Lee brings Black College experience to N.C. A&T

North Carolina A&T will have a new coach on the sideline next season, but he isn’t new to Black College football.

Alonza Lee Sr. has been hired as the Aggies’ new coach and will bring more than 25 years of experience to the A&T program, including a previous stint as the program’s defensive coordinator. Lee has spent the past three seasons as defensive coordinator at Morgan State, helping the Bears rank among the nation’s best defenses in the Football Championship Subdivision (formerly Division I-AA).

Lee served as A&T’s defensive coordinator and linebackers coach from 2003-05 and has also worked at Florida A&M, Howard and Hampton.

“Alonzo Lee has been an accomplished coordinator and assistant in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference for many years,” North Carolina A&T athletics director Wheeler Brown said in a statement released by the school. “He knows this conference, what it will take to win in the conference, and will bring the needed toughness and discipline our football program has lacked over the past few years.”

Lee replaces former coach Lee Fobbs, who was fired two days following the team’s 42-7 loss to Delaware State Oct. 18.

Tennessee State’s Williams helps East to Shrine win

Javarris Williams rushed for 56 yards and a touchdown to help the East squad to a 24-19 victory over the West in the East-West Shrine Game in Houston.

Williams scored on a 3-yard run in the second quarter that gave the East a 14-3 lead. Williams’ run was set up by a 47-yard run by Nebraska’s Marlon Lucky, who also had a TD and lead the East with 68 rushing yards.

Black College bands headed to Inauguration

Get ready Black College football fans - five of the top HBCU bands will strut their stuff next week in the Presidential Inaugural Parade in Washington, D.C.

Delaware State, Florida A&M, Grambling, Hampton and Howard will be among the more than 70 bands participating in next Tuesday’s parade honoring the swearing in of President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden. The wide-ranging list of bands includes high school bands South Cobb from metro Atlanta and T.C. Williams from Virginia, the school which served as the subject of the Denzel Washington movie “Remember the Titans”, and a pair of law-enforcement bands from Delaware and Kentucky.

But the parade attendees that aren’t familiar with the exploits of HBCU bands might be in for a treat as FAM’s Marching 100, the World Famed Marching Tigers of Grambling, Hampton’s Marching Force, Delaware State and Hampton show what they’re working with as they stroll down Pennsylvania Avenue.

While on the subject of bands, it gives me an opportunity to bring back a discussion from a few months ago - who has the best band among HBCU schools? Not sure how the five bands were selected to participate in the parade, but I would assume only the best of the best would be chosen for such a historic event.

I would also assume that there are fans of other schools — namely Jackson State, Southern and Tennessee State — that would put their band up against anyone. So …. what are your thoughts on the bands participating in the parade and who do you think has the best HBCU band - and why.
