Photo galleries enhanced for ease

We’ve redesigned one of the most popular features on our website — our photo galleries — so you can enjoy them even more.

Check out the new look and enhancements: http://projects.ajc.com/gallery/list/recent/. By offering a thumbnail image and sorting galleries by category, we’ve made it easier to browse the latest galleries and to search for past galleries.

Also, we’re introducing daily “Top Picks,” showcasing the best galleries, and “Today in Photos,” images selected from local, national and international news offerings.

We’ll be back to tell you about even more new features on the photo galleries soon.

Meanwhile, we hope you like what we’ve done. Let us know what you think and what features you’d like to see in future designs.

UPDATE: Design and functionality / March 18, 2008

Thanks for all the feedback, your comments are very helpful.

The slowness you may be experiencing is because of a server issue that we are working on and did not come about by implementing the new design.

We are trying to replicate problems readers are having but many times the issues depend on the operating system version and the web browser you are using so if you have that info please let us know.

Also, fixes for several of the problems mentioned are in the works (the “flash” of the thumbnails, the weird resizing of the photos as they load). A few of you have mentioned that you can’t get back to the page you were on before viewing the gallery - if you use the “back button” of the browser it should take you back to the page (the back button on the gallery takes you back through the photos you viewed). If the browser “back button” isn’t working for you, please let us know.

We’ll continue to monitor the posts and work on improvements.

I like the new layout of the viewing page, but I don’t like the momentary return to the slide view page before going to the next picture.

If I select a push button that indicates “next in series”, then I want to see the next pic in the series.

I don’t like the way it keeps going back to show the sequence of photos. It seems slower than the way it used to be. I always check out the photos and enjoy them very much, but I’m not crazy about the new format.

I love em! Would you consider adding a small ‘next’ to the top right arrow on the main photo? There could be confusion as to what the arrows mean, thanks!

The preview of the pics is cool, but you cannot see the picture and the caption in the same frame. You have to scroll down to see the whole picture and then the caption at the bottom.

Well, you hvae messed it up again…the link in photo gallery gets stuck…photo gallery does not load properly, it does not bring additional photos up fast enough and most of the time gets hung up when loading…after viewing photos there is not an easy to return to the location you were before viewing photos, back button gets stuck because you have not told it where to go…yo still have a lot of work to make this easy and usere friendly…please fix it ASAP

I don’t mind as long as you continue to have 15 or more photographs of the home. Seeing the couple is requisite, but I’m really trying to get a sense of the home: it’s architecture, the rooms and decor, as well as some of the things that have been done to personalize it. PLEASE DON’T CUT THE PHOTOS SHORT!!

I like it alot. No more ads? Do you really count each picture viewed as a “hit”? Angela Tuck had written about that some months back when describing your web readers. The more pics, the more “hits” and the more advertising money? Really, I don’t just go to it for the pictures!!

I like the new format. I recall Angela Tuck writing that each photo viewed counts as a “hit” on the site. The more views, the more hits and the more advertising revenue. But really, I log-on for the articles!

This is better? Nearly everytime you all “improve” a feature, it ends up worse off. All I see is the initial pic. It does not show the others. This is the case when I try to view the pics from work as well; so I know my computers are not the issue. Please stop messing with the features that actually work….please.

Gallery format is better.

But it would be better still if photos and captions would be read without scrolling. That would help the slideshow effect.

Photos could be larger. Your format spends a lot of space on navagation scheme. Most Web-savvy folks can figure out how to get back to where they were.

News organizations should remember that accurate, powerful information is what views/readers want to see … NOT your logo or overlay of marketing collaterals. We already know what page we clicked on.

Thanks to all of you for commenting on the Photo Gallery upgrades at ajc.com. I’m the internet photo manager and wanted to repond to some of your questions and suggestions.

Several of you mentioned the distraction when the small ‘thumbnails’ appear briefly in the big viewing box as the next photo loads—we’re working on that. And we had some server glitches Monday night that resulted in pages loading slow and a few bad links. Keep checking back to our photo page.

Yes, as David said above, thanks. As online design manager I wanted to make sure we launched with a post about the galleries to get some feedback from you all. Hearing your thoughts has been very helpful. Many of the issues you mentioned are things we are working on already but some were not. As we roll out future versions of photo galleries (as well as other sections) we want to hear what you think so that we can design and build a better viewing experience.

I liked the other design better, except for the ads. It was much easier to navigate and jump back to the previous page without having to start all over again at ajc.com. As for the content, please post better decorated and designed homes, condos and lofts. Enough of the Kountry Kitchen (yes, no misspellings), fake flowers, craft show stuff, etc. It should be an example of good decorating design! So far, I like the new layout. I usually browse images at my own pace, so the slide show “auto play” feature is no loss. Plus, I don’t have to click thru any ads to see the pics. That was so annoying. Please keep it that way!

Since you’re not using shockwave to display the images, it seems like the image quality is better, too. Others have commented on the new layout being slow. It runs fine for me.

Looks great - but Kinda quirky the way it grows and shrinks with each image. The frame needs to remain the same size as the photos transition smoothly. It’s quite a distraction. Also - when you click on sports - it shouldn’t go to everything under the sun. Good gosh, it’s “Content Hell !” Help us out here. We ain’t got all night to go drillin’ through all this stuff. It should be categorized, especially the local content, baseball, football etc. Now go to work and get this straighten out ! Thanks

(Sigh)…ummm..Okay..You know, I was trying to be patient and open-minded, so the new gallery ehancement was fine at first. However, the truth of the matter is the pictures firt appear low resolution and distorted then transition to high-resolution (or something weird like that), the expanding thumbnail thing is annoying, and worst of all, it’s slow! Beyond these things, why the heck is getting back to the homepage like going through a darn labyrinth?!!! Please fix this freezing, blurry, annoying thing! The AJC is one of my favorite online sites that I visit more than 20x a day and your galleries I most enjoy—please make them enjoyable again. Thanks!

I like the new layout, but hiring an editor may have been time better spent. Reading the photo descriptions in the Tides of March gallery was painful.

Photo 5: This view is looks north past the lake.

Photo 8: The lake at 45 percent capacity for easily accessible drinking water as it continues to battle the effects of a record Southern drought. What?

This photo looks to the southeast showing islands now connected by expanding fingers of shoreline. Shouldn’t there be a comma in here somewhere?

Photo 9: This photo of Laniers looks to the northeast. How many Laniers are we looking at?

It seems to me that when you use the NEXT button, the entire screen refreshes, with the individual photos and then the “next” photo. The old interface just gave you the next photo. I like the old interface better, though the photos now seem bigger - and that’s good.

Renee Hannans Henry did an awful job on reporting what happened at the board meeting in Clayton county. I was there and the preacher did not resign during the meeting. He did it hours before. Also, her words and typos detract from the pictures. She’s saying that the parents are all cheering and there’s only one lady standing up and the rest aren’t even clapping? It looks like a rush job or her going by what she read happened. Other than that, on the format, I’ll miss the automatic play and the large photos but not the ads.

I’ve often pointed to the old design as the way photo galleries SHOULD work. Didn’t like the new design at first, but it’s growing on me. I do like the categories of galleries at the top. Easy to find other pics. Have always liked BACK going back to the story not the previous pic. Glad you fixed that before I noticed it. As for other browsers, I’ve had less trouble on Opera with this version than the previous.

Overall, I think you’ve done well.

And while I’m here, love the google maps on the Auburn stories. Don’t live in ATL anymore, and that helps with a point of reference.

I kinda liked the old ‘pop up’ layout, and the ads were easy to just skip through.

That said, I also like the layout now. I did not experience any problems with it, and it looks more like most photography sites I’ve been to. (Note that since my wife thoroughly enjoys photography - she even has her own side business doing it - I’ve been to a few photography sites.)

BTW: Primary pics I view are the ‘Weekend Away’… GREAT user submitted shots (most of the time), and gives me plenty of ideas. Also makes me even more impatient to go on my next cruise!

I HATE IT. THE ONLY THING GOOD ABOUT IT IS THE FACT THAT THE PICTURES ARE BIGGER. OTHER THAN THAT, ITS A PAIN TO HAVE TO SCROLL DOWN TO READ THE CAPTION THEN BACK UP TO REMIND YOURSELF OF WHAT YOU JUST READ ABOUT! I HATE NOT HAVING THE AUTO PLAY AND BEING ABLE TO GO BACK TO THE HOME PAGE WITH JUST ONE CLICK.

DO US ALL A FAVOR AND GO BACK TO THE DRAWING BOARD!!

TAKE THE SIZE DOWN A NOTCH SO THE CAPTION CAN FIT IN THE SAME SCREEN AS THE PICTURE AND LOSE PICTURE PREVIEWS AT THE BOTTOM!!!

Re: Appling Girl Emersed in World of Dr. Seuss

How did this get past your spellcheck system or editor? The word is “immersed”. It’s what we do when we baptize someone; we immerse them. “Emersed” is an adjective, not a verb. While it does refer to something standing out or rising above, the construction you have employed is ungrammatical.

I thought English and journalism majors got jobs at newspapers! If hat is, indeed, still the case, things are in a sorry state.

Its too slow when trying to get all the pics to show up. But I like the fact of seeing the pics listed below the main screen shot. That way you can pick and choose which photos to view.

I don’t like the way it flashes the thumbnails when using the next arrows to move from picture to picture.

I also preferred the pop-up window with the gallery, so that when the pictures were done, I could just close that window and go right back to the page I was navigating, instead of having to back thru multiple photos, or go back to the main page and start over.

Sorry, I’ve tried and don’t like it. I like to be able to click straight through. With this format you have to click, scroll down to read the story about the picture, scroll back up to click. I like change but not this one.

On your photos for best hooker songs, you could have used hall & oates, spinal tap or louis prima. As always, you are sending the wrong message showing three black women under your title “Hooker Songs”. Don’t flip the script. I disagree with your selection.

I hate the new format. I liked when the photos popped up in a new window. When you were done you simply closed it. The way it is now you have to click on ajc to take you back to the home page. Hitting the browser back button takes you back through the pictures.

I don’t like the new lay out at all. I don’t like how you have to get to the next picture, and scrolling up to read the caption. I read some comments stating it was great, I strongly disagree. I am a daily reader of the AJC. NO MORE SURPRISES PLEASE.

Your photo galleries stink. You keep printing the same pictures over and over and over. Just look at the photos of the downtown area. Photos of the brick building that collapsed was printed at least 6 times. Others were the same photo just from a different angle. Pick one. What a waste. Just like the AJC.

I don’t like the new gallery. The pictures do not display when you click the forward or back arrows. How do you get to see the other pictures?
