Jackets have one more chance to brag
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Athens — If the inferiority complex on North Avenue seems slightly more pronounced of late, is it any wonder?
In March, Georgia Tech watched as the Georgia basketball team, which otherwise was barely treading water in the misery pool, won the transplanted SEC tournament at Alexander Memorial Coliseum.
The absurdity of this football off-season already has juxtaposed questions about Paul Johnson’s offense with the Bulldogs morphing into some fire-breathing, Skoal-spitting creature that ate Tokyo.
Baseball? Now baseball?
“Frankly,” Tech Associate Athletic Director Wayne Hogan said Sunday, “it was kind of nice being here ourselves the last couple of days.”
Yeah, well, so much for warm and fuzzy. After winning two NCAA regional games in relative peace, free of all things Bulldog, the Yellow Jackets lost a chance for some semblance of bragging rights.
For the first time in three days, they shared a field with Georgia. They lost, 8-0. This came shortly after the Bulldogs won earlier in the day, 14-3. Which came not long after Georgia nearly was bounced as regional hosts in two games.
Another one-day sweep.
Was Sundiata Gaines somewhere in the stadium?
Tech was shut out in a tournament game for the first time since 1988. That really isn’t so bad, considering it also was the first time the Jackets were blanked by Georgia since 1969 — after 126 meetings.
Nothing like a little historical pick-me-up before Monday night’s decisive game.
“I would love to win [Monday] and be the team that puts Georgia out of the tournament,” Tech outfielder Charlie Blackmon said. “It’s always a big game when we play them. But the implications are even bigger now because somebody’s going home.”
If you’re Georgia Tech, this would not be a good time to follow trends. The Jackets have faced Georgia seven times in tournament competition and lost five of them. The Bulldogs, after getting drubbed by Lipscomb in the regional opener, and falling behind against Louisville, look like a top seed again. (Their two-game totals Sunday: 22 runs, 33 hits).
The Jackets were shut out on four hits Sunday by a pitcher, Nick Montgomery, who had Tommy John surgery and is Georgia’s fourth starter — except for the fact he has beaten Tech twice this season.
“[Gordon] Beckham’s home run [against Louisville] totally changed the whole course of the tournament for them,” Tech coach Danny Hall said. “It energized them. They’ve got the momentum now.”
And Tech?
“There definitely would be some irony if we could win here,” Hall said.
Hate to put so much on one college baseball game. But Tech may want to grab some glory while it can. It’s only June, and the calendar already tilts significantly to the east.
In Athens, Mark Richt’s biggest concern is managing expectations. On North Avenue, Johnson is just hoping the fumble problems in spring were an aberration.
The Jackets could have made this easy. Win Sunday and rest until the super regional. Suddenly, they are second citizens again.
“It is different having to come here — the bar is raised a little,” Hogan said. “Any time you have to go to the other school and play one of these things, it makes it more interesting.”
Should Tech win tonight on Georgia’s field, Hogan said, “It would add some icing to the cake.”
Problem is, Tech hasn’t quite loaded up on sweet ironies of late. And bragging rights may be in the distant future.

OK Tech Fans admit it…you had a smug smirk on your face earlier today. The UGA Armada had lost it’s rudder on Friday and you figured the Jackets were going to perform the Coup de Grace on our beloved Dawgs this evening. Guess what? The smirks gone and now you face a restless evening full of doubt having watched Montie dissect the bugs neater than a tenured Entomologist. Try to get a good night rest Bug Fans while thinking about that rattling in your closet is the proverbial 800 lb. Gorilla or…better known to you as UGA!!!

You are so condescending! But why am I surprised, all the pups are. You act like Tech baseball sucks or something. 22 out of the last 24 years in the NCAA, top that. I didn’t think so. And Tech smacked Georgia twice this season. 9-5 and 11-1 (at UGA). This is the first time UGA smacked us and it was at their house. Good job. There is still another game left. Tech was in the winner’s bracket of this regional when it was supposed to be Georgia. Funny isn’t it? Stop your smack talking because Tech has just as much of a chance to knock out Georgia as Georgia does to knock out Tech.
Is it really necessary to point out anything else besides baseball? Or does stroking your ego make you feel like a bigger dog.
I’m so tired of the lazy coverage on Tech and the hoorah for Georgia like they are the second coming of Christ. Get over yourselves. Tech has plenty of bragging rights and many of those rights have to do with having some class and respect and well smarts.

The biggest problem I have with all of these AJC (Athens Journal Constitution) writers like schultz is that they kiss UGA’s A** and constantly puts tech down, if tech had beaten UGA sunday there would not have been any mention of it from the likes of schultz. I just hope that whoever wins the game monday that the AJC writers give both schools it’s dues for being two of the best teams in the country who in my opinion should not have been put in the same first round regional but should have been matched up to meet in a possible super regional which would have made for alot of excitement and also would have been sellouts. I could just imagine the atmosphere in athens with UGA and tech meeting in a best of 3 series with the right to go to the CWS.
Good luck Tech and I think you had a great season no matter what happens.

GT06, It would take about 20 seconds to paste about a dozen condescending no-class, no-respect, tech fan comments from most any day in here. So I assume you are preaching to your own a bit in there. Look back about 2 days ago after our opening loss, and tell who was “stroking ego to feel bigger” on our blog. Not well smarties.

Rog, Hate to say it but we (Tech and UGA) are stuck with this sorry lot of Opiniors that the AJC continues to employ (and God only knows why) Agree with the regional pairings but the NCAA has followed this pattern for years and it definitely doesn’t favor teams from the southern half of the country as these regionals are always the most competitve.

Just checking in to get an update on the Junkyard Dawgs, and I had some time to read this article. Do you really think 99% of Georgia fans giv a crap about or will even know who won in baseball? Well, if Tech wins it will only be because Techies will spew garbage about it after the Dawgs tear ‘em a nw a$sh0le in football this year.

Great response! I too read all the smug, but no funny comments by the bugs after the loss to Lipscomb. Guess they figured they already had the regional won and had to show their classlessness when then manage a fluke win every now and then.

quaildawg I know what you mean it just kills me to see either UGA or tech eleminated by the other without the opportunity to have our top pitching rotations showcased so that niether team can say we had to use or 4th or 5th pitchers. I will say that Tech might be better off if it doesn’t have to face UGA’s 4th starter anymore he has owned Tech this year.
Good Luck to both schools.

A sport in which Georgia Tech saw a star recruit die of heroin overdose, as reported nationally just as the NCAA Baseball Tournament started.
Georgia has beat Georgia Tech in NCAA Baseball Tournament Games 5 of the 7 games we have played each other. Georgia has Won 14 elimination games at Foley Field in NCAA Baseball Tournament Games, including 5 of the 14 against Georgia Tech.
Shutout
The Shutout of Georgia Tech brings forth this bragging by Georgia Tech’s Baseball Players, Coaches and Athletic Directors today :
“ I would love to win [Monday June 2 CSS Comcast Channel 45 at 7 p.m.] and be the team that puts Georgia out of the tournament,” Tech outfielder Charlie Blackmon said. “It’s always a big game when we play them. “
“ Tech Associate Athletic Director Wayne Hogan said Sunday : Should Tech win tonight on Georgia’s field, Hogan said, “It would add some icing to the cake. “
“ Georgia Tech Baseball Coach Danny Hall : “There definitely would be some irony if we could win here,” Hall said. “

Just where does Georgia Tech get off with this braggadocio before every game in every sport against UGA ?
In football Georgia Tech Lost Six (6) Scholarships for Academic Cheating 2007-2008 (On NCAA Major Infractions Database for the 2nd time in the Georgia Institute of Technology history.) But, instead, Tech says they are going to beat us and that Tech’s football players do better academically than UGA. The APR Academic Progress Rates just released so that once again UGA has the higher APR than Tech in Football. Again. Tech has also Lost 7 consecutive games in football to drop now to 36-59-5, a twenty-three (23) game advantage for UGA over Georgia Tech in football. Tech fans brag of 11 consecutive bowl games and counting they’ve been to. UGA has been ranked in the Top 25 of the Final AP Poll now 11 consecutive years and counting, accomplished by no other football program in America.
And, so it is in baseball too. Georgia is now 38-23 in NCAA Baseball Tournament Games, .623 Winning Percentage for our beloved Georgia Diamond Dawgs.
Georgia is 24-10 in NCAA Regional Tournaments, a .706 Winning Percentage.
UGA has a National Championship in this sport, Baseball. Tech does not.
Georgia has Won 5 NCAA Regionals 1987, 1990 , 2001, 2004, and 2006.
UGA has advanced to the College World Series 5 times 1987, 1990 , 2001, 2004 and 2006.
Georgia’s best finish in NCAA Baseball Tournament is National Championship.

While Tech sits there and talks about how they think the ACC is the best Baseball Conference, it is The SEC who is while the ACC sits there adding worthless baseball teams such as Virginia Tech and Boston College who cannot play their way out a wet paper bag in baseball. When you throw in this year doormats in ACC baseball already such as Maryland, Climpson Farmers, Weak Forest, and Duke , what you have is half the ACC cannot play baseball this entire year at all. 6 of the 12 ACC baseball teams, are not baseball teams at all this year.
UGA plays in a lot tougher league than Georgia Tech in baseball.
We’ll see how it works out.
But, Georgia Tech’s 57-48 NCAA Baseball Tournament All-Time Record is not very good, a .542 Winning Percentage.
Again, UGA has a .623 Winning Percentage in NCAA Baseball Tournament All-Time Record, far more impressive than Georgia Tech. And, head-to-head, UGA has Won 5 of the 7 NCAA Tournament games between the 2 going into tonight, and holds a 46-game advantage All-Time over Tech in Baseball 194-148-2.
The series is tied this season yellow-jacket fans – both of you.
Why is Georgia Tech picked to Lose this game ?
Bragging by Tech players, coaches and associate athletic directors before the game.
Georgia Tech has only been to 3 only College World Series, and has NEVER won.
Georgia has been to 5 and has Won the College World Series.
Tech is better than UGA in Baseball.

Tech has NEVER beat UGA at Foley Field in any NCAA Tournament Game, ever.
Georgia Tech has NOTHING to brag about Mr. Schultz.
I loved the NERDS NERDS NERDS chant to start the game, and I would not give Georgia Tech a chance in hell of beating UGA with their pitcher on the mound who has allowed 80 percent of the base stealers all season to steal on him. Tech’s starter tonight also has the worst fielding percentage of every Tech baseball player all season long. He leads Tech in walks all season long. He has given up more hits than he has pitched innings. I’ll tell you who is a better pitcher than Tech’s starter tonight Zach Von Tersch : Michael Hutts.

Funny how the guy at the top conviniently left out the Dawgs win over Tech at Turner. UGA and Tech are now 2-2 against each other this season. Tonights game decides the bragging rights for baseball. If UGA wins we will again have the trifecta of bragging rights with football basketball and baseball.

Ah, more useless drivel from the Techies and the barkers. Calling Tech guys “Nerds” is about as nonsensical as calling the UGA folk “trailer-trash”. Call me a heretic, but I cheer for any team from our home state as long as they’re not playing my Dawgs. Personally, I think it’s be damned cool to have the Dawgs and the Jackets in the CWS - they both deserve to be regardless the outcome tonight. National regionals similar to basketball would be cool if the travel logistics afforded it, but I guess with a lower revenue sport like baseball we’re stuck with the status quo.

GT06 & other techies - you make some good points until you get to the class, etc. points. I’ve been to games at tech and y’all have as many less than classy fans as any other team. Part of the reason there are issues here is because tech fans are always boasting how smart and wonderful they are and when we go to the games we see just as many drunk obx fans as anywhere else. Just comment on the games and stop trying to say tech fans are superior - they ain’t (slang used intentionally). Let’s hope we see a great game tonight. Go Dawgs.

It’s really sad to see these two fine baseball programs in the same region. It would have been more cool to play in a super regional against each other. Both schools have exciting teams, but it seems that UGA plays better when their backs are against the wall, which really sucks for me being a Tech fan.
As far as Michael Hutts is concerned…it’s a tragic story, and I thought we were over this. Thanks BuLLdawg for being such a jerk about it. Didn’t Charles Grant just get bailed out of jail for murdering someone and their unborn fetus? Oh yeah…don’t want to mention that, but when a Tech player does something horrible, yes I know it was heroin overdose, and yes it is illegal to have drugs on campus or anywhere, so you can spare me on your BS. Unfortunately, many of us Dawgs get raked over the coals by the trash that some of our so called fans throw out. There are a lot of classy Dawg fans who cringe when we read some of that stuff.I personally wish that both teams could have been in different regionals so that both could have had a chance to advance to the CWS. That would have benefitted both of our programs and the State of Georgia. Let’s see….. Sanford stadium in the 90’s sold out… 90,000+ people. Tech, ever since I can remember never sellling out a 50,000 seat stadium with their own fans. If they sold out, it was because of the opposing teams fans. i.e. Clemson, FSU, UGA etc…
Please don’t go there with saying UGA people did not back their team in the 90’s. I’d rather you keep making the statement of “Our Institute is smarter than yours.” That one is just funny but the other is absurd.
At saying that, the game tonight should be a great game. I think Tech has the overall better team, but being that it is at UGA it balances it out well. Sorry, fellow SEC folks the ACC had a much better baseball league THIS year. Good luck to both.

AJC continues its bias against Tech and for Ugay. Tech won 3 regular season games against ugay - and the ajc gave very little press.
Tech won every game in the regional with the exception of this one game…. and very little press.
Ugay loses to a NOBODY in the regional…. and very little press.
Ugay wins one game yesterday against Tech and it earns articles and opinions and etc.
Go figure.
If Ugay wins today, expect a front page article. If Tech wins today, expect a 2 paragraph article on page 7 of the sports section - and thats it.

I hardly think, Nerd Fans, that Florida has UGA’s number when we beat them 2 of the last 4 games.
Try beating us yourselves instead of living your worthless life through who you think has our number.
We have Tech’s.
It’s -0-

Let me know when some “student-athlete” at UGA dies of heroin overdose.
Tech fans, you are a total joke that your “counseling session” is a punishment for your drugged out “student-athletes.” Or that it is working according to your own Tech fans here on these blogs here on the AJ-C since it was announced Friday morning that the cause of death is now officially heroin overdose.
You need to suspend your “student-athletes” as we do at UGA instead of this COVER-UP TECH CONTINUES and then maybe, just maybe, you might have a better APR for your football players and your basketball players.
As it is, you are on the wrong side looking in telling us that our players are the problem and not yours such as Reuben Houston and Michael Hutts, Isenhour, and Joey Hamilton.

Thanks, San Diego Jacket, that was really a classy post you made this afternoon. To wish that “someone rot in hell” is really “gutter” language. Just because we have a jerk of a poster in BuLLdawg, you are venting just as much venom with your remarks. I am glad that you are in San Diego as I would not like to think that someone in Georgia really does have that kind of hate balled up inside of them. Talk about lack of class, you just topped the list with that post!!

It’s kind of hard to think poorly of the other teams’ fans when our team’s posters put in such crap as the above. UGA has its Bulldawg and we seem to have some similar guys. No body seems to have a monopoly on class, or the lack of such. Love your team, but keep it at an adult level. Maybe that’s asking too much.

Looks like it may turn out to be a pretty good baseball game. It’s a shame someone has to lose. I wish both teams can make it to the CWS.

8 combined runs 7 combined hits and 1 error in the first frame. It looks like it’s going to be one of those nights. I’m glad my team hits last.

Carolina Jacket, once again I concur with your post! I think trying to keep it on an adult level is a bit much for most of your and my posters! I truly believe that most of the “junk” is coming from the “younger set”, and asking for “class” is too much to ask of them! Good, clean ,:old fashioned hate” went by the wayside years ago!! And, yes, BullDawg sets the bar for class—Low that is!!

Oh TDawg its eating you alive isn’t it? The envy, the jelousy the gnawing ache to finally be able to say you and your “team” bested UGA on the field. Ah but as per usual for you and your choking group you have gagged on UGA and the bile spills forth. Take a deep breath, count to ten and just accept it. Then get your a* busy and fix the printer because I’m betting that is all you’re really qualified to do. Not that there’s anything wrong with that. LOSER!

I observed the lads from Georgia played the game exactly as I envisioned. The poor chaps from Georgia Choke…not so much. What’s the other sport you play, football? I’m sure the Chokers play this game much better…no 6 errors, right. Say they’ve lost SEVEN ina row to mighty Georgia? Not so good either. Oh, well, back to my museum…

What amazes me is that there are so many posts by the 2 Tech fans using different handles. Not that they think only the national press can point out the heroin overdose of Michael Hutts, while they tell me they want to ignore it happened.

Georgia Tech has never beat UGA at Foley Field in an NCAA Tournament Game.
Tech drops to a .533 winning percentage in NCAA Tournament play at 56-49. Not very good.
347 games Tech has played UGA in Baseball.
195-149-2 Georgia Diamond Dawgs own Georgia Tech in Baseball, and always have.
3,518 in attendance.
18 runs the most runs Georgia Tech gave up all season.
Tech’s season ends again, at the hands of UGA.
Zach von Tersch pitched one (1) inning, as I told you he isn’t a good pitcher.
I specifically mentioned his errors.
I told you he gives up more hits than innings pitched.
I told you we would steal on Tech with him on the mound.
Tech could not muster any extra base hits.
UGA pasted Tech with 18 hits and got 6 extra outs on six (6) Tech errors.
Georgia routed Tech 18-6.

5 in a row now NCAA Tournament Games, UGA Diamond Dawgs have beat Georgia Tech NERDS. So, what again is that Georgia Tech fans (both of them) have to brag about ?
I missed that.
UGA now faces North Carolina State, who like Georgia Tech have a SoS of Number 68.
UGA hosts the Super Regionals at Foley Field in Athens in a 2 of 3 starting Friday.
A victory by UGA over NC State will put UGA in the College World Series for the 3rd time in the last 5 years. Tech has only been to the CWS 3 times ever.
15-0 in elimination games at Foley Field, 2008 SEC Champion Georgia Bulldogs, advance.
” Georgia Tech (41-21) ended a difficult year that included the heroin-related death of pitcher Michael Hutts on April 11. “
http://govolsxtra.com/news/2008/jun/02/georgia-routs-tech-for-super-regional-berth/
Maybe Tech fans like it better if I quote the national media about Michael Hutts tonight as the stories come in ?

Good job DAWGS, sorry to the jacket fans, both teams deserve to go.
And on a lighter side……
A teacher was reading the Three Little Pigs to a class of 2nd graders. “And then the first little pig went up to a man with a wheelbarrow full of straw and said, “Pardon me sir, may I have some of your straw to build my house with?”
She asked the class, “And what do you think the man said next?”
A little boy raised his hand, “I think the man said, “Well fvck me! A talkin pig!”
You guys have a great day.

Georgia Tech did not deserve to go. Tech ended a difficult year that included the heroin overdose death of pitcher Michael Hutts. His roommate was not allowed to talk to the press or to play again after his death, but did say before the press ban that he had a known drug problem. Michael Hutts’ father also said that it was known that his son was experimenting with heroin. At Tech though, all they do is have a counseling session with Tech drug users. No suspension. No formal punishment by Georgia Tech for drug users, at all. Instead, Tech covers it up, and their fans (both of them) say in here, it cannot be discussed either. In addition, Tech played a soft schedule, lost its 5 in a row NCAA Tournament Game to UGA, and was destroyed by UGA just when their fans came in here and said all kinds of nasty stuff about UGA not deserving the national seed and how much better Tech is in baseball.
Tech is not, and never has been with but 3 CWS appearances only - while UGA if we beat NC State will be in the CWS for the 3rd time in the last 5 years alone.
Not to mention the 46-game advantage UGA enjoys over Tech in Baseball All-Time.
46 games better than Tech.
Oh, yeah.
Georgia Tech is better at baseball.

Remembering back to the smack earlier this week, there was one team in Athens that didn’t deserve to host a regional, that didn’t deserve to be a national seed, that didn’t have great pitching, that didn’t, didn’t, didn’t… Turns out it was all true. That team is now back in Atlanta.
