Facial beauty
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Our faces are exposed to all Mother Nature throws at us. Yet if you’re like me, you haven’t given yours the protection it deserves.
As we age, our faces reflect how they’ve been treated. Some of us are blessed with beautiful skin that doesn’t require much work, but that’s not the case for most of us.
Our cover story offers some ideas, including over-the-counter treatments and cosmetic surgery options.
This week the tryout team used baking soda as a skin care exfoliant.
Do you have a beauty secret you’d like to share?

My 60th birthday is three months away; yet I have almost no wrinkles or lines on my face or neck. I’ve never been to a dermatologist for Botox or skin care, or to a plastic surgeon for major work. I credit good genes, a positive attitude, a healthy diet, regular exercise, no smoking (not even once), sunscreen and regular use of inexpensive discount/warehouse store OTC skin care products for this.
If I have any “secrets”, they would include:
Removing all makeup before going to bed, no matter what the hour. Cosmetic removal towelettes and Cetaphil liquid soap do the job nicely. I think clean skin can and must breathe.
Using skin care products religiously every day on my face and neck (an area too often neglected). Constancy is the key to making them work effectively. I use Oil of Olay Regenerist Daily Serum for my face and neck. I also apply ROC Retinol Correxion Deep Wrinkle Night Cream around my eyes and especially on the “howdy doody” mouth/smile lines and neck lines. They all have virtually disappeared over time. Really.
Exfoliating my face and body every day. My skin type likes St. Ives Apricot Scrub (blemish formula) on my face, neck and upper chest. I use complexion gloves with Oil of Olay Shea Butter Liquid Soap all over the rest of me. I apply Neutrogena Sesame Body Oil lightly after showering and then wait a couple minutes before toweling off. The result is that I never itch, flake or peel — and my skin is very soft and smooth all over.
Weekly use of Neutrogena Advanced Solutions Facial Peel on my face and neck. It does a nice job of refining skin and reducing large pores in about 10 minutes.
Wearing SPF 30 sunscreen, UV-protectant sunglasses, a hat and/or covering up when outdoors. I worked outdoors for a living and learned early on what the sun can do even on cloudy days. Wind too. Trust me on this: When you’re my age you’ll be glad you were anal about these details. My younger sister wishes she had been.
Using Preparation H Clear Gel for puffy eyes. I learned this trick recently and like how it works after a short night and/or too much salty food.
Smile and enjoy life! A person who’s happy from the inside out always looks more youthful, no matter how much mileage s/he has. Honestly, that’s the best beauty secret I know.
