HBCU teams ‘taking over’ the NFL

Five things to look for in HBCU football this weekend ….

‘NFL’ teams for one day: Tuskegee and Alabama A&M will meet Saturday in the Circle City Classic at the new home of the Indianapolis Colts - and the game will be televised live on the NFL Network. Tuskegee takes a break from SIAC play, where it has won its four games by a combined 133-37, to face the Bulldogs of the SWAC, who have won their last two after opening the season with three straight losses.

Clark Atlanta goes for another win: The Panthers of the SIAC have won their last four games, including three straight on the road. Clark Atlanta returns home Saturday looking to extend its winning streak in its homecoming game against Savannah State.

Can FAMU handle its busy couple of weeks? Fresh off their Atlanta Classic win over Tennessee State, the Rattlers prepare to play two games in only six days - Saturday vs. South Carolina State and Oct. 9 vs. Winston-Salem State. FAMU appears to be on a roll - it has averaged more than 34 points in its four games - and both games are in Tallahassee.

Can Tennessee State bounce back? The previously-unbeaten Tigers lost to FAMU last weekend in the Atlanta Football Classic for the seventh straight year. Although they lost bragging rights in the Classic game for another year, the loss didn’t impact their record in the Ohio Valley Conference, which is 1-0 heading into Saturday’s key conference game at Tennessee-Martin (4-1 overall, 2-0 OVC).

Will a week off hurt Hampton? The Pirates (3-1, 2-0 MEAC) had scored 82 points in wins over Howard and North Carolina A&T before last week’s open date. The MEAC front-runner travels to Dover, Del. Saturday to meet Delaware State, which dropped a non-conference game to Central Connecticut State last week.

What other weekend HBCU games are you interested in talking about - and why? Let the discussion begin.
