Beating Georgia better than trip to Tampa
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Athens — The team that was No. 1 in the USA as the football season began is no longer No. 1 even in the state of Georgia. The classic old series between Georgia Tech and Georgia that was writhing on its deathbed is alive and kicking again. This is all further proof that when playing a Paul Johnson team, it’s never over till it’s over, for the second half is his.
What should amaze you even more is this: One of the teams passed for 407 yards, the other passed for 19. The team that passed for 407 yards lost.
One team’s defensive coordinator’s game plan allowed the other team to score 42 points. He’ll be hailed for his genius. The other team’s defensive coordinator exercised a plan that allowed 45 points. His feet were already to the fire, and now the heat will be turned up. That’s the difference three points can make.
All of this is based on the fact that Georgia Tech came to Athens a seven-point underdog and turned a somber, drizzly afternoon into another star in Paul Johnson’s crown. He came here with another team eight years ago and took a whacking, but working out of Georgia Southern, he was only an appetizer on mighty Georgia’s menu. This time he came with the same old offense but another level of troops, and Athens went to bed Saturday night wondering what had struck town.
It ranks as the most unusual Georgia-Georgia Tech game I have watched, and this was my 58th. That 19-yard pass that Josh Nesbitt completed to Demaryius Thomas never figured in the scoring, even more believe-it-or-not, it was Georgia Tech’s first play of the game. Georgia had whisked down the field from the kickoff, into the Tech end zone on the ninth play, Matthew Stafford’s pass to Tripp Chandler, for a 7-0 lead. It should be pointed out that Tech did score on a pass, but it was one of Stafford’s. From his own 12-yard line, the Georgia quarterback aimed a pass at a receiver who wasn’t there, but Morgan Burnett was, and the Tech defensive back raced 35 yards for a touchdown with the stolen ball. Tech attempted only five more passes, only one of those completed — to a Bulldog.
Even favored as the Bulldogs were, it was generally assumed that the dismal weather had played into their hands as well. Johnson’s triple offense — or wishbone, or whatever you choose to call it — involves much ball juggling. Handing off, pitching out, fakes and such, all of which would appear to endanger Tech’s offensive style. Strangely, Tech never lost the ball by a fumble. Only Georgia did.
A fumble did figure into Tech’s pursuits early in the game, a fumbled snap on the extra point following its first touchdown. That created a hitch in its offensive pursuit, trying to make up for the deficit. But in the long run, after the half, Tech made up for it and more, and thus the score, 45-42.
The Jackets won’t be playing for a the championship in the ACC, however. News drifted in from Blacksburg that Virginia Tech had beaten Virginia, and thus no playoff for Tech. But, if you had to choose, would you take an ACC championship playoff or victory over Georgia? As an unauthorized spokesman for the denizens of The Flats, I’d say the majority would vote for victory over Georgia — especially after seven losses in a row.

I’ll take a victory over u[sic]ga instead of the ACC crown this year to break the drought.
And what has happened to the “mighty sec”??? I believe the ACC is up 5-3 on the sec this year!!! …correct me if I am wrong.

Yes, indeed, the ACC can wait. But Tech did tie for the Coastal division, with Virgina Tech holding the tiebreaker, so it adds up to the finest regular season for Tech in this century.

ACC vs. SEC head to head: 5-3 in favor of ACC.
I did not enjoy watching the first half very much, but after a little retrospect………I really like the fact that UGA was way ahead, because the players and fans became over-confident. Many of the UGA fans were too cocky and over-confident and then the true GT style of football brought a little reality into their lives!
GT tried to throw the ball deep (on obvious passing downs) and was faking the blitz WAY TOO MUCH in the first half. I am SO GLAD we got back to what we have been successful with this year!

Of course, I’d rather have a whole loaf; but if I have to take half, with beating UGA on one end and winning the ACC on the other, I’d rather beat UGA.
Otherwise, we’d hear about how UGA is the ACC champ. Yes, the ACC can wait. We’ll go into a bowl red-hot and maybe get CPJ a 10-win season his first time (maybe even break into the top 10!), and still have plenty of unfinished business to continue to work for.
Meanwhile, the ACC is 5-4 against the SEC this year (assuming FL beats FSU), and could have TEN teams going to bowls, if everyone eligible gets an invite (all but Duke and UVA). Go Deacs!
Navy and GSEagle fans: You’re always welcome on The Flats.

Dan Rada-moron will still be trying to woo the pencil-necked liberal white-wine crown from Midtown, who wouldn’t know a football from a pedicure … and Johnson will see the Tech tower in his rearview mirror on his way to Notre Dame.

I tip my cap to the Jackets this year..it took ya long enough after all these years. But I keep reading all this “beating Georgia is better than going to the ACC Championship”. Big, Fat Hunk of Nerdy BS right there. Yes, beating the Dawgs for the Jackets is big for them. But there is no way you can tell me that it is bigger than going to the ACC title game. No way. You may have beat Georgia, and you are all on a huge high from the win, so that is why you are saying it’s “OK” you don’t get to play for the ACC title. That is a bunch of crap. You know you wanted to play for the title. But no, you didn’t, so your excuse is that beating Georgia is “better” than the ACC title game? What kinda crap is that? How is beating Georgia better than winning your conference championship? There is no logic behind that at all.
A great season for Tech and no ACC title game? What a heartbreaker. If Tech had the chance to play in the ACC title game, and they won the game, there’s no way they’d say that beating Georgia is better than an ACC championship. So saying it’s “better” than the ACC title game is load of horse crap. Anything short of a CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP, even a season that includes beating Georgia, may be a “decent” or even a “good” season, but is far from a great one. If you don’t win the Conference Championship, who cares?

To all you UGA fans who belittle GT fans and our empty seats at Bobby Dodd, what do you have to say for yourselves after your lowsy show of support today in Athens? I was there and I saw just as many empty seats as I’ve seen at Tech games, and ZERO EMOTION from the fans that were there. The only time you’re “SEC crowd” got into it was after the last UGA touchdown. Your home crowd was weak at best, even considering the countless honors and recognition handed out to Dooley, Munson, and 2 biomolecular geeks.(and you call us nerds) Seriously, I thought they were gonna break out Herschel or one of his personalities in the 2nd half. You beat the “in honor of” horse to death, and still came out with an L. So before you go pointing fingers about our “Joke by the Coke”, you need to assess your own situation first. Maybe you just expected to win since you all think you’re entitled to a National Championship. Today you were crowned National Chumps and the state championship now resides at Bobby Dodd. And oh yeah, there’s a new sheriff in town named Paul Johnson. He’s 1-0 against the Dawgs and that mighty SEC is 4-6 against the “inferior” ACC. Chew on that mutts!!

Actually, as I type, Wake is leading vandy, 17-10, and if that score holds up, the ACC will be 6-4 against the mighty SEC. And 6-1 against any SEC teams not named Florida or Alabama.
Further, the SEC will drop to 6-9 against BCS teams with their 1-3 showing against the ACC this weekend. The ACC improves to 15-8 against BCS opponents. Anyone out there still think the SEC is all that this year????

Sweet memories! I could not believe we’d win, with Stafford connecting with his receivers for 20 yards, about any time he wanted to! When we closed to 28-20, I was like, “Well, they’ll march right back down the field, score, and we’ll be right back were we were.” Little did I know that those first seven points in the second half were the start of 26, unanswered by Georgia. Amazing! BRING ON THE BOWL GAME! GO JACKETS!

Mr. Bisher, a friend from church (dawg fan) invited me to the game today and I was surpirsed to be sitting across the aisle from Larry Munson. I had the chance to tell him that we Tech fans salute him as well.
He, like you, know what a rivalry this has been over the years and unlike too many Walmart alumni of UGA always respected both programs. Today we showed the youngster what a truly great series this has been and will be again. I hope we both come into next years’ game undefeated and playing for a National Championship.

Needless to say, as a Tech fan, I am just elated: Huge wins this season over FSU, UM, and UGA. Over 300 yds rushing in each of those games I think. Dwyer needs to be ACC mvp. It’s hard to imagine how you can only pass 3 or 4 times a game and still totally befuddle a defense that knows you are going to run the ball at them. Great job jackets! Mr Bisher: As usual, you SO…OOOO get it. Playing for an ACC championship is so mucho insignificant when compared to beating UGA. The game in Tampa is so irrelevant. The dawgs were focused earlier this year on playing in Atlanta and forgot what was important. The two greatest insults of the past 7 years have been losing to a really mediocre UGA squad and being punished by having to play in the far west bowls.

The biggest mistake I made was not leaving Tech for Texas when I had the chance. I advised Bill Curry to leave Tech for Alabama. I would advise Paul Johnson to take the Notre Dame job when offered. More people were probably watching the game on Saturday, than will watch the ACC championship. I also doubt Georgia would trade the game for an SEC Championship game. A perspective to think about.
Good analogy about Defensive coaches. I do however, think the game plan was solid, the players couldn’t execute at crucial times. Tech seemed to be running downhill the whole second half. The Defensive interior played pretty well. It was certainly no beatdown. Just good football game Tech won fair and square. However, claiming some sort of dominance or superiority is ridiculous.
In the “Hated” SEC Georgia plays these sort of games week in and week out. I’m sorry it’s a fact. LSU, Auburn, Florida, Alabama, UT field this caliber of Atheletes every year. Georgia is in a Brawl every Saturday. If you don’t think so you’re out of your mind (or league). Good game Tech won for sure. Will they ever dominate the team from Athens? No way in hell.

I think it’s just amazing that Paul Johnson came in as a first year coach and with a team he didn’t recruit and wasn’t designed for his system went to the Dawg’s field and played a team of much higher recruited players and won. It’s a testament to the hard work and dedication of both the players and PJ. I believe they could have challenged for the ACC title if they had been more comfortable with the system early in year. Nevertheless, what a great season for GT and such promise for the future!

Tech fans like Larry Munson? Are you mad?! Suppose you clapped when Vince Dooley was honored?! You are not a true GT fan. Winning the game was so much sweeter seeing Vince there getting honored. I loathe him and UGA. Throw Munson in there too. We are GT! We do not like anything UGA….got it!!??

You know how awesome yesterday was? I am a bartender on the weekends, and I actually had my whole bar full of UGA fans congratulating me on the win (like I did anything) and buying me drinks when I got off. Yes, a Bulldog buying your drinks after a Tech win is almost the best feeling there is. I recommend trying it some time.

I could watch the highlight of Dwyer second TD, when he cut right, literally leaving Ramarcus Brown on has arse over, and over, and over…
Still….truly some of the worst division one tackling we’ll ever see (both teams). I hope next years game is more about execution than sloppy Defense. So if we win our bowl game (against LSU?) and go 3-0 against the SEC, will the dawg fans quit whining that we’d go 6-5 with their schedule? Frankly, I think we’d do even better than 9-3 if we traded schedules…

Tech dominates UGA in academics, in $$ made by our alums, in achievements by our alums, yet mutts give us no credit for all of that unless we beat them in football. Well, we’re back to doing just that. Time for them to crawl back to the trailer (I can say this, growing up in one) and open another beer. I may have grown up in a trailer, but I didn’t STAY there. That’s the difference between mutts & Jackets.

After thinking this over, I think a win in Athens was bigger than winning the ACC. Of course I would rather have won both. First there is the drought. Then there is the win against a very good UGA team after a win against a very hot Miami team. Momentum is on our side headed into bowl season. We will head to a good bowl, probably Chick-fil-a. We have time to heal. We end the year against a ranked opponent and assuming the momentum continues, end up ranked in the top 15 if not top 10. Not bad for a first year program. UGA, it was our year. You have one hell of a team. I have tremendous respect for Stafford and his passing ability. Massaquoi is an incredible receiver. Go win big against Ohio State so I can talk smack with my OSU co-worker. Furman, you are the class of the sports writers. I have enjoyed reading your columns since I was in my teens (40 years) and once remember “Beating Bisher” with my picks.

AL…you are living on bygone glories with all that garbage about the SEC being so tough. This year, the SEC is 6-9 against other BCS teams. The ACC is 15-8. And, in head to head matchups, the ACC holds a 6-4 advantage over the SEC. In fact, against anyone not named Florida or Alabama, the ACC is 6-1 against the rest of the SEC, and that record was compiled without either of our 2 ACC division winners playing the SEC.
UGa would have been a 7-5 team in the ACC at best.
Their offense, with Moreno, Stafford, and Massaquoi, is extremely impressive though.

Al,
You really can’t hide dumb. Keep talking up the SEC and “the caliber” of teams UGA plays. The rest of the free world doesn’t live in a cave like you, and realizes that the ACC-SEC head to head is 6-4. And 2 of the 4 ACC losses were to Florida(Miami and Florida State)- who is arguably the best team in the country. Outside of Florida and Alabama, the SEC is soft as baby doo. And you sir, are a complete bumbling idiot. And I was at the game yesterday and would agree that your fans weren’t as good as everyone in the Bulldog nation would like to believe. They honored everyone they could think of- I’m surprised they didn’t bring out Buck Belue and Lindsay Scott to re-enact the play!!

You were correct to write about Tech, and what they accomplished, for the story here is theirs and not any of Georgia’s shortcomings. Most of the Flats faithful could not have dreamed for this season, and more than a few national writers have taken note of the job Johnson has accomplished here. To watch Florida is to marvel at the various talents at work. To watch Oklahoma is to be stunned by a machine at work. Simply put, GT has become one of the most entertaining teams in the country to watch. Given the lack of players recruited for this type of system (or returning on defense), given the number of fumbles and how inept they looked in the Spring game, it is truly remarkable what this group has accomplished. I hope you or Mark will see fit to research and write about how this young group “bought in” to what the new staff wanted to do, and how the coaching staff worked with and brought them along. Sure, there were disappointing games (and Tech fans will always maintain we lost to VT on one ref’s bad call), but the end result has been how this group of young men hung in, grew together, and became a team to watch. Oh…and wouldn’t you love to know what was said in the GT locker room at halftime! This team brought it home for their fans-kudos to them!

It was DEJA VU! The first UGA-GT game I ever attended over 30 years ago in Athens was in a driving rainstorm, with GT running a triple option, completing one pass, Tech with a first year coach(Pepper), and the UGA stands empty at the end! Three thoughts on this season. First, UGA’s defense is typical of all these highly-recruited, over-hyped, 4 and 5 star high school phenoms. They are over-sized and undisciplined and when you pound them for the entire game they will give up and break! When all you want to do every week is rush the passer in one back spread offenses it is no fun to play against this moster! Second, this win will be the key to many years of recruiting success in the state of Georgia. Coach was hired to beat UGA and recruit in-state, well have you seen the commitments list? This offense is a linemen’s dream and they are flocking to the flats along with the smart running backs that know that sharing the load means fewer injuries and more success! Finally, maybe next year we will not be subjected to all this pre-season SEC hype! Florida, Alabama, UGA, and Mississippi are legitimate but the rest are a joke with South Carolina and LSU barely qualifying for a bowl! Boise State would finish third or fourth in the SEC! Line up and play the games and sort it out at the end!

Could someone please write an article about the resurgence of the spread option?
Look around. All the “Wild (Insert name)” formations are just a variation on the spread option. The dolphins used to defeat the patriots in NFL even.
Look across the country from Tebow to McCoy; from Big East to Pac-10. Variants of the option are proving successful regardless of base system or conference. It is being run from the spread, pro-style, and the I based attacks.
Georgia Tech depends on it more than most, and runs a currently unique base set, but look around and see the option elsewhere. The Falcons even use it some.
I believe GT is ahead of the new trend in option revival!

I am very proud of the Yellow Jackets, you played a great game for 60 minutes. You never gave up, even though I did at the half, I apologize. However, I never lost sight and faith that you could pull it out. This game means more to me than ever this year. My dad has been a Ga Tech fan for life and so have I. This year, this game is more special than any other game. My mom has some serious medical conditions and my dad is facing the possibility of heart surgergy. They were to take a very special 50th wedding anniversary 12/14 of this year, all that is to the side. Watching our Yellow Jackets in the 1st half I could see the let down in my dads face, but he never gave up. He has been through a lot this year with his heart and my moms memory slipping away. Knowing they are not going to be able to get away for their 50th wedding anniversary I did not know what to do for him. Spending time with him during the Ga Tech game was very special. I want to thank you Ga Tech for not giving up. Also, thank you UGA for the sportsmanship you showed after the game. You see, you never know how people watch the game. Yes, we love Ga Tech and for Ga Tech to give us a win on UGA, thank you. Thank you for putting a smile not only my face, but my dad and moms face as well. Thank you for not giving up just as we will not give up on what we are facing. Thank you Ga Tech, I hope the team and coachs get a chance to read this as well. Way to Go Ga Tech. Tradition, this win is better and more special for different reasons. GO GA TECH!

I think I would chosen a chance to play in the ACC game in Tampa….but, I am biased because I live in Tampa and wanted my alma mater to come to town. And a chance to play in the Orange bowl would have also have been great.
But, with that said….. oh how sweet the victory over Georgia was. And now we can begin the streak to 8 wins.
On another note… .I think we should only recruit players that have a last name of “Johnson”. Calvin Johnson was great, Michael Johnson can really play, and Paul Johnson is a great coach.

Sure, we should should have won and if the officals would have made the right call and had we not made 1 bad mistake, we would be there. Yes, the best team in the ACC will not be playing next week. However, that is okay. We were only suppose to win 4 games this year and look at us. So, I will take this record, wins on FSU, Miami, Clemson and UGA over the ACC championship any day. WE accomplished step one this year. So go back you your little Va towns and do whatever you do. At least the UGA fans have more class than the VA Tech fans and players. GO TECH!

Not a surprised spectator.. We at Georgia Southern always knew that PJ could take his offense anywhere and be successful with the right personnel to run it. One of the saddest days in my football days was to see Paul leave GSU. I have followed his career since then and will always support PJ regardless of his record or where he coaches.. He is a great coach. My only wish is that he would have stayed at GSU and moved it to a I-A program.

Hey, Where’s ACC Stinks, a trashtalker who has been denigrating our conference on here for weeks? I just checked out the latest Sagarin rankings and the ACC has 8 teams in the top 32. (For you math cjalenged mutts, that’s 25%.) SEC as 4 teams in top 32. ACC has all 12 teams in the top 51. SEC has 6. ACC beat your conference head to head all year and if you take away 3 wins by Fla and Ala against ACC teams, the head to head would be an arse kicking in favor of the ACC. And by the way, if GT had played Ugay’s schedule, we’d be 10-2. The Sagarins show UGA was 0-3 against top 30 teams while GT was 4-2. As for those GA fans who don’t understand how beating GA yesterday was bigger than going to the ACC C’ship game, look me up in 2015 when you are trying to beat Tech after losing 7 in a row. Then you’ll know how it feels. This is as swet as it gets and makes THWG all the better.

As a Georgia graduate, I have been increasingly embarrassed by the behavior of Richt and his players. I really can’t figure Richt out. Arthur Blank spent a huge amount of money coddling thugs and criminals. When he got rid of them, things got better. I think that the turning point in Richt’s career at UGA was when he ordered his team to dance in the end zone against UF. That unsportsmanlike act, and the violent, criminal behavior of his players, contradicts his public persona and exposes Richt as just another dirty coach. He has made Georgia the poster child for all that is bad in college sports. I wait for the day when Richt and his sponsor, Adams, give us back the University. Until that time, Georgia fans can look for more disappointing losses—particularly to Florida and Tech.

If I had to choose between winning against UGA or going to the ACC Championship this year, I would have chosen beating the Dawgs. It was the #1 goal of the TECH team this year to end the seven-game winning streak. They accomplished that goal.
In the meantime, UGA accomplished NONE of their preseason goals. NO National Championship, NO SEC Championship, No eight-game winning streak over Tech. Having this streak end during the year that DAWG Nation had dreams of another National Championship dancing in their heads makes the win even sweeter!
And if you haven’t noticed yet VT fans, your team may be going to the ACC Championship game, but they ARE NOT EVEN RANKED!!!!! The BEST TECH team, the one that is 15th-ranked in the AP and 16th in the Coaches’ Poll, is GEORGIA TECH! Your team is in the “Others Receving Votes” Section in both polls. The other team going to the ACC Championship game is Boston College, a team who TECH beat and is also ranked lower in both polls than GEORGIA TECH. Even a win in the ACC Championship game will probably not get you ranked higher than the REAL TECH!
And for all you DAWG fans: TECH is now ranked above UGA in both polls! You never expected that to happen this year, did you?

Paul Johnson got it. Chan never did. Chan put emphasis on the ACC schedule over the Georgia game. There is only one game on the Tech schedule and it’s at the end of the year. The rest are scrimmages to prepare us for the only game that matters. We certainly want to win all of ‘em, but if we lose ‘em all and then beat the Dawgs we have had a winning year. Had Auburn found a way to beat Alabama yesterday, the War Eagles would have had a good year. The in-state rival game should mean the most. Watch tapes of the old Vince Dooley show. At the end of his show after the Auburn/UGA game he always ended it by saying “See you next week after the biggest game of all.” Well that game was the Ga Tech game, no matter what the records of either team was. Coach Dooley got it. Paul Johnson gets it. Richt will learn it. Go ahead and jump up and down with a stupid smile on your arrogant face before the game Richt…maybe you get it now. So all of you VT and UGA fans who don’t understand or believe that beating our rival is more important than any conference championship…We don’t care if you believe or not, because for now we have a coach and a team that knows what’s truly important for a winning season. Current UGA fans and players put the emphasis on beating Florida, Tennessee and South Carolina…great, I love it. Coach Dooley was right, and Paul Johnson knows it too.
Go Jackets! Thanks for the win.

Fellow Tech fans, I am very happy with the win that we posted yesterday - great comeback win on UGA’s home field!!! That being stated, I think all of this trash talk and giddiness is unnecessary since I expected Tech to come out on top of this one even when we were down after the 1st half. Think about it - UGA has no run defense at all and they are a very poorly coached team so all of that talent that they have is all for naught (a la Notre Dame) in that regard. We did nothing special except put a halt to the GT losing streak in this series. From now on I think all of the attention needs to be directed at how Tech allowed such an atrocious air assault on our vaunted defense. Think about it. No other team has even sniffed 42 points against us all year. That needs to be fixed right away! If the pass defense is not corrected then I don’t think we’ll be happy with the bowl game since our opponent will closely study our pathetic inability to stop the puppies when they went to the air. Also, factor out two turnovers and we would have lost!! Just trying to keep it all in perspective. GO JACKETS!!!!

Yeah, I hate them too but your team BARELY got by them and both of us whipped them like a red-headed step child. So don’t try to throw off on the SEC because deep down you know - you know - that Bama, UF or even LSU and Ole Miss could clean your GT insect clock any day of the week. I think you’re a punk, rectum boy. I hope your homosexual hero (Paul Johnson) has enough ballz to put a real SEC team on your schedule. Until then, STFU about the SEC, rectum girl. No NC for the ACC - no ma’am. It’s all SEC for many years to come and you know it, punk.

Great comeback win, but I must admit my bird learned some choice and not repeatable words every time UGA got the ball and threw those screens and flat passes for 15-20 yrds. I knew that the Dawgs would pull out another end of game win (all too often related to a questionable interference call). But the Jackets hung in there. I do, however, agree with GT1979 that we had better improve our pass defense before we think “big time”. That was scary. They cut through us like a warm knife on warm butter. But we have some young guys back there and appear to be bringing in some good ones. So I will keep the faith.
Will the Dawgs got get Sly Croom for defensive coordinator? They could do worse.

Yes the SEC is stronger than the ACC. The cellar team Duke, beat Vandy. LSU had a terrible year as did Tennesee, Auburn and Miss State. SEC strong? Pre-season #1 beaten by Georgia Tech who had over 400 yards rushing. They did it ALL on the ground. Yes it was stormy in Athens as they felt the sting of death from a swarm of Yellow Jackets. How do you like our flip and fly offense now you big mouth slobs! And don’t tell us what you did the last seven years, last year oor last week. Yesterday Tech ran the ball down your throat and you choked!

Bowl Game committee selects UGA Despite a dismal loss in the rain to the Yellow Jackets, the season is not over for the Dawgs; as UGA has accepted a bid to play in the inaugural Tucks Medicated Hemorrhoidal Wipes Bowl. The game site has not been chosen, but two likely locations are Parkview High school and Bay Springs Middle school. The game will be shown on a post game basis on ESPN-9, after the Division III championship game; which will be shown live.

This year - the ACC is 6 and 4 against the SEC, and 5 and 1 outside of the first 2 weeks of the season. Average SEC record of these SEC teams: 5-3 Average ACC record of these ACC teams: 4-4 The decent from the ACC defeated the good from the SEC, on the whole (with exceptions being UF and Alabama - I must’ve missed UGA’s wins against them…) Pre-season # 1 GA has significantly fewer quality wins the Tech. Beyond all that, we beat UGA @ UGA in “Georgia’s year”. I hope Moreno and Stafford join Massaquoi in leaving for the pro’s, because our freshmen and sophomore QBs and RBs will enjoy a career full of this.

Terry Bowden went undefeated with players he inherited at Auburn - everything went down hill in rapid fashion after that. The same will hold true for PJ at Tech. Quarterbacks want to throw the ball - Nesbitt probably wouldn’t even consider Tech had he known he would end up being just another running back. You earned the win yesterday but not really the right to brag about anything! Enjoy this streak of one because that’s all it will be!!

By Me Again, you were bold enough to say that Nesbitt “probably wouldn’t even consider Tech had he known he would end up being just another running back.”
It’s a bit risky to speculate what somebody would or wouldn’t do. What Nesbitt DID say, as reported in 11/30 AJC, was this: “Beating Georgia, he said with a grin, ‘is what I came here for.’”

GT1979, You are correct about our defense. Stafford ate us up on any down that we failed to blitz. He’s like Peyton Manning, if you leave him untouched in the pocket, he’ll tear you up. Especially since he has Massaquoi to scoop up anything thrown within 5 yards of him. Beating UGA is more important than anything else.
Our D did a GREAT job not allowing any yards after the catch. Our offense made great decisions and future NFL hall of famer J. Dweyer ran like he meant it. UGA has a good team, the SEC is a good conference and that makes a GT WIN all that much better. Beating UGA is more important than anything else. The NCAA can’t even decide who is the best team in the Big 12 South; bowl games and “National Championships” are summaries of a bunch of opinions. Beating UGA is more important than anything else. Beating UGA is more important than anything else.

Y’know, oledawg makes a good point. Whether it be Notre Dame or another school, I suspect that there will be very much interest in Paul Johnson over the next few years. Although Tech’s football history is grand, it’s most recent past is not exactly spectacular. I hope Dan will put together a package that will at least make it very difficult for CPJ to leave, and for him to do that, the rest of us must show our support. It’s not enough to make comments on the AJC blog, we need to fill the stands … for EVERY GAME! I attended every home game except one this year, and I can testify that there were plenty of empty seats available. Let’s support the team and the coaches, not only with our opinions, but with our presence!
Great game against the Dogs. Great to see that the ACC, the so-called “weak” conference, finished the regular season as the strongest overall conference in the country, while the “superior” SEC was ranked THIRD!

Congrats to Tech. The team that played the best won. My beloved Dogs committed two turnovers that led directly to 14 Tech points. Tech to their credit did not turn the ball over at all. Turnovers will kill you in football and with a 45-42 score, I think that was the difference.
I have been following the Dogs for 40+ years and never thought a Dog team that scored 42 points would lose a game. I don’t think either of our defenses were anything to get excited about. However with the exception of the final score, it was one of the most exciting UGA-Tech games in many years.
I hope some of you bloggers get your ugly hate under control. I would hate to see this rivalry game discontinued because a handful of fans on both sides cause it to spin out of control. It has happened with Alabama-Auburn and a lot of other natural geographic rivalries. Please don’t cause it here.
It is evident though that Furman Bisher still has his framed picture of Bobby Dodd on his night table next to his bed so it is the last thing he sees at night.
So Tech, enjoy your win and we will see you next year.

Tech as a football program is rising - the future looks bright, and an ACC championship is a very reasonable and attainable goal for next year.
Georgia fans will be on pins and needles hoping Stafford and Moreno come back next year. UGA’s a really good football program, but they can’t seem to do better than 2 or 3 losses per season.
Right now I’d much rather be a Tech fan, and glad that I am. So great to see both Tech and the Falcons win this year - lots to look forward to with both teams!!

So after seven long years it finally happened. Please don’t ever say anything about the “lack of class” that GA players have … seeing the pictures of Tech players with hedges in their teeth, that really shows a lot of class. Maybe with the money that Tech makes on their big Bowl game can be used for the replacement of the hedges. That would be a hoot! When is the parade? Do you get rings this year? You won a football game, not the Super Bowl. Try to have a little class and act like you have been their before.

I love all the UGAg trolls spewing their wishful thinking that CPJ will be at ND next year. Guess what, GT wasn’t the first school that came knocking while he was at Navy. There was something about Tech that made him leave. Secondly, after being able to do so much in his first season, he’s well on his way to getting the National Championships he believes he can win at GT. Yes, plural. CPJ is a proven winner and hates losing more than anything. He cares not for money, just winning. GT is already paying him a comfortable living and we have an AD / fan base that won’t come with the pitchforks after 9 win seasons. Finally, with his time at GSU, he has already built up a network of recruiting channels in the state - something that takes time to do. In short, keep smoking the crack because he ain’t leaving.

Jason, you asked, “How is beating Georgia better than winning your conference championship?” You have to be a true Yellow Jacket to understand the frustrations of SEVEN long years without a win against UGA. When it has been this long, beating Georgia becomes you entire focus, almost your primary purpose of of life! You eat, breathe, sleep, dream of “BEATING GEORGIA”!!!! Everything else, including the Conference Championship pales in comparison. If you are a true Georgia fan, then in seven more years, you will be in a position to better understand what we’re talking about. MISSION ACCOMPLISHED! Been hearing the same crap for years from Tech fans. Ceck the series record over the past 30+ years. Nothing is going to change. Hey CPJ and GT fans, UGA isn’t going to roll over. Next season when we have our 18 players back who were lost with injuries, we will be a lot tougher. We will roll over your D like a steamroller over an ant, and our D will be much improved. Yep, you will be tougher competition under CPJ, but we will continue to own you in football. Would have won this year if not for the fumble on the kickoff! Richard Samuel will make you pay in 2009. To those of you morons who think UGA is all of a sudden going to collapse and lose out on all the top-rated recruits because of one loss to Tech (one which we gift-wrapped and handed to you with our turnovers), you are sadly mistaken. There is absolutely no damage done other than a single-game loss. No recruits have changed their minds. Think about it, 4 wins and 14 losses since 1990? That is pretty pitiful. UGA only loses a small number of contributing seniors, and we get back all those players lost with injuries. Stafford will be back in 2009. We will see you at Grant Field where we have only lost once since 1990. Prepare for a Bulldog revenge fest!

Rest assured GT fans, the triple option is not the offense to lead to perpetual success in Div 1A College Football.
One win does not a rivalry make. Georgia is still far above GT in talent, and is considered a NC contender year-in-and-year-out….something GT will never be able to claim.

To: Chuck uga, OMD, and all you other sorry, whimpy puppy dogs…..
The only NC title you boyz from Athens will ever contend for is “no comprehende”.
After your “games” against Bama, Gators, and Tech this year, its Richt who will be sneaking out of town for South Bend soon enough….that is if you can find enough politicians in the Capital who couldn’t hold a real job but will use the taxpayer’s money for a UGA buyout.
Your recruiting base needs to start from the slammer, because thats where most of your team’s absentees end up.
Keep swilling your beer and driving your pickups over the speed limit….and, please, please….find a way to live weekend to weekend when your team is NOT winning. :=)

To all you DOG fans saying that GT can’t contend for National Championships and that’s all UGA does:
College Football recognizes ONE (1) National Championship for UGA. UGA claims two more, but they’re the only ones who do.
College Football recognizes FOUR (4) National Championships for GT. We don’t need to claim any more.
UGA has not contended for a National Championship since 1980 - GT won one in 1990.
Any questions?

Would you please explain to me how Paul Johnson is not a finalist for Coach of the Year? It is absolutely atrocious, bewildering, and outrageous that he is not a finalist? I believe all the comments on the voting site and the fact that he was leading vote getter speak for themselves. I know you don’t need to hear them, but I will mention a few things that Coach Paul Johnson did to deserve this award: 1) Completely turned the offense upside down by introducing the Opition Offense, and was extremely successful in his 1st year. 2) Took a team expected to go 3-9 and finish fourth in their division to a 9-3 record and tied for first in the division (realistically should’ve been in a BCS bowl). 3) Produced the ACC Player of the Year 4.) Produced and All-American DE 5.) Did what his predecessor could not do in the 7 years he coached…BEAT GEORGIA. What is a Coach of the Year? To me, the Coach of the Year should be someone who exceeds expectations in their coaching and with their team. Sure, Urban Meyer, Joe Paterno, Mack Brown, Nick Saban, Jim Tressel, and Bob Stoops are good coaches, but they have great teams and were expected to do well. A few of those actually under achieved and didn’t meet expectations. Even Kyle Whittingham and Chris Petersen were expected to do big things, but only met expectations. The coaches of Ball State and Northwestern deserve to be on the list. I’ll even agree with Urban Meyer, Nick Saban, and Bob Stoops. The nation’s best (not near best) teams’ coaches obviously deserve a shot at this title. If getting the most votes by the students, paying customers, and regular followers of college football is not enough to at least earn him a finalist vote, the criteria ought to be reevaluated. Please explain this to me. I sent this same message to the only two emails on the CotY website and both are either conveniently out of office or undeliverable message. Thanks for your time.

When I attended Tech, we beat Georgia all four years I was in school. ACC championship…I could care less. We were in the SEC back then and I still prefer the SEC. A winning season is defined by the Georgia game. Let us win four in a row and see how the Dawgs feel about the game. We always had sellout games in the SEC, not so in the ACC. Who cares about beating North Carolina, Maryland, etc. Not me. Worst mistake Bobby Dodd ever made was leaving the SEC for the ACC. Thanks to Dooley, it was his vote that kept us out of the SEC again. Losing the all except Georgia but beat the Dawgs…the definition of a winning season.
