HBCU players earn All-America status
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Ten players from HBCU programs were named to the Associated Press Football Championship Subdivision (formerly Division I-AA) All-America team.
Tennessee State offensive lineman Cornelius Lewis, a 6-foot-5, 310-pound senior who began his collegiate career at Florida State, and Prairie View linebacker Zach East, a 6-2, 230-pound senior who transferred from Hampton, were named to the first team.
MEAC champion South Carolina State had two players on the team — offensive lineman Raymond Harrison (second team) and Will Ford (third team). Two other MEAC players - FAMU’s LeRoy Vann (second team All-Purpose) and Morgan State’s Jarrell Guyton (third team linebacker) - also made the team.
In addition to East, four other players from the SWAC were honored - Jackson State DB Dominique Johnson on the second team and third-teamers Thomas Harris of Alabama A&M, Abner Brown of Mississippi Valley and William Osbourne of Texas Southern.
Anyone surprised that Grambling, this year’s Black College national champion, didn’t have any players on the team. And once the Division II list is released, I’ll get it posted.

It’s hard for me to believe no one from Grambling made the list.

I know Appalachian State isn’t an HBCU but did their quarterback make the team? He’s pretty good.

LT, The player in question, Armanti Edwards, made the first team at quarterback. He’s a baller and was the primary reason why App State beat S.C. State in the first round of the playoffs.

Armanti Edwards is the primary reason App State defeated Michigan last year as well.

How big is Armanti Edwards? He looks a little smallish to me.

Edwards is listed at 6-feet, 185 pounds …. And yes, he appears to be on the small side. Having seen him play in person a few times in the last couple of years, I can tell you he’s legit.

Hey,where did those comments go? If you’re going to police the comments, change the term comments to censorships. I saw nothing vulgar, just another point of view.

FYI:
Morehouse linebacker Jeffrey Cargile has been named to two Division II All-American teams - the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) All American first team squad and the Daktronics All American second team squad. He led the nation in sacks and tackles for loss and was the SIAC Defensive Player of the Year.

Congrats to all these guys who made the AA list. Once again, a season goes by and my beloved Howard Bison still stink.
Quick question for other readers…which HBCU has the best facilities (stadium, weight room, etc.) and booster support ($$$)to really make a sustained push to reach the top of the I-AA (NCAA FCS). Surely one of our schools can man-up and money-up to be a serious threat for a national title.
holla back.

Howard Man, That’s a good question for the forum. At first glance, I would say Tennessee State and Florida A&M might have the best opportunity. Both universities have huge fan bases and plenty of $$$. Both are also in conferences that are currently participating in the FCS playoffs. South Carolina State showed it was ready to compete with the big boys with its playoff showing …. Would’ve been nice to see what Grambling might have done in the playoffs. Anyone else with a response for Howard Man?

Do you think Armanti Edwards will get drafted. If so, what position? QB or WR?

Seems like he’s been around forever, but he was a true freshman when he led the Mountaineers over Michigan and he’s still only a junior. He will indeed play on Sunday in the future, but not sure if it will be at QB full-time. There’s no doubt he has the talent to play in the NFL, hopefully he’ll fall into the right system. By the way, he was just named the winner of the Walter Payton Award, the FCS equivalent to the Heisman Trophy. A couple of other recent Payton winners (Tony Romo, Brian Westbrook) have had pretty good NFL careers.
