‘Terrorist’ watch list approaches 1 million names

The federal government’s main “terrorist” watch list continues to increase dramatically in size. According to a recent independent analysis, over 900,000 names currently are on the list, which at its current rate of growth will exceed 1,000,000 names by early summer 2008. Although the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), the federal agency that maintains the watch list, says the actual size of the list is much smaller — only several hundred thousand discrete names — because of aliases and duplicate information, by any reasonable standard the list is excessively large. And, the government’s explanation is troublesome for a number of reasons. For example, if there are so many aliases and duplications on the list, does this not raise legitimate questions about the basic integrity and accuracy of the watch list?

A further problem is that if a person’s name lands on the list, it is almost impossible to get it removed, or to discover whether the information is accurate or faulty. It’s all done — of course — in secret.

Makes you wonder how many of us have checked a book out of the library that someone at NSA didn’t like. Not to mention an innocent political conversation overheard in the checkout line at Publix. All of you Bush supporters can laugh, but both have already happened, causing innocent people much pain and money defending themselves. NAZI Germany here we come.

Red, I checked out a Dr. Seuss book from my local library yesterday for my daughter. Do you and Mr. Barr Code think I’m in trouble? Should I retreat into my surivalist camp in the mountains? I’m worried.

This to me says the Bush administration does not really take terrorism that seriously, when you hear they just put people on it and don’t purge the list as they discover errors. On the airline list it had names like if you had the name Jerry Brown every single person with this name was a potential terrorist and every time you flew you went thru the people at the airport wasting their time and you wasting yours. After awhile it just becomes a joke. They had Saddam who is dead, congressmen, and they had dead terrorists from 9-11. My theory is the real list has so few names on it they are just embarrassed to show us how few names they really have. Bush is the terrorism president we have all been terrorized by his presidency. No doubt now most of this country is being watched by someone, no wonder we don’t have time to catch the bad guys anymore.

Problem is there should be many more on the “watch” list! They include: all union members, all so called activists which are anarchists in disguise, the sierra club, the aclu, naacp, splc, most environmental groups, hollywood leftist celebs, all democrats and all the liberal leftist teachers and professors in our schools, colleges and universities!

Yeah, way to go Zeke. Maybe we should go further and just put everyone with a SSN on the list UNLESS they’re a member of your hate group. That way we catch terrorists even if they didn’t vote Democrat.

Most of us, conservative, liberal, independent, whatever, prefer the Bill of Rights and living together with our disagreements to your police state solution.

The fact is every single government organization ever created is and will always been inefficent. The US government is too large to logically be efficent. This doesnt surprise me at all.

The solution is the people, all of us, need to revamp elections and take the control of this country from the elite rich folks that are currently the only ones with enough money to even stand a chance of getting elected to office. I want someone that actually lives in real life to be my leader. Real life is the byproduct of our current poloticians fantasy world and the only reality the rest of us have to choose from.

Does this remind anyone of the secret files the FBI kept on suspected Communists in the ’50s or on anti-war ‘radicals’ in the ’70s? How about the KGB state enemies list? This is about keeping people under control, not protecting them from the so-called “evil terrorists” that Bush and company keep using to justify keeping secret lists. If you get on this list, try getting on a plane and shortly a train. You’ll be stopped and turned away. Try applying for a job that requires a security clearance. Sorry. You’ll never know until it’s too late. Want to clear your name? Hey, this list is ‘national security information’ so you have no rights. After all, you haven’t been charged with a crime.

I find it almost funny that Bob ‘Impeachment’ Barr whines about the Rethuglicon policies like this that he helped put in place. His actions directly put George Bush and the rest of the Rethuglicons now running the country into the ground in power. He sucked up to their agenda to grab power just so he could be elected. What a hypocrite.

When you vote Rethuglicon, you vote against your own best interests. And the Bush terrorist watch list is living proof.

Ron Lewis, I agree with you that we should have a “real” person in office, but that just won’t happen and will never happen. I fear that this upcoming race is going to be a popularity contest and not a true election.

Maybe they should perge the list, but doesn’t it make sense to keep all the listed names on the list and maybe just group them together under the one person who is using them all? I think that makes a bit more sense than to just “erase” them because we know they have been used already.

If Bob Barr decided to run for 3rd Party Libertarian President it would be historic. He’d be the first Black Conservative to do so. He is Black isn’t he?

Mr. Barr. Do you know which of the names on that list should be removed? Maybe there is a good reason these names were on the list, instead of your “conspiracy theorist” suspicions. Remember the adage about “An ounce of Prevention”? It’s better to prevent terrorist acts than to keep sending the ambulances.

Obama and Hillary will have the watch list at 3 million once they are in office. Anyone who blames Bush for terrorism is stupid. Liberals don’t get it. We have not been bombed since 911. We will be bombed if Osama and Hillary get in office.

GaLiberal, Don’t you have a flag to burn or a marine corp recruiting station to protest? People like you are the reason that are in these kinds of messes. You would rather appease our enemies than take them on and defeat them. I love your catchy names like rethuglicon. It really shows your intelligence level. I’m also guessing that you have a degree in pottery or art history. Am I correct? Most people like you smoke so much weed that you can’t tell fantasy from reality.

The main point is we have no civil liberties now…just thinking about what the govt. may do persuades people to not do things, such as participate in free speech, read certain books critical of the govt…we are not a free people nor a democracy, and are hypocritical to tell other countries that we are going to attack you into democracy…..

I know people who think they are blacklisted, it can’t be proven since bush says it is secret..and now tries to give telecoms retroactive immunity…

Bush and Cheney deserve no immunity…they need to be tried for war crimes…..and crimes against the US and its’ citizens….

It is not an understatement to say we are under attack by our own govt.

Hiding under a rock and being afraid to do or say anything because Big Brother might be watching or listening is no way to live in a “free country”…

People already forget Patriot Act II states you can be “disappeared” without notification of family, trial….so that would apply to millions of us now, and one in ten of us are already in prison being supported by the rest of us…comforting…..

do you people think any of this is about “terrorism” or catching terrorists? it’s like the war itself: it is more profitable (both politically for Bush and financially for his corporate benefactors) to wage a war than it is to actually WIN a war. all the fear mongering and “threat” nonsense is a marketing scam. Bush (and most politicians) aren’t interested in solutions, they simply fabricate “problems” and profess to be the “right man for the job” to fix the problem. there, I said it. I guess I’m now on somebody’s “subversive” watch list.

No offense Repubs - last I checked it’s still, theoretcially, a free country - so you are entitled to your opinions. You don’t like mine though, so you call me a traitor. I don’t have a college degree (have a fairly high IQ though), I don’t drive a Volvo (whatever that has to do with anything), I wear cheap flip-flops (summer), work for a living as best I can, and have never had a latte in my life. I don’t smoke pot - don’t smoke anything. I was born and raised here in GA. I believe in responsibility and accountability and common sense.

I’ve got to tell you though - especially folks like ‘Zeke’- you’re not just unrational, you’re downright scary. We haven’t been bombed since 9/11 so all’s well huh? Well, add up the lives lost in Iraq - ours and theirs, thousands and thousands - the billions into the trillions spent. Oh we’ve been bombed alright. Bin laden must be laughing his turban off somewhere. Are you that stupid or just that naive? Republican should be spelled RepubliCON. You have been conned, by masters of the craft. I bet you think your taxes got lowered too. You were distracted by “tax cuts” going into one pocket while they were stealing your wallet from the other one. Translation: MUCH higher costs for everything you NEED, much less want. Unbelievable how gullible you folks are - hard to see or hear well though, when you’ve got the flag wrapped around your head.

Come on November - a little impeachment between now and then could go a long way toward mitigating any more mess the Decider may further inflict on us between now and then.

What a stupid little post today Bob. You know as well as I do it’s not like they are sitting there at the security line checking through all 1M names on a little print out. It gets ran through a database and if you match then bingo they got you. 1M is nothing when your talking about automated software, even if half the names are duplicates and aliases. Are you pandering to the irrational people already?

After 20 years of having the word ‘liberal’ turned into something debasing, it’s no wonder that mindless fools would think that any American who finds the Bush administration’s brand of executive lunacy detestable must be a traitor. I don’t have to defend my beliefs to you, Republican haters. I was born in America, I salute the flag, obey the laws, pay my taxes, and vote for those whose positions I adhere to. By blindly supporting “W” simply because he ran as a Republican shows how simple and superficial you truly are. The man has been a menace to the American way of life. And lest you forget, he was at the helm when 9/11 took place. Oh sure, you blame Clinton, but rest assured, if Hillary or Obama is elected in November, and God forbid another attack occurs, you will not point a finger at Bush’s negligence as the root cause. Your life would be meaningless if you couldn’t hate a Democrat and blame them for all that is wrong with this country. Sorry, but it doesn’t work that way. The terrorist list is a prime example of government run amok. If you don’t care that your government is spying on you, then perhaps it is you who should be looking for a new place to call home.
