Who’s going to win this weekend?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Let’s try our hand at picking this weekend’s HBCU games. And don’t forget to send us your photos by clicking here and following the instructions.
Florida A&M vs. Tennessee State at Georgia Dome: Battle of the Bands? I’ll take …. nope, not falling for that one. On the field, the Rattlers have won the last six, but the streak ends this year. Take TSU.
Morehouse vs. Prairie View: The House takes a trip west to compete in the Angel City Classic in Los Angeles. The Maroon Tigers have won three straight since their season-opening loss while their opponent, Prairie View, is off to a 3-0 start - and should make it four with a win.
Clark Atlanta at Miles: Clark Atlanta has won three straight and Miles has lost three straight. Both streaks will reach four as the Panthers roll.

Bethune-Cookman/Norfolk State
Kentucky State/Stillman

I have mad love for all HBCU’s they have made many of us into the great men/women that we are. But let’s not get it twisted. FAMU vs. tsu is the best classic going today. And to break it down even further, FAMU is the best HBCU going today. As 84Hondarida said so eloquently earlier; “FAAAAAAAAMM-UUUUUUUU…FAAAAAAAAAMM-UUUUUU…FAAAAAM G**MN UUUUUUUUUU….the Rattlers will strike…strike…and strike again!!!” The streak will continue this year.

HBCU alum, why is that person KC posting on our blog? In case you failed reading 101 at UGA, the title of this blog is HBCU Football: Who’s going to win this weekend?
Please find another place to share your ideas and thoughts. We really don’t care.

KC, we like to watch games where the players actually graduate. Not the 9% of players that normally sit on the bench.

I must admit I never heard of a HBCU until I moved from the Western US to Atlanta. I somewhat understand the need for their establishment, but why do they still exist - tradition, history,???

HBCU — are you saying they should shut down?? Why don’t they shut down Brigham Young? I understand the need for their establishment, but why does it still exist?
They still exist because they are institutions of higher learning… that’s why. My great-grandfather, grandfather, and father ALL GRADUATED from Morehouse, I went to Spelman (graduated in ‘86 with Honors), and my son plans to go to Morehouse in 2012.
HBCU’s still exist for the same reason Yale & Harvard still exist. They are HISTORICALLY Black Colleges… that doesn’t mean they are EXCLUSIVELY Black Colleges. There IS a difference.
(My apologies if I seem curt… when white people ask black folks “why” they have certain things, it ticks me off.) During the time when my great-grandfather couldn’t even APPLY to a white college, he had to go where he could and there is where he was embraced and loved. He passed that love onto his family.
HBCU’s are our legacy to our children. They were created out of necessity by people who only had tenacity, drive, ambition, and dreams. Why even ASK to dismantle something like that???

HBCU…I was a proud member and starter (Inside Linebacker #63) for the 1971 Texas Southern University “Fighting” Tigers…This was the year we upset #1(Sheridan Poll) Tenn. St. that was led by the late “Jefferson Street” Joe Gilliam and Ed “Too Tall” Jones…As I rememeber, this was the only lost these men experienced during their careers at that great institution under Coach Meredith…Hard to beleive 37 years have gone by, time flys when you are…Keep the HBCU footbal alive…Thank-you…

“Whatever” and “SW” - my apologies. Being a recent transplant to the “south” a lot of this is new to me and I’m trying to learn and understand the history and culture.
That said your being “curt” and SW’s comment only shifts the perception and assumptions to reality!!!

HBCU - That’s YOUR perception and YOUR reality. You’re new to the South, so you don’t know that “we” have to justify our very existence to some people here. Don’t be offended, darling. Just know you moved to a land filled with landmines and that’s divided deeply by race. Black folks have always had to vigorously defend themselves - while we stand by and have whites call us paranoid and “overly sensitive” and tell us to “get over it”.
So with THAT being said… Welcome to Atlanta.

Never heard of HBCU — it must make you feel like a real macho man to call a lady out to fight at a Red Lobster! A cheap restaurant for a cheap person. Like I said… you can call ANYONE out on a blog. My elderly grandmother is tough on the computer. You create no fear here dear. My husband played for the Jets for over 7 years — I don’t need a gun… I have him.

fact of the matter is these teams/players cannot compete on the athletic, nor academic playing field with others outside of the HUBC. This is a racist org that needs to identify themselves with a conference or independent in the NCAA. Keep this “black” labeling up and nothing will improve.

I graduated from Southern University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. In football, Southern competes in Division 1-AA (I forget the goofy new name for it) as part of the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC). I can’t speak for all schools and conferences, but Southern and most other SWAC schools face non-HBCU opponents on a yearly basis in their non-conference games. The SWAC may not be the SEC, but it is not grossly inferior to any other Division 1-AA conference.
I think some of the comments come from both hate and a lack of knowledge. I find it amusing that someone would be quick to call a SWAC or MEAC school “inferior” but would not say that same about predominantly-white institutions that happen to compete on the same level. To call schools like Southern, Grambling State, Florida A&M, Tennessee State, and the like “inferior” while not doing the same for other Division 1-AA schools such as Georgia Southern, McNeese State, Youngstown State, and the like is both backhanded and shortsighted. By the way, one of the schools in question in this weekend’s Classic (Tennessee State) is a member of the Ohio Valley Conference, which consists mainly of predominantly-white institutions.
I do not see any self-segregation or hatred. If anything, I see tradition. Taking race out of the equation, it is traditional for schools such as Southern, Grambling State, Jackson State, etc. to be in the same conference due to rivalry and proximity just as it is traditional for schools such as Georgia, Alabama, Florida, etc. to be in the same conference for similar reasons.
I am not going to call anyone a racist, but sometimes race tends to cloud logic for some folks.
