Who does the food shopping in your house?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
I must admit, during the last few trips to the supermarkets I have been shocked by all the men doing the main food shopping, often with kids in tow.
I know in the past my hubby has done that chore when pressed, but the list needs to be exact and even then he always seems to return with an unexpected amount of extraneous “football snacks.”
I guess I am not alone. In an interview with WebMD, David W. Stewart, the Robert E. Brooker Professor of Marketing the Marshall School of Business at the University of Southern California stated, “More and more men are picking up items at the grocery store.” But he notes, in most families — even those in which men buy the groceries — women still make the shopping decisions. Without a list, men get lost in today’s fast-paced supermarkets, says Stewart. (I bet those are fighting words to some guys out there!)
A recent article on MedicineNet.com reports that more than half of men say they do 60% or more of their family’s grocery shopping. Ironically, more than 85% of women say they do most of their family’s shopping so the numbers don’t exactly add up (what else is new when it comes to “he said/she said” debates).
Who pushes the cart in your house? Are decisions on what to buy shared by both parties or is one more likely to be “following orders”?

My wife does most of the shopping. This is due to my being busy on Saturdays more than anything else, and when my Saturday project is complete I hope to at least start going with her again. (she sucks at picking my fruits for the week)
I prefer to at least go with her to do the shopping so I can remember little things that we need to do a certain dish, I do most of the cooking.
If I’m going for fast shopping I go alone. She spends sooo much time looking at labels in exacting detail that I can skim labels and prices and come out ahead most times and get it done much quicker.

I sit down to my trusty computer and check the flyer from my favorite grocery store and decide what’s needed this week, and the quantity to buy.My wife and I then go together to do what I call,”shoot groceries”.I don’t know why it’s done this way,it just is.We’ve done this so many times we don’t need a list.We could probably shop with our eyes closed.

I usually do the shopping. If my husband goes( and he offers to go) he needs a list and I usually don’t write one. I shop on the fly. So I generally bear the burden. And I like to go on Friday night so I have everything I need for the weekend.

Not only do I do 99% of the grocery shopping in our household, I prefer to do it alone. If my husband is with me, he starts fussing about how long I’m taking before I can even get the cart out of corral and I end up forgetting 1/2 of what I need because I’m frustrated from dealing with him. If I go with my son, I end up spending twice what I meant to because he asks for something special on every aisle! LOL
On the rare occasions that I have to send my husband, I have to be very specific about what to get. If I just put tissue on the list he will buy a single roll. Once I forgot to get something to send for my son’s class party at school so I called my husband and asked him to pick up M&M’s. Despite the fact that I told him there were 18 kids in the class, he bought one single serving bag! When I fussed about it he said “Well you didn’t say I was supposed to buy enough for the whole class!” It’s not that he was trying to be cheap; his mind just doesn’t work like mine so he sincerely needed to be told to buy enough to go around.

Generally, I do the grocery shopping. If there is a huge list, my wife will join me as well. She rarely goes alone. I prefer to do the shopping because:
1) I tend to be more cost-conscious than my wife when picking out items 2) I am picky about certain products 3) She does most of the cooking, so I like to help out with this chore

My husband and I both do the shopping together if it’s during the week. I do occasionally go out on Saturday mornings by myself after we’ve created our shopping list together. Of course he was a chef many years ago so he can cook better than me anyway.

My husband does the shopping because he does the cooking too. I am lost in the grocery store, except in the fresh food section. He is even getting better and better at getting me the fat free vesions of things, I love it and him.

I usually do most of the food shopping. When my wife comes, we tend to spend more. I make a list of items we are out of (when we use it up) or items we are short on. It escapes my wife to put anything on the list unless I ask her. I check Publix on line, esp for 2 for 1 items, and Kroger on Sunday ads. I shop mostly at Publix but get specialty items at Whole foods and Fresh Market when we are in the mood. Kroger is good for canned goods when they are on sale. Most of the time their prices for staple items are higher than Publix. Stacey, get rid of the selfish whiner.

I am a man. I do the shopping, yes, for the whole week. I make a list. Sometimes I still forget things. Is that because I’m a man or because I’m human? It’s not that hard or consusing to be in a grocery store.
Stacey, your husband does not sound very smart….either that, or he is incredibly smart and is training you to aviod asking him to go to the store.

T-Rex…My husband is very intelligent but has no common sense. His mother teases him all the time saying that he doesn’t have sense enough to come in out of the rain. :-)

My wife and I do the shopping together. Sometimes one of us will have to stop after work for something, but we do all of our grocery shopping together. We also share the cooking duties…we each cook about half the meals or we cook together.

i’ve done all the food shopping for most of our 5.5 year marriage. i cook on sunday our breakfast, lunch and dinner for the whole week. shopping and doing all the cooking is exhausting, lol! my husband now does the shopping with a specific list. this arrangement is working very well for us!

I typically do the shopping…I have my favorite brands and will spend more time/money to get what I want, whereas my boyfriend will buy what’s cheapest or simply the first thing he sees. I did not know such rough toilet paper existed until I let him go to the store;)
I shouldn’t complain, though…he is a wonderful cook and can whip up a meal from nothing.

I do 99% of the shopping and 95% of the cooking - I don’t make lists and I don’t “get lost” in the supermarket. If my wife suggests or requests something, I get it.
It’s not a big deal. I like to eat therefore I like to cook therefore I like to pick the ingredients.

As soon as my husband retired we agreed that he would do the grocery shopping. I write a list, we go over it, he goes and gets the groceries. He goes twice a week, does the household errands at the same time. It’s saved us money. I check online for the ads. I go once a month with him as we do a big list once a month and it takes two of us. He does the normal stuff and I do the decision making odd items and holiday items. I’m glad he was willing. It sure makes it nice for me to have some alone time.

We usually go together, although he is much better at comparing prices from one week to the next. I just grab and go. I figure that we need it anyway so why look at the price.
My brother in law is a machine and he does the shopping on Monday after work. His efficiency is amazing. His engineering background really shines.

The very few times my husband goes he acts like he has done the world such a huge fav and that he is the only one who is ever put out by doing it. The same goes for laundry! He will help once every few months just to have the right to say “I do help out around the house”. I am getting pretty sick of it!

I do all of the cooking and therefor I do all of the buying as well. I cook without recipes and often make up dinners in the supermarket based on what is fresh and / or on sale. My wife’s mind just does not work in this way. If she were to go shopping for ingredients for a dinner, she would come back with literally everything, including pound bags of salt and pepper, she just does not know what we have in the house, or everything would be precooked and cut (yuck) because she dislikes cooking. I don’t mind this arrangement. Shopping is a time for me to spend alone or sometimes with one of my daughters. I try not to take both of them at once though.

I do 95% of the shopping and pretty much all the cooking. My wife likes occasionally to bake so she’ll tell me things she needs. Her limited food shopping is picking up something for her baking or items I ask her to get when she’s out.
I make my list out on a continuing basis, writing down items I’m using (to replace them) or items for a new recipe I want to try out. Major shopping is done on Wednesday’s to take advantage of Senior’s Day Discounts at Kroger and Publix. Saturday or Sunday is when I shop for fresh veggies and fruits to use until I do the major shopping on Wednesday.
Once a month I go to Harry’s and some small specialty stores to get some things not carried in the major grocery stores. Every three months or so, I drive out to Patak’s in Austell and buy fresh meats and then freeze them.
