The Tuesday Countdown
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
10: Joe Horn signed an $18.5 million contract. He must be paid by the word.
9: I was standing on the sideline at Falcons minicamp Monday when I heard Horn grousing about his lack of action. Moments later, he told our Steve Wyche he wanted to be traded. It was his most productive day as a Falcon.
8: Horn will rank as one the franchise’s worst free agent signings ever. He had 27 catches last season. That’s 27 more than he’ll have this season because my guess is the Falcons will punt the guy before training camp. He’s right about not being a significant part of the game plan, but he’s wrong in thinking he should be. He’s got a starter’s ego but an old man’s legs. The Saints were smart to dump him when they did. The Falcons gave him $7.5 million in guarantees in the first two seasons. No guarantees back the other way.
7: Just went to the AJC.com cover page. There’s a link to a “Dress Carrie” page. Look, if we’re just going to throw journalism into a food processor and come out with something like this, that’s fine. But I’m making a few changes. In my game, it ain’t Sarah Jessica Parker, and it sure ain’t dressing.
6: O.J. Mayo has denied taking gifts at USC. Really, it was more like salary and incentive bonuses.
5: These allegations against Mayo come on the heels of Reggie Bush’s parents supposedly living in a home rent-free — among other “benefits” — while he was at USC. If the Trojans skate, it’s the NCAA that should be investigated. If this was Alabama, Auburn or any school in the SEC, we’d all be screaming.
4: The Celtics, who lost 10 regular season road games all year, are 0-5 on the road in the playoffs. It doesn’t mean they can’t win the NBA title. But this isn’t a team for the ages. Aged, maybe.
3: I was hoping to weigh in on “Spygate” before being wrapped up this week’s countdown. But Goodell and Walsh must be taking in a double feature.
2: SI.com and ESPN.com have both listed the Falcons No. 32 in their power rankings, which means, of course, nothing. But I figured it would be nice to give coach Mike Smith equal time. So I asked him where his team should rank. “That’s a loaded question,” he said. His answer: no so loaded. “Somebody’s gotta be ranked No. 1 and somebody’s gotta be ranked at the bottom. It’s not where you start, it’s where you end up.”
1: Question for Joe Horn: After the Saints and the Falcons tell you that you’re not good enough, where can you turn?

Mayo and Bush may have taken money, huh? Too bad the Trojans are operating at a deficit and their Athletic Department cares more about academics than athletics and will probably shut down. Wouldn’t you agree Jeff?

I think Jeff reads my mind… I’m glad Joe Horn was here to ease us out of our Michael Vick “experience.”
Here’s to hoping Finneran can make a comeback. And why does all of Atlanta think DJ should be the QB this season??? Maybe it spawns from all of his pro experience and his ONE year as a starter at UG-GAY. Ryan already has more experience than DJ and he hasn’t even taken an NFL snap!
Thanks for keeping it real Jeff. So what do ya have to do to get Terrance Moore fired around here anyways?

Good luck to Finneran on his return. As for Horn, what a clown. A man who has accomplished nothing in the league. He says he won’t sit behind the young guys, but at the same time says he wants to go somewhere to mentor some young WR’s? He could have done that here but his delicate little feelings are hurt b/c he took three snaps in a minicamp. What a jerk. Expunge all the jerks like Horn and move on with players that are ready to show their stuff. This is the moron who held up a Vick poster at the Ga. Dome. Smart.

How did USC get away with all that Bush stuff?
Are you going to tell me that the school didn’t notice his parents showing up all over the country and staying at the nicest hotels on civil servant’s pay?
And now add a little Mayo and you have a
Bush and Mayo cheaters sandwich.
UMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM!

Joe Horn blows!
The Falcons are rated 32nd in the league because that is all the teams that are in the league.

Hey John Madden, what are you - like, 12? Tight End to Wide Receiver (slapping knee as we speak)Haha, how original … in 1982.
Let’s at least give Horn credit for this: he endured an entire season with Petrino as head coach and we didn’t hear a peep out of him. Perhaps we could even credit him with some of Roddy White’s advancement??
Also, it is totally unfair that only the universitites are penalized for idiots like Mayo. 17 and 18 yr-olds know d@mn well what they are allowed and not allowed to do, and Mayo should be held accountable. I guarantee you if the penalty for accepting gifts/money in college was to forfeit your first year of NFL eligibility we would suddenly see much less iof that foolishness.

I don’t know Jeff, I have to disagree with you about Joe Horn. I think the guy can still be utilized, but was never allowed to play when Petrino was there. I unlike TO and other prima donnas who p** and moan about not getting the ball and overinflate their worth to the team, I think Horn makes some valid points. He realizes that he isn’t going to be the top guy at his age, but he can still be an effective 3rd down receiver. But if the Falcons aren’t going to use him, then I don’t think it’s unfair for him to demand a trade. I mean he said that he respects Blank, and has nothing against the new coaching staff. He just wants to play, and I think he should be allowed to have a say in his future.

formerly Lowcountry Bulldawg, USC deserves the Death Penalty. To many ego’s in Caroll and Floyd. Each have coached the pro’s and each think they are above reproach. Look at Joe McKnight, already flunking out. Now O.J. Mayo, the kid with the flat screen tv in the 250sf dorm. Please! SMU was made an example out of and now lets cut the heads off of big time college athletics and give USC the death penalty.

USC got away with the Bush stuff because they cannot make thefamily testify! The NCAA is not the federal government! They can only advise and strongfully encourge. It is obvious that Bush at some point will give the trophy back and the university will forfiet the wins. At some point the NCAA has to grow some teeth.
Thats why USC deserves the DEATH PENELTY!

ATLplayer… Who wants what we got when VICK got himself locked up? I guess the fans of 30+ years of the Falcons have no right to be upset. We should still support Vick even though he is in jail. Why? Explain how this is the casual fan’s fault. I may not have thought he was a great QB, but I enjoyed watching him play. He got himself locked up. He flipped the fans off. He was stopped in Miami, not the fans. We just love the team. By the way, not everything about this team revolves around Vick. I still support the Falcons, so I guess that I am a “Hater.” Whatever

I figured I’d help you Vick haters out…your feeling towards VICK are to dislike intensely or passionately; feel extreme aversion for or extreme hostility toward; detest: to hate the enemy; to hate bigotry. You’re a person that simply cannot be happy for another person’s success. So rather than be happy YOU make a point of exposing a flaw in that person. Hating, the result of being a hater, is not exactly jealousy. The hater doesnt really want to be the person he or she hates, rather the hater wants to knock somelse down a notch.

Jeff, you are the best sports columnist this sad sack newspaper has by far! You are hilarious but usually dead on. Joe Horn is an idiot, always has been except he used to be a younger productive idiot. Now, he’s just an idiot. Finn may be older, coming back from a devastating injury and may not make the team but he knows when to keep his mouth shut! Love ya Finn!!

Even though MVick is gone, never to return, the same racist mentalities that hated Vick are still here. You see, it’s like taking a crap and forgetting to flush. You may be gone, but the crap and its accompanying stench are still there. That’s what these clowns represent. Rather sad isn’t it.
As far as Joe Horn is concerned, I think most people either discount or are too stupid to appreciate how much our young WR’s improved because of his example and hands on tutelage. That’s why he was signed in the 1st place, and in that area, he was successful. What was once our major OFF weakness, became our major OFF strength. Until Joe Horn was signed and worked his magic, our WR’s either led the NFL in dropped passes, especially TD passes, or were near the top.
The problem is, he did such a good job of mentoring our young WR’s that he dropped himself to the bottom of the depth chart. He has a lot of pride and wants to go out a winner. Only a jaded fool would criticize a competitor for wanting to end his career on a positive note. Good luck to you Joe Horn.

“Isn’t it time for all Falcon fans to stop linking Vick to how we view everything?” Yes it is…now that didn’t come from a hater. That’s a reasonable question. Vick is gone and won’t be coming back to the Falcons. I don’t know why they haven’t cut him yet. Matt Ryan is the new whipping boy.

Where would Joe Horn go?? Why do you have to ask!? Everyone knows Joe would go to the Oakland Raiders because they think that they have a “new formula” for wining. It’s 1/3 “vet” Oakland players, 1/3 “rookies” and 1/3 “former” Atlanta Falcon players!! :)

For all the people in Atl hating on Joe Horn remember that you guys didnt even have a line that could give enough protection or a QB who could stay off his a** long enough to get him the ball. Did you guys also forget how many times he torched yall when he was in New Orleans. You guys also dont know him as a person. This man single handly saved a team from moving to San Antonio.I understand Atlanta is desperate for a winner since the Hawks couldnt do it but before you guys pass judgement sweep around your own front door then ask yourself what have you done on or off the field to make the Falcons better. What!!! Dont worry I’ll wait.

If a tree falls in the woods….
If Joe Horn was released or traded, would anyone really care?
I don’t know how anyone can try to blame USC for what’s going on with OJ Mayo. We’re not talking about a kid getting money or favors from a coach/staff/booster related to USC as an incentive to attend USC. We’re talking about a kid taking money or favors from an agency for future considerations when the kid turns pro. Alabama got in trouble for one of their school boosters helping recruit a kid with treasure. The OK QB had a job he didn’t have to show up for from an OK alumni. That’s why they were reprimanded. USC can’t help that Mayo took money from an agent anymore than UGA can help it that (insert any name here) got arrested for being an idiot. They can help what they do with these kids AFTER they find out. But in this case Mayo is off to the NBA and it’s too late. Mayo and the agent are at fault here, not the school.
By Dr. Warren

Take it from a former Trojan faculty member: USC DOES care far more about academics than athletics. The school this year ranked among the 18 most selective universities in the country—and that includes the Ivy League, Stanford, Chicago, and Duke. The average SAT for admitted students is near 1400. Steve Sample, perhaps the most respected University president in the nation, will not stand for foolishness. Believe me when I say he would give both programs the death penalty if he found anything untoward. With a $2 billion endowment, they could function without football revenue for a long, long time.
By Mr. Know-it-all
May 14, 2008 4:16 PM | Link to this
Uh… Dr. Warren…. how much of that annual endowment do you think has no connection whatsoever to the athletics program. Don’t lie to yourself. Although I haven’t looked it up, I have to believe the ranking of the university and its endowment have both grown considerably since the arrival of Pete Carroll.
President Sample may be a well respected university president, but giving the programs the death penalty would make his a much less well respected president.
