Tuskegee still No. 1, big Classic weekend

The top five remained unchanged this week in the latest Sheridan Broadcasting Network Black College football poll.

Tuskegee (10-0) maintained its hold on the top spot and will take its 26-game winning streak into the Turkey Day Classic against Alabama State Thanksgiving Day in Montgomery.

South Carolina State (9-2) continued as the No. 2 team and will close out the regular season Saturday at North Carolina A&T. The Bulldogs, who have won seven straight since losing to Clemson, will advance to the playoffs in the Football Championship Subdivision (formerly known as Division I-AA) as the champion of the MEAC.

Grambling, Prairie View and Bethune-Cookman round out the top five. Grambling (8-2) can clinch the SWAC Western Division title with a victory over Texas Southern Thursday while Prairie View (9-1), currently second behind Grambling in the West, needs the Tigers to lose against Texas Southern and Southern to advance to the SWAC title game.

Southern, Tennessee State, Shaw, Florida A&M and Jackson State are ranked sixth through 10th respectively.

It’s time for the Florida Classic: The Florida Citrus Bowl in Orlando will be the site of the 29th Florida Classic featuring Bethune-Cookman and Florida A&M Saturday. The teams have split the last four games in the Classic, Bethune-Cookman winning in 2004 and last year and FAMU prevailing in ‘05 and ‘06.

Smiling down on Mississippi: Comedian and syndicated radio host Rickey Smiley will be one of the featured attractions during the weekend-long Capital City Classic in Jackson, MS. Saturday’s game will feature the Jackson State Tigers, the reigning SWAC champions, against Alcorn State.

S.C. State will continue to show how good it is when it plays in the I-AA playoffs. We have rolled through the MEAC, let’s hope it continues as we go for a national championship.

I see there are two Classics this weekend. Both are good but I think the Atlanta Classic and Bayou Classic are the best two. But that’s just my opinion. I’m sure everyone has their favorite.

you were right, the BAYOU CLASSIC is Black America’s Super Bowl, it pits one of the most Prestigious Football Programs in America, Grambling State University, against one of the worse programs in the America (SUck), hundreds of thousands descend on one city, to show their school pride and with one team coming into the Dome Undefeated and the other holding on for dear life something is bound to set off. We Are GRAMBLING and this is our Year, Bye Bye Pete

Mr. Grambling, You should be proud of the Classic event that your school participates in. Have had the pleasure of attending as a fan and media member and must admit it’s one of a kind. Looks like you guys are on a roll this year. Should be a fun weekend all around for Grambling fans in New Orleans.

I have attended the Atlanta, Bayou, and Florida Classic games. With that said I have repeated the Florida Classic 4 times. There is nothing like the Florida Classic.

Mr. Classic, For those who haven’t attended any of those events, please let them know what makes the Florida Classic better than the others - or why was it special for you.

Oh no TSU. A critical loss last wknd. But we still have a chance at an at large birth into the 1AA playoffs.

I have been to the Circle City, Southern Heritage, and Atlanta Classic several times. I really enjoyed all of them. At The Southern Heritage there is nothing like hanging out with all the crowd in town for the game on Beale St. However the “bad crowd” always seems to make its way over.

I’m biased towards ATL since I am a CP native but there are so many things to do in association with the ATL Classic.

One event that was real nice was the Silver Dollar Classic ( I think). It was 02, maybe 03 in Las Vegas! TSU vs Grambling. They need to get that going again. I had a blast.
