What are you cooking for the holidays?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
While Thanksgiving has a more or less traditional menu with turkey as the centerpiece, for most of us, Christmas and Hanukkah dinners leave more room for creative interpretation.
I have to confess, this year I will be away for the holidays so for the first time in a long time I won’t be cooking. But when I am here, I always do vary it. I tend to make a slow-cooking aromatic roast of some sort and some really yummy type of potatoes, either a gratin or crispy roast ones. The rest is totally up in the air.
Have you planned your holiday meal out? Do you have a traditional menu that you repeat or do you branch out? What’s cooking at your house this year?

Growing up, our tradition was the same meals as Thanksgiving. We had turkey, ham, dressing, etc. However that has changed over the last few years.
Our new tradition is a big pot of Seafood Chowder and homemade bread on Christmas Eve (as lunch before church). Then, on Christmas Day, I cook Prime Rib. We usually have potatoes and collard greens (it is the south right????) and some other kind of side.

Our plans have changed this year since our grown children have other things they’re doing.I am taking my husband to Gatlinburg,Tn. on the twenty-third.take him to all the Christmas shops, eat at one of the Places we love,Enjoy watching the families with little ones(maybe even buy a few toys for them).Look at all the lights. But after 42 years of marriage as long as we have each other we’re happy.I do miss cooking for my family though.

I am so sorry you have cancer, I will pray for you. I am also sorry you will be alone. Is there someone to reach out to. Those of us that have families and friends to spend the day with are truly blessed. I pray for God’s grace to keep you on your journey through cancer and the holidays.

I am cooking a ham Christmas Eve, and a turkey with my homemade stuffing and gravy Christmas Day. All the fixin’s, including fresh turnip greens, homemade biscuits (and my daughter uses last year’s gift to her to make homemade bread), potatoes (white & sweet), cranberry sauce, not to mention the homemade sweets/cookies/cakes/pies…especially my m-i-l’s recipe for buckeyes (homemade peanut butter cups)…YUM! No, we are not gluttons. Yes, I am feeding a very large family!!!

I have already had one Christmas dinner, this past Friday, before my parents went out of town. This is what I made: Spiral sliced ham with peach-bourbon glaze, green salad with pears and blue cheese, corn pudding, green beans, sweet potatoes with a gingersnap topping and eggnog truffles for dessert. It was my best meal yet, I think.

Muy family always does something different at Christmas so we will not have to eat turkey and dressing twice. Last year was a seafood theme. This year we are grilling… ribs, burgers, chicken… cajun style at that! Will still have the yummy desserts!
Mark, you are in my thoughts and prayers and all people in your dilema. May peace and happiness find you in spite of your circumstances. Everyone, don’t forget to do something for others and don’t forget the real meaning of the season… JESUS!

My sister and I are hosting a Christmas meal this year that will involve as little work as possible.
After Thanksgiving we’re still exhausted. Picked up the Honey Baked Ham this weekend. Since my sister’s daughter will be with her ex from noon on Christmas Eve through noon on Christmas Day, we”ll be spending the 24th making baked potato salad, my Mother’s Sunshine Jell-O salad, a crudité platter, rolls and sodas. We even bought the ice.
The buffet will be ready noon-ish when everyone shows up to exchange gifts at out house. Nothing too fussy and no set timetable.

Hi Mark. I partially understand how you feel. I too was diagnosed with cancer in August however I have many friends and family for support. I won’t be cooking a special dinner for Christmas. i have a chemo treatment on the 26th. Food hasn’t tasted right lately anyway. That’s not necessarily a bad thing. All it means is that the meds are working. You may be alone but don’t allow yourself to be lonely this holiday season. Pray for me and I’ll definitely pray for you.
HAPPY HOLIDAYS AND HAPPY COOKING to everybody else and have a safe and HAPPY NEW YEAR !!!!!!
