No looking back, no going back….
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
I know this will shock some of you, but I thought Obama’s speech was excellent. I think the most compelling part of it was the way, in case after case, he took on the worst that his opponents have said about him and refuted it, head on and point blank.
Let the nitpicking begin, as it will, but nitpicking and those who pick them won’t be enough. As the man said, this cannot be a campaign about little things, not at this time in this nation’s history, not with this much at stake. We can’t afford that kind of campaign, and Obama made it pretty clear he will fight to make sure it doesn’t become that.
So. Your turn at bat, Sen. McCain…..

What a shocka…….
Uh oh, one of the “boys on Fox” as Jay calls them, Juan Williams, wasn’t quite so enamored with The Speech.
As for me I thought it was an excellent speech and were I interviewing for a spokesman for my company I would be impressed. Were I interviewing for a CEO of my company I would be firing middle managers for letting this guy get this far through the process.

A good speech. But it was the same old liberal speech, the very one we have been hearing for the last 20 years. Seemed more like an Obama attempt to move back to traditional democratic themes. A last ditch effort to get independents focusings on blue collar economics rather than their fears about his inexperience and unpreparedness.
It was a lost opprotunity..

RW wouldn’t have voted for Abe Lincoln either. “Not enough experience,” he would declare. “A good spokesperson, but not someone to be the CEO!” What, with only 8 years in the Illinois House and 2 years in the US House, that wouldn’t have been enough for him during those troubled times.
Heh. Some people can’t see beyond their own prejudices. And I don’t mean racial.
That said, I think the fact that Bill Kristol was impressed and thought Obama exceeded expectations says a lot for the speech Obama gave in the setting he orchestrated. Kristol spent the past three days not being impressed by anything that went on at the DNCC.
Everyone brings their own preconceptions to their analysis, so really I don’t take Kristol that seriously. And I certainly can’t do anything but laugh at the trolls on this site who whistle past their favorite party’s graveyard.
My take on it is that it kept me awake when I should have been asleep and made me hope that he can accomplish at least half of what he promises, because it’ll be a better situation for our country if he can.

From today’s paper: Meanwhile, worried Republicans were monitoring the progress of Tropical Storm Gustav, which is forecast to strengthen into a hurricane and hit land early next week, as the Republicans meet for their nominating convention in St. Paul.
Wow. That’s gotta suck. If it does hit in the area expected on Tuesday with the expected strength, file it under “God Hates Republicans”, since the only images plastered on every TV screen the rest of the week will be the Republican convention and the hurricane damage.

I have never fallen asleep so fast as when Oblahma began his mundane oratory. The dope smokers and rope smokers of Denver would have cheered as loud for a propped up mannequin with sound piped in.
Maybe his buddy Bill Ayers, the murderer and bomber and terrorist, was in attendance.

BHT @ 7.41, seriously, you think that playing the “he’s perhaps too much like that really, really popular former President who served during a period of peace and prosperity and left office with two thirds of the nation approving of his Administration” card, is a really strong one to play?
Is there a single swing voter out there who thinks Ken Starr’s investigation was a smart use of public funds? Who thinks the lame-duck 1998 Congress’ impeachment was actually justified? Who would have, if they’d been a Senator, voted to convict over lying about a BJ?
After what nearly 8 years of Bush/Cheney’s grubby, bloody paws have wrought?
Good luck with that. I’m off to put food on my family. And to look forward to a future with saner hands at the helm.

I agree with what someone said in Jay’s prior column. Turning the convention coverage to CSPAN or PBS and away from the talking-head channels makes watching much more bearable.
The talking-head channels didn’t show many of last night’s speakers in order to make sure they could get their analysis (sic) and opinions heard. Well,ok, let’s just say it: They just wanted to get their mouths and hairdos on the TV.

The theme of the up coming election should be NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN. For years Rush, Sean, and all the fun lovers at Fox News have been waging holy war on liberalism. Their problem is that they have no real experience fighting wars therefore they aren’t very good at it. After eight years of Bush, America has nearly twice as many Liberals as it did when he was elected. Young people in particular have been moving to the left in huge numbers. Mean while mainstays of the Republican party such as fundamentalist Christains are becoming more disenchanted with politics. This is only natural as mixing religion and politics is like mixing ice cream and manure. It does’nt hurt the manure much but it’s hell on the ice cream. Elections are won by the parties that succesfully fire up their bases, and so far that advantage appears to lie with Obama.

From Andrew Sullivan
What he didn’t do was give an airy, abstract, dreamy confection of rhetoric. The McCain campaign set Obama up as a celebrity airhead, a Paris Hilton of wealth and elitism. And he let them portray him that way, and let them over-reach, and let them punch him again and again … and then he turned around and destroyed them. If the Rove Republicans thought they were playing with a patsy, they just got a reality check.

This election isn’t about theories and scientists with opposing views or promises or speculation or even visions. It’s about reality and that reality is that the Bush administration and the Republican Party have led us over the edge of the cliff and we are falling, knowing that the only thing left now is to hit bottom and hit it hard. That is the reality. Now, we have to wait to see what’s left after we hit, pick up the pieces and start re-building. This time around though, we have to pay as we go. The credit cards are maxed out and there’s no more easy money to be had. It’s time to pay the piper and the best place to start is with those that put us in this mess. Vote NO to more of the same. Vote against the Incumbent Republicans.

Wow, Obama was certainly impressive last night.
What about that crowd. Great stuff.
So McCain is announcing his VP candidate in a basketball stadium at - and I kid you not - this is the name of the basketball stadium:
NUTTER CENTER - GO GOP NUTS!!!
You just can’t make that up!
I thought about some naysayers here last night when he said “So let me spell out exactly what that change would mean if I am president” and then proceeded to do so, step by step - I hope they could keep up.
And when he talked about national security and said “You don’t defeat a terrorist network that operates in 80 countries by occupying Iraq” - I really liked that.
And when he said, “We are the party of Roosevelt. We are the party of Kennedy. So don’t tell me that Democrats won’t defend this country. Don’t tell me that Democrats won’t keep us safe”
That’s always been a pet peeve of mine - the notion that anyone who is President, in a post 9/11 world wouldn’t be strong on national security.
And spot on when he said regarding John McCain’s charge that he’s not ready to be CIC - “that’s a debate I’m ready to have.”
And that no one introduced him - as of course, he needs no introduction.
Obama made me proud last night. I’m glad my kids were watching that with me.

BHT,
And if I may, another sports analogy:
In professional soccer, there are only three substitutes allowed, and those are mostly done at the end of the game - it’s referred to as “getting a fresh pair of legs.” Soccer games last 90 minutes/45 minute halves, and alot of times, by the end of the game, many of the players can barely run - so you substitute in a fresh pair of legs to motivate the offense.
And many times, it works, and the substitute will be able to create a play, because he isn’t tired, and the team will score.

I believe it was Aug. 29th in ‘05 when the levees broke? — and how appropriate to remember that today. The Repugs should all remember that date and what it meant for their true colors to bleed through.

Let’s hear some more biased reporting. Only a complete fool would have believed the nonsense Obama was spewing last night. We will be off our dependence on foreign oil within 10 years. Only an idiot would think that. He will cut taxes for 95% of Americans. When has a democrat actually cut taxes? It’s a fact that the dems will let the Bush tax cuts expire in 2010 hereby raising all our taxes. The spectacle I saw last night reminded me of a documentary I saw once. The Guyana Tragedy. I saw people so blinded and fooled by someone they wouldn’t care if Obama committed some sort of heinous crime right in front of them. They still would worship him. This man is as mysterious as Austin Powers and is just as make believe. How could we possibly elect someone with ties to terrorists? Someone who’s taken money from convicted criminals such as Tony Rezco. Someone who sat in a raciest church for twenty years. At least John McCain and his profile are laid out for all to see….

Goldie, What I am concerned about is our future. Do I think McCain is Bush, part II? No, I don’t.
Bosch, I can give the new kid a chance. Again, don’t think McCain is Bush, part II.
Bush’s term has been like World Cup 2006. Very disappointing. Let’s hope WC2010 has a better outcome and Obama, since it looks like this is his to lose, lives up to the hype.

The speech as spectacle was as good as it gets. The speech as part of a political campaign was as good as it gets. The narrative of past failures resulting in current and future challenges that must be met was particularly compelling. Anyone who doesn’t see the success of the speech at least on this level is not being very realistic - which, of course, may be part of the problem of their politics.
These considerations are trivial, though, in relation to the content, the policy planks being put forth. Given where the country is today, it’s unrealistic to think that we won’t have to enact many of these policies. We certainly need to get back to Rule of Law domestically. Overseas, it would be nice if we could simply get back to the realpolitik of Nixon, even with all it’s failings, though I’d prefer to move much further in the direction international realism to further our (US) goals.
I’m not convinced that ALL of the policies that Obama talked about are the single best solutions to their subjects. On the other hand, I am utterly convinced that McCain’s policies, assuming his positions didn’t change from the last time I went to the water cooler, will simply pour gasolina on the flames.

McCain : I Totally Agree With Bush On The Transcendent Issues
And of course, McBush is not even mentioning that he voted with Dubya to allow waterboarding of prisoners… how does that make you feel about McBush’s judgement, after what he himself went through at the Hanoi Hilton???

A great ZINGER from Al Gore last night!
Today, we face essentially the same choice we faced in 2000, though it may be even more obvious now - because John McCain, a man who has earned our respect on many levels, is now openly endorsing the policies of the Bush-Cheney White House and promising to actually continue them, the same policies all over again?

Back for a bit.
BHT @ 8.37, ok. Fair enough.
Joe @ 9.50, you’re being awfully presumptuous. Obama’s proposed tax hikes — which have Republicans all aflutter and spreading lies/nonsense in response — are aimed at restoring the very modest 3.6% tax rate hike for incomes above 250K for joint filers (there’s a bit of history here) Clinton pushed through. Those income levels represent about 5% of the current American population, no matter how the GOP tries to frame it as “hurting small business.’ Most small business owners don’t make anything like that kind of scratch for personal income.
Bush’s hyped “tax cuts” amounted to, as near as I can tell, a measley one percent on most of that remaining 95%. Obama, unless you know differently, has not called for repealing that small bit of relief.
But if you want to go on crying “he’ll raise taxes on all of us,” be my guest. I’ve heard it before—in ‘92, when Rush and company were telling me that Clinton would (Rush’s exact words) “ruin the economy.”

There was a politician a while back who gave great awe inspiring speaches about change. He had little experience having never held office or lead anything signficant before but the peole fell for it and didn’t ask change to what exactly. Lo and behold Fidel Castro became leader of Cuban. They got the change they were promised.

I can evaluate the candidates based on their own merits, thank you. I don’t feel a need to pull a lever based on whether their name is followed by an (R) or a (D).
I’m undecided but you are doing a poor sales job for your candidate.

Who is Palin? I can’t help but think Ted Stevens hasn’t done her any favors - let’s hope not.
Okay, so the McCain camp whines about Obama being inexperienced, and then we have - let’s see - who the hell is this woman? OH, she’s been a governor for two years. Wow. Impressive (as I roll my eyes).

tcoach,
No, not really. Is Palin anti-war? What are her positions on, well, say anything?
Like I said earlier, McCain’s whining about Obama’s lack of inexperience completely contradicts his choice for VP. She’s been the Governor of Alaska for two years - and McCain - well, he’s old, and is constantly getting “things” cut off his face.
But I did just read she’s a former beauty queen with a degree in journalism and a former sports reporter - and a former city councilwoman for Wasilla - population less than 1/8th the amount of people who were at Obama’s speech last night.
Sorry, but McCain’s accusations of Obama’s lack of experience just went right out the door.

Are you kidding me? Your assessment that Sarah Palin will bury Joe Biden in a debate is ludicrous!
Obama will do just fine against McCain..
It will resemble the night when Kennedy debated Nixon….
Good looking, smart..VS an old man who has no ideas, has flip flopped on almost every thing he stood for in 2000, and votes with Bush 95% of the time.
Let the debates begin!

Can’t wait for McCain to romp in August. One more news flash, there is a hurricane coming New Orleans (Bush’s fault), what part of get the hell out of town don’t you people get? Lets blame the Republicans for everyone’s lack of personal responsibility. One more news flash, I have a job, 7 houses with fixed rates and am not about to lose any of them, do not want the governments health care or social security, was raised in the hood, don’t drive a car with 17” dubs, save every penny I make, did not breed like a rabbit, and am responsible for my own life as well as my families, just like everyone else SHOULD be. By the way, Lincoln was a Republican, so was every black member elected to every state house for many years after the civil war. Remember George Wallace, Lester Maddox, etc, etc.,all Democrats. Remember when the Iranians took American hostages and Jimmy Carter wanted to negotiate, hold hands, sing Koombayah, and set 4 helicopters on a failed rescue? Remember when Ronald Reagan took office and they were released THE SAME DAY? Go ahead, slobber over a guy who has been in office less than 2 years to lead us and see how quick he is tested. Proof the masses are asses and vote on emotion only.
