Democrats coming out of the woodwork

While most of the polls show a fairly tight presidential race, it doesn’t feel that way. As I mentioned in comments a while back, the body language and attitude of the Obama campaign indicate they believe Obama’s going to win, while the language and attitude of the McCain camp also indicate they believe Obama will win.

And maybe I’m wrong, but I don’t remember polls showing such widely divergent results, with some showing an Obama lead of 3 or 4 points and others claiming an Obama lead of 15 or so. Here’s a news story from the South Florida Sun-Sentinel that suggests one reason why this race has been difficult to pin down.

“An escalating number of voters registering as Democrats is providing evidence that the 2008 election could produce a wave of support for Barack Obama — and trigger a decades-long shift of party allegiance that could affect elections for a generation.

The numbers are ominous for Republicans: Through May, Democratic voter registration in Broward County was up 6.7 percent. Republican registrations grew just 3 percent while independents rose 2.8 percent.

Democrats have posted even greater gains statewide, up 106,508 voters from January through May, compared with 16,686 for the Republicans.

“It’s a huge swing,” says Marian Johnson, political director for the Florida Chamber of Commerce. “I looked at that and said, ‘Wow.” “

A gain of 90,000 voters for Democrats is a large number in Florida, where elections have been excruciatingly close. It also reflects a difference in passion among the two parties that could have repercussions all the way down the ticket to dogcatcher.

This is the first Presidential election for my second child. I am happy to have produced one of those new registered Democrats.

After watching 2 of the Democratic Senatorial debates, I think I will support Rand Knight. I like the fact that he is young and has a Science background. That is something that has been ignored for the last 8 years with our Intelligent Design theorist in charge. Young people are feeling disenfranchised by this administration who have mortgaged our country to the Chinese and Japanese for generations to come. It is past time to actually do something about alternative energy and our addiction to foreign oil. Enough rhetoric already. Young people have to live in this world after the Bushes are dead and gone, that is if there is anything of this world left for them.

Well, Jay, there’s an old saying I’m sure you have heard. Don’t count your chickens before they hatch.

So Democrats are coming out of the woodwork. Yep, we already noticed that with Pelosi and Reid reminding us of Demo talent from the woodwork. Less than 10% approval and you think people want more of the same in a President? No way.

I hope you also have a feeling about the emerging Napoleonic Complex Obama is developing. A speech at the Brandenberg Gate!! A Dem nomination speech at a huge football stadium!! What next? A speech from the Washington monument?

Fortunately, Republicans already know their way to the polls wihout a lot of pushing and shoving. They also know they have an American hero with proven experience to make a strong President. I too have a feeling. McCain 2008 and onward.

How utterly ridiculous, I believe the political parties in 30 AD were made up of the Jews and the Romans with some Pharisees thrown in. Before you go GOP@9:36 and I am glad you have a job.

Jesus preached love, forgiveness and humility. But he led no protests, even against the Roman government. He saidRender unto Caesar the things which are Caesar’s and unto God the things that are God’s.(Matt. 22:21)

Jesus moved against injustice as he did when he threw the cheating money changers out of the temple.

He wouldn’t make the best Democrat. He would never lead a protest march against the government or hate the man running the country, a common trait now among Democrats.

But let us not use religion for political fodder. Let’s call it faith and keep it that way.

A vote for Obama is purely an emotional decision, baseless in any factual or logical reason to do so.

You’ll notice that most writers like Jay only talk about how it “feels good” to vote for a non-white…or “everyone else is doing it, so I will too”.

To GOPs got to go:

Calm down. It’s a joke! You are way too serious sometimes.

But ……….. since you mentioned Jesus, He was extremely narrow minded on the most important issue :

“I am the way, the truth and the life, no one comes to the Father, but through Me.”

“Except ye believe in Me, you are dead in your sins.”

“He that believeth in Me is not condemned but he that believeth not is condemned already because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.”

Bottom line: Jesus was very liberal in that He associated with “publicans and sinners.” However, He was also very conservative regarding the path to eternal life.

Everyone is free to choose !

Of one thing there is no doubt. This year’s federal elections should be interesting. A lot remains to be debated between now and November. But one thing is obvious…there has been significant movement toward the Democrats. Some of that may be Republicans switching parties, some of it may be Independents deciding to align with Democrats, some of it is most certainly new, young voters. But the trend is there.

Now if this change simply means that red states are redder and blue states are bluer, then expect a very tight race. However, if it means that red states may tend toward blue, then a sea change is about to occur.

Polls indicate unilaterally that Americans are disappointed in Congress. Yet it is also being reported that Congress will likely move strongly toward a more significant Democratic majority. And when all is said and done, that would likely be the most significant outcome of the election, regardless of who wins the presidency.

A vote for Obama is purely an emotional decision, baseless in any factual or logical reason to do so.

Wrong, NRB. My vote for Obama, like many millions of others’, will be based on two things:

  • An analysis of Obama’s platform and plans for America.

  • The hard-won experience of seeing what a disaster this latest Republican regime has been.

  • By hillbilly ragger

    Mornin’, rational people.

NRB @ 10.20, if you’re going to run with that hoary riff that liberals base their votes on “emotions,” you’re going to have to ignore the long list of silliness that’s at the core of conservative votes, including abortion, gun control, the death penalty, pre-emptive war, progressive taxation, a nationalized single-payer healthcare and subsidized mass transit. None of the conservative positions are based on anything like logic; all of them are based more on appeals to emotion than to reason.

To that end, if a liberal wants to admit that beyond the sound Obama policy positions, that it might actually feel good to cast a vote for an African-American for President, that’s just tough. Deal with it.

As for N-GA’s business @ 7.42, well of course “Americans are disappointed in Congress.” Americans hoped that Congress would behave like… well, a congress controlled by an opposition party. In truth, though, they’re controlled by the coupla-dozen Bush Dog Democrats in the House, who provide the swing vote the same way Kennedy determines what’s Constitutional in the Supreme Court, these days.

Put more liberal Dems in Congress, get us a President who won’t veto every rational piece of legislation to come down the pike, and you’ll see the approval numbers back up. Way up.

So since most of the national polls are showing a very close race you have to go of your way to find a south Florida report, showing that the messiah is still way in the lead. This is what is know as propaganda people. Jay knows that the facts are not playing out the way he wishes so he writes stories to make it seem like it is. And the more he says it the more people will believe it is true. I guess the left just hopes they can change reality before the Nov elections. Good luck.

If you smell something funning in politics this year don’t worry it’s just BO.

    By ByteMan

    July 14, 2008 9:01 AM | Link to this

The polls that show that people are disappointed by Congress are a crock. If you follow up the approval rating question with a question about the approval rating of the person’s specific representatives in Congress, you’ll find that they aren’t as disapproving of their own representative as much as everyone else’s representatives.

On the other hand, the disapproval rating for the President is more accurate, since there’s no one else doing the same job for the people living the next state over.

And, yes, Republican leaders are all saying that they are having a problem with their “branding” this year in the wake of Sen. Craig, Rep. DeLay, a war no one wants to fight in Iraq, sinking economy, etc. Couldn’t have happened to a nicer bunch of megalomaniacs who openly stated they would be in the majority for a generation.

I think Mr. Bush’s cowardice colors his entire presidency. By cowardice I do not mean his lack of active service during Vietnam. Instead I mean his fear of facing people who disagree with him. He won’t address audiences that might dissent from his position. He gives policy speeches only to friendly groups or armed services members who cannot voice negative opinions. He cannot tolerate or answer difficult questions from the press. These traits disqualify him as the leader of a democracy.

The only poll that matters is the one in November. The key to this election, as always, is which way the undecided swing. If this does turn out to be a major shift the Republicans have no one to blame but themselves. They had their shot and blew it. I would never be so presumptive as to speak for Jesus but I think His reaction to either party would be much like His reaction to the moneychangers in the temple.

Red Stater @ 9.43 (ok, the guy who actually did the parody) — yeah. That’s actually a totally separate point from the emotion-laden reasons conservative take the positions they do on so many issues, but it’s a real good one.

For so many election cycles, running at least back to 1980 and probably before that, Republicans have tried to make the elections about “have a beer-with” types; they always wanted American voters to set aside their feelings about issues and make the election about The Guy.

That’s how we got stuck with a corporate w******* from California for eight years, and a faux-cowboy from Connecticut for another eight. Neither Reagan nor Dim Son’s positions reflected that of the nation at large, but they were convinced that, somehow, those guys were more “trustworthy,” more “want-to-have-a-beer-with” types, than the more rational Democratic choice.

And don’t even get me started on that filthy campaign against Dukakis by Poppy Bush…

And with that, I must sally forth for the better part of the day in order to put food on my family.

This is just too funny to not share:

    From the Telegraph.uk

President George Bush: ‘Goodbye from the world’s biggest polluter’

The American leader, who has been condemned throughout his presidency for failing to tackle climate change, ended a private meeting with the words: “Goodbye from the world’s biggest polluter.”

He then punched the air while grinning widely, as the rest of those present including Gordon Brown and Nicolas Sarkozy looked on in shock.

One official who witnessed the extraordinary scene said afterwards: “Everyone was very surprised that he was making a joke about America’s record on pollution.”

    AND if that’s not enough:

Mr Bush also faced criticism at the summit after Silvio Berlusconi, the Italian Prime Minister, was described in the White House press pack given to journalists as one of the “most controversial leaders in the history of a country known for government corruption and vice”.

The White House apologised for what it called “sloppy work” and said an official had simply lifted the characterisation from the internet without reading it.

Can we just lock him in a closet until November?

A comment on Busch (@10:18) - It needs to be pointed out that at that meeting where Bush made the ‘worlds biggest polluter’ joke that it was pointed out that since the Kyoto treated that the US did not sign the US has reduced pollution by 3% while all the other signers of the treaty had increased their pollution. And soon China and India will surpass us in raw pollution numbers. Thus, in maybe the next 4 years the US will no longer be the #1 polluter in the world.

2004 - Xenophobes, chickenhawk warmongers, homophobes, fundamnentalists come out of the woodwork to re-elect the single most incompetent man ever to hold the office

2008 - Xenophobes, chickenhawk warmongers, homophobes, fundamnentalists, white racists come out of the woodwork in a KKKrusade to keep a black man out of the White House.

    NOTE TO AL:

The only thing that Reid and Pelosi have not done that their Democratic base demanded was to impeach the lying, conniving war criminals, George W. Bush and Dick Cheney.

Other than that, what could anyone have expected? The Democratic majority was too slim to pass any meaningful legislation, and Bush loomed above them, threatening to veto anything that wasn’t promulgated by a fellow Republican.

Clean up your own act first, Al. You Republicans have destroyed our country in a few short years…but you still want to blame Democrats for everything you can think of.

Yeah, well there hasn’t been a recession yet, but liberal pundits keep telling us it feels that way.

It must be nice to be a liberal. You don’t what have to be concerned with what is, you can just make yourself feel better by deciding based on how you feel.

Just a couple of years ago the Republican congress with the help of President George W Bush gave America one of the biggest socialist programs since the FDR days! Medicare Part D.

Sen Craig, Sen Vitter, Med Part D, huge deficits, the bridges to nowhere, NCLB, Terry Schiavo, Foley………Oh yes the good ol’ days!!!!

Skeptic Tank ..Who did I blame for what? I asked a question? You couldn’t answer it. I don’t buy into the doom and gloom the liberal media has convinced you and many others that the country is ruined. I can assure you we’re still the envy of the rest of the world. Millions want a piece of what you and I enjoy. Many are willing to dye to get here just for the oppurtunity. Our government and yes our president is not and never will be OUR country. We are our country Liberal / socialists don’t understand that. Our parents and those before us made this country what it is the evil George Bush hasn’t ruined it. Get your info from something other than CNN. This congress and presidents both party’s exist inspite of the horrible jobs they do, because of us., out here doing what we’re supposed to do. We should demand they do their jobs, but we don’t we’re so locked up in our own “what can I get” worlds. Socialists policies aren’t going to as you say un-ruin us.

Obama is not a “black man” since he is half white. In addition, he is a very inexperienced, poor candidate. We Republicans didn’t put forth our best candidate and you SURE DIDN’T get your best one either.

By the way : If someone is not smart enough to have a photo ID (or someone from the Democrat Party can’t get them one) they DON’T need to be voting.

    MIKE:

The problems we face as a nation today come at the heels of 12 years of Republican Congressional rule and 7 years of a Republican in the White House. Perhaps our country is not destroyed, but it has been disabled GREATLY by poor policy, grandstanding and propagandizing in lieu of leadership, and a huge divide in our population encouraged by the right wing radio fanatics and FOX News.

My views are extraordinarily moderate, and as such, I seek a similar representative for Congress and for the White House. My disgust with Republicans and their slimy arrogance knows no bounds, however.

In a country with only two viable political parties, I refuse to reward incompetence with my vote. Democrats get my vote by default in 2008.

I don’t need to listen to the “doom and gloom” of the so-called liberal media to determine that our economy is in the tank. I work in the mortgage/real estate industry, and I can assure you, new home sales, resales, and refinances are at a 30-year low. And this represents only one sector of our economy.

The problem with you is that you are one of the flock: regurgitating buzzwords placed in your mouth by Rush and Sean and all those other “fair and balanced” folks. Hard to take you very seriously when you speak in symbols rather than in coherent thoughts.

Your fear of a socialist society is laughable. Whomever wins the presidency will have to undo 8 years of George W. Bush. There will be no time for the tomfoolery you attempt to scare us with.

The problems we face today are largely due to the ineptitude of leadership in Washington, D.C. If you don’t believe that the decisions of Congress or the President have an impact on the economy or our foreign policy or on our everyday life in America, then you are looney tunes.

I also listened to Limbaugh et al. lambast Clinton, and in truth, they continue to do so, even today. His listeners hang on every word he says, and they regularly regurgitate that crap on these blogs. Although I wouldn’t say that Clinton was the greatest president we ever had, I would venture to say that the criticisms we hear of him are largely predicated on partisan poison.

Bush, however, has been an unmitigated disaster, and it will take years to extricate ourselves from his avarice. That’s not a liberal, or a Democrat, or even a Republican speaking.

It’s the voice of the majority.

the truth is there for all to see, the republicans have screwed things up really bad, they take credit for things they don’t do and balme everyone else but themselves for the evils they caused, how cowardly and shameful. to support republicans now after all we have seen is about the most unpatriotic thing you can do. if the republican party was what they claim to be that would be different, but they aren’t who they claim they are. and that’s why they shouldn’t be supported because the way they do business hurts this country and the bottom line. bush has made carter and clinton look like saints. no president will ever be perfect. but none have been as horrible as the greedy idiot we have now. stop the entitlement programs of illegal immigration, oil companies and iraq brought to us by bush and cheney! if you still support these jerks you might as well be fighting for osama the way you have divided this country and supporting people who have done so much to harm it!

To someone earlier: I don’t live in a double wide. I live in a house I built with my own hands and paid cash for as I went. (And which according to the county assessors is above average in value). However I don’t look down on people who do live in double wides. I think in reality I’m more tolerant than lots of those who preach tolerance.

Bottom line, the United States was, is and will always be a republic. We are not a democracy and never be. Until State rights are restored we will be in this fight. While neither of these are expressly stating restoring them, McCain is not trying to take more away (ie federal health care).

This election is going to get ugly. Hopefully the common sense of the people will prevail and the media lemmings will look past the rock star images.

I am absolutely amazed at both sides of the contest! The Democrats say we need to install an untried and inexperienced person in the White House because the current Republican side has made a disaster of our economy, has falsely led us into an unneeded war, and any other thing they can think of just to regain the presidential office they lost eight years ago. They truly believe he can deliver on his harangue about “change”. On the other hand, the Republicans claim their man has the wisdom of experience molded during five years of incarceration in a Vietnamese prison.

The fact is that they are both wrong! The person who holds power in the Office of the President, has, in fact, very little power to change anything, because all significant powers to effect change result from laws. It is the Congress (House of Representatives and Senate) who make the laws and the President only signs them or vetoes them. If we really want to put the country “back on track”, the power to do it lies with the Congress, not with the President. Congress screwed it up, and now only Congress can fix it. To effect change there must be a drastic change in the makeup of the Congress. It matters little if the President is either a Democrat or a Republican. Except that there is one significant danger.

The Constitution provides for a “balance of power” between the Executive and the Legislative. I think the proof that the balance works was demonstrated during the Clinton Administration between 1994 and 2000. A Republican Congress coupled with a Democratic President, made true strides. The Federal deficit was eliminated and a surplus was achieved for the first time in decades. The economy boomed! Jobs were available and people who were qualified worked in them.

If we want to elect a Democrat for President, then elect a Republican Congress. If we want a Democratic Congress,* then elect a Republican President.*

The people are really down on Congress and it’s lack of progress, that’s true. But, according to the Wall Street Journal, a very conservative paper, the people don’t blame the Democrats. They recognize the obstructive, sour-grapes actions of the Republicans. The WSJ (7/7/08) reported 57% of Americans had a FAVORABLE view of the Democratic Party, up 10% from July of 06. On the other hand, 53% had an UNFAVORABLE view of the Republican Party, a percentage unchanged from 06. The American people are smarter than most give them credit for. As Reagan would say, are you better off than you were 8 years ago? If you say yes, then you are making over $700,000 a year.

Hmmm, it’s amusing that you still babble on about sex as though it were an issue of ACTUAL IMPORTANCE to Americans. I know the gay-marriage hysteria isn’t working this time around, and the “closet Muslim” campaign is stillborn… but really? Sex? That’s the BEST distraction you can come up with to avoid talking about the issues?

American have seen and rejected the folly of neoconservatism… Bush has doomed the GOP for at least this year, and possibly many more to come. We want a liberal, Democratic government, and that’s what we’re voting for this fall. Not a thing you can do about it except whine, either.
