What makes a foodie?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
It’s funny. When people find out I’m in a food related field, they love to talk about their favorite restaurants or drop the name of a chef they met. It seems everyone loves food and many people consider themselves pretty savvy.
On vacation in Nicaragua, I met a couple from New York. The woman had gone to a hotel management school that included restaurant courses. She told me she was a “foodie” explaining she loved cooking and was interested in anything related to the food industry.
Several times she and her beau skipped the hotel breakfast to eat in the market. Whenever I asked her what she had she said, “the usual breakfast stuff.” That’s when I realized, for me, what truly defines a “foodie.” It also made me realize she wasn’t one. When asked what you ate, foodies can’t stop themselves. They give you a blow-by-blow of what was served, what worked and what didn’t, how it was presented and much more minutia than you ever wanted to hear. It’s like with anything you love. I remember my parents after a round of golf. They verbally replayed the entire 18 holes, remembering every shot on every hole. That’s how “foodies” are. They don’t just eat, they eat and tell. They can’t help themselves.
Do you agree? What do you think makes a foodie?

I totally agree with you! I am an all out foodie and I am constantly describing, in detail, what I prepared or what was prepared for me in a restaurant. I am constantly regarded as a foodie by my family and co-workers.

My husband said I’m a foodie because whenever I plan a trip, finding the best cuisine is usually my top priority. I’m planning Disney right now and I immediately made dining plans before I made the theme park plans. LOL

I agree with your description of a “foodie.” It describes me to a tee!

I always like to cleanse my palate of other flavors before trying something new. Not many restaurants in the US offer ‘palate cleansing’ foods which is a shame b/c we have some wonderful retaurants in Atl now. In the morning I snack on a few peanuts to clear the toothpaste/mouthwash flavor to really savour my coffee. Does that count as a foodie?

For me a foodie is someone who loves all things edible or at least tries them once. A foodie is NOT pretentious or snobby about food. My major pet peeve is an adult who has stunted taste buds and is narrow minded about food. Sitting down for a meal with someone who recites all the things that s/he doesn’t like or won’t eat is akin to torture.

I’m fanatical foodie. I love to cook. I strive to make each meal the best meal I’ve ever made. The downside of being a foodie is when I’m at a restaurant, I can never really enjoy myself. If I can make the meal better than the chef, I feel like I’ve wasted money. If the meal is outstanding, I feverishly break the dish down to figure out it’s components. Sometimes it’s better to enjoy the people that surround you than to obsess if the spice is cumin or marjoram.
