Yes indeed men are cheaters, they can’t help it, they can have everything at home (Sex frequently, a good-loving wife, beautiful healthy kids) and it still isn’t enough. I had a co-worker tell me recently that “NEW” is better, a man will stray for the “NEW” and can still come home to the old like it never happened. If we women would except this behavior frommen as if it is the norm the divorce rate decrease tremendously but what is happening in todays society women are not putting up with it anymore and some of US have started acting like the man by going out and getting a “little bit” on the side. If I had adopted that attitude I would still be married today. Sometimes if you cant join them beat them.

I’m not sure I buy this. That being said, if it is so then my first husband has it and my 2nd husband doesn’t (at least I don’t think he does and hope he doesn’t).

Of course there is an evolutionary advantage for men to have multiple sex partners. By spreading his genes among different women a man increases the likelihood that his offspring will survive to adulthood and have children of their own.

Conversely, a woman increases the likelihood of successfully passing on her genes if she limits her breeding activity to one male who remains close by to provide for her and the resulting children.

There’s nothing right or wrong or right about the situation. It’s the brutal calculus of natural selection. Humans haven’t been civilized long enough to overcome genetically influenced behaviors programmed over hundreds of thousands of years.

Scientist are always coming up with some crap about genetic make up to excuse bad behavior. It’s called self control and everyone need to excercise it male and female alike. Individuals cheap simply because they CHOOSE to. We need to take responsibilty for our own actions. Get some help if needed, but the excuses must end!

Nice post Mark. Everyone blathering about “morals, self-control, etc” just has their head in the sand.

I think some of you would be surprised at just the kind of “moral, in control” man that has cheated on his wife, you’d never know it by looking at him.

Also, nobody’s mentioned the wives that tub up, cut all their hair off, and refuse to give BJs anymore. Cheating would definitely not be as rampant if this weren’t often the case.

I do not believe that all men cheat. I feel that women and men cheat just as often. That being said I don’t think that there is a gene of the lack of that causes one to cheat. THEY WANT TO DO IT.

I believe some men with a certain gene might be more tempted to “stray around” than others just like some people have alcoholism that runs in their family. However, just because people are tempted to do something does not mean that adultery and promiscuity are justified. Unlike animals, human beings were created with a moral conscience and intelligence to refrain from savage behavior.

Modern western society has dictated that marital infidelity is wrong. A signicant percentage of men may be more predisposed to infidelity but that doesn’t excuse their violation of current mores and standards.

Gene or no Gene, it has to do with respect and love for a chosen partner. If you want to continue to experience new people, then don’t get married and don’t have kids. It’s that simple. If you chose to get married and/or if you have kids, then don’t sleep around. It’s really not a complicated issue. I’m willing to bet the scientists who located the gene have all been divorced or are looking for something to back their transgressions.

ok.. firstly, although science isn’t perfect, evidence of genetic traits doesn’t lie. there is a gene variant that PREDISPOSES you to polygamy, not one that makes you go out and do it. the gene happens to be some kb longer than the “monogamous” variant. so, there is SOME evidence to the genetic theory of monogamy. to say that science is wrong and being made up is very ignorant. obviously people don’t read scientific articles that depict exactly how experiments were carried out and how results were obtained. the articles are not fabricated just to lie to people :S … monogamy is of course a choice, and some people are just predisposed to it. also, a predisposition in women hasn’t been found yet.. but researchers are working on it (if you’ve been keeping up with current scientific literature). all in all, this is not an excuse for men to cheat, and if anything, it’s a way to be more knowledgeable about your genetics and know how to take precautions because of it. genetics is the basis for everything.
