Lingering thoughts from the weekend
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Sorry guys, have been a little under the weather and I apologize for the delay in updating the blog.
Had some interesting outcomes over the weekend, huh? Did anyone think South Carolina State would defeat Hampton as bad as it did? Looks like the Bulldogs are for real big time …
Another week, another victory by Tuskegee. The Golden Tigers seem to keep rolling and rolling … is there anyone on the schedule capable of slowing them down?
Here’s a look at this week’s Sheridan Black College poll with the Shaw Bears of the CIAA making their first appearance of the season:
Team/Record
Tuskegee/8-0
South Carolina State/6-2
Grambling State/6-2
Florida A&M/6-2
Prairie View/7-1
Hampton/5-2
Bethune-Cookman/5-2
Tennessee State/6-2
Southern/4-4
Shaw/6-3
What are your thoughts on the new poll? Are you surprised that a 4-4 Southern squad is still ranked, or does that speak to the level of competition that the Jags face in the SWAC?
Should South Carolina State have jumped to the No. 1 spot after its dominating win over previously third-ranked Hampton? Or did Tuskegee solidify its No. 1 ranking with another victory — its 24th straight?
Let me know what you think about the rankings or about any else going on in Black College football.
Miss any scores from the weekend? Check out the good folks at Onnidan’s HBCU Sports Online for all of the Black College scores from last weekend and this weekend’s schedule.

TSU! Prime example of what happens when you don’t come to play. Losing to SEMO was unacceptable.
I still would keep Tuskegee atop this “mythical” poll but SCSU closed the gap.

By the way, thanks for the blog. It’s good to see the AJC provide a forum for Black College football. I’m a Tennessee State fan and I hated to hear that the Big Blue lost over the weekend. As for who should be No.1, I think Tuskegee should stay there as long as they are winning. Hard to knock a team out that hasn’t lost, right?

Would love to see South Carolina State as the No. 1 team but if Tuskegee keeps winning, I guess they’ll stay No.1. Just long as we keep proving to Hampton and the rest of the MEAC that we are No. 1, the polls really don’t matter to me.

Nothing against the SIAC, but I feel SC State deserves to be No. 1 after beating Hampton. I feel the MEAC is the toughest Black College Conferece and also feel FAMU should be ranked below Hampton who only has one lost in the Conference, there are 4 schools in the MEAC standings ranked above FAMU, but we still have love for Joe Taylor, he did big things at Hampton!

SCSU deserves to be ranked number one even though you cannot take away TU’s undefeated season(that deserves to be acknowledged). SCSU’s 2 losses come against stronger Div 1 competition in Clemson and UCF. The common opponent between SCSU and TU is Benedict and SCSU beat them 42-3 while Tuskeegee beat them 37-14. My vote is for SCSU.

GTC, Tuskegee was up 37-0 at halftime and did not play the starters in the second half. Benedict’s 2td’s came late in the 4th. TU should be #1. Remember they have not lost since 2006.

wlc, the true test of the great teams are how their second and third string performs(meaning TU would have lost 0-14 without their starters in). im sure scsu didnt play their starters the whole games so your rebuttle is irrelevant, especially since its my opinion. thanks though

The Tuskegee University Golden Tigers are the #1 HBCU football team in the United States of America.
Tuskegee has 24 straight football games. It is the longest winning streak of any division in college football.
They are the defending Black National Champions and they are the winningest team in HBCU football history with over 600 victories.
Their record over the past 10 football seasons (1998-2008)is an amazing 108 wins/18 losses. They have won 2 National Black Championships and have 2 undefeated seasons (12-0) in the past five seasons.
Let’s take a look at the MEAC teams.
South Carolina State = They have a record of 13 wins/6 losses over the past 2 seasons. Their record over the past 10 seasons (1998-2008) is 69 wins/48 losses over that period. Tuskegee won 39 more football games over this period. Now SC State has the audacity to claim they are the best team in HBCU. What exactly is their logic for this assumption.
Hampton = Their record over the past two seasons is 11 wins/7 losses.
Morgan State = Their record is 17 wins/ 24 losses over the past four seasons. Coming into this year they had 3 straight losing seasons.
Delaware State = They have a record of 4 wins/4 losses in their last 8 games including a including a humilating 44-7 loss to in-state rival Delaware. They were winless (0-11) as recent as 2004.
FAMU = They have been up and down the past several seasons and have not been consistent winners.
Bethune-Cookman = They to have been inconsistent with up and down seasons.
North Carolina AT&T = They had a six(6) losing streak before beating Howard last week. They to are up and down.
Norfolk State = They have lost many, many more games than they have won recently. They are currently on a 5 game losing streak.
Howard = They have lost many, many more games than they have won recently. They currently have 1 win/6 losses.
COULD SOMEONE PLEASE TELL ME IN A LOGICAL MANNER WHY THE MEAC IS CONSIDERED SUCH A DOMINANT FOOTBALL CONFERENCE.
The Tuskegee Golden Tigers are the Golden Boys of Black College Football.
W A T C H for our blog next week as we analyze SWAC football teams.
BASKETBALL fans circle your calendar for December 17, 2008. That is when the Tuskegee Golden Tigers (SIAC) travel 20 miles down the road to play the Auburn Tigers(SEC)in a historic basketball game. Tuskegee coached by Alabama legend Leon Douglas could shock the world.
