The Falcons have met expectations

It began as it usually does in the Georgia Dome. The players from the visiting team — in this case, Detroit — were announced and the gathering crowd booed. What began to develop thereafter was so astonishing I’m not sure where to begin. There’s a story that has gone the rounds for years about a famous journalist, just home from covering a war, and had just watched a football game that would go down in history. Then sat hovering over his typewriter, groping for words and begging inspiration, whereupon he leaped from his chair, and cried, “This is too big for me. I can’t write it,” and collapsed in the press box.

I’ll refrain from collapsing, but I’m on the verge. What those of us encapsulated in the Georgia Dome this September afternoon have seen is too big for the normal human being to translate into words. We slosh through the drudge that has been the fate of the Falcons these last few seasons and we find ourselves stumbling and bumbling through one catastrophic nightmare after another. Would it ever end? Would anybody ever get it right? Should this be Arthur Blank’s life sentence?

This Sunday afternoon the sun came to rest its rays on this bedraggled NFL franchise, and while no guarantees come with it, of all the Falcons moments that I have experienced, none other can match it. No Sunday in Minnesota on the way to the Super Bowl, nor a frigid afternoon in Green Bay, where the storied Packers were beaten on their own grass. Those were but wisps of a fleecy brush with history compared to this opening game of a new season and a change in direction under a fresh command.

It began this way: Michael Turner hit left tackle for nine yards. Then again for a first down. Then Matt Ryan, the rookie quarterback from Boston College, threw his first official professional pass. By the time the play was done, Michael Jenkins had reeled in the ball and scored, a play covering 62 yards, and Ryan followed gleefully down field pointing skyward. By the time the first quarter had ended, the Falcons had scored twice more and taken a 21-point lead.

Was this fate’s bitter tease? Would there be a flashback to failures of previous Falcons? This city had seen so much losing on autumn Sundays that life in the NFL seemed a condemnation to mediocrity. (And I refrain here for falling into the roiling pit of misery delivered to us by Michael Vick, Bobby Petrino and others who shall remain nameless and hopefully forgotten.)

Even when the Lions began a resurgence in the second quarter, there were those of us who began to feel a pitiable nervousness. Tell us this is not another fateful tease. Blessedly, it developed that it wasn’t.

The story had been: Could Turner take the pressure off Ryan? Was Ryan ready to stand the heat of the NFL? Well, it may have been only for a day, but if it was, it was one helluva act. Turner had played in the shadow of LaDanian Tomlinson in San Diego, out of Northern Illinois, a school in the shadow of the Big Ten. There had been questions about Ryan, his arm strength, his high draft number and the Falcons’ huge investment in him. As it stands, it is not so much the football intangibles hovering other them, but the judgment of the new Falcon high command, namely Thomas Dimitroff and Mike Smith, both plucked from the back row of other NFL organizations.

Vindication becomes them. Dimitroff is not one to attract attention, stood along the sideline before the game, dressed in a light colored suit, his electrified hair in place. Plain Mike Smith is just that, a solid man having his first fling under lights, only his snow-capped noggin distinguishing him. Neither conjures up the image of attention seekers. Both have been relatively out of sight while this team was being put together. This is just the first mile of a long road ahead, and nothing is guaranteed. At least you can say that on this one day they have met the prediction of The Sporting News. The Falcons would win one game, TSN said. They’ve done that. The score was 34-21. Stand by for further developments.

Well I guess the FALCONS will win more than “2” games. At least that’s what all the football gods predicted.

God Bless you Mr. Bisher!

Yes indeed. No one knows what the future holds, but, for now, the Falcons have a full grown MAN as a coach and, so far, no players that I wish would just shut up.

Great job guys.

What a game and what impressive performances by Matt Ryan and Michael Turner not to mention the pressure applied to John Kitna especially late in the game by the defensive front 4. Go Falcons!!

Question: did Mr. Blank ever show up on the sidelines before the game was over? Maybe I missed it, but I don’t remember seeing him at all. I think that is a first.

I watched our Falcons come together as a team today. It was very inspirational in that the falcon fans have suffered for several years rooting for “selfish” football players. I am proud once again to follow the Falcons. Furman Bisher got it right, “It’s just one game but what a start”. We are a team again and we can actually move the football on the goal line! Are we gonna be world beaters? Probably not but what a refreshing start for our franchise. Go Falcons!!!

Well said, Mr. Bisher. This was the perfect start to a new era. And if there are such things as omens, I wonder where throwing your first NFL pass for a TD rests? Tampa Bay is on the horizon and not only are they in our diviosion, they typically give us fits when we play them. Next week shall be a better test for these Falcons than the Lions were. Keep the momentum, birds!

In answer to the earlier question: Yes Arthur was shown on the field late in the game. I don’t think that is going to change.

Quint: Yes, Arthur was on the sidelines as usual—big hug for Mike Smith.

Great start with lots of promise. Ryan and Turner were incredible; I was especially impressed with Ryan’s poise given that he’s a rookie. The defense was very solid.

But it WAS the Lions. So let’s not start booking Super Bowl tix just yet.

what a great article on today s game .The thing i am most impressed about is how well coached the falcons seem to be. I dont know if they will win another game this year, but it sure was nice to see the falcons play like they have been coached. Thanks Mr Bisher for the article and thanks Coach Smith and your coaching staff for the way the falcons have practiced and played this preseason and for this very special first game.

Fine performance for the Birds today. Glad I have the NFL Sunday Ticket here in VA so I could watch. Just a couple of critiques. Kitna had plenty of time to thow at times. Like to see more pressure by the defensive front. Also there were 7 penalties for 68 yards, need to reduce that. Generally, solid. No turnovers or agregious mistakes. Offensive line played great, good pass protection and they opened some big holes for Turner and Norwood. Next week will be a test.

The way the Bucs and Saints looked today they better watch out. The Falcons have got to tighten up in the secondary though. That was their big weakness today.

To put this in possible perspective. Another rookie had a very memorable first pass. It was intecepted and returned for a TD the other way by the Chicago Bears’ J.C. Caroline. The quarterback was Johnny Unitas. He still had a pretty good career. Wonder how Matt’s will be.

By Matt who? Doug Who?

September 7, 2008 9:50 PM | Link to this

**Yep…after that Dallas win with Doug Johnson playing so great, there was “Mike who?” after Schaubie’s nice 3TD performance came the cries of “Mike who?”…..so after a win against one of the worst defenses in the league or even semi-league, come the inevitable “We’re Number One!” cries and resurgent bashing of the quarterback who made the Falcons relevant. If you don’t think so, then ask why Blank could steadily raise the prices on tickets for 7 straight years and then POOF!! He drops them down to Arena League prices. Please….it was the LIONS. (cue Denny Greene rant because its soooo appropriate)

First I want to thank Arkansas for taking Petrino away from us… Hows that working out for you guys by the way? Second I want to say I was completely wrong when I claimed that drafting Matt Ryan over Dorsey was a mistake! What I saw today on the field of the Georgia Dome was spectacular! My God we look like a football TEAM! For all those still whining about a certain player, get over it… what you have now is a quarterback with diligence who studies film religiously (#7 never did that) has a very good arm and intelligence and two exciting running backs who can give you that excitement you seem to so dearly miss! I’m looking forward to the future and putting the past behind us!

I was at the game, and they played like the Falcons of old!! (You know the ones that one 11 games a few years back) But I’ve been to a lot of Falcons games, and have never seen a team more fired up, and more wanting to win. But this goes out to all you Falcons fans: Come out the Dome and support these guys, I maybe just a crazy fan, but this team may turn some heads this year!! There is no reason why we shouldn’t sell out every game. Man up Falcons fans!!! Let’s do it right this time, and make a statement!!! GO FALCONS!!!

I just want to thank the Falcons for one of the most enjoyable days of my life. Football is the only sport that I care for and the Falcons are my favorite team.

From the day they started, I have been a loyal fan and I always will be. I have stuck through thick and thin and never wavered in my support. I never will. There will be losses in the future as well as wins, but today was not just a win.

Today was redemption for all of us who have stood by this team. I would have been here if it had come five years from now, but it came today. I love the Falcons. I always have and I always will.

Go Falcons!!!

It was good to see that big smile on Arthur Blank’s face. He deserved it. He has been through a lot with this team and did not deserve the way he has been treated by coaches Mora & Petrino, nor Players (and I prefer not to mention names - but you know who) and Bill Parcells.

What he does deserve is our patience as well as our gratitude for keeping our beloved Falcons in Atlanta and his diligent effort to build a quality team. Now we see progress. We now have many of the rights players, leaders and coaches and more will be added.

We have long had the right owner.

Go Falcons!!!

Isn’t it good enough to say it was an impressive win over a bad franchise? Why discredit yourself by basically saying that this week 1 win is the best win in Falcon’s history? No wonder Atlanta sports fans get no respect nationally — we’ve got jesters like Bisher representing us in the media.

What a difference a healthy O-line and an experienced O-line coach makes. Also helps to have a coach calling plays you actually practiced. Turner and Norwood were great, but I would like to see Snelling giving Turner a break every now and then. He ran great in pre-season too. Professional coaches make a big difference!

I hope the nay sayers choked on their words and that they too can now quailfy as true Falcon fans and not just critics that want to be heard. It was a good game for Atlanta. Ryan played well. He does need to take a look at a few passes. There was one at the end of the 2nd quarter that should have been picked and run back for TD by Detroit. He telegraphed the pass all the way, and the velocity of the pass is all that kept the Detroit Linebacker from taking it to the house.

Things like this will determine whether or not he’ll be an elite QB in the NFL. Can he learn to look of that LB in the future? Will he decide not to throw that pass? One game can’t tell us these things, but it’s obvious that he has all the tools to accomplish great things for this team.

The falcons have met the expectation of opening day, which is to win the game regardless of opponent; New England or Detroit…just win the game.

In fact they dominated this game except for one moment in time. That moment was affected more by the coaching staff than the players. At this moment we were up 21 -7, less than 2 minutes in the half, on our on 15 yard line with the ball. We should have ran out the clock instead of getting carried away with our success and running our 2 minute offense, throwing the ball. We left to much time on the clock, a short field & exposed our corner backs to an aerial assault. Detroit goes into halftime down 21-14 instead of 21-7.

Great game by Michael Turner; Norwood played his role very nicely. Defense was more than adequate to get the job done. Good day by Abraham & Jamal Anderson got at least a half a sack. Matt Ryan had a very good debut, better than anticipated. He did not hurt us, and the play action fake is outstanding, in hiding the ball and coming up firing.

The dome experience was very good, fans were loud & into the game, even though it was no where near sell out capacity. The entertainment value was high. This was a feel good day of football, which was above expectation.

Kudos to Falcons for one entertaining game!!! Tied for 1 place after one week!!

Hey “doug who” Doug johnson got his shot When vick went down with a broken leg, had been on the team for a while, and was no stranger to the system that was currently in place. Remember that train wreck? So whats the comparison to matt, whos a rookie QB in a new system with a first time head coach as compared to doug johnson on a team with a seasoned head coach in dan reeves?

I actually watched this entire game, something I’ve been unable to do in recent years, sometimes out of frustration with the mediocrity of performance and displays of spoiled children in men’s bodies crying for attention after making a play they were expected to make all along. This is the first time since the Reeves years that this looked like a team to cheer for. Congratulations to this new administration, new coach, new players, along with those retained for a great performance.

I was extremely pleased with the game Sunday, and with the direction the Falcons are headed.

REALITY CHECK - So you beat Detroit, next Disney Land? Listen up you “low self-esteem” losers. First off, Mark Bradley fits you losers well. Enjoy that “college level” victory, now it’s time to face a “real” defense. You might as well put Ryan on the “IRL” right now - thats Injured Reserve List for you fair weathered fans, which means 80 percent of you inbreds.

We beat you with Mike Vick, so just imagine the whooping you gonna get with “Soon to see stretcher” Ryan. We needed an easy win and you are just what the doctor ordered.

Welcome to REALITY! We are going to stack the line with 9 in the box all night, daring that tinkerbell Ryan to pass on us. Oh yeah, throw in a bunch of blitz plays, you will be right back to 1967.

After reviewing the video on the NFL Network, I am positive that the “pass” thrown by Jay Cutler of Denver at the end of the game was in fact a lateral! Why, when the ball traveled backwards, was the official blowing his whistle??? A Little League official knows that when a ball leaves the quarterback’s hand and goes backward, it’s a LIVE ball!!! That was the most egregious error by an official I have seen in professional football, and he should be fired. The fact that, with all the electronics available to “get calls right”, the officials still blew the call is a testiment to the bone headed bureaucracy of the NFL. I have no emotional ties to either team, but feel the game has been seriously damaged by incompetence.

So I called you at home and you verified I was correct. Those were the good ol’ days,— when Norm Van Brocklin wore a white shirt and tie, smoking a Chesterfield while coaching the Falcons.(QBs Bob Lee and Dick Shiner). When Dan Reaves brought the Broncos to play at old Atlanta/Fulton County stadium he said the field was the worst in all the NFL,(and actually dangerous for the players).
