MEAC showdown - Hampton vs. S.C. State
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
The showdown in the MEAC has arrived — South Carolina State will host Hampton Saturday in a game likely to decide the conference champion.
The teams are ranked second and third in this week’s Sheridan Black College poll and both are undefeated in the conference. The Pirates are embracing the importance of the game, with junior linebacker Michael Swett calling it ‘championship week’ in a story in this week’s Newport News (Va.) Daily Press.
South Carolina State coach Buddy Pough says that Hampton’s ‘the big dog right now in our league’ and knows the Bulldogs must win Saturday to win the MEAC.
“We’re the last two teams without a loss in the league and that makes it imperative that we win,” Pough told the Orangeburg (S.C.) Times and Democrat.
South Carolina State has won the last two games in the series, and should make it three with a close victory at home.
Other games to watch for this weekend …
Alabama A&M vs. Alabama State: The long-time rivals meet in the annual Magic City Classic in Birmingham. Legion Field is expected to be packed for the 67th annual game, and with actress Vivica A. Fox as the ambassador for the event, it’s definitely worth the price of admission. On the field, Alabama A&M has won three straight and five of the last six - and should win again on Saturday.
Tennessee State at SE Missouri: Let’s not forget about Big Blue since it doesn’t play in an HBCU conference. The Tigers are the only unbeaten team in the Ohio Valley Conference, and should remain that way after Saturday’s road win.
Albany State at Morehouse: The Rams should bounce back from last week’s loss to Tuskegee - and spoil Morehouse’s homecoming - with the win at B.T. Harvey Stadium.
