraldine Ferraro. I think the comparison is accurate. Ferraro, a N.Y. congressman, was picked as a running mate by Walter Mondale in 1984 to try to generate excitement and draw attention to his flagging candidacy. It did, for a while. But when November came, Mondale lost by 18 percentage points.
I don’t expect a blowout like that by Obama. But I do think that as a executive-level decision, the choice of Palin reflects poorly on McCain. She has a great story and seems personable, and her positions on the issues excite the hard right. None of that makes her remotely qualified to be one step from the presidency.

Jay - You are right on the money. The question is:”IS SHE READY TO SUCCEED MCCAIN?”.
And as for those hoping that she will win over ‘disgruntled’ Hillary supporters, continue dreaming. Hillary did not put 18 million bullets in the glass ceiling for a pro-gun, anti-choice, rightwing woman from the frozen tundra of Alaska to slip right through!
“No way, no how, no McCain!” To me, Mitt Romney, would have been a much more formidable choice.

Good job on the DNC goon duty detail this morning, is that a straight cut and paste from the DUmmies talking points memo or did you add syntax to keep a google search from turning up the same article in a thousand other pinko publications?
Fake Temple Pilot survived Bruno by the skin of his teeth, no, wait a minute, she beat him but y’all had to contort your primary process into rules that assured he could gather enough half a voters to keep everybody quite on the delegate count at the convention that was never, uh, counted.
The more that people found out about Chief Teleprompting King, the less they voted for him, and this was even after the most massive propaganda effort in the history of the world, the whole entire toady press was in the tank totally for Obama and against Clinton, he still finished the primaries on a losing note.
And we got two solid months to make sure the American people get to know the real Moron, and trust me, it’s going to seem like an Katrina like onslaught to you naive liberals.
Whatcha got on our girl, she baked cookies in Junior High?
McCain has signed, sealed and delivered this, more on his campaign hitting on all cylinders later, this IS the reform ticket.
With an actual history of reform.
Not just Bluster and Gasbagedness, like uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, your guy.
So go visit the disgruntled, put upon Republican thugs that Sarah’Cuda (RW™) left in her wake, see what animosities they harbor, embrace their dirt and make it your own.

It’s stories like these that I have a hard time keeping my cool and not using language that would get me booted from here:
A Pakistani lawmaker defended a decision by southwestern tribesmen to bury five women alive because they wanted to choose their own husbands, telling stunned members of Parliament last week to spare him their outrage.
“These are centuries-old traditions, and I will continue to defend them,” Israr Ullah Zehri, who represents Baluchistan province, said Saturday. “Only those who indulge in immoral acts should be afraid.”-Urinal/Jihad

Wow! I never know what to expect from Bookman! I mean on any given day he could be saying Republicans are wrong OR saying Democrats are right! You know, both kinds of partisan liberal hack posts.
What next? Hannity telling me he thinks Biden is a poor choice? Wow!
Nothing is more predictable than a partisan hack pundit such as Bookman.
Could the AJC find just one pundit who isn’t a boring partisan hack who regurgitates party talking points? Better yet, fire Bookman et al, hire more real reporters, and let us get our partisan hatred from any of the multiple outlets that offer this undifferentiated tripe.

Jay, looks like you did all of your research on Plain from MSNBC. Note that your thoughtful analysis ignores her accomplsihments as in goverment reform and ethics, something that you claim to care about.
Like Michael Moore, you choose to highlight the facts you want and ignore the others in your endless quest for Democratic gain. Like Moore, you care little of the consumers of your “reality” are better informed or not. All you care about is twisting their views.
Just like the rest of Obama’s brownshirts in the media, all you care about is Democrat victory. If you had any honesty, you would present the full picture of her background instead of presenting just the facts that suit you. You are an intellectual coward.

You two girls just don’t get it, Miss Mgmt. The Palin pick is a gimmick. It’s so painfully obvious that Granny McCain is desperate. His pick was clearly designed to generate news, which it did, and to appeal to Hillary supporters, which it won’t. There is no chance in hell that Granny really thinks this woman is the most qualified person available to be second in line for the Whitehouse. While it’s true that much of the electorate is stupid, as evidenced by the two term Bush, but seven plus disaterous years have taught many a lesson that they’re unlikely to forget by November. Some never learned the lesson, as evidenced by the likes of you and Pauncho, but luckily for the sake of the country, you’re just a blip on the radar. Your rants and raves say so much more about you than they do about anything or anybody you write about. Aren’t you lucky this platform allows you to remain anonymous. Excuse me for following your juvenile tack of name calling, but “Granny” just seems so appropriate.

Wooten, on the other hand, tears it up:
When women of the left speak of “women’s issues,” they speak always of women as though they are of one mind, and it is theirs. When they complain that not enough women are in high places, it’s not conservative women they seek to promote. In fact, I can never remember in the Georgia General Assembly or elsewhere women of the left objecting to the perceived mistreatment or glass ceiling that affects women of the right. More commonly, they are vilified in the same way that most blacks of the left vilify Justice Clarence Thomas.-AJC
No regurgitated talking points, just heavy hitting commentary on a real issue.
Dhimmocrats have embraced women’s and minority rights issues and have made them their own, as long as the woman and minority toe the liberal line.
So where do the real priorities of the pinkos lie, advancing women’s and minority rights, or advancing their liberal agenda?

Jay,
I’m glad to see you highlighting concerns about Palin that her base of drooling lovers choose to ignore. I also have the same concern (amongst others) as you with the bigger picture issue of her suddenly taking over as CIC. What would she do in an emergency, call up Rumsfeld, Cheney, and Bush as her advisers. Worse yet, does she already think as they do. No thanks. I don’t want four more years of that fiasco. And, what if McCain’s age does not catch up with him. Then, it’s still four more years of the same. Again, no thanks. That said, if Palin wants to try and win over more voters, perhaps she could start by outing even more of those corrupt Republicans — someone did brag about this particular trait of hers, didn’t they. Let’s see what she’s made of.

My big “brudder”, a charming Reagan Republican, pulled into the driveway after twelve hours in the car and said, “that knuckle head McCain, what the ##@$@# was he thinking when he picked Palin”
I said hi.
Gosh, I love vacation.!
Re: Sarah Palin
I see she supports teaching creationism in public schools. How old does she think the planet is? A science forum is called for. How about here.
She’s got problems with troopergate.
The campaign forgets about the intertubes and she’s made some statements about Ted Stevens and the bridge to nowhere that are going to cause some red faces.
She opposes the right to chose, even in cases of rape or incest.
Creepiest quote I’ve seen so far:
EEEK!
I just stopped for a while to read the posts above.
By tone and content, if these are the kinda’ folks you get with a McCain/Palin administration I am not at all interested. More and more I am finding my self turned off, not just by McCain, but by his supporters.

Anyway…gotta go.

Bookman, Sarah Putin could only have happened if the real polls showed an insurmountable Obama lead. This is desperation born from the grim realization of the inevitable loss.
Sarah Putin? Can you say Edsel? Hindenberg? Twiggy's career? The problem is that we are in such a fix as a country that we're aren't ready for a new face, pretty as it is.We’re defensive, frightened, and leery. We may pledge allegience to change as a concept, but we dont want changing faces. Now now, not while we perceive a crisis and turning point in our socio-economic and military fortunes.
The choice of Sarah Putin, however, will advance the cause of justice for minorities, after all, John Lennon said it best: “Woman is the N-word of the world” (he’ll say it again).
McCain’s campaign is about to get turbo flushed. New faces are too upsetting. America isn’t interested in a new face here. Sleeping on Sarah P. is unsettling at best. The phone doesn’t have to ring at four AM. We’re already awake. Sarah P. is the Beeyayatch we hated at all those PTA meetings we were forced to attend when our daughters were in middle school. No thanx. Her ilk is coarse, crude, rude, overbearing, opinionated, prejudicial and entirely dreadful.
McCangelina 08: So all America needed was a pretty face? But our children are still uneducated…..and we cant afford to RX them.
Rush Limbaugh is very excited about Sarah Palin, because he’s practiced at mimicking disease symptoms, like he done against Micheal J. Fox not long ago. After eight years of profound arrogance and bad decision making, America is sorely in need of competent leadership from the Whitehouse. Until now I have always respected McCain’s decision making and have admired his courage to take a position that he believed was in the best interest of America, despite the political consequences. Selecting a self-described Hockey Mom as a running mate, especially for a 72 year old candidate, however is not an indication of the competent leadership which America needs. This decision does more to link McCain to Bush than anything the Dems could ever claim.

Yes, yes, let’s all focus on the experience of a VP just before we vote on the experience of a President. It’s called an end around. Polls will show if it scored.
Obama is the one that actually used Abraham Linclon as his example of inexperienced accomplishments. Except, errr, isn’t Sarah Palin a much better representation of what Linclon really stood for, reform and, oh yeah Republicanism!?
But no matter, the parrots of the DNC are out in force this morning. Progressive anchors and editors accross the country are attacking on all fronts. McCain bows under pressure for the Religious right and will pay for it big time. Palin is now taking a four week course in foreign relations, so that she can be prepared to meet with Putin if she has to. We thought that Palin was very lucky to be asked after the first date, but it seems that McCain has a history of making fast, instinctive and sometimes risky decisions. “I make them as quickly as I can, quicker than the other fellow, if I can,” McCain wrote, with his top adviser Mark Salter, in his 2002 book, “Worth the Fighting For.” “Often my haste is a mistake, but I live with the consequences without complaint.” YIKES……….

A convention primer, for those of you with so little faith:
Bush 2001-2008.
Iraq- Transformed from a mass murdering dictatorship with weapons of mass destruction, a regional menace that had threatened and invaded it’s neighbors, to a freely elected democracy that has brought economic prosperity to the formerly enslaved and a soon to be world power who’s 500,000 man Security Force is a major counter balance to Islamic extremists in Iran.
30 million people that used to fear the people of the United States, because of their own government’s propaganda and the left wing toady media of the left, who now know that we are not only the “strong horse” but the most generous and caring people in the world.
And they now spread that word to the entire Middle East.
Peace in the Middle East, a goal set by all previous U.S. administrations, practically achieved by George W Bush.
This alone will secure his legacy as one of the greatest presidents of all time.
Can you say “give them hell Harry?”
Economic Prosperity- One of the longest periods of economic growth in history, since coming off of the Klinto recession, no quarters of negative growth have been registered. An unemployment rate just as low as any that the pinko media called “full employment” during their goon propaganda years of the Klinton administration. All of this despite the attacks of 9/11, the boondoggle spending of Katrina and Rita and the dhimmocrat asininity of not allowing domestic energy production which has led to an increase in all prices across the board, food, energy, you name it.
No terrorist attacks on the homeland in 7 years- Who would have bet on that in 2001?
Strengthening our presence in the world- Since 2001, when most of the Euroweenie nations were governed by oil for food corrupted left wing surrender monkeys, we have seen the world turn to Conservatism and bolster their alliance with the United States. There is no denying this fact. The United Nations, albeit there is much more work to be done here, is no longer an unabashed harpie for the thugs and dictators of the world. NATO has taken over coalition operations in Afghanistan. We are joining together as we speak in economic and diplomatic unions that will confront and defeat the regional menace that is Russia.
My arm hurts.

In her first national appearance, Palin placed herself in a line of succession that included Geraldine Ferraro. I think the comparison is accurate.
And I think that’s about the only comparison that should be made. Palin stands up to corruption and mindless pork. Besides, Palin never made an asinine comment like Barack wouldn’t be where he was if he were white.
Gallup: 14%
NBC/Wall Street Journal: 15%
FOX/Opinion Dynamics: 19%
CNN/Opinion Research Corp: 22%
An average of 17.5% between the four. This is how much Americans approve of the Democrats running congress. Two years ago, just one year after Katrina and that massive gas price spike, Nancy Pelosi said she will bring leadership and lower gas prices if sent to Washington. What say you, Nanny?
If memory serves me correctly as well, she and her future leadership Democrats made comments about Bush not getting Osama. In fact, that topic was brought up by The Appointed One himself: “George Bush will not follow Osama to the cave in which he lives.” Well go get him, tiger. You people on the left have only a majority of our Senate Intelligence Committee since January of 2007 or so. What are you waiting for?
If you want more of this incompetence and broken promises and empty rhetoric, then by all means put Democrats 100% in charge of Washington.

Palin is a desperation choice that McCain made because of hardcore right-wing pressure.
America will see this for exactly what it is McCain bowing to right-wing pressure again - so much for those intelligent, middle-America swing votes you cold warriors wanted
this is the same right wing whose ‘leadership’ has what has landed us in a 12 billion per month war and in the process destroyed our economy.

Ray - I mistook (misread) your name for Ron. My apologies. Also I’m having a hard time with reading tongue-n-cheek this weekend for some reason…
The scurrilous claim that McCain vice presidential pick Governor Sarah Palin faked her pregnancy with a Down’s Syndrome child is beginning to spread among the lowest of the nutrooters. Now, the unhinged, smear site DemocraticUnderground.com has boosted this lie to their front pages.

Why is the left so concerned about what “other countries think of us”? You could count on two hands the number of countries that really matter about their opinion and the others you can write off. Most of the others care about our weaknesses so that they can exploit them, our foreign aid dollars and how much they can get and their balance of trade with our economy. Aside from that, they have little to no concern about us except coming across our borders illegally to share the American dream. Why is it that all of these others that we should care so much about don’t have crowds of people wanting to immigrate across their borders? In Mexico, they would jail you for a very long time if caught.
Bush has been blamed for a lot of things, among them “tarnishing our image”. Our image is intact, alive and well thanks to him and will remain so under McCain.

Anybody that wants to make the ridiculous argument that we can’t afford to have the extremely well qualified Governor Palin one step away from the Presidency should take a look at the fact that we have have Nancy Pelosi two steps away right now. talk about scary.
Governor Sarah’cuda is more qualified that Obambi at every step of the way and she’s in the second spot. Jay seems to have no problem putting a thoroughly unqualified community organizer, that seems to get bored with whatever job he has about 10 minutes into it, in the Oval Office. Welllllllllllllll Jay, I found it “interesting” that the powerhouses within the Democratic Party stood obediently on the line while OBlahMa called a “Hell Hillary.”
Does this call sound familiar?
“She’s confident and she’s driven,” Kelly said. “Her leadership style is kind of a mix. While she’s strong in her convictions; she’s very willing to listen to her advisors.”
Now while OBlahMa has not proven to be strong in his convictions (flippin’ and a floppin), he did say he would be listening to his advisors.
Palin IS strong in her convictions. They’re out there for everyone to see. She listens to her advisors. She’s already got him beat by one point.
People still don’t know whether OBlahMa HAS convictions or whether they’re just being played.
OBlahMa’s “game” has played itself out.
Go sit on the bench Senator OBlahMa.

Racists?
~~~~~
The selection of Sarah Palin as John McCain’s running mate has electrified conservative activists, providing a boost of energy to the GOP nominee-in-waiting from a key constituency that previously had been lukewarm — at best — about him.
By tapping the anti-abortion and pro-gun Alaska governor just ahead of his convention, which is set to start here Monday, McCain hasn’t just won approval from a skeptical Republican base — he’s ignited a wave of elation and emotion that has led some grass-roots activists to weep with joy.
“I woke up and my e-mail was just going crazy,” said Charmaine Yoest, head of the legislative arm of Americans United for Life and a former top official in Mike Huckabee’s presidential campaign. “And then when it was announced — it was like you couldn’t breathe.”
First, though, they’re expressing their newfound fondness for McCain with their checkbooks. Since tapping Palin, the campaign has raised nearly $7 million online, according to McCain aides.
“There is an electricity going through the social conservative crowd right now; it’s unbelievable,” said James Muffett, head of Michigan’s Citizens for Traditional Values, who had met with McCain in the weeks leading up to his selection of a running mate. “Especially given all the set-ups and head fakes — it’s amazing. A lot of people were sure he was going to show his more moderate colors.”
Muffett said the effect on his conservative comrades in arms has been immediate and visceral.
“[The] choice is to shore up the conservative, pro-drilling base,” he said. “This is an aggressive, on-offense pick, not a defensive pick.”
And then there is the contrast: “While [Barack Obama] wants to ban AR-15s, Palin shoots AR-15s, and apparently pretty well.”
Her image as a pistol-packin’ mama could prove especially key in the hunter-filled Rust Belt, said Paul Erhardt, a longtime political strategist who specializes on gun issues.
“Palin could play strong in the sporting states like Michigan, Ohio and Pennsylvania, depending on how they use her,” he said. “Most pundits will underestimate her appeal in these key areas because they don’t know her and they are unfamiliar with the sporting scene. But among sportsmen, authenticity counts and Palin’s got that and then some.”
Her very presence on the ticket underscores something Obama doesn’t want us to notice: He spent two years stopping a woman from becoming president and now he is about to spend two months stopping one from becoming vice president. Obama could have made history but failed the test. McCain passed with flying colors. That point will not be lost on independent women.
And-
She knew she was bearing a Down syndrome child but refused to have an abortion. My head bows to the integrity, guts and courage it takes to embark knowingly on such a life challenge because of one’s personal belief in the sanctity of life. When we look at McCain’s loving adoption of a child from a Bangladeshi orphanage run by Mother Teresa and Palin’s knowing birth of a handicapped baby, we see a quality of character on this ticket worthy of the White House.
Until Barack Obama plucked him out of tiny Delaware, Joe Biden’s principal renown was for talking too much and saying too little. And yet the media has credulously treated Biden as a serious figure, a courtesy they did not extend him during either of his presidential runs. One can only imagine how inquisitive reporters would handle a Republican nominee for vice-president who graduated 86th in his law school class of 95 as Biden did.
As for Biden’s unfortunate history with plagiarism, the less said the better. At least that seems to be the media’s view now that he’s on the ticket. Somehow I doubt that 36 years in the senate would wash away such stains for a Republican.
But there is good news for Sarah Palin as the latter-day Howell Raineses and Clark Cliffords line up to smear her: She controls how the American people will come to view her much more than they do. There’s a reason her excellent speech on Friday set off such a firestorm of rage and irrational hissy-fits on the left. Speaking directly to the American people, Palin cut an attractive and intelligent figure. Regardless of the left’s anger, the American people will believe their own eyes rather than a frustrated blogger’s or haughty anchorman’s blustery “analysis.”
When Clark Clifford toured the D.C. cocktail party circuit with his “amiable dunce” assessment of Ronald Reagan, most of the assembled sippers agreed. History proved them wrong. But that’s not what really has the left rattled as they set off in pursuit of Sarah Palin. The American people knew Ronald Reagan was no dunce long before the Clark Cliffords of Washington admitted as much.
