A ranking of the teams that consume us
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
In the past several months, Atlanta sports fans have witnessed the firings, scorched-earth reassignments or sudden exits of three coaches and three executives, which is a remarkable achievement considering the Hawks’ season hasn’t even ended yet and the Thrashers’ general manager isn’t going anywhere (except, of course, the draft lottery).
If you’re wondering why the masses are counting down to Opening Day and already getting lost in 2009 BCS dreams, it’s because the landscape otherwise looks like desert. For that reason, we submit our inaugural rankings of the eight area sports teams that most consume our thoughts. Should indoor football or women’s basketball unexpectedly raise a pulse in the coming months, we’ll adjust to a top 10 next year.
Until then, the countdown begins at …
8. THRASHERS
Before being hired in 1998, Don Waddell made his mark building minor-league organizations in San Diego and Orlando. The problem: He’s still building minor-league organizations. Other than retaining Ilya Kovalchuk (for now), the Thrashers fail in every conceivable category: ownership (Bruce Levenson, the “hockey guy” in the Atlanta Spirit group, has fumbled in management and public relations), roster building, player development, coaching, franchise stability, direction and fan development. The worst news isn’t that things are bad now, but that there’s no reason to believe they’ll get better any time soon. Oh, and ticket prices just went up.
7. GEORGIA BASKETBALL
Now that we’re past Euphoria Weekend, a question: was the SEC tournament a jumpstart or an aberration? Coach Dennis Felton deserved to return for another season regardless of last week. But one improbable run doesn’t discount that the program had significant issues. If Felton’s players don’t go to tutoring sessions or they obliterate the conduct code, that’s on him, not athletics department policies or the result of a Jim Harrick hangover. If fan support doesn’t increase, it’s at least partly because Felton needs to throw himself into more pep rallies. But if Felton’s players suddenly are tuning him in and this recruiting class is as good as he thinks, they won’t need any more miracles.
6. GEORGIA TECH BASKETBALL
Four years ago, the Yellow Jackets reached the national finals. The fact that it wasn’t the start of something big doesn’t mean Paul Hewitt can’t coach or recruit. But it does mean he has failed to accomplish the one thing we presumed was a lock: building a consistent, winning program. Never mind going to the Final Four once in a while. The Jackets lost to UNC-Greensboro and Winthrop in the first 10 days of this season. They are 27-37 in the ACC with one NCAA tournament win in the past four seasons. Not good enough. Hewitt, notwithstanding his oversensitivity to criticism, certainly knows it. We’ve seen his upside. But the upside is collecting dust.
5. HAWKS
Here’s the dichotomy: The Hawks have a good starting five and a solid bench. But it’s almost like having nice oriental rugs under a leaky roof. Players can’t win if they’re poorly coached (Mike Woodson). Since GM Billy Knight dragged his feet in getting a point guard, he needs to draw some blame for this playoff scramble and the team being slow to gel. Knight’s also the one who hired Woodson, only to decide belatedly to fire him, only to be shot down by owners. Who will be in power after this season - and what gives you confidence the right decisions (starting with Smith’s contract) will be made? Until then: wet rugs.
4. GEORGIA TECH FOOTBALL
Ran into Paul Johnson at the airport the other day. Saw him charm a Georgia fan, who then wished Johnson good luck this fall (other than in the season finale). So there’s one step up the mountain. Credit athletics director Dan Radakovich for trying to shake up a sleepy athletics department and apathetic fan base. His decision to fire Chan Gailey probably had more to do with that than seven-win seasons. But Johnson still has to prove he can: 1) recruit in a major conference; 2) win with his triple-option offense in the ACC; 3) excite the masses. If he can do the first two, the third will follow.
3. FALCONS
I know: Why so high? Thomas Dimitroff gets a blank slate. In this town, the unknown trumps the known of others. An NFL team can change its fortunes quickly if it makes the right moves, and Dimitroff’s off to a good start. He has trimmed payroll, dumped gimpy veterans and malcontents and stockpiled draft picks. He signed running back Michael Turner. Six wins next season would be an accomplishment. But Dimitroff seems like he knows what he’s doing. The big unknowns: the quality of the draft picks, the head coaching abilities of Mike Smith and the ability of owner Arthur Blank to actually let his football people make football decisions.
2. BRAVES
They’ve had a longer run of success than any other Atlanta sports entity, even with missing the playoffs the past two years. This season, either the starting rotation explodes or they’re in the World Series. But they’re in the conversation again. John Schuerholz-to-Frank Wren has been a relatively seamless transition. Bobby Cox: still here. The lineup: Chipper Jones-Mark Teixeira-Jeff Francoeur-Brian McCann hitting 3-4-5-6. The operation: Still a model for anybody looking to start a franchise. If there’s one question, it’s ownership’s payroll limitations that could submarine the chances of re-signing Teixeira.
1. GEORGIA FOOTBALL
Yes, preseason projections have mutated beyond even the usual absurd Georgia standards. I believe AJC.com now has a rule that we must have at least a five-inch blog every time somebody burps in Butts-Mehre Hall. That said, this program has no flaws right now. The Dogs are north of everybody in money, fans, stability and direction. Mark Richt, who always had the ability to recruit, last year became a better coach. Gauge the program this way: It’s not merely that this year’s Bulldogs will be in the national-title hunt, but that it’s difficult to project when they won’t be. They stand alone.

Many of us were discussing at a recent party the trashy, sleezy looking athletes who have “low rent” plastered all over them by way of tattoos. It would be nice to see a coach make the idiots cover them up before they could play.

You said it, Jeff. Not just for UGA fans, but college football fans across the country anticipate the beginning of their season like no other. The hype and focus on EVERYTHING (witness the recruiting circus and Spring scrimmages) having to do with college football is incredible. I’m salivating for September as we speak.

Jeff,
Anything you can to do gig the Thrashers, “Hey, I know, I’ll come up with a column that ranks interest of all the sports teams around and leave them last.” Now, Jeff, I’m like everybody else…I could care less about the Thrashers, but since Day One you seem th have been on a mission to run them back to Canada. When they got here, they couldn’t believe they drew you as their beat writer, and the relationship has been bitter ever since. Your brand of humor (the Tennessee Vowels -what’s up with that) sarcasm, cynicism, negativity rubs e’body the wrong way.

Richt’s stunts during the last season constitute the poorest sportsmanship in college football since the Miami teams of the 80’s. Under Richt’s leadership, Georgia has maintained the lowest graduation rate and the highest arrest rate of any team in the conference, in spite of gains in the latter category by Alabama and Tennessee, and who paid Ellerbe’s $20,000 tab in fines and legal fees?

Besides Snoop’s North Avenue Trade School snippy attitude, Jeff’s column is right on point. Thrashers, ya okay, they have their moments but this is still a town built on college football and the Braves. I love college basketball(despite my horrible looking bracket) but UGA football, the Braves and I guess the yellow bugs football team will always be dominant. The falcons would easily be number two if the Vick fiasco didn’t turn out the way it did.

Hey Snoop, You do not have a clue. If you could spend just a few minutes with CMR you would have the same impression as all football fans have of this man. All fans, not just UGA fans. By the way CMR was motivating his team not exhibiting classlessness. Its sports not a garden party. It is supposed to be fun and exciting.

Wow, does Lynn sound like an old bitter racist? I’m not condoning what some of the Georgia players have done in the past, but most if not all were alcoholic rated, which again is dumb and stupid. But if you start comparing UGA and Florida State players together, then UGA players would of raped women(Buster Davis), shoplifted in a store and lose your Heisman(Peter Warrick),severe gambling problem(Adrian McPherson) and robbed and broken into your own teammate’s hosue(Doug Carr).
So if Lynn the bigot wants to make stupid, asinine comments like that because he/she is an old bitter Tech? fan, then so be it

Fox noise…you got ALL this info, and the best you can come up with is that UGA= “neckville”? Hmm UGA “Neckville” is amoung tops in the nation monetarily when it comes to athletics. Doesn’t sound like the butterbean fields are paying the bills to me? Maybe you are a Tech fan ,where athletes are ok’d to play after serving time for time for not only selling pot, but being a major player in the distribution of illegal and ilicit drugs! We’re talkin American Gangsta style! LOL! Love when people like you get on here, hiding behind a keyboard, and use words like “Redneck” when describing UGA fans! Nice try, but something tells me that when the money and SEC Titles are pooring in,….REDNECK has got nothing to do with it! But keep up the namecalling second grader.

Just passing through on the internet. Saw your blog. I am glad to see a southern all black college like UGA have a good football team finally. Reminds me of the great teams at Grambling. Hey, you guys have similar helmet logos. Guess it is an african american thing. I can see now why you guys hate Georgia Tech. All the white rich kids go there and the poorer kids go to UGA. That has never mixed well in public. That is similar with us with OK vs OK St. Hope you have a great season!! Beat the Yellow Jackets!! Score one for the black teams!!

Every College Program in the Nation has problems with Players from time to time. But, when a Program doesn’t win very much, no one notices. When you win a lot, everyone notices. When it is a major rival of your team that wins a lot and your are thinking Emerald Bowl in March for your team, you tend to spend more time on the other team’s Blog than your own.

To all you Muttlanders who think Tech fans are bitter, please don’t flatter yourselves. We are not bitter, we have lives outside of football. Do we want to be better? Yes.
As for the ranking, anytime you see the AUC (Atlanta Urinal and Constipation) pumping up the Leghumpers, you must know it’s all about selling newspapers.
The other thing one must remember is size of the fan base relative to the AJC’s catchment. You see, as it relates to Meto Atlanta, not everything is all about Muttland. However, Muttland’s fan base extends to the entire State of Georgia. The same applies to the Braves whose fan base is most of the Southeast.
As for Richt, he is morphing more and more into Bobby Bowden, his mentor. And I think that is a good thing. Since when you look at it, where is FSU now?
All good things must come to an end.

As it relates to Rueben Houston, that is the exception rather than the rule when it comes to Tech. He was arrested and Tech kicked him out of school. A judge allowed him back in school and if he had not been allowed to play, likely a judge would have been involved to make him play anyway.
But Muttland has cornered the market on Boys Going Wild, so it’s ludicrouse for you people to sound sanctified about it all.
And last year, you see the results when it comes to such actions actually sanctioned onto the football field, evan at the request of the head coach.
You people never cease to amaze me.

The UGA fans must have selective short memories. When someone mentions bad, thug athletes they like to bring up Houston at Tech. That is there only one. I guess they don’t remember the 5 to 7 that get arrested/suspended every year at UGA. This includeds teacher assaults, sex assaults, academic cheating, DUI, theft, vandalism, burglary, weapons chargers, and too much more to mention. Also they fail to see the thugs (except for Hines Ward) they send into the NFL. Quite the track record. That is the one thing Richt learned at FSU was how to recruit the thugs. UGA has that down pat and has suspended more students for off the field issues than any other SEC team in the last 5 years. Check the NCAA website for the article. It wouldn’t let me paste it here for some reason. Try coming up with something better than just the same guy for Tech. We have had some bad ones also, but not near as many as UGA. You definitly can have the honor of being number one in that regard.

You know I do not condone alcohol abuse by anyone adult or not, but let’s put things into perspective here. Many of these athletes are kids, 18-20 years old and some have never been away from home. Look at the situation right off campus whether it’s UGA, UF, or UT…all of these I am familiar with…Bras, bars, and more bars. These kids get away from home and all of a sudden partying looks good. Is it right? Heck no, but let’s try and help them get on track rather than run them down. We’ve all been there. As far as the remark about black athletes not being in college, as a white female, I find your remark very rascist, but mostly ignorant and I feel very sorry for you. There are always going to be some “people” regardless of color, who have a struggle with college and if athletics helps them earn a degree, that’s fine with me. I had a very difficult time with math and I thank God for tutors, otherwise I’d have never graduated.

There is plenty of speculation on the GA football program, dealing with Richt’s character & player suspensions. Envy is a sin, but let’s not forget every college football program has player run-ins with the law , so don’t act foolish even if you really are.
Secondly, people love to sterotype GA fans. I’m a yankee that loves my team. Oh wait I must be a redneck b/c I root for UGA.
So let’s stereotype, Tech’s fanbase consist of Indian descent, Chinese people, with a small influx of caucasians. They love to drink latte’s and watch ‘The View’. They mostly enjoy taking apart thier computers only to repair them immediately. They really enjoy cat’s but really hate dogs because dogs have too much personality. How am I doing so far? Great, I knew I was good at this.
Remember Tech fans, you are doing a real good job at illustrating how far superior UGA is compared to GT. Let it go, you guys can’t compete, but atleast your idea of talking trash is pretty funny. ehh

I just have to say one thing.
“georgia is starting to resemble florida state of old with all of the off field stuff.”
What in god’s green earth are you people talking about with this crap? What off field “stuff”? Notice how specific allegations are few and far between. Its always general and vague. Its as if the haters pull it directly out of their backside. Oh wait, they did. If you are seriously this ruined by a college football program that you have to live in a fantasy world and make things up you need to get a life. Good grief.
The jealousy of all things UGA is reaching epic proportions. Some of you need to get out more. If there was more to life than football, as you claim, you wouldn’t be this clearly ruined by a football team. Its not going to get any better for you either. The sky is the limit for this Georgia program. Better switch to figure skating.

apparantly Tech nerds, I mean fans, let themselves forget their huge cheating scandal of a few years back. I’m sure you don’t remember it because football doesn’t hold as much weight for you as the last game of dungeons and dragons. Let’s also talk about your previous running back Tony Hollings and his academic suspensions. Remember Reggie Ball, and how he got kicked out of school as a senior, that’s a great team leader. Also the only realson that UGA might have more suspensions that other folks is because Richt actually does something when the kids get caught or arrested. Look around at Urban Liar at UF and other places at how many kids they lets off the hook or handle the punishment “in house”. Speaking of getting off the hook, let’s not forget about Tech. I love that tech fans try to bring down UGA’s program and Richt in anyways that they can. Especailly saying that his coaching tactics last year were classless. PLEASE, get a life and realize that motivation is a good thing, don’t be mad because you awesome coach couldn’t think about it. I think I can already see the 8th win in a row right in front of my face. The long road is just starting for you tech fans, Paul Johnson isn’t going to help out much so enjoy you false hopes until september rolls around.

When that was the case there was actually some intelligent observations being made. Of course, inane statements such as saying it is the coach’s responsibility to make college students go to class, etc. just leads the discussion toward more nonsense.

First, Let me address the racist comments on this blogs. Folks…it just does not belong here.Time to get your a*( I mean head) out of the Rebel flag.
Second, seems like most of Georgia’s criminal offenses involve beer drinking. I consumed mass quantities of brew. Last time I checked it was the same at ALL college campus.
UGA is #1.Now where’s my drink.

I got to this column awful late but I have to go to #7 first. Felton does need to throw himself into this program a whole lot more. A Sunday midnight TV show just isn’t enough face on this men’s basketball program. If Felton goes to the NCAA tournament on a yearly basis then after a couple of years maybe the TV show will be enough. But with that said the school needs to commit to a new building. I remember when Stegman was built and that was nearly 50 years ago. I saw some new things yesterday on TV that the players needed. A new lounge will help. A new coliseum and about 6 to 8 more wins during the season will help bring the fans in. That is unless Felton doesn’t hold up his end. If UGA men’s basketball isn’t better next year then it’s time for a change of coaches. #3 always interests me. But I believe the right moves were made. I questioned the Mora and Petrino moves when they were hired but the moves made this year are solid. Six wins may be all we see this year but it could be more. In the NFL the “not for long” senario goes both ways. A team can get well quick with the right moves and a few good bounces of the football. If we can keep Smith and Dimitroff happy then we can look forward to many seasons of great football. Both of them got where they are the “old fashoned” way by working their way up in their previous positions in great organizations. The draft will be interesting this year. With the Falcons getting over 8% of the first 48 picks it means a great beginning.

I’d say Jeff (Goatse) Schultz has it about right this time and I’m a Tech guy.
The one thing Goatse and I have in common is we’re too lazy to do any actual research for our blogs but I would think the Thrashers would rank ahead of Dogs basketball based on attendance, season tickets etc

The Thrashers have been failing as an organization. I wish it weren’t true. But it is what it is. It’s time for change. But will ownership override its business plan in favor of doing the things it’d take to retain its fanbase, and attract more hockey fans?
If Kovalchuk leaves in 2010, or is traded as part of an “asset salvaging mission,” fan interest in hockey will suffer in this town.

Hey M - I thought I would do you a favor and write your posting for the post 2010 season.
Paul Johnson is the worst coach in the history of the NCAA. He should NEVER have been hired. He should have been fired a long time ago. Dan Radakovich should rot in helle for hiring him. Thank God and Greyhound that both Johnson and Radakovich are gone. Haallllleeeeeedamloooyah.

I have been taken to task on this blog more than once for my style,or lack thereof, when posting. I am using spacing and capital letters. I hope you guys are happy! 8-Thrashers-I am part of the problem because I don’t care. 7-The Bulldog nation is part of Feltons problem because,They don’t care. 6-I wouldn’t have rated Tech basketball this low. The fan base is there,so is the makings of a good team. The Jackets will be back. 5-The Hawks problems can be easily fixed. Let’s start by replacing the front office and the owners. The Hawk’s draft choices and trades rival the Falcon’s for utter stupidity. The Hawks should be ranked with the thrashers. 4-Tech football has a new HC and renewed intrest. There is no way They should be ranked behind the Falcons. The Falcons are the most mis-managed team in NFL history! 3- The Falcons should be ranked behind Tech football and basketball, possibly behind UGA basketball. I have no confidence in Their front office and I believe all the draft choices will be wasted. Lewis Grizzard once wrote a piece entitled “Have You Seen This Man?”. It was about Falcons’ first round draft choices. That was years ago and nothing has changed. 2-The Braves will be back if Their pitching holds up. Let’s keep Our fingers crossed! 1-CMR has built a strong program and UGA should win a lot of games this year. Richt is in it for the long haul, and he has laid the foundation for a team to be successful for years to come. His coaching staff is stable, the Program has plenty of money,They recruit well, and Their facilities are being constantly upgraded. I hope They go to the BCSCG,but I think Their o line is still too young. Three Seniors on the o line will take a team further that three Sophmores, even if the Seniors have less talent. I like the fact that this program is built for the future, rather than having attitude that the future is now.

Jeff, Chip, Steve W., Carter and Mr CF……..who at the AJC to us veterans on here have to petition to bring back some sort of pay “blog” site? Any idiot with a computer can get on here and say anything. There is no edit button for stupid. I’m sick of all of the dam hate being thrown around. It’s not even about football anymore. It’s kid’s on a playground throwing insults. When it was a pay site, yeah, there were some very heated discussions but we kept each other in check. Now it’s just Katie bar the door.
It makes no sense whatsoever to bring race into any of these blogs. Yet you have people that just can’t help themselves. Is anyone at this paper reading any of this crap? I could string 10 cuss words in a row and you guys would print it. It doesn’t matter that it is not coherent at all, I guess it’s press for you guys. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve got a mouth like a sailor, but I’m smart enough not to come off like a bumbling idiot.
Please, please, please at least entertain the idea of having a pay site about UGA and Tech that we can go to so we don’t have to put up with this childish bullsh!t anymore.
We used to have some good tech folks come on the UGA sites and have some really good talks, but even they won’t come on here anymore. And I don’t blame them.

I got a laugh when I read that Mark Richt really cares about his players. He obviously cares about winning football games. If he really cared about his players his graduation rate would be 90%. UGA has a pathetic graduation rate even with a high percentage of players in laughable and totally non-academic JOCK degree programs like Recreation and Leisure Studies. Ma Ma, can I spend 40 thousand dollars and get a degree in R and L Studies at UGA? No way son, you better get an education.

Zeb, I agree 100%. The writers on this blog turn out some good work. I don’t always agree, for instance I thought the opinions of teams were a bit off in this piece and I tried to express my reasons in a logical way. Most of the posts are the same old “My schools great,Your school sucks crap” crap. The problem is not that many who post here have little knowledge concerning football,it is that they do not care to learn. So the insults continue. People,we have heard it all before. We are aware that the UGA players are thugs and that Their fans are rednecks. We know that Techies are nerds and Tech players are gay and love tickle piles. We know that Auburn and Clemson are “cow colleges” and that Their players can’t read and write. We are aware that UF fans wear jean shorts and sport mullet haircuts. We know that Meyer and Saban are cheats and liars and that S. Carolina has never and will never win the SEC. Did You notice that there is no mention of Vandy,Ole Miss or Duke? Nobody hates the losers. OBTW, Phil Fulmer is FAT!!!

You obviously have not been to a Force game. If you had then you’d have been adicted to this fast action, high paced game. Don’t bs me with the “no defense” cry. There’s more d in this game than is given credit for. It’s just a high scoring version we all know and love. I dare you to tell the players they’re not real atheletes. They hit, tackle, block, pass, catch, run…hmmm, sounds like real football to me. Don’t knock it until you’ve tried it. For a full season. Until you’ve done that then don’t even try to comment about it.

How do the Hawks wind up above the Thrashers? Come to think of it, how do the Hawks wind up above the Force? I would switch those two out easily. In fact I would drop both UGA basketball and the Hawks out of the list and replace them with the Georgia Force and Nascar. Not a team, but in the Atlanta sports landscape all you have to do is sit in rush hour to realize it consumes a lot more people (and bumpers and rear windshields) than any other team in the list.

Oldgold - looks like it’s going to be a long year for you. When the braves are doing well, they’re the talk of the town. When GT is on top of b-ball, they’re front page news. UGA had a great season last year and may do well this year so the media is jumping on the story. If your moniker is correct you’re wise and somewhat intelligent so do the math and deal with it. You should be smart enough to know that complaining about UGA coverage is exactly what makes us dawgs wag our tails.
