Are you a dessert-aholic?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
With so much chocolate floating around after Valentine’s Day, I began wondering how may people regularly eat dessert as part of a meal at home.
I have to admit, while I have a lot of food weaknesses, dessert is not really one of them. In our house, my husband who is tall and lean, is more of the dessert fan. While he usually treats himself to a small bowl of ice cream at night, it’s while watching TV rather than right after a meal. He’s also addicted to Jujy Fruit candy and can easily go through a box of those a night too. His idea of going on a diet is skipping ice cream one or two nights a week.
But, in general, unless I am entertaining or testing a specific recipe, cakes and pies are occasional treats in our house. I usually try to keep a batch of homemade cookies in my freezer, but tend to use them as a lunchbox treat, when I know my kids need the extra energy to get them through the day. At night, we tend to regulate dessert based on whether the kids have had exercise that day. Or if the dinner has been a light one and everyone deserves a little treat.
What about you? Do you like to have something sweet to finish a meal? Do you even go further and follow the credo, “life is too short, eat dessert first”?

I’m not much of a chocolate fan, but I do routinely have a sweet item to round out lunch and dinner. My meals just don’t feel complete without it!

I like to finish lunch and dinner with a piece of fruit.
Later in the evening, I will sometimes treat myself to a small (fun size) piece of chocolate or one cookie.
I weigh myself every day and if the scale is up a bit, I’ll forego the treat and have some warm herbal tea if I get hungry.

Yes I must confess I like dessert better than any other food. It is my comfort food and a bit of an excitement to me. Cake is just an excuse for frosting, which must be a 50-50 ratio cake to frosting. I must work hard to keep it to a minimum, and if I didn’t work out regularly I would look a lot different than my slim self.

No question - I grew up sneaking chocolate syrup into my special K and raisin bran! I don’t do that anymore - and now, I’m trying to lose some weight for my upcoming wedding - but, it’s tough to forgo those yummy treats after lunch - am I the only one that eats a Lean Cuisine and then has Butterfinger bar? I’m working on it though…I had a low-fat/low-cal mango and cream bar instead of chocolate and the rest of the house tonight :)

Yes, I’m a dessert-aholic. My cats and I just love to sit around and eat lots of great chocolate treats. Alone. After a long day of “shopping therapy.” Because I’m also a shop-aholic.
I’m also a loser.

If I could take away all food and leave just chocolate and ice cream, that would be a truly wonderful life to me!!

Im a desser a holi. My excuse is that Im am allergic REALLY to apples melons and some veges. So what else is left but cakes cookies and pies.
It is the chemicals and perservatives they add to fruit and vege crops. I love them but cant eat them in the last ten years. Or, just cant risk a trip to the emergency room due to man made poisons..
My motto …. Buttercream or Bust

I think if I could survive on Chocolate alone wihtout getting fat…I would! I love dessert! I would choose it over any food. I have a true addiction. I work out 6 days a weekand I am a belly dancer and I am not skinny yet! LOL I know it’s because of my sweet tooth. But still I can not stop! I tried to stop cold turkey…no avail. I am trying the only in moderation…but what that means to my brain…and my actual will power and cravings is a whole other story! It’s like crack to a crackhead!

I am like your husband and look forward to a bowl of ice cream at night while I watch TV. To break the fat intake routine this will be the 2nd lenten season I will give up ice cream which means 47 nights without ice cream. I have always eaten ice cream even since being a kid. I also love sweets, snickers is my favorite by all chocolate is my weakness.

Nice to see I am not alone. I don’t keep sweets in the house because DH has some health issues and needs to watch it, and I don’t want it either because I overindulge. We almost never have dessert because we don’t need it but very occasionally I will bring something home - just a small portion, not a whole item. But if I really want something, I have a car and there are stores around, so not keeping it around never stopped me. This sounds stupid, but eating real slowly sometimes will keep me from eatng too much sweets, because I tend to inhale when it tastes too good. Occasionally I will make a key lime pie to take to a group meeting. My pie is killer. I look forward to special occasions like group socials because there will be lots of desserts there, and our annual church missions conference for the same reason. I am so bad.

We don’t always have desserts, but if we are having a special meal or having company, I try to make something. Sunday we had crepes, ice cream and flaming Bananas Foster, Monday we had Honey Vanilla pound cake with strawberries and cream. All homemade! My daddy is suddenly living alone, and I’m trying to add to his diet - but killing mine!

My gosh…Yes, I LOVE desserts. My weakness are homemade cakes and cookies. I have something sweet everynight after dinner, but I do eat them in moderation and workout 5 days a week to manage my weight. Cookies serve not only as a comfort food, but also as a stress-reliever, without them I think I might become a serial killer..LOL.

Oh…I LOVE dessert, that is the only reason to eat supper as far as I’m concerned! Sometimes, I’ve actually just skipped supper and had dessert! When I was pregnant with my son, I had to have dessert from every single place we went! Sadly, it hasn’t stopped! LOL! I am getting better at limiting my intake of sweets, but boy is it rough. I have found though, that if I have a lot of it around, I eat much less of it! Weird huh?
