Disney cuts smoking scenes

The Walt Disney Co. will eliminate smoking from all its films released under its label and will discourage smoking in films released under its Touchstone and Miramax brands. Also, a public service announcement will be included on any DVD of a film that includes smoking.

Do you think that will make a difference?

Good, there should be no smoking on any kids movies at all. There is nothing benefical about smoking except cancer, and other harmful side effects. Hopefully the rest of the smokers will stop and start caring about thier own health too.

Disney’s decision to ban smoking from all films won’t have any positive effect whatsoever. It’s all politically driven. The more anti-smoking ads and messages you shove into a child’s or teen’s face, the more likely he/she is to start smoking. Kids are rebellious, and they’ll smoke just to spite the makers of such ads. True, kids should be eductated as to the negative health effects smoking does to a body, but their arrogant course of action is proven (a UGA study shows this) to achieve the opposite of their stated goals. Wise up, Disney, if you want to reduce teen smoking, then try something else that isn’t proven to fail.

I find it ironic that the federal government stepped in and forced tobacco companies to remove things like “Joe Camel” and instead spend some of their profits on anti-smoking campaigns. These very campaigns are doing nothing more than creating a growing multitude of younger addicts. It’s better advertising for kids than Joe Camel ever was!

Anyone who thinks Disney’s moves will in any way curb underage smoking is a delusional idiot that doesn’t and never will understand kids.

Besides, what’s so bad about the movie villains being smokers?

“There is nothing benefical (sic) about smoking except cancer, and other harmful side effects. Hopefully the rest of the smokers will stop and start caring about thier (sic) own health too.”

Maybe some people’s lives are so empty and contrived that the only thing they have to look forward to is their next smoke break, those few minutes when they can escape the agonizing tedium of their work, regain their sanity and preclude themselves from slitting their wrists when they get home. ;-)

Jay you are so right. I know I can’t wait to light up so I can smugly blow smoke in to the air for you non-smokers to enjoy. Never thought about the wrist slitting thing, I just don’t think it can replace the joy of releasing that good second hand smoke into the air for jerks like you to enjoy.
