Watching racy TV increases teen pregnancy?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Here’s a groundbreaking study suggesting that pregnancy rates are much higher among teens who watch a lot of TV programs with sexual dialog and behavior, compared with those who have tamer viewing tastes. Teens who watched the raciest shows were twice as likely to become pregnant over the next three years as those who watched few such programs, according to the study.
Wow. What say you?

This study just confirms what most of us parents already knew — that casual sex which is rampant in many TV shows gives teens the impression that sex is no big deal. It has been that way for a long time and this study is finally catching up.
Where are their role models? Hollywood is the worst for out-of-wedlock kids.

They actually paid money to find this out? I could have told them this for free!

Sexy television combined with abstinenance only can’t be good for lowering the teen pregnancy rate.
it sems to me that parents who have frank discussion with their teens about sex are the same ones who actually supervise what their kids do.
Less TV is better. Look at what happens when they watch too much ultra violent programming.

It’s called BAD PARENTING people! If parents allow their kids to watch “sexy” TV shows, it is their fault. Also, that is just the way things are now-a-days. 16-18 year olds are going to have sex. So what? Deal with it. Just teach them about condoms, the pill, etc.

I’ll bet if more parents had the “talk” with their kids and, instead of trying to keep them from having sex they focused on choosing to be safe instead, the pregnancy (as well as disease) rates would drop drastically.
But parents will always try and make their kids have sex - and kids are always going to do it. I don’t know what changes in the mind of an adult when he/she becomes a parent but its like they forget they were ever a teenager and ‘did it”.
Just be honest with your kids - tell them you “wish you’d wait but if you’re going to do it, here, I bought you some condoms because I love you and I want you to be safe.”

Um - that should read “But parents will always try and make their kids NOT have sex - “
:) Changes the WHOLE tone, doesn’t it?

The parents of teens are the ones to blame for their actions. These actions are learned behaviors, they are allowed to watch TV, surf the web, read books and magazines etc. Are parents afraid to talk with their children? Mine were. My parents were afraid they might teach me something I didn’t really know yet, they quickly learned what I knew, unfortunately it was to late. I was pregnant at 15. I blame my parents for their stupidity of the awareness of my activities as a teen, and they know it now. They thought I was a misbehaved child, I really wasn’t, just didn’t know what to do with the information that I learned everywhere in society. Teach children how to protect themselves, at least they will not be able to blame you as a parent. My parent child relationship is very open and as a parent I am trusted with their personal information. My children lived thru my struggles and now my success. Don’t blame Hollywood!!

Statistics 101:
CORRELATION DOES NOT IMPLY CAUSALITY
Perhaps those teens who prefer racy shows are also more likely to have sex?

Teen Mommy:
Time to grow up, put your big girl panties on, and take responsibility for your actions. It’s your own fault that you had unprotected sex.
Stop blaming your parents.
