Ryan must prove he’s worth the money

First of all, the Falcons blew it, but not about making Matt Ryan an extremely rich young man on Tuesday before his first breath in an NFL game.

The Falcons blew it, because Ryan was the wrong pick at No. 3 overall in last month’s draft. When your situation at defensive tackle is as dreadful as the Falcons, and you have a chance to take the next Warren Sapp, you take him. Instead, the Falcons ignored Glenn Dorsey and grabbed Ryan, the quarterback with the fancy numbers at Boston College.

A lot of quarterbacks with fancy numbers in college have bombed as first-round draft picks. In recent years, MOST quarterbacks with fancy numbers in college have bombed as first-round draft picks.

It’s a wrap, though. The Falcons believe Ryan is the player who can move them from the Michael Vick mess to prominence on and off the field. Since that’s what the Falcons believe, they did the right thing by wasting no time in giving Ryan that six-year deal for $72 million and a guaranteed signing bonus of $34.75.

Essentially, the Falcons are saying that they want Ryan to start right now, and that they believe he can start right now. Since that’s what the Falcons believe, they had to sign the guy right now to get him acclimated to their offensive system way before training camp.

As for Ryan’s mighty payday from the Falcons, this is a free-market system that operates on the principle of supply and demand. If that’s what the Falcons believe Ryan is worth to them, then that’s exactly what he should get.

All Ryan has to do now is prove to the Falcons that they are justified in their various beliefs.

That’s the problem.

Will you never stop crying about the Falcons top draft pick, Terence? I do think that Dorsey has the potential to be a great player. I also feel that way about Ryan. You, sir, are showing a bias that, at this point is completely unfounded by fact. You already have enshrined Dorsey into the Hall of Fame and have Ryan decried as a total bust before either of the two have had a chance to play a single down in the NFL. That seems just a bit unfair to me.

Once again, a cheap shot hit and run with no quotes from any of the folks you criticize. What’d it take, 5 minutes to write? You get paid for this?

What football expertise do you have as a player to profess to know more than the men like Dimitroff and McKay who have been in the league for years?

You continue to disappoint. This is why people stop reading newspapers — poorly stated arguments with no quotes.

Nice to hear you talking up the Falcons and not dragging them through the mud…but…the season hasn’t started, therefore you have plenty of time to sharpen your pencil!!

I could not agree with you more about the wrong pick of Ryan. I agree Dorsey would have been the better pick, but as long as Blank owns the team, the Falcons will always be mediocre or worse.

I believe Mr. Moore has this one right! By the way, how much money to the Falcons have tied up in the QB spot? Anyone know?

Glenn Dorsey was dominant Terence in school but a Peyton Manning will be more effective for your football team than a Warren Sapp. Not saying that Dorsey could ever be as dominant as a pro like Sapp and not saying that Ryan will be a Manning. However, if both rookies end up being like both veterans then a guy who touches the ball on every offensive snap could be more effective in determining the outcome more than a dfensive tackle who will not play every defensive down. As for proving that he is worth every dime the Falcons are investing in him, how do you quantify that versus the rookie pay scale in this day and age?
I think the falcons did the right thing in drafting Matt and they did the right thing in getting the contract issues out of the way early.

I hope this guy does well. But he just reminds me so much of Alex Smith, the 49ers number one draft pick from a few years ago. Yes, Alex Smith was a fine college quarterback. Yes, Alex Smith was the “best” or at least top-rated quarterback available in the draft that year. But being the top-rated quarterback in a particular draft does not justify taking the player so early if it’s a reach. I guess we’ll all see soon enough if Matty Ice has what it takes to be a successful quarterback in this league. Because with this contract… he’s definitely starting sooner rather than later.

i sure hope this works out. i’m skeptical though. he may not make it past 6 games because we don’t have anyone to protect him. i think sam baker was a bigger reach than ryan at 3.

Everyone seems to forget that there have been a number of DT and Off. Linemen that have been 1st round busts. Forecasting Dorsey’s future in the NFL is just as uncertain as predicting Ryan’s success. Terrance is paid to give us opinions but frankly if he was so talented in evaluating NFL players he would be more than a hack opinion columnist for a second rate newspaper with a below average sports section. I tend to trust the judgment of the Falcons’ GM more than the rantings of a subpar columnist.

So the writer knows more than the General Manager and the coach. Maybe they hired the wrong guy and should have hired you. Get over it. The pick was made and Ryan is who we have. Quit looking backward and start looking ahead. Wreaks are caused by not keeping your eyes on the road ahead of you.

GO FALCONS!!!
