Grambling No. 1 in Black College poll

Just in case you missed it, the new Sheridan Network Broadcasting Black College football poll was released earlier this week and the No. 1 team was …. not Tuskegee.

For the first time this season, the Golden Tigers (10-1) didn’t sit atop the poll, thanks to their 17-13 loss to Alabama State in the Turkey Day Classic. The top spot went to Grambling, the SWAC Western Division champion and the winner of last weekend’s Bayou Classic over Southern.

The Tigers (10-2), who will play Jackson State in the SWAC championship game Dec. 13, were ranked third last week, but jumped over No. 2 South Carolina State with their win over Southern. S.C. State (10-3), which lost to Appalachian State in the first round of the FCS playoffs, remained No. 2 followed by Tuskegee, Prairie View (9-1) and Florida A&M (9-3).

The second five was headed by CIAA champion Shaw (8-3) followed by Jackson State (7-4), Bethune-Cookman (8-3), Tennessee State (8-4) and Southern (6-5).

So, what are you thoughts on the new poll? Do you agree with the rankings? Do you think one team should be ranked ahead of another?

Let me know what you think.

MEAC awards: As expected, South Carolina State had a heavy presence among MEAC postseason honorees, capturing three of the five top awards. Find out which Bulldogs were honored by clicking here for the recap story.

Continue the lively debate: There were many passionate responses to the earlier blog on the discussion of possibly merging black and white colleges (read the blog here). Commenting on that blog has been closed, but feel free to continue the discussion here.

All-time Black College football team: The debate continues on who should be listed on the all-time squad. Click here, read the blog and join the conversation.

How can you have Southern in the top ten and not have Albany State in the top ten. Albany State has held their own for years and had a better record than Southern.

Hey Y’all:

Delaware State University will be back next year in the MEAC. They went undefeated (11-0)last year and lost to the nUniversity of Delaware in the NCAA I-AA playoff.and lost some strategic players this year which hindered their ability to compete effectively. However, believe me, they will be at the top of the MEAC and other football ratings next year. Therefore, “BEWARE OF THE DELAWARE STATE UNIVERSITY FOOTBALL HORNETS NEXT YEAR. They will be back to breaking hearts throughout black college football. SE ya then.

GO DELAWARE STATE UNIVERSITY HORNETS

Rod, That’s a legitimate question. Albany State finished at 7-4 (including a loss in the first round of the Division II playoffs) while Southern finished at 6-5 playing in the SWAC. I can say that after further examination of the polls, Southern received a total of 35 points to finish 10th while Albany State was the first of the ‘others receiving votes’ group with 33 (Fayetteville State 27, Elizabeth City State 24, Morgan State 19, Langston 8 also received votes). In the eyes of the voters, I guess Southern was just a little better than Albany - but not much.

How can you have Tuskegee ranked ahead of Prairie View? They both only have one lost. However,Tuskegee lost to an unranked Alabama State team that PV blew out. Also, PV’s only lost is to the #1 team.

I agree with ShortTexas. Tuskegee probably should’ve dropped one more spot, especially since Prairie View’s only loss was to Grambling and Tuskegee lost to an Alabama State team that P-View smoked. But polls are subjective anyway, so I guess you can’t get too bent out of shape behind them.

This poll is flawed every year.

For those claiming to have great teams coming back next year, watchout for the Rattlers. We were picked to finish sixth in the MEAC, but took home second place. Our losses were by a combined 14 points. We had about 3 seniors starting. Not only will we be strong next year and will when it all, the future looks scary for the rest of Black College football when you think about Joe Taylor and the amount of interest that he has stirred up in the State of Florida with recruits. We will reign supreme, GUARANTEED!

HBCUs need a national championship playoff system. It will be more profitable than the ncaa’s.

Tuskegee should have never lost anyways. Anyone at the game(Turkey Day Classic) saw the catch made at the end of the game. Even the SIAC has sent an apology to Tuskegee and have fired the official. Because of one bad call they are losing their well deserved National Championship.

Tuskegee is not on the same level with Grambling and I wish this could be settled on the field. We would destroy them. A game should never come down to one bad call. If they were that good then they should have whipped A-State like Grambling whipped Prairie View. I believe that after Saturday when we beat J-State the true National Champion will be crowned. GOOOOOOOOOO TIGERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
