I’m thankful for many things

There’s nothing like a holiday, and Thanksgiving is extra special, for it’s one that our own country invented. And not only that, but instead of one day, with Thanksgiving we get four. We stuff ourselves on Thursday, then we have three days to work it off.

It can be traced back to the pilgrims and their good friends, the Indians, but nothing official was done about it until Abe Lincoln’s presidency.

In time, the date was jostled around by one president or another, but the heartiness has never diminished. It has come to represent a feasting time. No gifts, no denominational affiliation, no political connection, generally speaking, a day of appreciation for the good life.

In my case, this unofficial expression of thankfulness relates to the birth of my first son. Roger would be 53 now, and though I have lost him, the joy of having him lingers on. He is forever in my heart.

What began as an annual remembrance turned into an occasional touch of humor and a jab at somebody or some thing, so here we go again:

—- I’m thankful I haven’t had to park my car on the front lawn with a “for sale” sign on it —yet.

—- I’m thankful for the cell phone, which I’d sworn I’d never have.

—- I’m thankful for the player who makes a tackle and doesn’t act as if he has never made one before.

—- I’m thankful for “Sounds of Faith,” the Sunday morning program that the former WPCH station had to bring back by popular demand.

—- I’m thankful when the bank statement comes in and I’ve made another mistake — in my favor.

—- I’m thankful when the moon breaks through the night clouds like a great big pumpkin.

—- I’m thankful I made it to 90, but I hadn’t planned on looking 90.

—- I’m thankful aging doesn’t look nearly as bad now as it did when I was 18.

—- I’m thankful for the first sip of a cold beer — about once a month.

—- I’m thankful for the days the Dow Jones goes up, even if my account doesn’t.

—- I’m thankful I got to know Atlanta the way it used to be.

—- I’d be thankful if I could compose an instant answer to the guy in the 18-wheeler up ahead with ‘the sign “How’s my Driving” on the back.

—- I’m thankful I never developed a taste for chicken wings.

—- I’m thankful for 3rd-and 1, and 2nd-and 1, short yardage stuff.

So we close again on another Thanksgiving Day, with best wishes for much happiness. And by the way, have you noticed how many more friends and passersby are saying “Happy Thanksgiving” this year? Somehow, I don’t recall that ever having been as much a seasonal greeting before. Maybe it’s the times, goor nature or the economy. Cheaper to say “Happy Thanksgiving” than mail a card.

I don’t know how or when you lost your Roger but that was a moving reference. I haven’t lived in Georgia since 1972 (I’m 58) but growing up in Norcross and reading yuor Thanksgiving columns were a highlight of the year. I’m thankful you made it to 90 and you’re still a grat writer. Thanks to you and happy Thanksgiving

As one in my 70th year who’s been enjoying your writing since days at Ga Tech in the late ‘50’s, I’m thankful we still have you, Furman, with your masterful way of putting things in perspective. Hoping to still be enjoying your column when you reach 100.

I’m thankful for Furman Bisher and his great articles. I was most fortunate to be a kid when Atlanta had a morning paper and an evening paper with Mr. Bisher, Ed, Jesse, and the old coach Harry. Those were wonderful days the likes we will not be fortunate enough to see again. But we do still have Furman.

I’ve collected all those memories along with you. My first cousin married Roy Hartsfield when he was an Atlanta Cracker and he later became the first manager for the Toronto Blue Jays or as they called them in the early days “Blow Jays.” I’ve been reading you every since and you are the master. Happy Thanksgiving.

I’m thankful for Mr Bisher’s column yesterdays, todays and many tomorrows. He is absolutlely one of the greatest writers of all time. P Brown, B Martin and B Dodd are all in agreement somewhere up above and I know L Hardeman is nodding his head as he cruises around North Georgia. Thank you sir for many warm memories.

One thing I am Thankful for this Thanksgiving is being able to read your sports columns, which I think are sometimes more of a reflection of life than of just sports. I hope you have a great holiday. Thanks.

Furman, you’re the man. Always was … always will be. Jim Pinson and Lewis Grizzard used to regale me with tales about you in the 40s and in the 70s. They’re gone now. You’re not, and that’s something to be thankful for, which I am. Thanks for 50-plus years of great work. I hope Georgia wins Saturday, but I hope it’s a classic for the ages.

Furman, I have personally been reading your columns since way back in the 50;s. Those were the “good old days” and things were very diffirent then, than they are now. What I remember the most about your columns was your humor and knowledge of the game. You would now make a excellent TV sport journalist in your younger years than the “jocks” we listen to now. Thank you for all the memories and I hope you live to enjoy many more years. Please be ready to write about Tech ‘s win over the Dawgs this weekend.

My Dad and Earl Mann were in baseball business together, I met you at Ponce De Leon in late forties at a Atlanta Cracker- Memphis Chick game. You were a beat writer for the Crackers and just starting your LEGENDARY career. Again in 1948, you patted me on the back at the LPGA tournment At Sunset Hills CC, Carrollton Ga, where Babe Zarharies beat the field. Thanks for the nice words in my high school days when I was selected Back of the Year in 1955, and on to the SEC. We last spoke when I was invited to a interview with Loran Smith before Auburn-UGA game in 2001.I was battling cancer and you gave me encouragement… This will be my 59th reading,”I am Thankful for”. Growing up, I waited on my front porch in the afternoon for the paperboy to read the Sports Section, Jesse Outlar, Charlie Roberts, Bob Short and Bob Emmons. Those days have past and memories are you Mr Bisher, as the last and best of Atlanta Journal Constitution have been delivered.

I was fortunate enough to grow up in Atlanta and ride the bus to the Paramount Theater on Saturdays and sell programs at Tech games that included free admission to contests where players went both ways, didn’t dance in the end zone, and would have been humiliated to take themselves out because they were tired. Atlanta was a great place to grow up, and those of us who shared that experience have stayed in touch, although some have moved to other places. I am sad that Mr. Bisher lost a son, and I am most thankful that I haven’t. I am also thankful that Mr. Bisher is still producing great writing.

I’m thankful for one more of your Thanksgiving columns.I grew up in Atlanta and I have a story you will probably enjoy.Back in the early 50’s I was on an elevator at Richs, with my mother, reading my new book The Babe Ruth Story when Ralph McGill got on.He patted me on the head and started telling me things about The Babe and I told him he was wrong and corrected him. This was my mothers all time favorite story. They don’t make em like you and Mr. McGill anymore!

Good grief… are all of you people in your 80s and 90s? This is the most lame article I’ve ever read! Here is what Im thankful about: -That I spent 10 years of my life earning my degrees in molecular biology, biochemistry, and genetics and then the past 12 years practicing only to be let go because of budget cuts and now not getting hired because I am overqualified! -that I finally saved enough money to by a home and now thanks to the economy its no longer an asset but a burden! -that my father is dying in the hospital and my siblings are also out of work and live out of town and because of this wonderful economy we cannot afford to get together this holiday season! -and last but not least that senile writers like Mr. Bisher get paid to write one stupid editorial a month! Enjoy your turkey you a-hole!

Thanks Mr. Bisher from Afghanistan. I never miss a column of yours now that the internet has made it possible. Whe I was a teenager in Atlanta back in the 70’s I used to have a “I Beat Bisher” bumper sticker. I think it was College football predictions. Early in my Military career I had the AJC Sunday edition sent to where ever I was. Just to get the sports page and your column. For years I’ve been forwarding some of your writings to friends and my children who are now grown. I’m thankful for you Mr. Bisher and the fact I got to meet you once. Take care and Happy Thanksgiving!

Greetings from London! Let it be known that Furman Bisher’s Thanksgiving column has an international following. I grew up in Atlanta, but moved away in 1974, and have lived in the UK since 1988. But as a passionate Tech fan in the 1960s and 70s (my Dad taught there) I was a big fan of Mr Bisher as I grew up following the heroics of Billy Lothridge, Billy Martin, Kim King, Lennie Snow, etc.— helped along the way by Mr Bisher’s witty and balanced insight. These memories lie deep and are rarely unearthed. But since the internet has made it possible to do so, Mr Bisher’s column has allowed me to transport myself back through space and time to the Atlanta of my childhood. I see myself as a 10 year old Tech fan again, playing football myself and surrounded by family and old friends. On a Thanksgiving day in London —which can be a bit lonely for an American expat— this is a true gift.

I believe ‘you got to be kidding me’ may have been ‘let go’ for reasons other than the economy..especially if he had to work with other humans. Furman, I’m thankful that we had Outlar, Grizzard, Hudspeth and the like to report to us on Lou Hudson, Larvell (Sugar Bear) Blanks, and Junior Coffey back before the blathering idiocy of sports talk radio. Nice column, as they normally are. Thanks

I don’t know if a lot of you are aware, but if I understand correctly, this is Mr. Bisher’s last year at the AJC, and thus his final Thanksgiving column. I’m 43, and I would imagine I’ve read every one of his Thanksgiving columns since I was 13. When we lived in Atlanta all those years, I’d open the hard copy of the AJC in my lap, or on my kitchen table. Since moving to Beaufort, SC I’ve enjoyed Mr. Bisher’s Thanksgiving column via the Internet. The technology has certainly changed, as has my location, but the heart and conviction this man pours into this column has not. Thank YOU, Mr. Bisher. You will be sorely missed.

Happy Thanksgiving, Furman! I am thankful for many things, and having access to your work all these years has its place on that list for sure. I doubt that I have missed too many of your columns through the years, considering that I’m now 62 and I remember my Dad passing the sports section on to me when I was a teenager. He loved your columns and, during his last few years with us, would look forward to my bring him the paper so that he could get his sport’s “fix”. Dad would have been 90 next year, so I’m sure he is pleased that you have made it to that age and are still blessing us with your work. As for people like “you got to be kidding me”….if you are waiting on a return insult from Bisher, forget it…he’s more than likely praying for you. Happy Thanksgiving, Furman Bisher…think I’ll go find that “I Beat Bisher” t-shirt that is around here somewhere.

Thanks, Furman, for another Thanksgiving treat. When I was a boy growing up in Nashville, GA, it was my lucky chore to go into the front yard to fetch the paper. You are the best. It is now officially Thanksgiving.

Like so many others, as a Atlanta native, I too am thankful for Mr. Bisher, his perspective and his tradition. I am thankful that my native-Atlanta parents introduced me to Furman Bisher’s Thanksgiving Column when I was a teenager back in the 70’s & 80’s. Mr. Bisher it is time for you to retire! Every one of you enjoy your turkey and kiss my a*!

Thanks Mr. Bisher for ALL you do and have done over the many years in Atlanta. If there was a young journalist who wanted to gain inspiration for writing, it should be available to them by looking in the dictionary under ‘inspiration’ and seeing a photo of Furman Bisher beside the word. You are the epitome of journalism. Sadly that trait you possess has been lost on our journalists of today. These posts have brought back so many fond memories of Atlanta ‘back in the day’, and I am thankful, so very thankful I was a part of that growing up in good ol ‘Hotlanta’. I beat Bisher a few times back in the day of ‘I Beat Bisher’ but for the record, NO ONE, and I mean NO ONE will ever beat the class, the wisdom, and the writings of Mr. Furman Bisher. Hope to have you around for many more years. Thanking God now for all the years He has given YOU to us!!! God Bless You!

I’m thankful for the Internet. I grew up in Atlanta and though I’ve moved around I can still read Mr. Bisher’s columns every year. This is at least my third state in which I’ve read them.
