California city nixes swearing

The City of South Pasadena, California, just outside Los Angeles, proclaimed the first week in March “No Cussing Week.” While the city stopped short of making the utterance of swear words actually unlawful, California being, well, California, it’s probably only a matter of time before South Pasadena or some other city in the Golden State, decides to go all the way and try to make it a criminal offense to use disfavored words in public.

Republican Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, who rarely meets legislation restricting behavior he doesn’t like, may urge the state legislature to pass a statewide ban. I guess the phrase, “Free Speech be Damned,” would be illegal.

We have now reversed the political philosphy on which this country was based — government now does whatever it wants, and the people can only act with the government’s permission.

why you rotten sob. how am i going to replace that. it feels too good. kinda like you know what. i want to be the best example that i can for my grand children so i am going to quite cussing. started cussing when i was about 9 and tried not to cuss in sunday school and embarrass my mother. cussing is theraputic. for those of you who have never cussed you might want to try it. it may be the therapy you have been looking for. it’s certainly cheap and anything goes in a family cuss fight. cuss fights have saved lots of marriages and friendships so it’s hard for me to say anything bad about cussing.

Good morning Bob,A ban on swearing would actually improve it’s spread. The uttered word would have to be recorded on numerous documents and repeated countless times at the police station,in court,in the papers reporting on the crime. It’s like a politician having to apologise for something blurted out now.Bt the time he gets done apologizing, everyone in the world knows exactly what he said and why.Remember “macaca”?

my mother would say to my daddy, buddy you are going to hell for cussing. i would say, mama, he started working when he was 8 yrs old, has practiced the golden rule and lived his life according to proverbs 22:1 so if he is going to hell for cussing, something is wrong with the story. what is the origin of cussing ? what came first, cussing or the finger. sounds like something ole mos came up with after doing a few mushrooms.

Nice little bit of paranoia there, Mr. Barr… complaining about what HASN’T happened, based on your speculation of what “probably may” occur sometime in the future.

Slow news day?

This isn’t an infringement on free speech. This is about swearing in “public”. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been in a restaraunt and had to confront obnoxious morons dropping the “f” bomb while I’m trying to dine with my family in a family restaraunt - not a bar. Now, I’ve swore at every driver in Atlanta in the privacy of my own vehicle - but you’ll never hear me ruin your night out with your family. I’m all for a rule like this for public places. If you don’t agree with me, you can kiss my @$$…

This is exactly the kind of garbage why our country is in such a completed mess. We have a failing economy with poverty on the rise and all Barr can think of is who swearing and who is not. Instead of quoting proverbs and trying to sensor people, why don’t you go find out you can be of service of someone in need and stop treating adults like they are children.

A true conservative wouldn’t support this. The less government intervention - the better! It’s a great idea but poorly implemented. One must seek to control their own tongue - not legislate it for others.

Over-react much? Proclaiming a week “No Cussing Week” is a far cry banning speech. They probably have an “eat healthy week” too but I doubt they’ll outlaw McDonald’s.

I guess the purpose of these blogs is to sound as reactionary as possible so this struggling paper can get at least a pittance of ad revenue

It’s a ridiculous idea and would be a complete waste of energy - like Atlanta trying to ban baggy pants. I agree with Ron about all the usage it would make necessary. How about we ban rape/child abuse/domestic abuse? Oh, we already have? How about we spend our energy enforcing the laws we already have?

One must be wary of slippery slopes on free speech. These seemingly trivial mandates tend to snowball when people seem unconcerned.

And why does there need to be government codes anyway? Have people become so spineless they’re unable to glare or comment at language or behavior they consider offensive or troublesome?

And so we get one step closer to a true Nanny-state society. Right now they probably get their mouths washed out with soap. 10 years later, the next time will be a fine. 50 years from now the penalty will be extermination.

Remember folks, Barr said it was in California. I guess not too many of you know what that can engender!! LOL. Seems about right for that area to me..

I’m totally confused about California. They hate the armed services and promote gay sex but want to ban cussing. People need to wake up and realize that this is the crap you will get when government gets its hands on our health care.

It was a proclamation! It was not a law. My God, it is not like the GOP trying to legalize what we can watch, listen to, read or participate in. It is just a proclamation. Untie your shorts.

Regarding Spitzer, I think the GOP should not be throwing stones. At least Spitzer was paying a woman. There are a lot more Republicans caught in much worse circumstances than Spitzer, and I can list them. It is, however, a long list.

Best Dad sounds likes a misnomer to me. Maybe you should spend a little more time teaching your children why they should not cuss instead of confronting ‘obnoxious morons dropping the “f” bomb’. Will be really funny when one those ‘morons’ teaches you a lesson in front of your family about minding your own business.
