Emotions rise, fall in Tech’s narrow win

It was a game that can’t immediately be defined in common language. For a time, it belonged to Florida State, then to Georgia Tech, but as twilight fell on Bobby Dodd Stadium, it wasn’t easy to remember there had ever been a first quarter. Or a second. Or even a third. And the end came on like a stroke of lightning.

Florida State had twice led by a touchdown, then Georgia Tech took the lead before halftime and rocked along in the second half on what seemed to be a comfortable cushion of a 31-20 lead. It was only then that this improbable game began to take on a totally different personality. It turned on a simple keeper in which Josh Nesbitt gained three yards, but was lost for the rest of the day. And let it not be taken lightly when it is said that Nesbitt is the transmission that propels this Paul Johnson offense. He left the field with a limp and never returned. On came Jaybo Shaw, the freshman quarterback from Flowery Branch.

Not to panic. Shaw had come aboard when Nesbitt went down against Mississippi State and had conducted the offense with aplomb. But this was a different kettle of fish, so to speak. Florida State’s scorching defense kept him on edge, and in short order, the Seminoles had the Yellow Jackets on the run, needing just a field goal to tie. Worse than that, they were within three yards of a touchdown, and thus the plot thickens.

On third down, fullback Marcus Sims launched his 230-pound body toward the end zone, found himself intercepted by Cooper Taylor, the ball came loose and was covered by Rashaad Reid in the end zone, and just as swiftly as that, Georgia Tech’s fate switched from defeat to victory. Forty-five seconds on the clock was written off with two drops of Shaw’s knee, and in stunning succession, utter defeat had been turned into an improbable victory.

It was with a depleted secondary that Tech had gone into this game. Injuries had Johnson left with a secondary composed mainly of freshmen. Taylor, aforementioned, is a freshman out of Marist who has shown sparkling possibility from preseason forward. Tall, lean and quick, he has performed with the form of a veteran. In fact, he was Tech’s leading tackler this day. And Reid, and Michael Peterson, two other freshman, should win gold stars for their performances in the secondary.

Oftimes good defense is overshadowed by Johnson’s spread or triple option, or however one chooses to address it, and on this occasion, so it did. Though in his own summation, Bobby Bowden, who has been around awhile, said, “We simply couldn’t top the wishbone. [That’s his name for it.] They just got too far ahead. That’s the last time we’ll see it this year,” he added, as if in relief.

The football populace will go many a year and never see a game such as this 31-28 nerve-wringer. And it came across in the aftermath, when the turf at Bobby Dodd was swarmed by the delirious cheering section of Tech fans, and somewhere in the crowd that lady television interviewer was overwhelmed. And a cordon of protective personnel stood guard at both goalposts. Such was the day that it was.

Great Game Great Game Great Game!!! Congratulations Tech. You played your hearts out for 60 minutes and in the last minute you did what you had to do to win the game. That is what it is all about. I must say we need to stop giving games away. Richards offsides on a punt. Huge running plays and hail marys completed are the plays that Fisher is talking about being nerve ringing. BUT, we won the game in grand fashion. One hurdle that Paul Johnson and the New GT Yellow Jackets have overcome. Next its following a big win with a bigger win. Go Jackets!!!

I don’t know what happens to Tech when they play FSU. It seems they always lose their quarterback. Sometimes by luck. But mostly because they are taught to keep playing until the whistle blows. I remember more than once when the Semiholes drew continuous roughing the passer penalties that resulted in the absence of Tech’s quarterback in the second half. Just an observation you understand. Bear Bryant used to teach his players the same methods. I still remember when Bama’s big husky 160 pound defensive player broke a Tech player’s jaw by elbowing him. I never thought Bear Bryant was much of a man after that. Of course a sprained ankle is just a bad break. One thing is sure. I don’t believe the fans will be creating much of a quarterback controversy with Jaybo fumbling and getting intercepted. Maybe Paul Johnson is a little like Bobby Dodd. Just lucky.

By MidnightRambler

November 2, 2008 2:42 AM | Link to this

Reviewing my DVR, I noticed Jaybo rubbing his right arm after a series. I think he got dinged and that may have had something to do with the underthrown pass that was intercepted later.

macfute, Furman Bisher wrote an article about that. Before one of the FSU games on ESPN, one of the “Sideline Walkers,” the one who wore flashy suspenders, said the FSU players were telling him they were going to knock Joe Hamilton out of the game, just as they had done the year before, and then they proceeded to do it. Furman was outraged, and I never had any respect for FSU football after that, esp. Mickey Andrews. Of course, Bowden is the Head Coach, so I don’t respect him either.

Go jackets!!!!!!!!!! I unfortunately was unable to attend this great game, but i stayed at home glued to the tube making my house shake i was jumping up and down so much. I would have loved to be there. My tickets stayed with me, though and would never have gone to a redskin loser. I will talk to you guys next week, hopefully after another amazing win! Oh, don’t you think it’s funny that poodle fans have to come and talk trash on our boards after such an amazing display of a #1 teams talent? Too bad that team wasn’t Ugag ;). The game will be played in Athens on Nov. 29 poochie fans…. If you win, then you can talk trash. But the way the games have been played by both teams this season, I think Tech is the one who has proven the most, unless we want to talk about being overrated, then Ugay wins that one. On to UNC next week!!! One game at a time…..

Only 2 teams in the ACC have losing overall records: Pre-season Favorite Clemson 3-4 and NC State 2-6, both in the Atlantic Division. Everyone in the Coastal Division has 2 losses, and all have overall winning records. The ACC has taken heat for not being good this year, but the truth may well be that we have a very balanced conference with very good, but not great, teams. I think we are even in interconference games with the SEC.

once again Tech wins a game they would have lost in the past. Kind of makes up for those losses to FSU in the past, including the questionable comeback in 1992 thanks to the blown call onside kick recovery, (which began the downward spiral of Bill Lewis), and the late hits they gave to Joe Hamilton. Hope Nesbitt is OK.

macfute - check the records, fsu in the past put out a number of qb’s and maybe up to their old tricks knocking out two vt qb’s last year. not sure if whatever they do is legal or not, but they have a knack for it. if they continue this trend, the other acc teams should all put a hurtin on their qb!

what is the record for special team tackles by the kicker - i am sure blair has it! or tackles to prevent td’s - he’s have that one also. tech needs to continue their work on special teams - if the present special teams coach can’t do it, replace him. this is ridiculous.

To me, it was a perfect day! Jackets win a close one against a resurrected F$U, and purge a curse from year’s past. Plus, the bonus is the Leghumpers get humiliated by Florida. The butt sniffers are still a very good team, but it was the Gator’s day.

What an amazing game! After all the games where I’ve watched Tech snatch defeat from the jaws of victory at the last second, it was wonderful for the shoe to be on the other foot for a change. And just think what that televised on-field celebration by the fans is going to do for PJ’s recruiting. People were fired up, and it was great to see.

As for the UGA game, I’ll have to drop by the Panera Bread near my office and give my condolences to the UGA graduate (no kidding) who works behind the counter. He gave me some grief earlier this season when I wore a GT golf shirt to work. The fumbled pitch by Jaybo Shaw on his first play was not his fault. The replay shows the FSU player hitting him just as he was pitching the ball was not blocked at all. Back to putting out qbs. One year FSU had put out every qb they had paly against (I think it was five) when they got to Tech. Guess what. They put Joey out. Coincidence? I don’t think so. But this was the Jackets’ year. Hope we get our hurt players back for the rest of the year.

Hey Furman: Do you think Coach Dodd was sitting up there in heaven just smiling when Scott Blair quick kicked out of the field goal formation and put F$U at their 1 yard line? Also, great coaching by Johnson when he sent the field goal unit out for the 54 yarder, got FSU to burn a time out, then Tech punted. That time out would have helped F$U late. I think that Tech has finally found their replacement for Caoch Dodd - 42 years later!

FSU kind of gain its first legs for a great team in a game years ago against a Tech team that was ahead by 14 points in the fourth quarter. FSU in that spread scored 21 points against a Lewis coached Tech team spelling the Tech coach’s demise and introducing FSU to a new era of Bowden football. I get the feeling this game yesterday has that sea change effect like that game years ago, only this time it is CPJ and Tech that are the new kids on the block.

Bad loss yesterday for my guys…going to be a long ride to Atlanta today.

I just wanted to jump on quickly to point out how valuable Josh Nesbitt is in your offense. Many previous bloggers here (not today, but in previous days)have suggested that perhaps Jaybo Shaw should be running the show. Clearly, I think, he was out of his league yesterday and you guys should be very happy you have JN.

Great win Jackets, especially since Paul Johnson proved that streaks don’t matter! I like what he told the team after last weeks loss: “Good teams don’t lose to in a row.” I think that means every single one of these guys knows they now play for a good team, instead of a decent team with lots of potential!

I think Cooper Taylor is MVP for sure, and makes up for missing tackles last week. Game saving play!

Although, I think Scott Blair is on track to become our team’s leading tackler (haha). That guy has seriously stepped it up! We are asking him to do WAY more than any kicker, and he still goes out and tackles guys that probably have 50 pounds on him. Go Scott!

P.S. Even though he’s played great, a returner should NEVER make it back to the punter! The rest of the ST need to step it up!

I guess the blog does affect the coaches, probably through friends and assistant coaches. But I saw and heard an ugly side to PJohnson. Nesbitt was having the game of his career at Tech, and everyone knows that the score wouldn’t have been close, had he stayed in the game. However, he got hurt and Shaw had to come in the game, and first play the Tech line failed to block the linebacker who blindsided Shaw as soon as he got the ball (a fumble resulted). Next series the coach called the QB to carry the ball every play (as if he couldn’t run the offense), with only a short gain in six plays. How do I know this to be true, PJohnson smiled and tapped him on the helmet when Shaw came off the field. The next series, someone missed the call and PJohnson ran across the field yelling at Shaw all of the way. Is this the way a coach handles a freshman when he was forced to play? Then PJohnson called for a long pass play on first down with time running low in the fourth quarter, which got intercepted. Again, he was all over Shaw for PJohnson’s own bad call, and that was a dead give away that there is something between the coach and the young QB. Again after the game, PJohnson said on TV that Nesbitt had a good game and the fans should get off his back. This surely reminds me of Chan and Ball, and this is disappointing to watch it happen again. Nesbitt is a more gifted player than Shaw and that’s easy to see, but the coach should not insert himself into Nesbitt’s mistakes as being a reason to take it out on his freshman QB. I think Shaw can play QB somewhere, but not at Tech. If I was him, I really would consider a transfer elsewhere at the end of the season.

Nice article Furman. It was an entertaining contest and as things usually go with GT and FSU, the strangest things seem to happen the under other circumstances would pull the victory away from the our side and award it to the Garnett and Gold.

Today it was not to be. Dodd’s Luck was in effect..in the very end.. But to be clear..the players MADE their luck and MADE the play. This was a luck that is borne of effort, will and a never say die attitude. A willingness to fight hard on 2nd and Goal with everything seemingly coming apart. To stick a hat in there and make a play and BOOM!!! find a ball and then the game.

KUDOS to all the players for gutting it out. Mr. Taylor, Mr. Reid, Mr. Griffin..Mr. Richard, Mr. Johnson, Mr. Morgan….and all the others…. GREAT WIN. WELL DESERVED.

Tech faithful. APPRECIATE IT. Give due credit to YOUR players and YOUR coaches. THEY delivered YOU the win!

This is a blog - so it is fair to dialogue.

Navigator - I respect your right to an opinion…but I have to say…

I think your logic is contorted. (But, again, I respect your right to it..)

Tech has just scored a signature victory and you somehow attempt to “create” an arcane negative issue. What does it take to be happy?

Newsflash: WE WON!…over FSU for the first time in 33 years!

Coach Johnson is coaching the way he ALWAYS does. HARD NOSED! And pray goodness he will continue to do so EXACTLY as he is doing to get us to this point.

He is very confident in Josh and Jaybo. He praised BOTH after the game. Jaybo will be just fine after he puts on about 15 to 20 lbs of muscle in the offseason. Josh is the clear #1 right now and will remain such if healthy…

Why not just enjoy the fruits of a great victory and be positive!?!?!

joe schmoe your an idiot as are all the other fans who would jump on jaybo right after the win rather than enjoy the moment.

but for jaybo we could be minus 2 wins and be on track for a trip to NOWHERE. not bad for a true freshman that ran the Johnson (that is the nicname i use to refer to our o…. fitting) better than josh did. instead of 7-2 we could be a gaileyesque 5-4.

while there may be merit in a qb discussion. today was not the day to have that discussion. it was not only an insult the jaybo but to the team as well. last time i looked we NOW play as a TEAM unlike the gailey era.

just remember jaybo helped our TEAM eat up the clock setting the stage for the win. he did NOT allow fsu to score 11 unaswered points nor did he allow them to drive the field 3 times. nor did he totally implode under the pressure.

he was sacked thru no fault of his own and his only pass was short. could be as a poster pointed out that his arm was dinged from the sack.

the kid came in completely cold and helped us win.

i for one am happy to have both qb’s on our TEAM. josh is the starter and jaybo is a great FRESHMAN backup.

all through the gailey years we never had a consistent starter from one game to the next let alone a backup. NOW that we have 2 great qb’s we have people b***.

id rather win than be right!

go jackets!

Please correct the above post which was copied from ESPN after the game.

Here are the current ACC rankings. Everyone in the Coastal has 2 losses except Duke 1-3. Tech is temporarily on top, but must win out and get help to win the division. Count on the ACC refs not giving us any breaks.

ATLANTIC DIVISION School Conference Pct. Overall Pct. Maryland 3-1 .750 6-2 .750 Florida State 3-2 .600 6-2 .750 Wake Forest 3-2 .600 5-3 .625 Boston College 2-3 .400 5-3 .625 Clemson 2-3 .400 4-4 .500 NC State 0-4 .000 2-6 .250 COASTAL DIVISION School Conference Pct. Overall Pct. Georgia Tech 4-2 .667 7-2 .778 Miami 3-2 .600 6-3 .667 Virginia 3-2 .600 5-4 .556 North Carolina 2-2 .500 6-2 .750 Virginia Tech 2-2 .500 5-3 .625 Duke 1-3 .250 4-4 .500

Only NC State has a losing record. The ACC has taken heat this year for not having good teams, but the truth is we have a very balanced conference with some very good teams but no powerhouses. I think we are even with the SEC in interconference games.

navigator. i do believe that cpj was telling folks to get off jaybo not josh.

sure seems to me that the first player cpj recruited was jaybo. i trust our coach’s instincts more than your mindless dribble.

anybody who would tell a FRESHMAN that he should go elsewhere after said freshman qb’d TWO of our best played games (duke an msu) needs to change teams.

i really think you need to root for the dawgs. you have that kind of mentality. do you live in a trailer and do you slobber?

as i said… im extactic to have both young men on our team. they both contributed to the win today.

ps jaybo did NOT have equal snaps with the o the past 3 weeks. matter of fact he has practiced little since his CONCUSSION.

Having been a Tech Fan since the age of 9, I have never been so proud and excited for the Jackets after witnessing such a great, blood-sweat-and-tears, matchup. I was blessed to get tickets and will always remember this victory. FSU and GT played their hearts out. We sat on the terrace in the endzone and several times you could just feel and see the determination from both teams. The fans were fantastic for the most part. Even had an FSU fan come up to us at Broadway Diner and tell us congrats on the win. That’s class. Way to Go Jackets! Thanks Coach!

Too much tight butt play by the offense in the 4th quarter, but a win is a win. After all, Tech was in position to beat VTech, only to lose at the end. One less fumble at the goal line (Virginia), and Tech probably wins. Maybe we finally lost our curse against FSU, only to pass it on to Virginia. Let’s not get too confident, however, as Tech has lost a chance to win the National Championship, because of a tie a UNC. This team took UVA to overtime, so expect a similar game when Tech plays them. With eight starters back from last year, not much was expected from this team. When Richt took over at UGA it was a similar situation, and we know how that turned out. Let’s look forward to many years of success, as PJohnson get’s some good recruiting classes in. Remember the success of Tech directly affects UGA’s success too. The more good players Tech takes from the state of Georgia, the less UGA gets.

I’d rather be lucky than good and we definitely are not good. We all know that we won because of a fumble and we still have not beaten any great programs. The ACC is as low as it has ever been. We always find a way to lose the big games and this will show with the next three games. This scheme of CPJ is only temporary and exciting because we have never seen it before. There is a reason why other great national football programs do not use it. It was fun while it lasted, but don’t be surprised to wake up next Sunday morning feeling like we usually do on Sunday morning….losers.

Furman: thanks for the good article. GT and CPJ: You rock!! Thanks for the awesome performance, and for pulling it out in the end against the arrogant FSU. What a day! This feels like the beginning of a new era. AJC: Why do your so called “prognosticators” pick against GT even tho we were favored against FSU in the closing line? Give us some credit. You are supposedly our hometown newspaper!

Feels so Good!!!

Couldn’t fault the Seminole fans for their smarmy looks with a couple of minutes to go in the game. Their team had come from behind to beat Tech and others so many times before, it has become standard operating procedure. Everyone in the stadium was pretty much in agreement on how the thing was going to play out…I, for one, saw the (same old) writing on the wall.

Oh me of little faith…wasn’t it sweet to see the FSU faces go from smirks to complete disbelief? Tomohawk ‘this’ you goofy bas7ards!

What an amazing finish to an adrenaline-laced game. It seemed fitting that the defense saved the day as they played like absolute warriors!

And, what about Paul Johnson? Is this guy not some kind of genius (football or otherwise?) He seems to have an uncanny ability to know what to do just when. He resisted the temptation to go to the pass when Shaw had to come in and began to founder with the option. And, that was a very long yard on 4th and 1. It didn’t ‘feel’ like the time to go for it on fourth down and he didn’t. It was a great call when he went with the (suprise) punt instead. And…how about him striding out on the field to remind his backup quarterback and half the offensive line who was in charge?! Johnson hardly gave the official a glance when he spoke to him as he walked off he field. That kind of focus just has to rub off on the players. When he finally decided to hunk the ball downfield, the timing was perfect…had Jaybo put a bit more zip on it, it was another (easy) touchdown.

What a blast!

Sting ‘em Jackets! and…..TO HELL WIH FLORIDA STATE!

G********-it…that felt good…!!

Congratulations to the Jackets on one of the great wins in Tech history! To beat that FSU jinx, which has been aided and abetted by dirty play in the past, was absolutely wonderful. Now we need to keep the momentum and play a great game in a place where we have had difficulty in the past - Kenan stadium. And we need to do it regardless of who can play QB that day.

GT86 - Your post is rather incredulous.

If you can’t be happy after a win like this, you might consider just not paying attention to GT football. You will never be happy with it.

Football is never perfect. (Nor is life).

This team just played its guts out and won a tough, tough victory. It CAUSED the fumble and MADE the play to win the game. Shame on you for trying to bring discredit to the effort! The players and coaches deserve TREMENDOUS credit for gutting this one out. PERIOD!

(Nothing personal, mind you,…just my disgust with your negative opinion after a great, great win. Nothing more, nothing less…)

GT86 obviously you do not understand college football. EVery team in the country used to run a form of this offense but eventually all the defenses evoloved to stop it over a few decades and then the spread was born. Now every team in the country runs the spread and defenses are evolving to stop it and the option has returned. Defenses can not prepare for it. And you wrong about no one else running it. Every team in the country has a form of the option they can run with success. i.e Florida, West Virginia, and Ohio State among many others. Football, like everything else, has trends. And the Triple Option is Back.

Oh and you say the ACC is down more than ever? I am just wandering how long it has been since the ACC had 8 out 0f 12 teams ranked at some point in time during the season. The problem is they keep beating themselves.

I am also tired of hearing about the SEC. THey have two good teams in the conference in Florida and Alabama. And for all this the SEC teams have the toughest schedules around. Lets not forget that Alabama has the 59th ranked schedule in the country. And lets not forget that Florida has not beaten a top 25 opponent outside of HIGHLY OVERRATED Georgia and LSU. Georgia fans amd SEC fans it is time to realize that your entire conference is not good at all. THe SEC is 2-3 against the ACC this year. Those are facts. However the Big 12 is hands down the best conference in the country this year. Deal with is SEC fans. The years of your entire confence being over hyped and having 5 teams ranked in the top 25 who have proved nothing and only play each other with no out of conference schedule then lose in bowl games are over. GO GEORGIA TECH

GT86,

Please stop being a Tech fan. Most Tech fans have intelligence. Your post made no sense at all so really we all should just ignore it and understand you are defintiely not a real Tech fan. Reading crap like that only makes you dumber. I believe you are better suited as a UGA fan for the gymnastics. Football is about strategy and winning, not hype and style. There are always a few idiots out there that make the whole team look bad but Tech fans - usually you don’t see it too much. OK, some of the Tech fans dissing on Jaybo are embarressing. As I said - there are always a few idiots out there. Tech will get it’s national credit in a few years as well as the ACC. I can make these predictions, because the evidence is there.

Hey, I am a proud Tech fan.

GT86, we won because a bunch of kids would not give up. Taylor Bennett put his head on the ball and caused that fumble. The ball carrier did not drop it. Bennett has been trained to do that. That is what you call coaching. Be glad that Tech earned a hard won victory over a very good football team that some sportswriters believe will give Florida all they want this year.

So FSU hits the quarterback. Good. We should hit their QB and knock him out of the game; legally. The feminization of football has been tough to watch. If you hit someone close to the sidelines, it’s illegal. If you put your hat on them, it’s illegal. If you get a boo boo, lay there until the training staff runs out there to help you up. Let’s make the opposing ball carriers, QBs and receivers pee blood after the game. Let them know they are going to be hit on every play by hitting them on every play, not just jawiing about it. It is a very simple game; hit them every chance you get and play until the whistle on every play. Do not let them know when you are hurt and impose your will on them by continuing to go hard on every play. Offensive players should protect your ballcarriers by picking off defensive players coming in to clean up on your runners….especially those little defensive backs. They act tough when they deliver a hit, but watch them whine to the refs when an O lineman blows them up before they get to the ballcarrier. Don’t be pussies. The best thing about Johnson is that he has toughened up Tech players and their downfield blocking has been a joy to see. The tackling has improved. Now if they could learn to “break down” 5 yds. from the punt and kick returners rather than run by them, I would be a happy man.

Great job to the GT team and Staff. Why can’y you guys give csome credit to the freshman OT??? weekly it all about the qb and senior Lt OT when in fact who open the hole for the 31 yard touchdown against Fla.? Check it out a freshman rt OT those kids play just as hard and they get zero credit nor do they get their name mention when they do a good job after all it take a hold team to win the game. Let do better and give credit to all of our kids on the field.Look at the interviews from Gainesville, and ajc. and RW.Who did they interview a freshman OT!!

the 86 in gt86’s nic is a give away. its his iq.

no gtalum has an iq so low. he is a dawg tryin to unsuccesfully troll this site.

as far as being lucky goes? good teams MAKE their own luck. review the past 13 games we have lost to fsu.

there have been few blowouts and many more games lost in the 4th quarter due to a ref call that could have gone either way, a miffed punt, or pass, or fg, or fumble, or a missed d assignment.

we finally have a coach who has really coached our players to believe we can win every game. sweat tears and hard work and preperation won us that game not luck.

the taylor named cooper not bennet was coached to put a hat on the ball an that was the game.

i do believe this game signals the passing of the guard coaching wise. out with the old in bobby and in with the new in paul.

btw what do you guys think of calling our offense the ‘johnson’ in honor of its coach?

i like it much better than the to or the veer or the wishbone etc.

the johnson.

i like it!

Has anyone heard on the severity of Nesbitt’s ankle tweak or leg injury? Without him, it will be very difficult to win. I’ve said it from day 1 that this game at UNC will be the deciding game and we are NOT favored. Trust me, I live in Chapel Hill and this UNC team is a good team at home. We’ll need Nesbitt, Shaw, and everyone healthy to pull out a victory. I got my tix back in August. See you folks on Saturday!!

GTFAN, you call it idiotic, but I call it logic. If CPJ felt that Jaybo was the man he would be out there. He’s not, and as many of has said about you guys giving hand shandys to Jaybo, get off of Nesbitt’s back. As long as Josh is healthy, Jaybo will ride the pine, and thats just fine with me. Of course we will need Jaybo if Nesbitt takes a hit, but there is a clear number one, and a majority of us feel that way.

First, great game by GT. GT played a great all-around game.

Second, it was interesting to observe the GT fans at the game. When FSU began to climb back in the game, I could see countless GT fans looking at each other in a nervous twitch. They knew this one yet another game where FSU would pull out the W. This is a sign where one program simply owns another program. When you have another program so defeated that they cannot trust their own lead, you own them mentally and physically.

Nonetheless, GT pulled out the win. So, I guess once every 30+ years is not so bad. You all can tell your grandkids what it was like to beat FSU back in the day.

Nice game by GT and we hope to see you in the ACC CG.

I used to watch po’ little FSU come to Grant Field, when they were a cute traveling circus that incidentally had a football team. They had to come to Atlanta every time they played Tech. The best the Seminoles ever managed was one tie, in the eight games they played against the Yellow Jackets, who stung them the other seven times.

Then Bowden molded FSU into a football monster, and joined the ACC, after pondering whether to join the SEC. Why’d he choose the ACC? Because he figured it was a softer league than the SEC, and FSU could pad their victory total, and keep going to big bowls. It worked. FSU became the scourge of the ACC. At most other ACC schools you had to STUDY (Miami, Virginia Tech, and Boston College were not yet in the league). At FSU, study was not required for football players. And they were rough, and were good passers and runners, and had a deep bench, and always fresh legs. On defense, they were ferocious blitzers.

My sister graduated from FSU. I love my sister, but I love to see anybody, ANYBODY, beat FSU - - ‘specially Tech!

Ok, I admit that I am one of those that is still not sold on CPJ. He is average at best and that is why he was at Navy. His poor decision to have Nesbitt in there, who obviously is a slow decision maker, shows poor judgement. We all know that Shaw should be in there, but we are not man enough to admit it. And the “white-out” is just plain stupid. We don’t fill up our stadium except when visitors show up and there will be a lot of Miami orange that night, which be be embarrassing. And, we have not beaten anybody. The entire nation remembers that we only beat Gardner-Webb by 3 points and except for a last second fumble, would have lost to FSU. So, the jury is still out on CPJ. If he does not win out, we need to look for a upper tier coach
