Bald truth: Hawks still struggling

THE TUESDAY COUNTDOWN…

10: In hopes of inspiring his players to victory, Hawks coach Mike Woodson shaved his head before the start of the playoff series against Boston. Question: Wouldn’t designing a half-court offense have been more productive?

9: Here’s some Atlanta Spirit kismet for you: The Hawks finally make it to the playoffs and their first two games are in Boston — the ownership base of Steve Belkin, who remains locked in litigation with, well, the non-Belkins (it’s easier than listing all of the other names).

8: In hopes of inspiring his partners to victory in court, Bruce Levenson just shaved his head. Once again, a well-designed offense would’ve been better.

7: I’m hearing radio commercials advertising tickets available for Games 3 and 4 at Philips Arena. Not a good sign - unless you’re from Newton.

6: If you believe it’s a monumental achievement that John Smoltz is about to hit 3,000 strikeouts, consider how many he would have if he wasn’t a closer for three seasons.

5: I remain skeptical of Georgia State’s hopes of building a successful football program, given it has not been able to do the same with its basketball program (a cheaper and less-daunting endeavor). That said …

4: E-mailer Omar O. has a pretty cool idea: “I noticed that the Dawgs have not got an opener for 2010. Georgia State’s first game should be in Athens. It would make all the sense in the world. Do you agree?” Yes, I do. While it sounds strange, Georgia State would gain more attention losing — even by a lopsided score — to the most followed sports team in the Atlanta area than winning a game over a low-profile opponent.

3: Dept. of Spin: A Coca-Cola spokesman said the decision to pull its sponsored float out of the torch relay in Japan was related to security, not politics. Reality: It’s unrelated to either. Product placement is all about image (and sales). I ain’t no expert, but I’m guessing it’s hard to float campaigns like “a Coke and a smile” when protesters are tackling torch runners in the background.

2: Don Waddell says the Thrashers are “a couple of players away” from being a competitor. And I agree: Sidney Crosby and Nicklas Lidstrom. Other than that, I would say the team is one general manager away.

1: Kevin Garnett shaves his head. Seems to work for better for him.

Why do you keep ripping the Hawks at every turn? Figures, they finally have something to be happy about (making the playoffs) and you line up to see how big of a crap you can take on it.

This is the only sports city I have ever seen that will not rally behind the home team. And save the “I just call it like I see it” BS. You simply do not like the the management of the team and now that they are turning things around all you can do to save face is rip them for probably losing a series to Boston. M

okay, i had your back with the last column, jeff. you were right, no reason for optimism. but now you’re just beating a dead horse, and it’s more than obvious that you’re ust taking your personal vandetta against woodson out on your readers, which is both unprofessional and immature.

just let the hawks get swept on their own, there is no reason to rub it in each and every step of the way.

Jeff is not paid to be a cheerleader for Atlanta sports teams — what will it take for you folks to get that through your thick skulls? Fact of the matter is that he’s right. The Hawks have absolutely ZERO chance of winning this series, and about a 10% chance of even taking a single game. What’s wrong with pointing that out? Every significant member of the Hawks’ so-called “leadership,” from Belkin to the 9-headed Anti-Spirit Group monster to Knight to Woodson, has failed to put together a team that can compete with the upper echelons of the Eastern Conference, much less the rest of the NBA. If the Hawks were in the West, we would’ve been eliminated from the playoffs sometime around Christmas. Sneaking in at 7 games under .500 in the weakest conference in league history does not give me the warm fuzzies and make me think this team is headed in the right direction.

Want to see what a well managed team can do? Look at Philly. The Hawks have better talent at nearly every position, and the rebuilding Sixers are head & shoulders better than us already, despite jettisoning Iverson to start from scratch. Take off the rose-colored glasses for just a few minutes and accept the fact that you’ve been hoodwinked. I’ll root for the Hawks until I’m blue in the face, but that won’t stop me from understanding that they’re a total mess and need serious help this offseason.

Larry Brown, are you listening?

Jeff, Give the Hawaks (players i.e.) some props. I am not saying you should be a blind supporter of them or something. At least, please do not indulge in bludgeoning them, just after one game.

If your sort of attitude persisted, Man would never ever have explored continents on ships, made the aeroplane, walked on the moon, invented electricity, etc etc

I am hoping that the Hawks will play their hearts out and prove crummy journos like you wrong!! What is this business with the AJC and hating teh very town that you make a living in??!!! You guys p*ss me off, man. Come on. Show some love and shave your head too!

Keep it up Schultz. Pressure must be applied to this bleeding wound of a franchise that is the Hawks. Billy, Woody and ASG all need to be flushed for there to be any longterm hope. Miraculously, he roster’s nearly OK. But the leadership(?) really stinks.

This is just like any other sports editorial I have read from the AJC. We all know their MO. What you fail to realize just like Terrence Moore is that sports at the Collegiate Level do not have a basic goal of exploitation to the general public as a whole.

Let me explain… WE DO NOT WANT A FOOTBALL TEAM AT GEORGIA STATE SO YOU CAN WRITE ABOUT IT. WE WANT IT FOR US! ME and a couple of other guys at Georgia State want to be able to play football and go to a good academic school (at least for business). We want to play football at the college level just like every other major university in the United States.

So, why don’t you try and stop knocking down Georgia State Football until you get on campus there (which you probably never have) and see what the students want out of it. It is a school pride thing and not some stupid AJC exploitation.

Dr. Tobias, your comments were on point until you went the Larry Brown route. Anyone who asks for that clown to come coach the Hawks deserves to have the Funke slapped out of them. He hates young, immature players and he’s too quick to blame everyone but himself. Atlanta doesn’t need that.

People get sick of watching the Spurs win every year, but there’s a reason they are always playing into June, and that’s because they have the one thing the Hawks don’t: discipline. Same with Utah, who relies on discipline and execution while not allowing anyone to change their game plan.

Philadelphia is like that too, which is why they will have a chance against Detroit in their first round series.

Atlanta has no discipline, and they play just like the Rockets and Wizards, two over emotional teams who have no idea how to stick to their game plan when punched in the face.

Tell you what…I’ll play the role of Sunshine Jeff, whose sole purpose in life is to write only positive articles about Atlanta sports teams.

“Hey, Hawks fans! Did you see the incredible effort our guys put out on Sunday night in their first nationally televised game since the Clinton era? Wow! That was great! These guys can beat anyone! Gooooooo Woody! Billy Knight for Executive of the Year!”

Feel better now?

Dan, well who would you suggest???Carlisle wasn’t “run” out of Detroit. He took them to the conference finals and was let go when Detroit caught wind of him sniffing the Indiana job. Larry Brown came in, like Pat Riley for Stan Van Gundy in Miami, and took Detroit to the title with Carlisle’s bunch the very next year. Carlisle must know something considering that he was hired by Joe Dumars in Detroit and Donnie Walsh in Indiana. I trust those guys when it comes to basketball coaches. I guess you want Larry Brown for the job. Carlisle is a good coach.

First year back in the play-offs in almost a decade. Fine young, talented players still possessing plenty of potential.

An owner-ship group mired in difficulty, but there’s no evidence that they arn’t ready to commit to exploiting the potential of the team.

A GM who people love to hate, but he’s the one that’s been able to put this group together and keep a nice cap situation. Missed picks are not limited to BK.

Woodson will only get my support if he get’s this team to the finals. I’m totally convinced that he is neither a teacher nor a genius. Both are very helpful qualities to succeed as a head coach in the NBA.

Ryder got it right about the team’s lack of discipline. I’d include lack of toughness as well. Zaza is 280lbs of sissy. Horford has it all. Smoove likes to play to the SF role too much. Marvin’s a big boy but also plays to the SF role. At least he has a SF game. Smoove needs to keep it inside and dominate.

The Hawks should toughen up as a group next season. Even with the modest moves predicted this summer, we should see an improved team next season.

In the meantime it would be nice to speed itup and play a bit more physical and kick some Celtics butt.

Davenpoop Where do we send your MVP trophy?

You Jeff Schultz apologists keep crying at our attacks on the fraud, that we want some “homers” and “polyannas.” That is not the case, we want fairness. People can take criticism when it is applied in that manner.

Schultz, “Bernie,” the OSU Beaver called and said to “stop trying to kill my swerve!” “The Comb-over” is a fraud!

Carlisle this, Carlisle that, he was jettisoned from the then hardest working team in the NBA… The fool was chasing greener pastures and Dumars sent his butt packing. Larry Brown is shell of a man, what does resonant with some of you? “Larry Vagabond” is done!

The comb-over speaks, sold by bow-tied dweebs in Alpharetta and Snellville. Hey Schultz, take that Hair Club for Men client John Kincade with you to Fire Island this summer

Shultz I really wish the AJC would get rid of you! You’re bashing of every sports team is uncalled for. I’m sure that everyone basically knows that the Hawks don’t stand a chance against the Celtics, but you don’t have to keep putting them down every 5 minutes. YOU ARE THE REASON WHY I PURCHASED A PLAYOFF TICKET FOR ONE OF NEXT WEEKS HOME GAMES. I WANT TO SUPPORT THE HAWKS FOR THEIR ACCOMPLISHMENTS, NOT BEAT THEM DOWN!!

By Najeh Davenpoop

I don’t even mind having columnists that are perpetually negative. I only mind the fact that Jeff Schultz provides no more insight than any random person posting on this blog. He doesn’t ever say why the Hawks (or anyone else) suck, because he doesn’t know — instead he tries to cover up his lack of sports knowledge by making lame jokes. Even if his jokes were funny every once in a while I wouldn’t have a problem. That doesn’t apply to just this article, it applies to every article he writes. At least Bradley and Moore, as average as they are, occasionally write columns that say something useful. Just saying “Mike Woodson sucks, the Celtics are gonna drill the Hawks, heh heh heh” shouldn’t authorize you to write a column. Sekou Smith is a beat writer, who is also regularly critical of the Hawks organization, and he could write a better opinion column than Schultz 25 hours a day, 8 days a week, and 367 days a year.

ms. tobius funke,

you are missing the point. i realize schultz is entitled to his own opinion and is not supposed to be a hawks cheerleader. the point is he already wrote this column last week, but now he’s re-writing it to beat a dead horse. that’s pathetic.

he said his piece last week, why does he have to keep coming back after every hawks loss just to say “hey, i was right.” no shyte, woodson’s probably the worst coach in the league, hands down. but leave the man alone already.

The Hawks made the playoffs because they were in the worse of the two conferences. They finished under .500. Sure, baby steps, but this just means they were kinda near the middle of the NBA pack. Whoop-de-doo!

As for the UGA 2010 opener, sounds good to me to open with Georgia State. We need a tougher in-state opponent than Georgia Tech on our schedule.

What a fan you are! What are your expectations? A young team that makes it first playoff appearance in almost 10 years. They are up against the best team in the league, playing on the road. Give them a break. If anything, you should support this team! They are making strides in the right direction. I bought my tickets and I will be there for game 4. The Celtics are going to sweep whatever team is in the # 8 slot in the east. Just so happens to be the Hawks. Face it. Why blame Jeff for stating the obvious?

The Hawks will suffer as long as the ownership mess continues. You need money to win big in the NBA. Atlanta Spirit is spending too much money on lawyers and are spinning their wheels when it comes to Woody and BK. Did you see Chris Paul in last night’s game against Dallas? 32 points, 17 assists, 5 rebounds, 3 steals. I wonder if BK saw it?
