Drawing the line at Saxby Chambliss
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
from The Augusta Chronicle and Morris News Service:
ATLANTA — The chairman of the Republican Senatorial Campaign Committee says Sen. Saxby Chambliss will be a key part of the firewall the party wants to build against stronger Democratic control of Congress.
Sen. John Ensign, R-Nev., set a floor on the number of Senate seats the party must control: 41.
“The number that we get to is really, really important in the U.S. Senate,” he said. “That’s one of the reasons Saxby absolutely must hold his seat.”
… By holding at least 41 Senate seats, the GOP would prevent the Democrats from having the 60 votes required to end filibusters, which prevent votes on bills.
Wow. That’s a pretty low floor, considering that the GOP now holds 49 seats in the Senate. So they’re hoping not to lose more than eight seats, with Chambliss as their firewall?
I’m guessing that plans for that “permanent Republican majority” have been shelved for the time being.

Thanks for mentioning that “permanent majority” riff from Rove.
It may be a little rude to ask at this late date, but seriously—did that not set off any red flags among conservatives that maybe, just maybe, they were dealing with madmen?
What kind of lunatic believes his political party will be in the majority “permanently?”

Anyway, if the Republican minority in the Senate gets to be extrordinarily obstructionist, I predict that the Dems will start muttering darkly about a new “nuclear option” to eliminate the filibuster altogether.
That’ll get ‘em to cooperate, probably.
Hey, anyone else looking forward to seeing Joe Lieberman assigned to a windowless basement office and stripped of his committee assignments?

So Bookman is still in “read and duck” mode. He rails against coverups, but when called on his own active participation in the same, Bookman goes completely silent.
What does it say about Bookman’s credibility, when he won’t address why the AJC editorial board refused to address the FALSIFIED DISCIPLINE DATA in Atlanta Public Schools? How is Bookman any better than the politicians he complains about?
The Dept. of Education cites APS for falsified discipline data that claimed 40 schools had ZERO discipline problems and Bookman says nothing? 40 schools with ZERO discipline problems? In APS? And the AJC lets Asst. Supt. Kathy Augustine spin it with “perhaps are reforms are working so well, there are no discipline problem to report” and Bookman lets that whopper go completely unchallenged?
Why won’t Bookman step up and address why he was completely silent on this?
And why was Bookman completely silent on the subsequent story of South Atlanta reporting no “major incidents” while the Atlanta Police Dept. records show over FIFTY calls to the school?
APS knew they were caught red handed, so they told the AJC “we need more time to study the data.”
And the AJC let them get away with it, because there was ZERO follow up (even though the original reporter did a half page spread with the superintendent, she refused-or was ordered-not to follow up her story) and Bookman did his part in the coverup by saying absolutely nothing yet again.
Where was YOUR voice, Mr. Bookman?
And how are you any better than the politicians you complain about in Washington, when you actively engage in coverups in your own backyard to suit your political agenda?

Jay,
Come on now. It’s not much of a stretch for the Republican Party to expect Saxby Chambliss to hold his seat while national sentiment favors the Democratic Party. Saxby just needs to wave the farm bill around as his proof. And, if that isn’t enough, he can always pull out his secret weapon that he keeps stashed out at Lockheed — he calls it “Bringing Home the Military Bacon”. Republican, YES. Conservative, NO.

Oh my,… With Boxer, Shumer, Waxman, Maxine Waters, Franks, Durban, etc. etc. acting like Democratic Dumbo Roadblocks, Bookman wishes to cast shadows on Georgia’s own Saxby. Saxby looks like wheat among the chaff in that Congress. We need more like him.
I doubt that Republican plans for a majority have “been shelved”, as Bookman so desires. They have simply gone under cover from the snoops and daggers of dawdling donkey dimwits.
As MacArthur said: “I shall return.” Get ready Republicans!!

You are so right Dusty we have not shelved plans to go “undercover.” I hate that word. Good God, nothing good ever comes from undercover operations. What an embarrassment to good honest Americans.
Us Republicans will always be there, hiding in the closet, until the appropriate time. Nobody will be able to keep us in the the closet for ever. Nobody. No matter how much they stall we will be back. Remember its the Republicans that take a wide stance on the issues. We are not all tapped out. By any means.
I am proud to say Saxby Chambliss and I are on the same side.

Tell you what hillbilly ragger.
I’ll stop just as soon as Bookman is willing to adress his complete silence on the discipline problems, the FALSIFIED DATA and the brutal assaults on APS teachers without the tribunal process being legally followed.
Now since this issue has been going on for years, can you give us one good reason hillbilly ragger that the AJC editorial board shouldn’t be called on not commenting on it? After all, this isn’t happening in Washington, it’s happening right here in Atlanta.
That you would come on here and defend the Bookman for not addressing FALSIFIED DISCIPLINE DATA, and the brutal assault of teachers doesn’t say much for your character.

WhatWillLauraDo, I’m not here to defend “the Bookman” (is that like “the Google”?); I’m hear to tell you to STFU about your pet peeve issue and take it someplace where somebody cares.
Like, say, a thread where it’s a topic being discussed?
