Are you an avid runner? Why do you run?

A recent Miami-Herald article extols the virtues of running, leading up to this Sunday’s ING Marathon and Half Marathon on Miami Beach. Runners mentioned three reasons they run: it tones the body, calms the mind and builds up the heart.

To us non-runners, it just looks like pure torture.

If you’re an avid runner, tell us why you run?

I started running last spring, mainly to cross-train. I needed to learn the discipline so that I could achieve my goal of doing a triathlon after losing 50 pounds. I must admit to walking part of the run on that event.

Needless to say, running has been very difficult for me. I recently changed my strategy to go slower but longer, making sure my heart rate stays in the target zone.

Hopefully, that strategy will result in my getting faster over time.

I’ve been an avid runner for many years. I’ve run countless 10k races, about 10 half marathons, and 2 full marathons. I began running when I was around 24 years old and have been running ever since. Why? It’s fun! Plus it’s a cheap way to stay in shape. All you need is a pair of shoes, some shorts, and a t shirt! What other sport can you participate in for less money? I love running because it takes me away from the pressures of everyday life. You can just disappear in the experience and not worry about anything! Plus, everyone knows that running is good for you! It helps you maintain a good body weight, and it’s good for your heart. If you run, you can eat basically anything you want to; after all, you are “running” it off. There are so many reasons to run! Try it! It will change your life!
