Which HBCU school has the best band?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
OK, let’s try something a little different this week.
I’m going to bypass picking this week’s games (please keep your applause to a minimum) and address an issue that I’ve received many e-mails about. Actually, I’ve heard from many people wanting to know when I would ask this question - Who has the best band among HBCU schools?
I know there’s some passion involved with this subject, so I’d like to hear some passionate responses as to why you think a particular band is the best. I enjoyed Savannah State’s band while I attended school there (and yes, I will be there for homecoming this weekend to check out the Coastal Empire Sound Explosion) and as a native Atlantan, there was nothing like hearing the Atlanta University Center bands do their thing.
Florida A&M’s Marching 100 has been putting it down for years (check out its website by clicking here) while I’ve known people who will argue for 24 straight hours that the Aristocrats of Tennessee State are hands down No. 1.
Jackson State’s Sonic Boom of the South ain’t no joke and Southern’s Human Jukebox? Seeing is believing ….
Enough of what I’ve seen - and I must admit it isn’t much. It’s time for you to weigh in. Who has the best HBCU band in your opinion and why.
I’ll go back to predicting games next week. Maybe the extra time will give me more time to improve.

Lingering thoughts from the weekend
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Sorry guys, have been a little under the weather and I apologize for the delay in updating the blog.
Had some interesting outcomes over the weekend, huh? Did anyone think South Carolina State would defeat Hampton as bad as it did? Looks like the Bulldogs are for real big time …
Another week, another victory by Tuskegee. The Golden Tigers seem to keep rolling and rolling … is there anyone on the schedule capable of slowing them down?
Here’s a look at this week’s Sheridan Black College poll with the Shaw Bears of the CIAA making their first appearance of the season:
Team/Record
Tuskegee/8-0
South Carolina State/6-2
Grambling State/6-2
Florida A&M/6-2
Prairie View/7-1
Hampton/5-2
Bethune-Cookman/5-2
Tennessee State/6-2
Southern/4-4
Shaw/6-3
What are your thoughts on the new poll? Are you surprised that a 4-4 Southern squad is still ranked, or does that speak to the level of competition that the Jags face in the SWAC?
Should South Carolina State have jumped to the No. 1 spot after its dominating win over previously third-ranked Hampton? Or did Tuskegee solidify its No. 1 ranking with another victory — its 24th straight?
Let me know what you think about the rankings or about any else going on in Black College football.
Miss any scores from the weekend? Check out the good folks at Onnidan’s HBCU Sports Online for all of the Black College scores from last weekend and this weekend’s schedule.

MEAC showdown - Hampton vs. S.C. State
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
The showdown in the MEAC has arrived — South Carolina State will host Hampton Saturday in a game likely to decide the conference champion.
The teams are ranked second and third in this week’s Sheridan Black College poll and both are undefeated in the conference. The Pirates are embracing the importance of the game, with junior linebacker Michael Swett calling it ‘championship week’ in a story in this week’s Newport News (Va.) Daily Press.
South Carolina State coach Buddy Pough says that Hampton’s ‘the big dog right now in our league’ and knows the Bulldogs must win Saturday to win the MEAC.
“We’re the last two teams without a loss in the league and that makes it imperative that we win,” Pough told the Orangeburg (S.C.) Times and Democrat.
South Carolina State has won the last two games in the series, and should make it three with a close victory at home.
Other games to watch for this weekend …
Alabama A&M vs. Alabama State: The long-time rivals meet in the annual Magic City Classic in Birmingham. Legion Field is expected to be packed for the 67th annual game, and with actress Vivica A. Fox as the ambassador for the event, it’s definitely worth the price of admission. On the field, Alabama A&M has won three straight and five of the last six - and should win again on Saturday.
Tennessee State at SE Missouri: Let’s not forget about Big Blue since it doesn’t play in an HBCU conference. The Tigers are the only unbeaten team in the Ohio Valley Conference, and should remain that way after Saturday’s road win.
Albany State at Morehouse: The Rams should bounce back from last week’s loss to Tuskegee - and spoil Morehouse’s homecoming - with the win at B.T. Harvey Stadium.
The Best of the Rest

Alcorn State/Texas Southern
Arkansas-Pine Bluff/Lincoln, Mo.

Who’s the best in Black College football?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
In my short time writing this blog, I received several e-mails primarily asking two questions - Who has the best team and who’s the best player in Black College football.
So, let’s jump on the ‘Who has the best team’ debate.
In the latest Sheridan Broadcasting Network Black College Football poll, Grambling was ranked No. 1 followed by South Carolina State, Tuskegee, Prairie View and Florida A&M.
For most of the year, Tuskegee was ranked at the top - and for good reason. The Golden Tigers were the Black College champions of 2007 and had a 26-game winning streak before losing to Alabama State on Thanksgiving Day.
Tuskegee’s credentials seemed impressive to me, but I’ve heard from some that the Golden Tigers couldn’t compete, much less dominate, on a weekly basis in the MEAC or SWAC. Grambling has rolled through the Western Division of the SWAC, defeating rival Southern in the process, and will meet Jackson State for the conference title Dec. 13.
South Carolina State dominated the MEAC and advanced to the FCS playoffs for the first time in 26 years.
So, what do you think? Is Grambling the best team in Black College football? What about South Carolina State? Tuskegee? FAMU? Tennessee State? Prairie View?
It’s not for me to decide, let me know who should be No. 1 and why.

North Carolina A&T fires coach
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
North Carolina A&T fired coach Lee Fobbs Monday, two days after the team’s 42-7 loss at Delaware State. (See story).
Fobbs was 2-28 in two-plus seasons at A&T, including six straight losses after opening the season with two wins. The Aggies were 0-11 in each of Fobbs’ first two seasons.
Looking back at last weekend’s action:
• Tuskegee extended its winning streak and seized control of the SIAC title race with a 33-20 victory over Albany State. In winning its 23rd straight, Tuskegee watched as Albany State missed an extra point that would’ve broken a 20-20 tie and proceeded to score a pair of TDs to pull away in the fourth quarter.
“This was a good football team we played today. I’m happy with the win,” Tuskegee coach Willie Slater told the Montgomery Advertiser.
As for Albany State, it was the second conference loss of the season. According to an article in the Albany Herald, the Rams still are likely to advance to the Division II playoffs, but have been surpassed by Tuskegee as the toast of the SIAC.
• Clark Atlanta gave Morehouse the beat down in a game where the Maroon Tigers were “outplayed, outcoached and out-progammed” according to coach Rich Freeman’s comments to the AJC. Check out the photos from the 29-2 Clark victory.
• FAMU’s QB tandem of Eddie Battle and Curtis Pulley led the Rattlers past Southern in the MEAC/SWAC matchup. Battle, the starter, passed for one TD while Pulley, the former University of Kentucky player, had three TD passes, a TD reception and 118 yards rushing in the 52-49 victory.
“Some games I have a great game and some games he does. Tonight he was on,” Battle told the Baton Rouge Advocate. “He and I understand we’re doing this for one purpose, the team.”
• Hampton won the Battle of the Bay, defeating rival Norfolk State 35-17. According to the Newport News (Va.) Daily Press, the Pirates benefited from three big plays - TD passes of 70 and 80 yards and a 60-yard punt return - in the victory and moved a half-game ahead of South Carolina State heading into next week’s MEAC showdown between the teams.
• Weekend scoreboard (courtesy of Onnidan )

Will Tuskegee’s streak finally end?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Not sure if many of you noticed, but I was perfect in predicting the winners of last week’s games …. ok, that’s not totally true.
I was 5-for-5 in the highlight games thanks to wins by Albany State, Tuskegee, Grambling, Shaw and FAMU. As for the other games, I wasn’t as lucky.
How bad was it? Two of the teams that I picked to win lost their games behind a combined score of 109-9. Yeah, I received a beatdown!
So, let me try my luck this week with the following games:
Norfolk State at Hampton: Hampton’s No. 3 in this week’s Sheridan Black College poll and faces next week’s key MEAC game against South Carolina State, Sheridan’s No. 2 team, on the road. Prime spot for a slip-up against 2-4 Norfolk State, but it won’t happen - take the Pirates at home.
Virginia State at Virginia Union: Top game in the CIAA this week. Virginia Union wins at home and keeps pace on its eventual collision course with Elizabeth City State for the Eastern Division title.
FAMU at Southern: In a matchup of the bands, take the Rattlers hands down. On the field, I like the Jags to win at home.
Morehouse at Clark: Atlanta University Center rivals are both 3-2 in the conference and both suffered losses last week. There really isn’t a home-field advantage since the schools are within walking distance, but I’ll go with Clark Atlanta.
Albany State at Tuskegee: Sheridan’s No. 1 team and defending Black College champion Tuskegee hosts Albany State in a game that should ultimately decide the SIAC champion. The Rams are back on the right track after their surprising loss to Benedict and have a pair of QBs that could present problems for the Golden Tigers. Tuskegee’s 22-game winning streak will come to an end at some point, but it won’t be this week - take Tuskegee at home.
Some other games to watch:
Winner/Loser
Tennessee State/Austin Peay
Savannah State/Miss. Valley
Grambling/Alabama State
Prairie View/Ark.-Pine Bluff
Alcorn State/Alabama A&M
Jackson State/Texas Southern
Morgan State/Howard
Delaware State/North Carolina A&T
Shaw/Chowan
Elizabeth City State/Lincoln (Pa.)
Fayetteville State/Johnson C. Smith
Bowie State/St. Paul’s
Livingstone/St. Augustine’s
Fort Valley/Benedict
Kentucky State/Miles
Stillman/Lane

SIAC showdown among weekend’s top games
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Things to look for in Black College football this weekend:
‘Skegee hosts SIAC showdown: The top two teams in the SIAC meet in Tuskegee, Ala. as the streaking Golden Tigers, winners of 22 straight since ‘06, hosts the Rams of Albany State. Tuskegee (6-0, 5-0 SIAC) showed its championship mettle last weekend by rebounding from a halftime deficit to thump Morehouse while Albany State (5-1, 4-1) has shown it is Ram tough by defeating Stillman and Clark Atlanta after its upset loss to Benedict.
Talented QBs on display: Keep an eye on the quarterbacks as Southern hosts Florida A&M in a SWAC vs. MEAC battle. Jags QB Bryant Lee had 421 yards passing and rushing, five TDs and no picks in last week’s win over Texas Southern while FAM’s Curtis Pulley doesn’t have the big numbers, but has made big plays all season - just ask Tennessee State.
Battle of the Bay: The Tidewater area’s finest meet this weekend as Hampton and Norfolk State meet in the Battle of the Bay in Hampton. The Pirates (4-1, 3-0 MEAC) look to hold on to first in the conference with next week’s MEAC showdown in Orangeburg, S.C. against South Carolina State looming large. Norfolk State nearly put a damper on the Hampton-S.C. State matchup, taking the Bulldogs to the limit before falling 24-23 on the road.
So, let’s open the discussion and talk about which game of the weekend is most important - and why. Also, who has been the most impressive Black College player that you’ve seen this season - and what has he done that has impressed you the most.
Coming Friday: Check out what’s up with Atlanta University Center rivals Clark Atlanta and Morehouse in a preview of Saturday’s showdown. Also, I’ll give my pick to win that game - and all other Black College games - in the picks of the week.

Tuskegee rallies, Albany State rolls
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Tuskegee won its 22nd straight game Saturday in its victory over Morehouse. And it was the fifth straight win for the Golden Tigers in the long-running series between the teams.
But the Maroon Tigers didn’t go down without a fight in the 42-27 loss. In fact, the boys from the ATL held a 14-7 halftime lead against the defending black college champs, but I guess the champs found a way to come back while not playing their best - and they received a little turnover help from Morehouse according to the AJC’s Tom Stinson, who covered the matchup in Columbus, Ga. (read the story).
The Golden Tigers will take their streak into Saturday’s SIAC showdown against Albany State, which tuned up for the contest with a 34-20 homecoming victory over Clark Atlanta.
Check out some of the other black college football results from Saturday:
• Grambling did its thing on the road in its win over Alabama A&M.
• Delaware State bounced back from its MEAC loss to highly-touted Hampton to defeat Bethune-Cookman on the road.
• South Carolina State remained perfect in the MEAC with its close victory over Norfolk State.
• Alcorn State defeated Miss. Valley and Jackson State upended Ark.-Pine Bluff in other SWAC action.
• Morgan State routed N.C. A&T in a game that’s important because it helped the Bears even their MEAC record at 1-1. But it also gave me an opportunity to give a shout out to my mom, who’s celebrating her golden anniversary as a graduate of Morgan State. Go Bears and go mom!
So, what HBCU game did you attend over the weekend and what weere your impressions? Let us know what you think.

Winston-Salem no match for FAMU
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
And now for this weekend’s Black College football picks:
Winston-Salem State at Florida A&M: Take this one to the bank. The Rattlers will rebound from last week’s loss by shutting out Winston-Salem State. FAMU will be so dominant that …. okay, I guess I can’t fool anyone. The Rattlers defeated the Rams 23-0 Thursday in a performance so dominating that Winston-Salem was held to less than 100 yards of total offense and didn’t mount a serious scoring threat in the game.
Clark Atlanta at Albany State: It’s homecoming in A-town and take the Rams big in the SIAC matchup.
Morehouse vs. Tuskegee in Columbus, Ga.: Tuskegee is riding a 21-game winning streak and has won the last four in the series. Both streaks will remain intact as Golden Tigers roll.
Grambling at Alabama A&M : Picked against Grambling last week and the Tigers promptly gave Prairie View the beatdown in Dallas. Contrary to popular belief, I’m not crazy - I’ll take Grambling on the road.
Fayetteville State at Shaw: Fayetteville State can put itself in the driver’s seat in the CIAA Western Division with the victory. Shaw hopes to bounce back after last week’s stunning loss to St. Aug, and take the Bears to win at home.
Winner/Loser
Benedict/Lane
Bethune-Cookman/Delaware State
Central State/Langston
Elizabeth City State/Bowie State
Fort Valley/Kentucky State
Jackson State/Ark. Pine Bluff
Lincoln (Pa.)/Virginia Union
Livingstone/Chowan
Miles/Concordia
Millersville/Cheyney
Miss. Valley State/Alcorn State
North Carolina A&T/Morgan State
N.C. Central/Presbyterian
Prairie View/Alabama State
Saint Augustine’s/Johnson C. Smith
Saint Paul’s/Virginia State
Savannah State/Charleston Southern
South Carolina State/Norfolk State
Southern/Texas Southern
Stillman/Edward Waters
West Virginia State/Seton Hill

Reid finds a home at Texas Southern
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Notable in last week’s Texas Southern’s 63-39 loss to Texas State was the performance of Texas Southern quarterback Bobby Reid, who passed for 481 yards and four touchdowns and rushed for another score in the loss. Reid’s passing total was the highest in the SWAC since the 507-yard effort from Grambling’s Bruce Eugene in 2005.
And yes, it’s the same Bobby Reid who played at Oklahoma State last season and was the subject of OSU coach Mike Gundy’s highly-publicized rant against a newspaper columnist (see the video) . Reid would later say in an ESPN the Magazine article that Gundy’s rant was “all a big show” and “didn’t feel genuine” and he eventually left Oklahoma State, applied and later withdrew from the NFL Draft and landed at Texas Southern.
Five things to look for this weekend in Black College football:
Keeping it at home in the SWAC: This will be the only weekend of the season where all 10 SAWC teams will meet in head-to-head action. Southern hosts Texas Southern in a matchup that features the top two quarterbacks statistically in the conference — Texas Southern’s Reid, the reigning SWAC offensive player of the week following his effort against Texas State, and Southern’s Bryant Lee. Alabama A&M, tied for first in the Eastern Division, hosts a Grambling squad which routed Prairie View in its last game.
Sunday afternoon football in Raleigh, N.C.: Fayetteville State and Shaw square off in a key CIAA Western Division contest. Fayetteville State, currently tied with Livingstone at 3-0 in the division with Shaw third at 2-1, is ranked fourth in one of the four Division II Super Regional polls this week. (View the poll in PDF form).
Can South Carolina State keep it going?: The Bulldogs (4-2, 2-0 MEAC) won at FAMU last week and host Norfolk State in their homecoming game before an open date. Upcoming for S.C. State - Oct. 25 at home against MEAC front-runner Hampton.
Getting Ram tough in Albany: Albany State, which improved to 4-1 after last week’s 35-14 win over Stillman, hosts Clark Atlanta in its homecoming game with next week’s SIAC showdown at Tuskegee on the horizon.
Another Classic game for Tuskegee: One week after winning the Circle City Classic in Indianapolis, Tuskegee will put its 21-game winning streak on the line Saturday in the 73rd Morehouse-Tuskegee Classic in Columbus, Ga. Tuskegee has won the last four in the series, including 33-10 last season.

Thank goodness for Tuskegee, N.C. Central
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Ouch!
Not a good week for picking winners.
Of the six games highlighted going into the weekend, only two of my picks prevailed. After having some success in the first week, I get two-thirds of my picks wrong? Thirty-three percent is good if you’re a hitter in Major League baseball, but not too many other places.
• Tuskegee came through by defeating Alabama A&M in the Circle City Classic. QB Jacary Atkinson was the truth for the Tigers, throwing for two touchdowns and running for another.
More than 47,000 watched the game at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, the new home of the NFL’s Colts.
• North Carolina Central held on the defeat N. Carolina A&T in the 80th game of their long series. What better way to get your first win of the season than to beat your rival?
Well, that was the end of my success over the weekend. I picked the eventual losing team in the next four games ….
• Should’ve taken the advice of my co-worker who told me that Hampton would defeat Delaware State despite the game being on the road. I’ll listen next time.
• Playing on the road also didn’t stop South Carolina State from remaining unbeaten in the MEAC after its win over FAMU.
• After winning three straight on the road, Clark Atlanta had nearly 18,000 in the house in its three-point loss to Savannah State.
• Prairie View had the big offensive numbers, but it was Grambling who stole the show in its 40-16 victory before more than 54,000 at the State Fair Classic in Dallas.
So, what did you think about last weekend’s games? Did Tuskegee cement its claim as the top black college team with its impressive win?
Let me know what you think.

Look for Tuskegee to roll in Indy
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
And now for this weekend’s picks …..
Tuskegee vs. Alabama A&M in Circle City Classic: Tuskegee had a scare last week, winning by four at Fort Valley State, but the top-ranked HBCU sqaud should not have any problems with the SWAC member in Indianapolis.
Prairie View vs. Grambling in State Fair Classic: The Cotton Bowl in Dallas will be the site of the showdown between SWAC members. Grambling’s 3-2 with a defense that has allowed only seven points in its three wins. Don’t sleep on Prairie View, which has a 4-0 record and has been scoring in big numbers. This isn’t the Prairie View of old, so don’t be surprised when the Panthers win to extend their streak.
Hampton at Delaware State: Two of the three unbeaten teams in the MEAC square off in Dover, Del. The Pirates have dominated the recent series, winning 10 of the last 12, but the Hornets won at Hampton last season en route to a perfect conference record. Take Delaware State at home in a close one.
South Carolina State at Florida A&M : Matchup between the teams ranked second and sixth in this week’s Sheridan Broadcast Network Black College poll. The Bulldogs (3-2, 1-0 in MEAC) join Hampton and Delaware State as unbeaten MEAC teams heading into the weekend, and the Dogs will suffer their first conference loss as the Rattlers prevail at home.
Savannah State at Clark Atlanta: Savannah State lost to previously-winless Howard last weekend while the Panthers won their fourth straight with a victory at Miles. Homecoming will be tight at CAU as the Panthers win again.
North Carolina A&T vs. N.C. Central: The 80th meeting between the long-time rivals will be held at Memorial Stadium in Charlotte. A&T has dominated the series, winning 14 of the last 17, but Central has won the last two - and should make it three in a hard-fought game.
Other games …..
Winner/Loser
Fort Valley State/Lane
Tennessee State/Tenn.-Martin
West Alabama/Concordia
Kentucky State/Central State
Winston-Salem State/Howard
Albany State/Stillman
New Mexico State/Alcorn State
Fayetteville State/Chowan

Johnson C. Smith/Livingstone
Virginia Union/Saint Paul’s
Bethune-Cookman/Morgan State

HBCU teams ‘taking over’ the NFL
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Five things to look for in HBCU football this weekend ….
‘NFL’ teams for one day: Tuskegee and Alabama A&M will meet Saturday in the Circle City Classic at the new home of the Indianapolis Colts - and the game will be televised live on the NFL Network. Tuskegee takes a break from SIAC play, where it has won its four games by a combined 133-37, to face the Bulldogs of the SWAC, who have won their last two after opening the season with three straight losses.
Clark Atlanta goes for another win: The Panthers of the SIAC have won their last four games, including three straight on the road. Clark Atlanta returns home Saturday looking to extend its winning streak in its homecoming game against Savannah State.
Can FAMU handle its busy couple of weeks? Fresh off their Atlanta Classic win over Tennessee State, the Rattlers prepare to play two games in only six days - Saturday vs. South Carolina State and Oct. 9 vs. Winston-Salem State. FAMU appears to be on a roll - it has averaged more than 34 points in its four games - and both games are in Tallahassee.
Can Tennessee State bounce back? The previously-unbeaten Tigers lost to FAMU last weekend in the Atlanta Football Classic for the seventh straight year. Although they lost bragging rights in the Classic game for another year, the loss didn’t impact their record in the Ohio Valley Conference, which is 1-0 heading into Saturday’s key conference game at Tennessee-Martin (4-1 overall, 2-0 OVC).
Will a week off hurt Hampton? The Pirates (3-1, 2-0 MEAC) had scored 82 points in wins over Howard and North Carolina A&T before last week’s open date. The MEAC front-runner travels to Dover, Del. Saturday to meet Delaware State, which dropped a non-conference game to Central Connecticut State last week.
What other weekend HBCU games are you interested in talking about - and why? Let the discussion begin.
