Why aren’t the hyenas howling?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Under the urging of U.S. Secretary of State Condi Rice, NATO members have agreed upon a course of action in response to Russia’s invasion of Georgia and its apparent refusal to live up to its agreement to withdraw.
In retaliation, NATO’s going to give Russia the silent treatment. That’s right, they’re going to refuse to talk to Russia again unless it withdraws totally from Georgia.
That’ll teach ‘em.
In reality, there’s not much else to be done. Once Georgia attacked its breakaway enclaves, and once Russia responded with overwhelming force, the options available to NATO and the United States dwindled to almost none. Success would have been in preventing that sequence of events, and we failed. At this point, no military response is feasible or advisable.
But I can’t help but think what the reaction would be in conservative circles if a Democrat was sitting in the White House right now, dealing with the very same circumstances confronting President Bush. Can’t you just hear it?
The howling and complaining would be deafening, with overheated accusations that the president lacked guts, courage and any other manly virtue. Limbaugh and his Dittoheads would be braying like a pack of cartoon hyenas, with congressional Republicans joining right in, demanding that the 82nd Airborne descend on Moscow and bring Putin’s head home on a stick.
It would be sickening.

The only difference between ‘w’ and McSame is that one doesn’t know he’s a loser and the other brags about being one.
The last thing this country needs right now, especially in light of Russia’s giggle at our pitiful attempt at ruffling any feathers we might have left – the very last thing we need right now is to line up behind someone who boasts about having once been shot down and captured. Eight years of losing is enough.
‘w’ turned our bald eagle into a buzzard. McSame will kill it.
‘w’ had Iraq.
McSame wants Russia.
Being that it’s our soldiers and our money, isn’t it time for an American President?

TW @ 9.44, what some Americans seem to want is an ill-tempered, forgetful man who can’t keep Sunni and Shia straight, jokes about slaughtering Iranians, makes horrific gaffes on an almost daily basis, has spent the past three decades cocooned in a kept-man’s world, shuttling between DC in his six—no, maybe more! He forgets how many! houses—and has barely enough stamina to make it to one campaign event per weekday.
Some. But I doubt most do.
For those rejoicing in a modest nationwide polling slip by Obama, I might remind you that Obama has barely begun to attack McCain, instead focusing on his own positives. McCain’s reputation, favorability and trustworthiness has nowhere to go but south. Literally and figuratively.
Seriously, the best shot the GOP has (beyond their current strategy of daily poo-flinging-to-see-what-sticks) is to gin up another military conflict and hope that Americans are once again stupid enough to entrust the GOP with managing its strategic affairs. God help us if they do.

A Legacy of FallaciesA new age dawns. The Chinese have developed low-cost housing for us — a shelter with walls and roof constructed from ETFE bubble wrap.
The banks foreclose on their complicit if not explicit failings. With nothing left but the inflated proceeds from the scrap copper sale, you head off to make a new life for yourself. Later that day, a roll of bubble wrap accompanies you out the automatic doors of the WalMart. From there it turns out to be a short hike to the neighborhood green space — a local park — but just for the night. In the morning, it’s off to the nearest national forest where the all but undisturbed expanses can be foraged for sustenance well away from the prying eyes and ears and outstretched hand of the anointed one, King Bush.
You lick your wounds while savoring the nuts and berries that the black bear had stubbornly clung to for far too long. Was it worth the fight. That’s a question for another day for now it is time to establish a new castle to defend — a mortgage-free castle constructed from bubble wrap. Only time and the elements will ultimately prove its true worth but for now it will suffice as affordable housing.
Night falls and an American dreams with a roof over his head and food in his stomach. If only there had been a willow tree nearby. The bark could have provided much needed affordable relief from the reminders of the earlier fight for survival. In the morning, a search for a sustainable source of water and a site for a latrine, separated from the water source by at least one hundred feet in order to avoid contamination, will help to complete the castle grounds.
When the King’s men come knocking, you offer no reply. The ETFE absorbs the waves from the repeated knocks at the entrance to your castle. You do not hear a thing. The tax collectors ultimately tire of the lack of response and scavenge within your self-proclaimed homestead in the King’s forest for something of value to take back to the King Bush.
The tax collectors eventually reach the conclusion that today’s search has once again provided nothing more than proof of the time-tested reality that once the blood has been taken from the turnip, it does not produce more and repeated attempts at further extractions will repeatedly lead to the same result. There is nothing left to hock. The King has long since acquired all that you had, including your first-born and your first-born’s first-born. For that, his name might be remembered for generations to come.
The King’s legacy is complete. Long live the King.

There’s actually lots of evidence to support Bookman’s assertion that the right applies such a double-standard. North Korea is a perfect example.
In the 90’s Carter/Clinton were labeled appeasers when they agreed to send North Korea heavy fuel oil in exchange for dismantling their nuclear program. We eventually broke our promise (thereby voiding the agreement) because the Republican-led Congress refused to appropriate funds for the fuel oil. When G.W. Bush implements essentially the same agreement, what do the Republicans say? Nothing. Nearly complete silence.
I say “nearly” complete because when John Bolton cries, to our detriment, the media makes sure that we know about it.

Here’s a howler…
Speaking about Georgia, McCain told a town hall in Las Cruces, New Mexico on Wednesday: “They had a corrupt government headed by a guy named Shevardnadze, who you may remember from the days of the Cold War. And they had a peaceful revolution and they took over, and they were putting democracy and freedom and human rights, and they were prospering.”
In November 1999, the same John McCain described Shevardnadze as “one the great men in the history of the world” during a GOP debate at Arizona State University.

Mrs. G, be reasonable. McCain’s a busy man. He does as many as one whole campaign event almost every single weekday!
We can’t expect him to remember whether he called Shvardnadze “corrupt” or a “great man.”
Just like we can’t expect him to remember whether or not the Iranians train their sworn enemy al-qaeda; that’s why he keeps Joe Liberman around, to whisper the right answer in his ear!

It’s always interesting how these columns are constructed. The lead puts the US (SecState) in the spotlight – not NATO. NATO decided upon a course of action. SecState Rice “urged” a course of action? Sure. So did other member states. But it was a NATO show. It also keeps the emphasis on the US and the present administration, not upon Europe and NATO.
The second paragraph seems to belittle NATO’s declaration. No sources given, but a Washington Post article
Link: [NATO Urges Russia To Withdraw but Will Say Little Else]*( http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/08/19/AR2008081900216.html)
Makes the case the US got what it wanted. Other member states got what they wanted, others didn’t.
[[Success would have been in preventing that sequence of events, and we failed. At this point, no military response is feasible or advisable.]]
That’s an interesting view of the ability of the US or the US and its allies to control the actions of a major state pursuing its own security objectives, especially when they are not the same objectives held by the US or its allies. By this standard, is any action by a nation that is not what we want a “failure?” Or only those involving military action? Argentina took the Falklands. They went to war with the UK. Did the US “fail?” Russia invaded Afghanistan. Did the US “fail?”
Or did Russia fail the world by not abiding by the post-Cold War standard of not invading Republics that pursue their own form of government and alliances?
As to the rest of the column, it may be satisfying to perpetuate a caricature of farright Republicans desiring to “take the fight to the Russians in their own back yard.” They may exploit it for the ratings and money game, but as a serious policy option, I hope not.
In a similar vein, we’ve already heard from a possible Vice President what he would do to stop a war in another part of the world – send in the Marines and the Air Force – and force them to make nice. VP Biden, I don’t think Limbaugh and his Dittoheads’ll support you on that one.

Let’s just see what the Georgians have to say about “weak” and “helpless” America:
“The West saved the capital. They were moving to Tbilisi. There was one night that was very dangerous. The Russian tanks were very close to the capital. I don’t know what happened, but they moved the tanks back.” And my translator, whose husband works for Georgia’s ministry of foreign affairs, made a similar guess that the West helped save the capital. “The night they came close to Tbilisi,” she said, “Bush and McCain made their strongest speeches yet. The Russians seemed to back down. Bush and McCain have been very good for us.”

Mrs Godzilla,
Well, as I’ve said in the past, I’m not much interested in the private lives of our leaders. Go back thru history, eliminate all those pick those who were in crucial positions who led the country through some perilous times, who had “morality failings” (FDR, Kennedy. Clinton) and we may have had quite a bad outcome in those situations.
Heck, Mrs. G - look at the flip side. Take those who had zero fidelity problems - Bush, Nixon…. - kinda ironic, isn’t it?
Hello MIdori
Just checking in between packing for the trip - but in a nutshell - I remained opposed to the very idea of a draft. It can remove one obstacle to continued intervention around the world.

Even some Dems are beginning to rethink their Obamaphilia and drift back into political malaise. The concept of leadership experience trumping popularity is gaining traction. As desperation turns to gloom, a light flickers in the distance. Its actually the reflection of freshly frosted hair under the white-hot spots on the stage at the Dem convention accepting the VP nomination. Oh Hillary, save us!

I’m a far fight Republican. No, I don’t want to see our military tangle with Russia in their own backyard. I doubt our military leaders do either. Putin picked his fight very carefully. They have nuclear weapons and are not afraid to use ‘em.

Good cooking to you this weekend.
Hi Bosch
I think Massive Retaliation/Mutual Assured Destruction “worked” only because each side thought the other would retaliate, massively, to a strike. Interestingly, in much of the writings of that time a chem or bio strike was considered on a par with a nuke strike - inviting the same kind of retaliation.
The other aspect is we considered each other to be rational. I do not think the people who could have “the bomb” in Iran or Pakistan necessarily fit in that category.

Congratulations on being a liberal now.
Midori & Mrs. G., should we tell Paul the secret code word? Or give him the lapel pin? We can let him come to our secret “how liberals are evil, hate our country, and plan to ruin the country” meetings, right?
BUT, I did see the volleyball! Meow! Wait a minute, did I just type “meow?” Oh my God, I did, but it is appropriate. Oh, and BTW, I liked the cartoon. :-) Meow!
Those good ol’ American girls rock! ROCK, I say (or write).
Anywho, back in the day (Cold War day, that is) Russia had no reason to consider that we were rational - we’d actually USED the freakin’ bomb.
I think with any country, then and now, the world saw the complete devestation in Japan and in my opinion, realized that no matter what the circumstances, that never needed to happen again.
Maybe I’m naive, but I whole-heartedly believe that no one is crazy enough now to use a nuclear weapon - that is of course, they wish to have their own a@@es blown off the face of the planet - because that is what would happen.
Fly planes into buildings? Blow them and as many people they can up in one blow? Yes, yes, yes, but nuclear weapon? No.
The thing that kills me is that McCain talks about being tough on national security, but to me, having a p!ssing contest with Russia is not a very secure thing to do - you know, to keep our citizens safe and all - if that’s important to you.

Ah yes, it’s our fault. Don’t you just love the blame America first crowd?
“We’ve got to send a clear message to Russia and unify our allies,” Obama told a crowd of supporters in Virginia. “They can’t charge into other countries. Of course it helps if we are leading by example on that point.”
I’ll let Allahpundit take it from here.
Here’s a newsflash, champ: Russia’s foreign minister did indeed invoke a case of U.S. military action in his Journal op-ed the other day, but it wasn’t Bush and the Middle East that he had in mind. I don’t begrudge the guy his leftist cant, but at least put some meat on the bone. How, precisely, would Russian actions have been different if we hadn’t invaded Iraq? Georgia and Ossetia have been fighting since Obama was in his 20s. Are we playing another game of Time Machine here, in which the war somehow becomes a justification even for misfortunes that preceded it?

Actually, I it’s the “America is perfect in every way” folks that are not just annoying, but generally at fault for all our nations ills.
If you love your country you make it better, you don’t sweep the mess under the carpet!

Paul, I don’t thing morality and fidelity are mutually exclusive. Clinton might not have been impeached, but he probably won’t be cannonized either. I’m also curious as to what perilous time he led us through. Unless you’re referring to the probabitly that his skirt chasing distracted him from trying to do anything esle and messing it up, national security notwithstanding.

I think fidelity is but one aspect of morality. Just an interesting observation that the hound dogs can come through in the clutch and the faithful ones have other morality shortcomings.
Mrs. G
Did up a not-too-bad chile verde last night. About to take it to the folks. Along with some fresh Anaheims to roast for chili rellenos. Still on a quest for the ultimate meatball, though. Thought I about had it until I was traveling through western NY, was going through a small town in the evening, looked up a small side street and saw an Italian restaurant - Calarco’s. I ordered meatballs as an appetizer. And was astounded. The waitress said the grandmother came in every morning and made the meatballs and the sauce. So there you have it. The quest continues -
“Uranium-tipped cannolis?” Do they come with a ‘glowing’ recommendation?
your 2:03 - trivia time - know who delivered that line in Animal House? The one and only Kevin Bacon! And when the cool frat guys were steering the hapless stars into the group that wasn’t going to get accepted in one of the opening scenes, who was in that group? None other than Samuel L. Jackson.
And with that I must hit the road.

Jay just couldn’t help but be onomatopoetic with this topic. Shouldn’t you have included the roar of the Russian bear and the whine of the Republican party to be more politically correct though. The howling part perhaps belongs to coyote Bush and the hyena sound could easily be Cheney but it’s not a howl. Hyenas make more of a sickening laughing sound like this.

Well by Mrs. G’s logic, we conservatives are off the hook. Because we certainly don’t believe that America is perfect in every way. In fact we are quite certain that its government is anything but perfect, far too expansive and expensive.

AJC/DNC-M,
I’m sure The Dunce would answer your question anytime, anywhere, but what that means in Obumbler speak is no way, no how.
Mrs. G.,
It’s not just your spelling that’s suffering, that 2:30 makes no sense whatsoever as to who is and isn’t on your “hook.”
And since when does pointing out that The Dunce thinks a 2003 invasion caused hostilities that date back to 1991 and openly blames America for it mean that the person pointing this out thinks everything is perfect with the country?
Nothing could be further from the truth. We’ve turned Congress over to a bunch of children that do nothing but hold show trials, we’re on the verge of electing a full blown Marxist President, and no matter how screwed up these people get things we’re supposed to smile and send them another check. Then rather than fixing real things with this new check they turn around and send it to somebody else to buy another vote. Far from perfect if you ask me.

What I can not begin to understand is WHY anyone would ever willingly listen to the AM idiots at all. Now that would surely be my own little hell on earth to be compelled to hear rant after rant from a fat, percocet popping know nothing. Jeez, I just got the shivers even thinking about it.
I have thought from the beginning of the Georgia/Russia crisis that we may be backing the wrong guy. I think Russia may have some legitimate complaints with Georgia. If Mexico and Canada where planning a treaty with Venezuela, Cuba and North Korea to place defensive missile blockers on the Rio Grande border or Quebec I think we may somehow have a problem with that. I also agree with Jay’s question of just why in the hell are we footing the bill? This system is thought to cost around 5.2 billion dollars now, the actual cost will probably be much more. Right now we have a similar system in place else where that is only accurate 50% when tested on missiles deployed when they know the projectory angle and time they launched them. Call me crazy, but I do not think we will get that information before the launching of any real attack. I say if Poland and NATO want these things then use Euros to build them.
Bush and NATO have said these missiles are defensive, but the Russians view them as offensive. Just why are we poking Russia with a stick? I think they are ready to make nice, but will not tolerate missiles in their backyard, and neither would America.

The question was, “How many properties do you own?”, not houses, 3 of the seven are investment properties and this number has fluctuated over the years as these instruments ebb and flow for people of that particular financial status.
A better question would be, “How many of your properties did you buy at a reduced rate with the help of a convicted felon”.

It’s amazing that a man who has dedicated his life to serving this country with 20 years in the Air Force, 5 of that in a POW camp; 20 years in the Senate reaching accross the aisle, and you want to dismiss that as “who’s all the GOP could dig up”. I would remind you that the GOP was trying to cover him up.
Comparitively Obama is an empty suit, but because he’s got style and makes you excited, you’re willing to sink to any depth of rationale to disparage one of this country’s most honorable citizens.

The most trivial things excite you libs. How many houses McCain has??????
First off — could it be that McCain concerns himself with more important matters.
Second — I thought OBlahMa said wives were off limits. They’re Cindy’s homes?
Third — Do any of you have any idea how much of her time and money Cindy McCain devotes to charitable causes here in the states and abroad?
Last, but not least — I believe it was back during the 2004 elections, the Democrats said “a candidate’s (Kerry’s) wealth made no difference as long as he or she was trying to help the little guy.”
I’m surprised the above-it-all, intellectually superior OBlahMa grabbed on to this one. I read where it was a “lowly staffer” who got all excited (like you lowly bloggers) when he/she caught McCain’s remark. Then the whole headquarters was a buzz. Couldn’t wait to put something together.
Elitism has nothing to do with wealth.
It has everything to do with attitude. Words aside….it’s when One is so full of himself, that he has difficulty relating to the average man on the street. Sound like anybody you poll errrrrrr I mean know?
