OK, Mom: Your turn for timeout
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
I used to chuckle when I heard mothers say that the only way to get time by themselves was to go to the bathroom. I now have a much better understanding of what they meant and a renewed appreciation of what they do every day.
My partner and I recently took care of our 9-month-old nephew, Dylan, overnight so my brother and sister-in-law could celebrate her birthday. Dylan is “yummy,” as one of my co-workers says. He’s super cute, with a great personality, big blue eyes and a lower lip that rips your heart out when it slowly curls under as he’s about to cry. We, of course, think he’s special, and he is. But he’s like every other baby in that he has high expectations of those who care for him. We’re supposed to know when he’s hungry, tired, happy, sad, teething, sick, in the mood to play, and anything in between.
Fortunately for me, figuring that out often falls on my sister-in-law. I’m sure many of you moms can relate. There are people in your lives who pitch in to help take care of the children, but day in and day out, you are the one responsible for making sure all their needs are met. It’s a rewarding but tiring and often thankless job.
Our story on the family tab this week shows mothers-to-be how to stay healthy during pregnancy. They soon will experience the joys and challenges of parenting. Mother’s Day is your time. Make sure you find a way to pamper yourself. And that doesn’t mean escaping to the bathroom for a couple of minutes. We’ll find you there.
Take at least a few hours to go for a walk, get a manicure — whatever relaxes you — and enjoy. You deserve it.
What do you plan on doing for Mother’s Day?

I am going to a baby shower with my Mother in law then going to take MY mother out to lunch and church and HOPEFULLY getting more than 20 minutes in the bathroom to myself…..ahhh sometimes a good long soak in a very hot tub is all a mother needs.

I am spending time with my daughter. We are signed up to do a cooking class tomorrow afternoon and then on Sunday after we go to church and Sunday school, we’ll go out for a nice lunch as a family. I can’t wait to do the cooking class with her - it’ll be so much fun!!

I am spending time with my family. Saturday I am taking my son to story hour and to the park. Sunday we’ll spend time in the yard and kicking back and playing on the floor of the living room. Dinner will be something frozen served on paper plates. No mess, no fuss. I’ll get a cake from my favorite bakery and my hubby and I will have glass of wine at the end of the weekend.

I am going to spend the weekend with my two kids and son-in-law and with my 8 month old grandson. My first Mother’s Day as a grandmother. It feels really special.

My Mothers Day is bittersweet. My own Mother went to heaven in 97. I miss her so much! My son sent me a miniature rose bush and a teapot. Very pretty! My daughter and her family went to Calloway Florida for her stepsons graduation. We will get together when she returns, probably for lunch. I will just relax this week-end and thank God for all my blessings.

Well, this is not just Mother’s Day, but Mother’s Day Weekend for me. Unfortunately, I cannot spend the holiday in the physical presence of my own mother since she passed to heaven in 1980. However, my son and I, along with my sister and her son, will be attending our very first Arena Football game on Saturday! My son, who is 12, is taking me to dinner either Saturday or Sunday and then he’s going to make brownies for me! I’m exciting about those brownies!!!
But you know, my best Mother’s Day gift was given to me on July 8, 1993…the day my son was born. No other gift compares.
