SIAC showdown among weekend’s top games
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Things to look for in Black College football this weekend:
‘Skegee hosts SIAC showdown: The top two teams in the SIAC meet in Tuskegee, Ala. as the streaking Golden Tigers, winners of 22 straight since ‘06, hosts the Rams of Albany State. Tuskegee (6-0, 5-0 SIAC) showed its championship mettle last weekend by rebounding from a halftime deficit to thump Morehouse while Albany State (5-1, 4-1) has shown it is Ram tough by defeating Stillman and Clark Atlanta after its upset loss to Benedict.
Talented QBs on display: Keep an eye on the quarterbacks as Southern hosts Florida A&M in a SWAC vs. MEAC battle. Jags QB Bryant Lee had 421 yards passing and rushing, five TDs and no picks in last week’s win over Texas Southern while FAM’s Curtis Pulley doesn’t have the big numbers, but has made big plays all season - just ask Tennessee State.
Battle of the Bay: The Tidewater area’s finest meet this weekend as Hampton and Norfolk State meet in the Battle of the Bay in Hampton. The Pirates (4-1, 3-0 MEAC) look to hold on to first in the conference with next week’s MEAC showdown in Orangeburg, S.C. against South Carolina State looming large. Norfolk State nearly put a damper on the Hampton-S.C. State matchup, taking the Bulldogs to the limit before falling 24-23 on the road.
So, let’s open the discussion and talk about which game of the weekend is most important - and why. Also, who has been the most impressive Black College player that you’ve seen this season - and what has he done that has impressed you the most.
Coming Friday: Check out what’s up with Atlanta University Center rivals Clark Atlanta and Morehouse in a preview of Saturday’s showdown. Also, I’ll give my pick to win that game - and all other Black College games - in the picks of the week.
