Notable in last week’s Texas Southern’s 63-39 loss to Texas State was the performance of Texas Southern quarterback Bobby Reid, who passed for 481 yards and four touchdowns and rushed for another score in the loss. Reid’s passing total was the highest in the SWAC since the 507-yard effort from Grambling’s Bruce Eugene in 2005.
And yes, it’s the same Bobby Reid who played at Oklahoma State last season and was the subject of OSU coach Mike Gundy’s highly-publicized rant against a newspaper columnist (see the video) . Reid would later say in an ESPN the Magazine article that Gundy’s rant was “all a big show” and “didn’t feel genuine” and he eventually left Oklahoma State, applied and later withdrew from the NFL Draft and landed at Texas Southern.
Five things to look for this weekend in Black College football:
Keeping it at home in the SWAC: This will be the only weekend of the season where all 10 SAWC teams will meet in head-to-head action. Southern hosts Texas Southern in a matchup that features the top two quarterbacks statistically in the conference — Texas Southern’s Reid, the reigning SWAC offensive player of the week following his effort against Texas State, and Southern’s Bryant Lee. Alabama A&M, tied for first in the Eastern Division, hosts a Grambling squad which routed Prairie View in its last game.
Sunday afternoon football in Raleigh, N.C.: Fayetteville State and Shaw square off in a key CIAA Western Division contest. Fayetteville State, currently tied with Livingstone at 3-0 in the division with Shaw third at 2-1, is ranked fourth in one of the four Division II Super Regional polls this week. Can South Carolina State keep it going?: The Bulldogs (4-2, 2-0 MEAC) won at FAMU last week and host Norfolk State in their homecoming game before an open date. Upcoming for S.C. State - Oct. 25 at home against MEAC front-runner Hampton.
Getting Ram tough in Albany: Albany State, which improved to 4-1 after last week’s 35-14 win over Stillman, hosts Clark Atlanta in its homecoming game with next week’s SIAC showdown at Tuskegee on the horizon.
Another Classic game for Tuskegee: One week after winning the Circle City Classic in Indianapolis, Tuskegee will put its 21-game winning streak on the line Saturday in the 73rd Morehouse-Tuskegee Classic in Columbus, Ga. Tuskegee has won the last four in the series, including 33-10 last season.

I wondered what happened to Bobby Reid, glad to hear he’s doing well at Texas Southern. He’ll probably get drafted by the NFL next year.

Good to see some mention of Albany State. We’ll definitely beat CAU for homecoming and then we’ll beat Tuskegee next week and end their streak!!

I live in Texas. Reid was one of the better QBs in the Big 12. He was just coddled a little too much by his coaches. He was the highest rated high school player to ever committ to Oklahoma State. I think that they were afraid to tell him anything he didn’t want to hear. Combined with the fact he was always hurt with some small nagging injury.
The sad part was that his coach got rid of him at the first chance he had. Reid deserved better than that from the coach who faked that “I’m a man…I’m 40!” press conference.

I love the blog! My son Justin is a defensive line coach at Morgan State Univ. in Baltimore. I want to see more on Morgan State. Please do a story when Morgan State beats FAMU Nov. 1 on FAMU’s homecoming.
