The Mystery of the Witchified Wife
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
I touched on this in an earlier posting, but I’ve been thinking about it ever since: Why do conservatives seem to identify the wives of Democratic nominees as legitimate Targets of Group Hate?
The venom directed at Hillary Clinton over the years was way over the top, and oddly, it seemed to decline in intensity once she began to build a political reputation and career of her own. In her presidential run, some on the conservative side even began to admit to a grudging admiration of her. And the original example of the Witchified Wife, of course, was Eleanor Roosevelt.
More recently, Teresa Heinz, wife of John Kerry, got a good dose of hate and ridicule, and these days the Right seems positively eager to make a target of Michelle Obama and cast her as the new Hillary, even to the point of fabricating excuses to attack her.
Just as they did with Hillary — you know, the lesbian who murdered Vince Foster ….
Keep it civil.

The witchification is directly proportional to the woman’s intelligence.
It is a gender-based swiftboating (swiftboobing?)

You seemed to forget one important aspect. Shortly after Clinton was elected in ‘92, Hillary decided to take up the issue of providing for a nationalized government run healthcare system. As soon as she decided to inject herself into a controversial issue, she became fair game, even though the country elected Bill, not Hillary.
As for Ms. Heinz, hard to not chastize her for being a stalwart conservative when married to Sen. Heinz and becoming an instant millionaire then transform into such an “enlightened” liberal after marrying Sen. Snowboarder, er Kerry.
As for the soon to be first lady, Mrs. Obama. I suppose the day Barack becomes inaugurated, that will be the SECOND time she is proud of the good ol US of A.
As for civility, have you read some of the stuff from the Daily Kos, Moveon.org, Air America? Keep it civil?…please, surely you jest

Something else I find hilarious. A question, I’d like to ask. Why is villifying Hillary considered hate speech, and yet those on the left directing the same type comments towards Laura Bush or Lynn Cheney is considered “freedom of speech”? Can you say hypocrite, Jay?

Hey Jimbo, I have a little project for you: Find examples in my work that you consider “hate-directed speech.” I’ve been writing stuff for years now, a lot of it’s on the Internet. So, find examples that you believe qualify as “hate speech” on my part and post them here.
You’ll find criticism of how President Bush has done his job - very poorly, in my mind and that of the vast majority of Americans by this point. But criticism of job performance does not constitute hate, I wouldn’t think.
But hey, define it as you will. Post your best examples of “hate-directed speech” under my byline. I’d be curious to see what you find.

Like a bad take on Maya Angelou, Bookman’s actions scream “Yet still I duck the question.”
Bookman complains about coverups in Washington, but is an active participant in covering up the discipline problems in Atlanta Public Schools. He shills about the “good school” his son goes to but says nothing about FALSIFIED DISCIPLINE DATA, and the deceit in covering it up.
The Dept. of Education cites APS for falsified discipline data that claimed 40 schools had ZERO discipline problems and Bookman says nothing. 40 schools with ZERO discipline problems? In APS? And the AJC lets Asst. Supt. Kathy Augustine spin it with “perhaps are reforms are working so well, there are no discipline problem to report” and Bookman lets that whopper go completely unchallenged?
Why won’t Bookman step up and address why he was completely silent on this?
And why was Bookman completely silent on the subsequent story of South Atlanta reporting no “major incidents” while the Atlanta Police Dept. records show over FIFTY calls to the school?
APS knew they were caught red handed, so they told the AJC “we need more time to study the data.”
And the AJC let them get away with it, because there was ZERO follow up (even though the original reporter did a half page spread with the superintendent, she refused-or was ordered-not to follow up her story) and Bookman did his part in the cover up by saying absolutely nothing yet again.
Where was YOUR voice, Mr. Bookman?
And how are you any better than the politicians you complain about in Washington, when you actively engage in coverups in your own backyard to suit your political agenda?

Question: Why is it when liberals are called on something they’re being hated? If I’m critical of Obama and his wife , why am I a racist? If I think the Clintons are liars and crooks and have been for a long, long time , does this mean I hate them? Bush has made teriible mistakes in retrospect in Iraq (even though Congress approved)at the time. If it would have gone well the band-wagon jumpers would be everywhere. Liberals as a rule are sad little bitter people that need a cause or someone to blame for their bitterness.

My main fault with Laura and Lynn is their utterly abysmal taste in men. I mean they may bake a great cookie or cake, but when it comes to smarts, they are light years behind Hilliary and Michelle. They are the kind of girls who marry for money and then retire to volunteer.
Please get over the whole murdering thing. Like I said before, Ken Star, been there, tried that angle. He managed to stay on the taxpayer’s payroll for 7 years. Alas, and all for naught.

Michelle Obama “witchified” herself. She did it all by herself and her ‘loose lips’ aka a ‘big mouth’. And I must say, she did a fine job.
Hillary “witchified” herself by her power driven personality. She was the “two for one” with Bill when Americans voted for one president only. She has overlooked, lied, pushed, twisted and dodged to keep herself in the political spotlight. Voters realize her actions are for the power of Hillary, not America.
I don’t think Eleanor Roosevelt cared what other people thought about her actions. FDR didn’t care either. This was a woman with a set of principles and nothing diverted her efforts. Unlike Hillary, her “power” was directed towards the benefit of others, not herself. History treats her well.
As for you, Mr. Bookman, your game is to present the synonyms of hate without saying the four letter word. A little suggestion, an exaggerated claim, a bit of anti-war free speech, a hint and insinuation here and there, facts and figures from liberal sources, representation of the liberal view only, and bad news only about America’s positions in war and terrorism or anything done by the President.
You can barely keep from saying Gore and Kerry REALLY won and Bush lost, a fabrication proven false many times. It is the liberal witch’s brew that has poisoned liberals into a realm without reason and little success. In your case, a Bookman exocism might help.

I think the real question here, Jay, has nothing really to do with conservatives and liberals, but this: Why do some candidates and their minions think it’s ok to go beyond the bounds of decent behavior and attack the spouses and families of the candidates?
Why was is ok for Bush’s surrogates to attack McCain in SC in 2000 for supposedly having a black child out of wedlock?
I think the answer is the saying I heard four years ago: in any battle between the ruthless and the spineless, the ruthless will always prevail.
Some candidates want to win so badly they’re willing to claim their opponent’s wife is something to “fear”. And some people are dumb enough to believe any e-mail chain letter they get from a buddy on the internet. (And remember: don’t buy oil from gas stations that get their oil from the Middle East! ;-)

The “mind” (as small and feeble as it is) of your typical “conservative” is a festering pustule of fear, hate and insecurity. Racism, xenophobia, fundamnentalism, gundamnentalism, anti-Semitism, anti-intellectualism, and homophobia provide the constructs of their “thinking”.
They are incapable of abstract thought, everything that is not them is the other and must be feared and fought, they are raised by their traditions of violence and hatred to become paranoid rage-filled lunatics, their “morality” social Darwinism, and despite their professed “individualism”, they are intellectual hyenas and jackals, traveling in packs, dragging the carcasses of worn out ideas, fulminating and festering their hate, their fear, and their core loathing of human decency.
Of course, sexism is part of their “mindset”. The dragging down of women allows them to hate their own mothers and wives, and daughters, keeping the fear of living and life that runs them close to their day to day life.
Let’s face it - the core constituency of the GOP today is men that hate women, and the pitiful women that love men that hate women. HIllary bashing, Theresa Heinz-Kerry bashing, Michelle bashing - fun for very small minds.

And I second Jay in asking for proof of the alleged “slurs” cast at Lynn Cheney and Laura Bush, other than their taste in husbands. The absolute WORST comment I’ve ever seen or heard about Laura Bush is “She’s kinda dull.” Wow, that’s really the same as branding Hillary a closet lesbian murderer, or Michelle a Marxist thug.

My dear, sweet, naive, “Oh Jay” Bookman, when a candidates wife assumes a traditional support role, she is left alone. When she turns into an intolerable gas bag (Teresa), takes policy positions (HRC), or defames America (MO), the wife becomes fair game. It is important, particularly with a candidate so light on legislative record as Obamalamadingdong to consider those persons (for the firt time proud of America!!!!!) with he he consorts.

The momemnt a wife of a candidate steps up to the podium to speak in favor of her husband and his campaign, she is fair game. Obama had his wife on the campaign trail yet he said she was off limits to be critized by Republicans. Duh. Mrs. Obama will probably afford the Republicans many more times to get on her case and listen to her speeches. I have a sneaky feeling this woman will not take a back seat to anyone and she is the type to think she can talk her way into your hearts, minds and living rooms but all the while we look and listen we realize there is something a little off center about this woman that we just don’t trust. Michelle Obama seems to be hiding a personal agenda a mile wide. Kind of like her backside.

Jay,
My problem is that you tend to equate criticism (in this context—of wives) as “hate speech,” but don’t extend the definition to the actions of the left.
I don’t think the Michelle Obama stuff as hateful at all. She acted as a spokesperson for the campaign, made dumb statements, and people repeat them. What is the problem? If you get into the public arena, you’re gonna get the attention you crave, good or bad.
As for the left, what do you call the garbage that people like Keith Olbermann or Maher spew? Hollywood? The comments about the Bush daughters? The jokes about Reagan’s disease and Heston’s death? Basically I think you pick and choose what personal attacks to care about. I also think a lot of what you reference doesn’t constitute illegitimate attack.
Unfortunately, this is simply another “campaign” post where you lash out at the right in an attempt to promote your own political leanings.

A few things:
If you don’t think Cindy McCain is the focus of hate speech, you don’t read Daily Kos or the AJC blogs. (It still amazes me how liberal pundits are bling the the torrent of hate speech coming from the left.)
Second, Hillary and Teresa were very outspoken and have recieved their own share of criticism from liberals for their shrillness. It certainly isn’t just those mean old conservatives who have a problem with these two women.
Michelle Obama is very outspoken and makes very strong criticisms of those who don’t share her views. To say that it is unfair to criticize her is absurd and even the Obama PR team at MSNBC has admitted that.
If he wasn’t such a partisan, Bookman might comment on the liberal hate speech that appears on this board every single day. But he is such a partisan, and consequentially he doesn’t really care about the morality involved, he just wants an excuse to attack the same people that he predictably attacks every single day.

As soon as Obama became the apparent Democratic nominee, the right wing nuts started filling the internet with e mails attacking Michelle.
I received one this morning attacking her for a paper he claimed she wrote about race relations in 1985 while she was at Princeton University. He claimed that she favored black supremacy, hated all whites, and would be a grave threat to US international relations if she becomes first lady.
It seems to me that if she graduated from Princeton University with grades good enough to get into and graduate from Harvard Law School, she is probably a hell of a lot smarter than the illiterate, ignorant right wing nuts who demonstrate their stupidity on the internet.

Sorry Slick, as long as we have affimative action, no one should be impressed with anyone who benefits from this outdated practice. Now that Obama has reached the top of the the political ladder this should say once and for all, loud and clear, anyone can do anything now…ON THEIR OWN. This should do away with race baited quotas and affirmative action based on anything other than income. To do so would simply admit to genetic inferiority. Right? Until afirmative action is unlawful other than for income only, we’ll always be suspect of those that benefited from such a limited practice. When my son was admitted to Duke University, his admittance was determined byy his grades and grades only. He couldn’t extend his hand and ask to be admitted based on the tone of his skin color.

Why is the truth gotta be a chip on my shoulder. Speaking of perks double standard, quotas that you guys get I will also be like McCain over botoxed Stepford wife. I will be loving myself some U.S. of A to death also.

Jay, of all the idiots in all the idiot villages, you my friend, stand alone. Not conveying a convincing point of view, just stirring the pot for the sake of stirring the pot. Got nothing else to write about? How about Obama’s plan for wealth redistribution? Take my money and give it someone else who hasn’t made good decisions and now cries foul? Ever think to write something like that?

To Copyleft, a “traditional support role” is when the candiates wife says things like, “George, would be good for our children” or “if my husband is elected, literacy would be my most important project.” These are the sort of apolitical comments that one expects from a prospective First Lady and they draw no fire from the opposition. However, when a brazen hussy steps into the arena to say that she is proud of this great nation for the first time in her life or to pick up the mantle of “shot-caller” on the policy side, she should not expect to bat her eyes and call off the dogs. At least with Hillary, she had cojones.

The “conservative women” posting here remind me that of course many men are filled with rage against women, having been raised by the kind of ugly harpies and shrews that put their own hatreds and fears even ahead of the welfare of their children.
No wonder so many men hate women, having been whelped by such monsters…

If I were Political Woman’s husband, it wouldn’t be Listerine I’d be drinking, it would be Drano.
Poor man.

Michelle Obama obviously hates her country because of all the negative comments she’s made. She’ll be an easy target for Repubilcans because she is to stupid to keep her mouth shut. Hillary on the other hand has criminal ties. She deserved to be hammered for all the corrupt activity she did. Of course libs like you Jay don’t see anything wrong with hanging with terrorists and going to raciest church. To me she’s just as much guilty as her husband. Barrack Hussein Obama…

Joe at 6:36, you are borderline illiterate. On top of that, you are one of those 25 percenters who think Bush, the worst president in the history of the USA, is doing a great job. With these two strikes against you, how can anybody take anything you write seriously?
Some right-wingers, like the ones who populate this forum, attack candidates wives because they lack critical thinking skills, and merely parrot what they hear on radio, tv or the internet, no matter how ludicrous or absurd it is. The originators of the hatred instigate it because they know their listeners will gobble it up and crap it back out everywhere they can, unquestioningly. This is often called the right wing noise machine. Its purpose is the cause a clamor over nothing to distract people from noticing how corrupt and incompetent the Republicans are, or how harmful their policies are to the nation.

Crafty, Joe, and the rest of you GOP’s, FOX NEWS ALERT Most bigoted, sexist, and illiterate men actually consider themselves to be rather main stream. They just don’t get why a reverence to a woman’s backside just might show their ignorance and sexism. Next FOX NEWS ALERT** They never will either. As to the comment on an Ivy league education not necessarily meaning you are intelligent, well The Shrub shows you may be right on that point.
