“The devil went down to Georgia, he was lookin’ for a soul to steal”

I still haven’t seen convincing evidence that Georgia could be in play for Barack Obama; two consecutive polls by Insider Advantage claim the race is tight, but no other pollster has come close to producing similar results. Until that happens, it’s all just bluster.

That said, the GOP explanation for Obama’s interest in Georgia is downright ludicrous. He’s spending time and money here because he’s in trouble in Pennsylvania and Ohio? Oh come on, at least give us something plausible.

First off, that’s factually incorrect. Obama’s up by about 8 points in Pennsylvania, about 4 points in Ohio, according to pollster.com. McCain would love to be in that kind of trouble.

Second, if Obama really were in trouble up north, wouldn’t he stay in that region to try to fix the problem? Campaigning in Georgia to fix your problems in the Rust Belt would be like responding to 9/11 by attacking a country that had nothing to do with it. Only fools would do something like that.

The best explanation is psychological. There’s a sense of panic in GOP circles that a blowout may be coming this fall, and Obama’s folks want to feed that panic. If that fear grows, McCain will have problems raising money, enthusiasm for his candidacy will decline, GOP turnout will fall and intra-party squabbling will increase. So the Democrats want to feed that fear — they want to make it grow big and fat until it consumes the soul of the McCain campaign.

“One of the premises of our campaign is we don’t just intend to win, we want a mandate,” Obama says, and you don’t hear talk like that from McCain.

It’s still a long way to November, and a lot can change. The race is far from over. But Obama coming to Georgia is like a football team walking onto the opponent’s home field and dancing on its emblem. It’s about intimidation.

Okay, Justice lovers listen up. Look at the tone of Wooten’s column lately. If they really believed their own phony polls, (showing McCain with a lead anywhere has got to be a lie), then they would write with more confidence.

Instead, they are writing like frightened little baby bunnies. They know they’re going to get creamed.

They can phony up the polls all they want. Truman. Remember truman in 1948. A monster had come out of World War 2. MacArthur. Mac was the most dangerous man our republic had ever seen. He came close to dooming america to endless war with chinese communists. It was a damn near thing, too. Only there was this ridiculous little democrat who stood in his way. He was a funny looking, harmless little turtle of a man. A david against mac’s goliath.

Then a peculiar thing happened that saved the world: Truman’s wife fancied herself an opera singer, and actually performed arias from Mozart’s “Figaro” in front of the entire congress. Well, just like in the movie, which came first, “Citizen Kane”, the diva took a dive. It was a social catastrophe, and the Washington post reviewer was cruel in his restraint in the morning’s review. Truman fired off a letter, like a comment in a blog today, which actually threatened to punch the reviewer in the nose. The Post printed that letter and Truman was the laughing stock of the country.

Now, all this was occuring when MacArthur was waving his fist at Chairman Mao, and insisting we nuke China, oh, just a couple of nukes is all we’ll need, maybe three or four, but no more than ten, for sure, and china will see things our way, and Korea will be united under the flag of democracy.. Hooray!

Truman, needing a miracle to save his lame duck presidency, fired MacArthur in a move that Tailgunner Joe called “treason”. After the ticker tape parade, the Monster was gone. Macarthur just faded away….

Just like conservatism will do: Just fade away. Conservatism has become our military arm, at least the contracting and funding part of our military, so, in a sense, conservative are soldiers, and they must now just…..fade…….AWAY!!!

And I think it’s a damn shame.

Ike warned about the M.I.C. Why? What was Ike thinking about? Was there defense contractors demanding that we invade Vietnam? He sent advisers. He must have been under great pressure from the joint chiefs to attack without mercy. Nobody expects the attack without mercy, and the vietcong would have been sitting ducks, that’s 4sure, that’s 4dangsure.

Ike must have then reviewed Dewey’s ability to stop Macarthur from invading China during the Korean War. Dewey was WAY ahead in the polls on election night in 1948. Phony polls. Just like here in Ga.

Ike then must have realized that our republic was in great danger of becoming some perpetual war machine, which it has become.

We simply make war like bees make honey. We need a leader. Which brings me to Obama.

If McCain does decide to come down to Georgia though, I sure hope he gets grilled on his use of those mean and nasty words to describe his, what is it, second, wife. He might just be fiddlin’ to a different tune and willin’ to make a deal — that ole son of a gun. After all, some of the more devout of the right-wing members of the GOP down here in the south don’t take too kindly to some of McCain’s escapades. Is that the new topic of desperation in the wingnut memos you all receive telling you to say the same exact thing in an attempt to spread propgandistic lies?

That ridiculous comment (almost verbatim alike everytime) is usually followed by “his association of known domestic terrorists.”

Really Dusty, if you’re going to continue the lies, you need to at least keep up with what the memo says.

It goes like this:

“Obama couldn’t get security clearance [followed by] because of his known association with domestic terrorists”

You forgot the last part. I thought I’d help you out so you wouldn’t look so silly amongst your fellow wingnuts.

Are you going to start talking about his association with KNOWN domestic terrorists? I’ve heard that alot here, and I’ve asked, but never received an answer: Who are these known domestic terrorists that Obama is associating with?

Bosch @ 11.26, the Luckovich comments threads are not worth mourning. They were infested with the same two or three fools posting the same copy/pasted garbage from Freeperville; it was, obviously, not representative of Luckovich’s actual online audience, which overwhelmingly enjoys the man’s work.

Mainly, I suspect that they dumped it because Mike’s contract doesn’t call for him baby-sitting a bunch of whiny trolls. I could be wrong.

Anyway, I just wanted to second your befuddled, “WTF?” questions for Dusty, who continues to harp about this nonsense that Obama “can’t get security clearance.”

The wingnuts seem to think that someone, anyone, is going to be terrified on account of this guy.

Same old Jay Bookman from all the way back in his North Adams days. Just make up something and then write your story around it. For instance:

That said, the GOP explanation for Obama’s interest in Georgia is downright ludicrous. He’s spending time and money here because he’s in trouble in Pennsylvania and Ohio?

The two prevalent stories the GOP has for why Obama is spending time and money in Georgia are that a) he’s naive enough to think he can win here and b) that he has enough of a money advantage that he can force McCain to waste money defending a safe state.

I haven’t heard any credible republican say anything about the reason being that Obambi is in trouble in Ohio or Pennsylvania. Wouldn’t it be fun to see Jay struggle to write an article if he had to deal with actual facts instead of the voices in his head?

“I haven’t heard any credible republican say anything about the reason being that Obambi is in trouble in Ohio or Pennsylvania. Wouldn’t it be fun to see Jay struggle to write an article if he had to deal with actual facts instead of the voices in his head?”

From today’s AJC:

Georgia’s two U.S. senators, Republicans Johnny Isakson and Saxby Chambliss, held a conference call to lambaste the Democratic hopeful and his claim that he can win Georgia in November.

“They would like nothing better than to crack a Southern state. And Georgia is one they would like to go after,” said Isakson.

He said he believes Obama is focusing on Georgia because Democrats are having problems in the swing states of Pennsylvania and Ohio, despite the fact that Obama leads McCain in Pennsylvania polls by an average of 8 percentage points, and in Ohio by an average of 5 points.”

Look, Obama accepted no responsibility for the racist comments his surrogates hurled at the Clintons during primary season.

I haven’t received any of the e-mails you mentioned but citizens are free to express their concerns over Obama’s comments in “Dreams of My Father” just as Obama’s surrogates expressed concerns of overt racism against their candidate.

Obama’s book is on audio. He, himself said that comments he made in the book have created problems for him politically.

He keeps saying “words matter”. Let’s see how his book, narrated in his own words, might impact his run.

Have you read Ayaan Hirsi Ali’s memoir “Infidel”?

Before arriving in D.C. to work at the American Enterprise Institute, Ali endured genital mutilation, malaria, a nearly fatal beating by her Quran teacher, a brutal civil war, unspeakable poverty, parental rejection, a knife attack, a coerced marriage and several months of forced hiding after her film collaborator, Theo Van Gogh, was murdered and her life threatened.

In her memoirs she wrote about the blessings she found in America.

What was it Obama wrote about in “Dreams of My Father”? It sure wasn’t about his blessings, and he certainly had plenty he could have acknowledged. More than Ali had.

I would like to see McCain reach out to people who do not favor him. I would like for the elites to speak to African Americans who are not of the socioeconomic status such as his! I would like to hear his plan for the GAS, ECONOMY, and other things that concern our country. What does he plan on doing to repair race relations. I am really interest but I guess you will paint him as the SAINT WHO VISITED GEORGIA. I would like for you to retract your title with something less impactive and it has less implications.

Jay,

Yes I see how easy that was. Since you made a glaring error of fact while trying to portray yourself as the one in the know you didn’t really have any choice. Now here’s my original statement:

I haven’t heard any credible republican say anything about the reason being that Obambi is in trouble in Ohio or Pennsylvania.

When that becomes an error of fact I’ll be sure to let you know.

Do you REALLY think Obama could get a security clearance? Why don’t you read his past history before you make a judgment. Or maybe you are like Bosch. If you don’t know about his security clearance, then it is a lie.

I would NOT care about Obama’s security clearance BUTTTT he wants to be president of the United States. That makes a difference. I do not want anything that even suggests subversion about our President. Don’t you care to find out or should I call you a blind follower?

Dusty, it doesn’t matter whether I think Sen. Obama can get a security clearance. (And I know about William Ayers and his past as a Weatherman.) What matters is that you presented as a fact that he wouldn’t be able to get one, when you were accusing “lefty Dems” of not writing about facts.

That’s kinda what his minister of twenty years said:

Now when I see the phrase “great politician”, I have to presume that he is a run-of-the-mill politician guilty of “great” exaggerations.

Jay,

My reading of the story you mentioned sounds as if it could just as easily mean that Obama could potentially hurt down ticket Democrats in Ohio and Pennsylvania. It also sounds very much like it may have been a joke, but let me ask you a question. What were the polling spreads during the summer prior to the 1988, 2000, and 2004 Presidential elections?

Oh, and RW? You ain’t foolin’ anybody but yourself.

Exactly what was ^^ that supposed to mean?

As far as the states you mention, I fully believe that Obama wins Pennsylvania and McCain wins Georgia. I believe that of the three only Ohio is in play. Do you think that’s pretty much on the mark or am I ‘foolin’ myself?”

Now let’s see who’s really fooling themselves.

That said, the GOP explanation for Obama’s interest in Georgia is downright ludicrous. He’s spending time and money here because he’s in trouble in Pennsylvania and Ohio?

Your evidence of that widespread GOP explanation is a throwaway line by one of two Senators on a conference call.

Fear is a manifestation of the mind.

Jay can knock as hard as he wants. I’m not letting him in.

I’d say that there’s a greater fear among the left-wing fringe that Obama isn’t what he portrayed himself to be during the primaries. A lot of his former contributors are withholding their future donations in an escrow account until he comes back to his leftist roots.

You’re right, RW, the polls this far out in previous election years proved highly unreliable, which is why I’m very cautious about predicting this presidential race.
