Immelman win was a fluke

Augusta — Stuff happens, even if you’re Tiger Woods. But he usually is immune to stuff. That’s why hole after hole on Sunday, with relentless wind gusts turning heavenly Augusta National into golfing purgatory on earth, everybody kept waiting for two things that never happened.

Let’s just say Woods somehow didn’t create enough ways to win the 72nd Masters, and Trevor Immelman somehow didn’t create enough ways to lose it. Both things were remarkable, especially when it comes to what was a toothless Tiger for most of the brisk afternoon, but both things mean nothing in the long run.

All Immelman did was become the latest nice story out of nowhere to wear a green jacket for likely the only time in his 28-year-old life. There are so many chapters to this story. He spent last year’s Masters munching only on toast during the four days courtesy of a stomach virus. Later that winter, he had a cancer scare.

Then you have that Gary Player connection: Immelman’s idol from his native South Africa once took a picture with a 5-year-old Immelman. It also was 30 years ago that Player won his third and last Masters.

Some nice stories at the Masters only last for a while, though. Just ask Zach Johnson, last year’s champion out of nowhere. He enjoyed a year of sitting on the couches of late night talk shows and exchanging handshakes with gawking strangers before spending this year’s Masters sliding back into the shadows of the Georgia pines throughout Bobby Jones’ famous playground.

This is more about Woods than Immelman, though. When it comes to the Masters and any major tournaments, this is always about Woods. Said Stewart Cink about the Tiger effect at tournaments, “It’s like trying to breath air at the top of Mount Everest. There’s not a lot of it left over.”

This will make Woods angry. This also will make Woods better. So, if you’re wondering where the world’s best golfer goes from here after boldly stating that winning all four majors this year was “easily within reach,” he still is a mighty favorite to complete the three-quarters Grand Slam after the U.S. Open, British Open and PGA championship.

“I learned my lesson there with the press,” said Woods, forcing a laugh at the 18th green after another ugly putting day within Richmond County. He finished 5-under-par for the tournament after shooting a 72-71-68-72 284, and get this: While watching (and maybe fuming) in the clubhouse, he saw that he was within a few missed putts away from Immelman, who predictably crumbled a bit down the stretch. Said Woods, “It’s one of those things, when you’re out there playing, you couldn’t care less (about what people think of your comments). You’re just trying to win a golf tournament. You just try to put yourself in a position, which I did.”

Woods just couldn’t find miracles or birdies in his putter. While Immelman had nothing to do with Woods’ inability to sink putts beyond 10 feet, Immelman did have much to do with Woods’ inability to produce miracles. That’s because Immelman had used all the miracles up.

Not only for Woods, but for everybody else in the Masters.

Just five months ago, Immelman was recovering from a surgery in his native South Africa after the discovery of a cancerous growth in his back. He eventually lost 25 pounds. So, after the second day of what would become his four days of doing a rarity by leading the Masters from wire-to-wire, he said of his physical ordeal, “You know, it definitely gives you perspective, because I went from winning a tournament to lying in a hospital bed waiting for results on a tumor. So it definitely made me realized that golf wasn’t my whole life.”

In contrast, golf really is Woods’ whole life, which is why the rest of his peers better enjoy this while they can.

Terrance getting a job as a sports columnist is a fluke, oh, wait, maybe it was because of quotas.

I don’t know what to say about this column.

Trevor Immelman was tied for the lead after the first round, leading after the second round, leading after the third round, and won the Masters by three strokes.

How is that a fluke?

Also, Tiger Woods isn’t going to get any better than he is right now. He’s in his prime. He’s young. He’s strong. He’s the best golfer in the world. He just came up a little short this week.

Terence is just BITTER (See Barack Obama), he thought he was in Augusta to kickoff the Tiger Grand Slam of 2008 and he would be “da man” to cover it for the ATL. Terence, what do you know about golf? Shouldn’t you stick to trying to cover the NBA and kissing Notre Dame Butt? Perhaps it is just the fact the kid is from South Africa that p@$ses you off! Maybe he will throw you a krugerand!

It’s seems its all about terrence. Tiger is the man, but why pee on Immelman’s parade. He was great and classy, something Tiger should work on with his language and theatrics.

Terence,

I thoroughly enjoyed the Masters Tournament and in particular, seeing you forced to either work for a story or write this. I mean, you wrote a good piece on Thursday about the Tournament and atmosphere- Few days in sports rival the Masters. But you followed that up with a safety article on Mickleson (Friday) and another one about Tiger on Saturday. I wouldnt be surprised if you left there Thursday afternoon and watched the rest on TV. In fact, I would bet on it.

I read so much potential I told you so built into Tigers piece yesterday that it doesnt surprise me you have already posted this.

You really do need to do more homework about the sports that you cover. Your lack of understanding of the game, the other 99% of the players in the field and the course itself, was very apparent (again).

Keep up the mediocre work and hope the AJC cant track your whereabouts each day this week. LOL.

Perhaps you, Terrence, can now start writing about the Masters that Trevor won instead of the one Tiger lost. Terrence, you’re an idiot. Chop, chop got it right above…Trevor was in the lead for four days - I think he failed to receive your memo last week stating that all others were scared, playing for second, and should go ahead and concede to the Tiger. I like Tiger BUT I’m sick of it always being about him and the fact that pigs like Terrence and the AJC can’t give credit where credit it due.

Tiger is all about Tiger. I love me, I’m the best, I’m suppose to win. How dare I lose. Someone made a noise and made me hit a bad shot. He’s the worst golf champion I’ve seen in a long time. No class. He’s not “The Man”, he’s “The Spoiled Brat”. (No racial pun intended).

There will be a big celebration in Atlanta the day it is known that Terence is leaving to do something else.

I don’t buy the paper anymore and I have decreased how much I read the AJC online. It is because of articles like this one and the one earlier this week claiming “Tiger will win”.

If there are enough people in this town who like this kind of crap then we have a big problem.

Tiger cannot get any better than he is. He is in his prime. He will go on to win more majors but he is starting to show a lack of class.

My guess is his recent attitude is really dissing him from the rest of the PGA field. It looks to me like Tiger is beginning to think that “just because I have won 13 majors, and practice so much, I should win every time”. Terrence sure bought off on that.

Tiger does have an opportunity to learn from this which may make him better in a way.

Just go away Terence. You are hurting people like Tiger and of course you are nothing the city of Atlanta or the AJC should be proud of.

Over the years I have read the posts here and tried to give Terry every benefit of the doubt. This one finally pushed me over the edge. I could care less about the color of a person’s skin whatever the sport. In golf, particularly, it is the individual. Tiger didn’t perform! He didn’t do what he had to do…do you think he choked a bit on a couple of those short putts? This is absolutely one of the most obvious racist articles/columns I have ever read. Give Immelman his due. I do think Terry found himself in place where he believed he did not belong, and when his Asian-African guy didn’t deliver he had to take it out on someone. The fact it was also someone from South Africa, the land of apartheid, just made it easier. I also believe Immelmann, unlike Zach Johnson, will be a major factor at the Masters in years to come. This guy is the real deal unlike Mr. Moore. The more I think about I come to the conclusion Terry Moore is the AJC’s “boy” who helps them look good on the quota tally. It pains me to say that, but Terry you finally got to me!

Terrence,

I guess it is your job to be controversial, not correct. If you have ever actually touched a golf club, you would appreciate what happened at Augusta this week.

Trevor Immelman played well for the first 3 rounds- Tiger did not-and built up a large enough lead so that he could afford a round of 75 and watch as everyone including Tiger, tried to catch him. Sound familiar? That is how Tiger has won most of his Majors. Were they all a fluke, too?

By MP

Jack Nicklaus came in 2nd at 18 majors. When it’s all said and done Tiger will probable have similar numbers. YOU CAN’T WIN THEM ALL, even if you are Tiger!

When I saw so-called fluke Trevor Immelman getting crowned with his Green Jacket on Sunday, I couldnt help but laugh out loud. No, not because Im an Immelman fan, not because Im from South Africa, and not because Im a Tiger Woods hater.
I laughed because I knew that writer Terrence Moore was probably thrashing around his living room in frustration that Tiger just couldnt pull it out in the end. The humor dates back to last Wednesday when Terrence Moore had the audacity to write, [Tiger] cant lose. He wont lose.
Well, he can and he did.
Sorry, Terrence. You were wrong and Tiger was off his game for about three days before putting together a charge as the Sunday sun set on Augusta.
What is even sadder than Moores unrelenting allegiance to Woods is the fact that he not only disrespected and diminished last years Masters champion, Zach Johnson, but he started banging away on his keyboard in disgusted hatred calling this years champ a fluke as soon as the tournament became final.
It just seems to me as if Terrence Moores subjectivity completely clouds his judgment and unfortunately, his writing as well.
For me, Moores credibility was flushed down the toilet along with semi-digested Velveeta when he wrote a column about the Super Bowl that pitted the Eagles against the Patriots when he wrote that an Eagles victory at the helm of black quarterback Donovan McNabb would be a victory for every person who happens to be black in America.
This latest not-so-colorblind fanaticism in the form of elevating Tiger Woods to the top of the leader board even though Woods has not won the Masters since 2005 serves as a testament that Moore has completely lost (assuming he ever possessed) the ability to view sports through a rational lens. Moore deserves any criticism that is chucked his way after this weekend concerning his latest articles about the Masters, not for his automatic endorsement of Woods before this tournament even commenced, but for his irresponsible depiction that despite his claim that Immelman had used all the miracles up (see the ending ones sentence with a preposition fallacy) and that this tournament was still more about Woods than the winner of the 2008 Masters.
No, Terrence. This tournament is about the South African winner who, despite his biographical information that you felt pertinent enough to disqualify him from the prestige of donning a Green Jacket, goes by the name Trevor Immelman. You stated that his victory means nothing and all it represents is a feel good story. Wrong.
What his victory means is that he won the tournament, and he did it fair and square. Whether it “makes Woods angry” or improves his game is quite irrelevant. What does matter is that Trevor Immelman was better than every golfer in the world (including Tiger Woods) for four days.

Kansas won the NT because it beat and was better than Memphis on that one night. Is Kansas the better team? Don’t know. All we know is they were better that night. And that’s all that really matters.

Immelman was better than Tiger and the rest of the entire field for 4 days. Is he a better golfer than Tiger? Clearly not. But the green jacket and trophy doesn’t go to the best golfer in the world— it goes to the best golfer over those 4 days.

There’s no excuse for putting Immelman down and saying he won only because Tiger didn’t perform. As a matter of fact, TM, I would bet Tiger would take exception to your article because he has class. More class than you will ever have. And you’ll never hear him play the bitter race card like you do.

Golf is about more than winning and losing, its what makes it different from all other sports, how you lose says as much about what kind of golfer you are as how you win does.

You would never hear Jack, Arnie, Gary Player, Byron Nelson, Sam Snead, or Bobby Jones cussing on the golf course or slamming clubs.

Of course, todays younger fans have no idea what I’m talking about.

But that’s why it does not matter if Tiger wins 150 tournaments and 50 majors, he will still never be the greatest golfer of all time.

And PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE, no more talk about winning the SLAM unitl at least the first tournament has been one.

Terrence, So Tiger has never won a major when trailing on Sunday morning, that’s 0-32, yet its a “fluke” he didn’t win this one?

Seems more like a trend to me, either Eldrick dominates on Saturday and cruises to victory - or he doesn’t win. He presses too hard on Sunday when he’s behind. By the way, Immelman was Top 20 in the World Last Year, he is no fluke.

Terence, the Masters is a four day performance test where Immelman beat Woods. Immelman was better than Woods in greens hit, fairways hit, sand saves, putts. Over the course of the year, Woods will probably beat Immelman in overall performance. However, in this test, the better golfer won. Give him his credit.

By heybud

Well, Terence, congratulations. You have once again accomplished your goal of stirring the racial embers of your readership.

What I don’t get is this: Why are you so interested in what a half-Asian golfer does? … What’s that? … Oh, that’s right - Tiger Woods is one-quarter black. Now, I get it.

Seriously, though, I think your article reeked of sour grapes.

On Tuesday evening you wrote that it was a slam-dunk that Tiger would win the Masters, and when he didn’t win, you write that Trevor Immelman’s win was a fluke.

It wasn’t a fluke. Trevor Immelman had a lower score over a four day period than Tiger Woods.

Tiger has left the field in the dust at many tournaments in the past and then coasted to victory on Sunday. Were those wins flukes (when the field closed on him but did not overtake him because of the big lead he had built)? No, he outperformed his competitors. This past weekend Trevor Immelman outperformed his competitors.

I was impressed that Tiger finished second. He performed well on Sunday, just not well enough to overcome a six shot deficit.

Considering the conditions on Sunday, I was very impressed with Tiger’s performance. I was even more impressed with Trevor Immelman’s performance.

Was Tiger the odds-on favorite? Absolutely, and he will be the odds-on favorite again next year as he should be. However, this past weekend Tiger did not perform his usual magic on the golf course.

Look, Terence, I know your game, and I still read your articles, because from time to time you do enlighten me (despite the sarcasm I showed above) and from time to time you write a glowing article about someone I admire. However, in this article, you sounded like the little whiny kid who didn’t get his way when “his guy” or “his team” didn’t win.

Tiger Woods is the most talented golfer in the world, and Trevor Immelman is not, but none of us know what the future holds. It is way too soon to say who will definitely win or who will definitely lose anything in the future.

To call Trevor’s win a fluke is a disservice to Trevor, to Tiger, and to every other professional golfer.

If your goal was to be controversial (as I believe it usually is), I must once again congratulate you. You have accomplished your goal.

However, if objectivity (or some semblance of objectivity) was the goal, I’d say you not only missed the mark, you weren’t even in the ballpark.

Immelman won the most difficult tournament in golf. On one of the game’s hardest courses. In extremely difficult conditions Sunday. He held/shared the lead after all four rounds. He maintained his position as leader under the pressure of a Sunday at Augusta. How is that a fluke? And I would almost guarantee that Tiger will not win the next three majors this year. That is ridiculous. And I would say it’s a fairly safe bet that Immelman will win a few more majors before he’s done. I enjoyed your article about how special the Masters is. But this article is downright illogical.

By Navigator

Once maybe, twice no. Two years in a row a young golfer wins, and what it says is the golf course is better than any golfer (including Woods). Another golfer was fighting with Jack Nicklaus for a major only to finish second. No one thought at the time Arnold Palmer would never win a major again. Woods is still the dominant player right now, but he needs to savor every opportunity to win a major. You never know when it will be his last win, understanding a serious back injury, or in Immelman’s case an unknown tumor.

I can’t say what I want to say here because it’s not politically correct. Although, Terence doesn’t have any trouble doing it. Look, Tiger is in his prime right now. I think this is as good as he’s going to get. I’m truely looking forward to someone else coming in and being the new golf hero. I’m sick of seeing Tiger in TWO pictures on the front page of the AJC when he’s NOwhere near the lead. AJC.com even has a photo gallery of “Mrs. Tiger Woods: Elin Nordegren”. Gimme a break! And for Terence to take away from Immelman’s win. What a classless little man he is.

Terence - You’re truly a piece of work. Of what kind of work, I’m not sure. Gaging from the blog, most everyone else agrees. Out of all the wonderful storylines that come out of the Masters each year, only you, bigot and racist that you are, would write about a black man that, if he didn’t win, “he must of got screwed.” Immelman a fluke? The man led out of the gate and never looked back. Tremendous pressure, poor conditions - the man earned every bit of it, I don’t care what race or country he is from. This in no way diminishes the great player that Tiger is. His putts would not drop, his short game was off and his drives did not fall. But even on an off day, Tiger finished second in this great tournament which is a testament to him. But the winner was no fluke, and I bet your own Tiger would be the first to admit that. How much longer must we tolerate your dribble, Terence? You missed a great storyline and still call yourself a journalist? Yea and I guess you also fancy yourself a sportswriter too. AJC - how about some help here?

I hope Billy Payne sits down and reviews the CBS telecast of the weekend coverage (especially Sunday). Nick Faldo’s ego does not fit into what is otherwise a great TV experience. His self ingratiating comments about “his” shots, wins, decisions, clothing are quite boring and trite. And the comment about one player who was playing poorly, ” I bet he’s ready to get out of this place” was rather boorish. Mr Faldo should not be allowed to refer to ‘The National’ as “this place”. All in all, his performance was a double bogey. To much talent out there for us to suffer him, English accent or not.
