Tech’s worst effort under Paul Johnson

Chapel Hill, N.C. — Kenan Stadium, nestled in a forest of dazzling colors and bathed in an autumn sunshine, is the place you want to watch a college football game. Unless you’re Paul Johnson and you have come back to your home state with your first Georgia Tech team, and the mood turns as blue as the blue in the North Carolina cheering section. You not only lose, but you get trounced, and but for a shocking 85-yard run (by Jonathan Dwyer) in the ruins of, it would have been the first time Tech had been shut out in 141 games.

The Tar Heels scored first and last, and in between, and even when the Yellow Jackets showed some sign of resistance in the first half, there was no charge left in their battery. The final score was 28-7, the bottom line on Johnson’s most depressing day in his first season, the worst defeat and a seemingly improbable performance. On the other hand, consider that this was only the third time the Tar Heels have beaten the Jackets in the past 11 meetings, and the first time Butch Davis has beaten them since he arrived last season.

So much for the agony of Georgia Tech defeat, on to the ecstasy of Tar Heel victory. This was Homecoming Day in Chapel Hill, and for an old warrior who once trod these paths, studied at the feet of learned ones long since gone, it was a weekend fraught with memories. Once upon a time I toted the water and delivered the towels and lived the servile pleasure of being a part of it all. Those were the days when football was less a corporate function, and old Kenan held about 35,000 fully loaded. On this day, almost 60,000 filled these stands, and the hue of blue was overwhelming.

In those collegiate days, campus heroes were Andy Bershak, George Stirnweiss, Jimmy Lalanne. Paul Severin and names long since lost among trees of this forest in which the namesake Kenan financed the root of what has becoming this overwhelming arena. Duke, next door, was the bitter enemy, the Blue Devils. Carolina had a mascot of its own, a ram named Ramses, and the devilish neighbors from Duke came and kidnapped Ramses now and then. And painted his horns the dark shade of Blue Devil blue.

Oh, Ramses was on the grounds on Saturday, another in the long line. He basked in the sunshine, as spoiled as the Georgians spoil their Uga.

This was, of course, Georgia Tech’s worst day in the new regime of Paul Johnson. He is dealing with a higher grade of personnel than he has ever coached before, at Georgia Southern and Navy. But consider how far he has come, from Newland, his mountain hometown, and Western Carolina, where he schooled, many a wagon grease from the Tobacco Triangle. He came up the ladder rung by rung. Butch Davis has practiced his art among the pros along the way. It was a special day here in Chapel Hill, and for one coming home again, there was a mixture of mellowness on the one hand, and the sadness of defeat on the other.

Folks, get used to this for the next 3 years at least. I have been telling my Alumni friends all year that this triple option is not the long term answer. Defense played good enough to win, special teams were horrible, offense operated like it always has-inconsistent. Have the triple option as part of your offensive game, but don’t make it your offensive game at this level of football. I think I will cancel my Thanksgiving plans to fly to GA for the Tech-UGA game, and I’ll just give my tickets to my UGA co-worker who is still crying the blues about the Florida game. If the Kentucky game did not cheer him up, I am sure the Tech game.

What makes this worse is that our Tickle Pile was cancelled. UNC would not let us hold it unless we won.

Same old inconsitent GT - nothing has changed. Chan may be gone, but the story remains the same. GT is nothing more then a poser. How do you win at BC and Clemson and beat FSU yet lose to UVA and UNC? I am really, really curious of that. I’ll never know.

You wonder why the seats don’t fill? Because GT fans and alums have a brain. We aren’t like UGA fans, etc. We aren’t locals that have nothing better to do with our time. We expect to go to games and win. If that isn’t going to happen, why waste our time?

I expect a ton of Un of Miami fans at the game on the 20th and if I were GT, I would cancel the ‘white-out’ as it will be a national TV embarrassment. Haven’t we been embarrassed enough his year already?

Everyone said at the beginning of the year it would take a good 2 or 3 years for the coach to be successful - but then he had to get the team to 7-2 and have us all get our hopes up - only to have them come crashing down with a thud. 3 losses in our division and in last place with Duke - how wonderful. We have lost to every team in our division we have played (I don’t count Duke sorry).

Pls whatever you do - DO NOT accept a bowl bid to that god-awful blue field out West. We have our pride. Decline it and stay home.

Furman - I don’t think I saw the same game you saw. This WAS NOTthe WORST EFFORT under Paul Johnson.

Usually you are lucid. Today you are off the mark…

The effort was there all day long.

This is what happens sometimes when you have a young team that as the AJC noted yesterday is starting 16 FROSH/SOPH.

Their opponent is at home, well-rested and we are coming off a huge emotional win. They (UNC) also happen to be a darn good team.

Keep it in perspective folks.

All you “fair weather fans” who want to jump off the bandwagon (see above postings) just like you did after the UVA game….Get lost. You are not needed.

Paul Johnson is building for the long term.

I’m going to go ahead and predict a win against the Canes.

That will put us at 8 wins.

Did ANYBODY think this would happen in year one…. (crickets…) I didn’t think so.

Again, we’ll here the familiar refrain anytime things go a bit awry… Blame the offense.

Coach Johnson knows what he’s doing and he has 1.75 million reasons a year not to listen to garbage criticism.

Stay behind the team or GO AWAY. Please…

GO JACKETS!!!!!

It would seem to me if the running game is not going anywhere early in a game, then throw a few passes to loosen up the defense. Tech threw one pass in their first 21 plays. It was obvious NC was lined up to stop the run early. I realize Tech had 423 yards of offense, but there are no points given for yardage.

John,

If this team should turn it around and win again this year, or improve next year, I hope you don’t renew your season tickets (if you have them). Donate them to a fan who doesn’t mind offering their firm (not just after the great wins) support to the youngest team in the ACC, who just lost their only experienced lineman and is playing 16 freshmen or sophomores at the 22 offensive and defensive positions. A team that is learning a new system and a new coach. A coach who doesn’t have his own recruiting class in place yet. A coach who has returned accountability and discipline to the Flats.

They HAVE overachieved all season. They HAVE won games they shouldn’t have won. I guess in this microwave world of instant gratification, nothing short of undefeated is considered a success… even for a young team in its first year under a new coach.

I hate to think what your reaction would be if you were a Michigan fan for God’s sake. My seat on this bandwagon isn’t for sale and I won’t be getting off just because a banged up, young team got beat by a pretty good UNC team.

Melinda,

Well said! This team has nothing to be ashamed of and the true fans are proud of their effort and accomplishments this year.

This game was much closer than the score indicated. If not for some inopportune turnovers (none of which were option related) and a couple of tough penalties, we might have pulled it out.

Now let’s set our sights on beating the puppies. From what I saw today of their defense against Kentucky, that is certainly a realistic possibility.

Go Jackets!!!

I am a Michigan fan - and I live in Ohio! Figure that one out. But my IQ is 150 and at my age - that is remarkable. IQ’s are at their highest in our mid-20’s and decline from that point forward. I never took the test in my mid-20’s but assume it was near 170-180.

Lol. If not for some turnovers and penalties, every college team would be undefeated!!!! How many times you going to use that excuse? We were flat out sorry today. Now we have 10 days to dwell on that. Our players are freshman and sophs - they don’t have the maturity to forget about that game and move forward. Unfortunately, I predict 3 losses to end the season. Sound familiar?

VERY SIMPLE … Paul Johnson’s “gimmick” old-fashion, outdated offensive is a JOKE against smart, athletic teams .. (not smart and disciplined) ..hence why we win against div 2 teams and FSU/Mississippi ST .. and get BLASTED by all the teams “like us” ..

This offensive experiment HAS to end .. DRAD step in .. he needs to go more spread than only triple O or we are DONE

Call for DRAD to step in!!!!!!!

ALSO … is there some sort of GA huckleberry love affair with Hambone Shaw? .. that guy shouldn’t be on the field.

So Paul Johnson (or goofy homer) .. CHANGE YOUR OFFENSE, IT AINT WORKING. and dont givde the ignorant “it worked against ACC when at Navy crap” … it worked then cause you played marginal ACC teams inbtween their league games and didnt bother to prepare for you. Thats all.

WAKE UP and realize ANY smart, disciplined atheltic team who prepares will SHUT YOU DOWN .. over and over and over.

THAT aint going to change in 2-3 years.

John,

I don’t think I questioned your intelligence. I just think it’s sad that as fans we can’t get behind our young student athletes who devote a large portion of their time each week to practice, study and representing their school to the best of their ability. I think it’s sad that we can’t support them through inexperience and injuries and a bad day at the office.

GT Fan 12, How is giving up 430 plus yards stopping the option? Do you think this offensive line could block for a passing game? They are getting beat six ways to Sunday and you think they could pass protect? Did you ever stop to think that adding passing wrinkles when a team is this young and already digesting tons of new schemes might make for some even uglier play?

FSU had some amazing defensive stats prior to playing GT. No plays given up over 25 yards… they gave up 3 in 3 quarters. Insane 3rd down conversion rate… still got beat. Bowden admitted after the game that they couldn’t stop the “wishbone”.

With your rationale every team sucks and every offense sucks. Saban, Joe Pa, Urban Meyer, Mack Brown are all idiots - as they have all lost or about to lose this year and Urban and Joe Pa to unranked teams.

UNC will probably finish the year 12-2 if it makes you feel better.

WHO CARES about 400+ yds when you CANT score? .. game is won on the SCOREBOARD. The “high school option” is a joke. It is good for undermanned teams to compete and control clock ..

but NOT to win or score .. we are one of the WORST teams in NCAA within the 20 .. gee, why do you think that? .. casue the field is too small to SCORE .. that triple option is a JOKE. It relies on long runs (i.e. Dwyer) but is USELESS in scoring against athletic teams

WAKE UP … Gomer’s offensive is being WAY exposed and it is only the first year!

So those 31 points against FSU were a mirage? This was the lowest score of the season. I believe 17 points is the next lowest scored by this squad.

it’s easy from the lazyboy at home to give your opinion on the Jackets performance today..but once again, (just like I was there at Clemson) I was there to witness the intimidation of a sellout crowd of an opposing team .. a team that just so happens to be powerful at that.. I think seniors and juniors could handle it better than this young team. The NC team and fans were waiting for this game and having an extra week for the Tarheels to prepare went in UNC’s favor. Hopefully having more than a week to prepare for Miami will go in GT’s favor.

With two games left with a vastly improved Miami and UGA, we’re are staring at another 7-5 team and a trip to the crapper bowl. It’s just the same song, different verse. I really blame the administration that believes they can bring in a 55 year old head coach to establish what?; the future? If you’re going to establish the future, it’s with a younger proven coordinator (ex: Mark Richt). Why does Tech keep settling on guys like PJohnson, who’s other option was perennial loser SMU? There’s a reason why the triple option isn’t used by major football schools, and today gave us a glimpse. I won’t talk about the call to use a hurt QB, take him out when you get to 4th quarter. His back up makes a mistake, he pulls him to put back in the hurt starter; for what? Excluding the one long run, the offense did not work the whole game, period!

Very well said Navigator. You need great players to win; the great players want to move on to the league. CPJ may get the most out of his players, but the best players will be going to another school. CPJ belongs at a service academy, Duke, SMU, etc.

The future looks so bright I have to wear shades.

Many of the bloggers on here are not GT fans; they are hoping CPJ or others who speak to CPJ will get wind of this crap. They hope he will leave because they know he is recruiting well and overachieving already with what he has inherited. In a few years, no one will want to play his teams, and especially UGA.

This man is a coach, and you saw the emotion at the end of the game today. He was still coaching, and you could plainly see he hates to lose. If we go 9-3, 8-4, or 7-5, it will be a great start. Look what he did in his 2nd year at Navy. We will definitely improve from year 1 to year 2.

When you recruit top grade talent and then let it lanquish on the vine..especially defensive talent..9 starters returned..albeit there were injuries..You have to look for some new thinking. Paul J. will at least reevaluate the situation..what was it said by Einstein..”to keep doing the same thing and expect different results is insanity”..Georgia is a great example! From the looks of the Wildcat option Georgia is ill prepared for the Tech formation..you may hold out some hope for that…Richt will not make CWM change.

Yes, it was a dreadful game today, and every program has losses like these from time to time, so I accept that…

But what concerns me most is that in the last 3-4 games, Paul Johnson has shown the inability (or maybe a stubborn unwillingness) to make adjustments during the game in terms of playcalling. He runs the risk of becoming very predictable. When something stops working, make a change! For instance, the way our offensive line was not providing any protection today, there should have been constant roll-outs by the QB or quick slant plays or something to adjust to the situation…

You may say that the predictability is because of the option scheme, but was the Joe Hamilton option-based offense predictable? Hardly…

So that is my big concern with what I’ve seen so far under CPJ.

If you want to give your tickets to an opposing fan please hurry up and do it. That way I won’t have to listen to your holier than thou crap. I would much more enjoy the company of an opposing fan than this crap. I travel plenty of distance to go to games, I donate to the AT and regular GT funds. Your point is? We need to get a Mark Richt; that’s the ticket. Then we can see if we can keep up with UGA in the number of times Tech players show up on police report. Discipline, who needs it. Apparently, people can’t figure out why we got Johnson as coach. It might be because he’s the closest thing to a Dodd type coach we’ve had in a while. He did win the Do dd coach of the year awhile back. . I’ve followed Johnson back when he was at Georgia Southern. You would not believe the Southern people who follow the guy still even though he has not been there for some time. Maybe you should ask why that is.

Turnovers cost us 2 td’s and that is part of the game, unfortunately. If we are going to turn the ball over 3 to 4 times a game and still have a shot at winning the game then we need to do more passing in our offense. If we can keep the opposing defense off balance that will really open up the option game. All we have to do is look at the Fridge’s offense who used the option well, but it worked because they feared our passing attack. It also appeared Nesbitt was not totally 100%. So all things considered we still had an outside shot in the 4th quarter. It looks from TV that we can hit the short passes pretty good, maybe that can open the option and long passing game up. But it does’nt make sense to pass if we throw 30 times and only complete 10. This back-half schedule is extremely hard so one game at a time.

Posers must leave, they obviously know nothing about football. The game was lost on the offensive line, plain and simple. Had nothing to do with scheme, you could of put any offensive scheme in the nation and Tech would have gotten beat today. If you don’t execute you lose. That’s only magnified when the offensive line does not execute as one unit. There’s plenty of excuses for why the didn’t execute; injuries, youth, etc. but it’s execution people, not scheme.

The Johnson will work fine, look at Texas Tech, it’s a modified Johnson, they’ve been running it for a few years, the difference, they have the talent and ability to execute it. Give it time you McFans, this isn’t a combo meal, this is college football and establishing greatness isn’t something you drive up and and order and have in 2 minutes. Get perspective before posting, you sound a lot like the UGA-ly crowd, and frankly Tech doesn’t need you.

I think that we have some pretty good offensive linemen redshirted and/or verbally committed. That should bode well for the future. Our oline, which was not our strength in the first place, is really beat up now. Things will get better if we can get stronger in that position.

Goldarchie77: “Texas Tech is running a modified version of PJohnson’s offense”. What planet are you from, that team passes almost 50% of the time, to several outstanding receivers. PJohnson is running a plain vanilla triple, passing about 15% of the time. I have no issue with folks supporting their point, but not with BS.

It’s a shame that a team has one bad outing and fickle fans start blasting the coach and team. This is a very young team that will only get better. Paul Johnson has shown that he can make a winner out of less talent so at least give him a chance to improve this team. A visit to the history books may have prepared the Jackets a bit more for the game against UNC. Those that remember the mid 80’s know it was the peak time for the triple option, mostly from Barry Switzer’s Oklahoma team. There was an abrupt ending of that offense in the 1988 NCAA championship game. The “U” shut it down with assignment blocking and speed. The defensive coordinator was an unknown guy named Butch Davis. This game effectively ended the option. Add the current UNC defensive coordinator, John Blake, played on that Oklahoma team, and well you get the picture. Tech will be OK and have success, but everyone now knows how to stop it. Time to add some variations.

GT12, John, SA - Jacket you are either truly ignorant people, dawg fans or both. I have never seen more idiotic crap posted by so-called Tech / football fans in my life.

You guys need to get a life, but as 12 year olds it might be your bed time now. Please do us Tech fans a favor and find another a team to follow. With “fans” like you who needs enemies.

Great effort, only 7-0 going into the 4th Qtr. I never dreamed Tech would have this record at the start of the season.

My analysis of keys to the game:

  • The week off really helped the Heels, giving them time get their injuries healed and to learn to defend the triple option.. I thought we should have countered that at the start by completing several passes right away to loosen them up since they had 8-9 in the box as I expected. I suggest this approach for the Dawgs who will also have an extra week to prepare and will see this tape.

  • Tech is beat up and the injuries hurt us esp. in the secondary. Freshman Michael Peterson # 35 hurt us on 2 big plays. [a] UNC’s 1st possession, 3rd & 26, he was in front of the receiver in double coverage and just waived at the ball as it went by him for the first down. That was a killer and a game changer. Had they punted and Tech scored first, who knows? [b] On Roddy Jones’ fumbled punt, the ball rolled right to Peterson, and he didn’t fall on it. UNC recovered. Another killer. I know we are not deep and have to play who we have, but CPJ might consider someone else. Nesbitt wasn’t 100%, and I was afraid he was going to be hurt worse. I thought Jaybo Shaw should have played more. He looked pretty good, except for the fumble. I want Nesbitt to be healthy for the Georgia game.

  • Score 7-0, Tech had 1st down at the UNC 29, and 2 big penalties killed us. I couldn’t see the chop block on #70 on my DVR, so I can’t say if it was a good call. On the 2nd penalty of holding, however, I thought Dwyer was clearly hit out of bounds and the Raycom announcer, Doc Walker, agreed, but no flag on UNC. They should have been off-setting penalties. Instead, it was an almost impossible down and yardage situation for Tech.

  • The turnovers hurt badly, but they came when we were down 2 or more TD’s and pressing. Had some of the factors cited above worked in Tech’s favor, I feel the turnovers might not have happened. I don’t blame Jaybo for his fumble, He was hit twice, and I thought his knee might have been on the ground, but it was a close call.

  • The missed field goals hurt, even though they were long. They were badly off target. Scott Blair did not have a good day punting either. We had great rushing stats, but our field position was so poor we couldn’t convert the stats into scores.

  • UNC is very good and might have won anyway, but I think the game was closer than the score indicated and we could have won had the breaks fallen our way. I give the guys all the credit on the world. They played hard and never gave up. We have a few extra days before Miami, so hopefully some of the bruises will heal up by then. Realistically, I thought we were a long shot to get Division Championship anyway since Va. Tech has the inside track. Now, it would take a miracle, but that’s OK. BEATING GEORGIA WOULD BE HUGE. Bobby Dodd holds the record of 8 straight, and we don’t want the Dawgs to tie it.

  • GO JACKETS!! BEAT THE CANES ON NATIONAL TV!!

StingDoc, please take your meds and go to f’ing bed, dork.

The Dawgs will show your silly-azz team up for what it truly is (triple-fumble) very shortly. UNC already has done that, azz-clown. Now it’s UGA’s turn to give your new coach another smack-down and deny him what he was ultimately hired to do - beat the BullDawgs. Ain’t gonna happen there, sting boy. Now c’mon over here to A-Town and get your azz whuppin because we’re ready for ya!!!

Excellent post, Buzzfan1936. I agree completely with your analysis. Bobby Dodd emphasized the kicking game and field position, and I feel that was the key to our defeat given all the yards our offense gained without points to show for it. I hope Scott Blair doesn’r have another bad game like this. I also agree with the devastating bad call when we were still in the game 7-0. I am emailing “The ACC” as you suggested although I doubt that they listen to us. Maybe if enough of us email them, it will at least get their attention.

To yellowblood who is a dawg in drag You are a Redneck, Inbred, Trailer-Trash Idiot. Typically you don’t counter any intelligent analysis with any facts or insightful opinion except to spew hatred. I know you are upset because of the underachieving dawgs whose A*ES have been chomped by Gators and whipped to shreds by Bama until they are Red, Black, and Blue. I know you feel inferior to Tech’s players and students who are so much smarter than dawgs and the fact that you don’t even have a college degree or maybe not even a high school diploma. I am sure you are distressed that the Yellow Jackets have more National Championships than the dawgs, more conference championships as well, and Tech holds a record 8 straight wins against the dawgs. So go back to your trailer, put on the Deliverance music, and get it on Dawgie Style with your cousin-wife’s brither since it you have so many fantasies about “tickle piles,” then sip some moonshine, puff on your corn-cobb pipe, and admire your 6th Grade Diploma on the wall, you moronic trash-talker.

Excellent prose, as usual, Furman, but a bit too negative about the Jackets. I think they played better than you write. The offense gained more than 400 yards and there were many mitigating circumstances which you failed to mention. I am disappointed in your article. “They run it all the time, and we throw it a lot, but in my mind that’s sort of where the differences end,” Texas Tech head coach Mike Leach

“It’s about distribution of the ball. They make sure everybody touches the ball, and the quarterback makes good decisions about who gets the ball. Philosophically, I think we’re incredibly similar.”

TechFan, you seem like too many Tech fans, a little lacking in football IQ. Mike Leach compares his system to Johnson’s and if you actually watch the systems it’s not hard to see the similarities. Running vs. passing is a silly argument, it’s about ball distribution, creating space, and pressuring the defense to your plan. The Johnson is a work of art and will be shown a masterpiece in time and with execution. It’s cannot be defended when executed properly. If you want to argue it’s too difficult to execute, than argue that.

For those bashing the option…we were only supposed to win 4 games at the most this year!!!!!!!!!!!! Am I disappointed that we lost both times we fought ourselves into the top 25, yes. Am I amazed we even got there, yes! We lost something like 18 STARTERS from last year’s team! Living in the shadow of the “Almighty” Notre Dame, I am thankful we have more wins then them.

Second. Many of you say that this is a “gimmick” offense. Wow, you must not know football at all. I seem to remember Nebraska being a national powerhouse for a long time running this “gimmick” offense. The only reason they switched was because their idiot fans were upset because they were not getting many drafted into the NFL. Seems like we have the first part of that sentence and soon the second half will be true.

I never went to GT, only been to campus a few times, and I have more spirit and love for this team that most of you so-called alum. If you really knew more that any coach, you would be doing it as your job. My guess is you would be making more money than your current job. mayorbob I too root for Georgia except when they play Tech. Unfortunately, obnoxious fans exist; look at some of the above posts. We have been treated very badly when we went to Athens for the big game as was an Alabama fan who posted here. Home fans should act as good hosts to visiting fans. I hope Georgia fans are hospitable to Tech visitors this year. As for THWG, it’s part of the fight song as THWGT is in yours so I wouldn’t take it too seriously. It is a shame, however, that fans from the grand old state of Georgia can’t be proud of both schools and wish the other team well except when they play each other. Sometimes I feel that old-fashioned good sportsmanship is dead. Instead, trash-talkers who think it is cool to spew hatred and taunt on the opponents blog, again as demonstrated above, seem to prevail. Too bad.

We lose our best offensive lineman to shoulder surgery. UNC has 2 weeks to prepare and they play us at home. Both of these point to a loss. We also forget that this is a very talented UNC team.

Many point to Paul Johnson’s record against Div. 1 teams outside of his conference at Navy and say this offense can be effective. I think when ACC teams know that they will see this offense every year, they will be better prepared and it will become become harder to win. An athletic team with a bye week before our game will be a tough game to win, period.

That said, I think that PJ has overachieved this year. I was realistically hoping for 6 wins at best, and I would dare say that most Tech fans felt the same way. Look at Navy’s first year. After that, the Midshipmen became more adept at holding on to the ball and executing. If we can reach that level of competency, we will be in every ballgame that we play. I do believe that we will be more competitive with PJ at the helm. I also beleive Tech’s winning percentage will go up. My only doubt is that we will not be able to post the wins needed to compete for a place the ACC Championship.

Guys, I said after the FSU game that I wouldn’t disbelieve again and I won’t. However, you have to admit the Paul Johnson has failed in his 2 biggest games of the year to date. UVA and now UNC. These were winnable games that we choked on. I like Paul but he is really stubborn! However, Butch Davis outcoached hime without a doubt. Do I think that PJU will get outcoached often? No. But he has alot of changing to do for GT to be successful. Finally, to all of the bloggers here that say that GT will do this and that(beat UGA and win ACC in year or two) you sound like Clempsun fans!!!!! I love GT and I want what you say. However, PJ will not consistently beat UGA and GT will NEVER get to the ACC Championship in the next 10 years. The rest of the ACC is catching up and GT is only in the middle of the pack in its division. Sure GT will get better, but so will Miami, UVA, VT, and UNC. Your fools to say GT will do this and do that! Not only are you fools but your blithering idiots! If you want to be a real fan you’ll keep you idealistic dreams to yourself. This was a tough one to lose. But, the progress of the overall season is still encouraging. Injury, turn-overs, and a good defensive effort by UNC made this a really tough game. We need to heal up and get our key players back to full strength, including Nesbitt. Our defense was terrific inspite of having to overcome the turnovers in the second half. I agree with those who pointed out some passing early in the game would have made the UNC defense loosen up a bit. All is not lost, but we must learn and continue to improve. The Saturday after Thanksgiving is still on its way! Go Jackets and THWG!

This would be a good offense if it was 1908. Before the invention of the forward pass but its not. This is 2008 therefore its way out of date. A coach that come in a tries to install (his) offense when you don’t have the talent to run it isn’t a good coach. A good coach installs a scheme based on the talent at hand. Opposing coaches have to look at Tech and lick their chops. Stop the run, game over.

“trip” wrote: “Opposing coaches have to look at Tech and lick their chops. Stop the run, game over.” Duke stopped the run in the first half, and the score was only 3-0. Then CPJ unleashed the passing attack and it was 27-0. Tech can pass. They should have thrown early against UNC, as others have said. On the hand, Tech ran the ball very well. It was poor field position, poor punting, and the disastrous completion on 3rd and 26 on UNC’s 1st possession which killed us. Also, there was a very bad no call which hurt big time when we had 1st and 10 at their 29. We had good luck against FSU; bad luck in this one. Hope the pendulum swings back in our favor against Miami and Gawga!

I was extremely pleased when I heard Paul Johnson was coming to Tech - he is a proven winner with fire in his gut.

My concern with his offense are these two scenarios:

Down by touchdown with about 1:30 on the clock in the fourth quarter - there is no time to run, you must be able to pass the ball downfield effectively….

    and

Down by two or three TD’s in late third or fourth quarter - you cannot run an offense that takes 6 or 7 minutes off the clock to score - you must be able to pass, pass effectively and pass often!

This is where our personnel and offensive scheme tend to show weakness. I am hoping Coach Johnson is going to work on this aspect of our game.

Also, speed is the best option-killer on defense, and it seems that GA always has a lot of speed.

This is when you have to sucker them in and pass the ball downfield. I think that this is where our weakness lies and thus, until Coach Johnson recruits better personnel in the passing/recieving area, we will have problems.

But I have the faith because Johnson is smart and understands football. Give him time.

It is funny how you don’t hear all these bandwagon fans complain when we win against FSU.

You complain about how awful georgia tech is, then why don’t you just do something else with your time.

PJ exceeds expectation for this year. I can’t wait til he exceeds expectations for next year.

True Tech fans:the trash you are reading IS NOT FROM OUR WHITE ‘n GOLD!Overlook the negative and accentuate the positive.

Whiners, losers, deadbeats have lives devoted to being “a part of the problem” (aka: b*** ‘n moan).Let ‘em writhe in their self-imposed misery.

GT students/alums/fans have a “new day rising” on the football Flats—-the Paul Johnson era.

BE A PART OF MAKING IT HAPPEN!!! THWG.

What a bunch of cry babies. I am thrilled by this season and the effort of these guys. The season is long, our players are young, starters get hurt, younger players try to step up, the system is new, the recuiting will conitinue, we will battle to the end of the season, maybe win another or two. Everybody wants to win and win now but come on fans, this is onlythe beginning of a long but steady climb to the top. Way to go players, keep up the great effort and you continue to over achieve, especially above the expectations of some of our weaker fans. I love to watch you play.

If somebody had come to me during the spring and told me the Jackets would be 7-3 at this point with victories over FSU, BC, and Clemson, I would have told them to quit using whatever narcotic it is that they are using! Don’t give up on the triple option offense just yet. If you’ve read Paul Johnson’s latest articles, you would know that he’s put emphasis on the fact that he wants to throw the ball more, but the team doesn’t have an O-line that can pass protect: therefore he has to resort to an offensive scheme (triple option) which best suits the available talent. Give us a couple years after Paul has had a chance to recruit his type of players. Remember, he has Chan Gailey’s players out there. I’m impressed that the team has been able to pick up the offense in such a short time and pick up 7 victories.
