Sweet Success: Keeping control
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
The past few weeks, I’ve been trying to limit myself to two sweets a week. That might not sound too difficult to some of you, but I’ve struggled. It’s especially tough at work, where there’s always some sweet available, whether it’s a miniature Snickers bar, warm Krispy Kreme doughnuts or homemade chocolate chip cookies with pecans. If you’re like me and trying to curb your food cravings, our cover story has some advice. It details the difference between a craving and addiction and what to do about both. Limiting my sweets has gotten easier — as long as I’m not visiting my grandmother.
What foods do you find yourself addicted to?

Not really a food, but I am addicted to water. I cannot go more than about 30 minutes without taking a drink….. Other than that, I would say I was addicted to Mexican food, cannot seem to get enough……

This summer I discovered that I cannot have/allergic to what are called Nightshade Foods: white potatoes, eggplant, tomatoes, chili peppers, etc. I’d never heard of such a thing but folks with some types of arthritis and gout who find themselves suffering for crippling pain from their foot to their shoulder, should consider to discuss it with a doctor/nutritionist. Check out the Internet on this topic, you’ll be surprised. I miss tomatoes most but I have my memories.

Sodas. I love a Coke or Diet Coke from a fountain dispenser. I live near a QT and they know me by name. The Sam’s Club on Clairmont at I-85 is a lunchtime favorite twice a week (at least) and possibly on the weekend for the all-you-can-drink soda that comes with your food. Granted, the food isn’t five stars but the sodas are.
Hmmm. Maybe I should look into buying stock in both of these companies since I am supporting their bottom lines …

I am addicted to Coca Cola. An ice cold can of Coke always boosts my spirits. At my worst, I was drinking 2-3 cans a day (some times 4). I’ve been battling this addiction for about 2 years. I’ve tried to quite my “Real Thing” habit cold turkey…didn’t work. I had all kinds of withdrawal issues…anxiety, hostility, headaches (no kidding). I’m still forging ahead w/ fighting this addiction thing. I’m now down to 1 a day. And today, I’m so proud of myself, I poured out half the can before I drank. Hope these tiny steps add up and eventually I can shake this habit. Also hope to shed the extra 30 pounds I’ve put over the last few years…I know the extra calories from the Cokes are contributing. :-(

Two years ago, I quit smoking. Went from cigs to food. Never in my life did I have a weight problem. I gained at least 40 pounds. I don’t look fat, but my beautiful clothes don’t fit right and I am miserable. 2 weeks ago, I cut out all sweet tea and now it is water only, No pastrys in the AM, now a small bowl of oatmeal. Lunch is salad(which I love) and fruit only. I lost 3 pounds this week.Happy, Happy…Oh, If Anna Nicole can go from hugh to skinny; maybe I can too…
