Are your kids peanut butter purists

When it comes to certain foods, my kids don’t like to mess around with what works. One example is peanut butter. For them, it belongs either on a sandwich smeared with jam (or marshmallow fluff on a special occasion) or in a candy covered with chocolate.

It appears they aren’t the only ones who find this a winning combination. The Nielson Company, a marketing and media information company, predicts consumers will spend more than $87 million on peanut butter and nearly $13 million on jelly during the four-week period surrounding the first day of school. That’s a lot of PB and J.

EveningEdge has just published a PB&J package with recipes for a wide variety of variations on the traditional crunchy PB and Concord grape jelly. There’s even a recipe using pita bread. I have tried to get my kids to think more creatively about the combo, pairing frozen waffles with the combination or substituting jelly with drizzled honey and fresh banana or strawberry slices. I also tried a grilled peanut butter and chocolate chip sandwich, heating the chips until they got melted and gooey (or substituting nutella, the chocolate-hazelnut spread). While they were willing to “humor me” with a bite or two, there was no way that these combinations were going to displace “the usual” from their lunchboxes.

What about your kids? Are they willing to experiment with favorite foods or do they like to stay with what works? Would they be willing to swap out their favorite combination for one mentioned here?

I know I’m going to get quite a few “eeews” about this, but my favorite sandwich in the world is peanut butter and Baco’s. My mother introduced me to this when I was a child and I’ve never looked back. There’s something about the saltiness of the Baco’s that really makes it taste awesome.

Of course, I think my mother was desperate to get me to eat peanut butter because I wouldn’t eat what she put in front of me….wait for it…peanut butter & Miracle Whip. Now that is a gag-worthy sandwich. On the good side though, she didn’t make me eat her favorite; peanut butter, Miracle Whip & Onion!

I don’t have any children, but as a child, I was a very picky eater and peanut butter was one of the few things that I would eat. I still love it and eat it often. I like it on Ritz, graham and saltine crackers. Cinnamon bread is great, and add more raisins to make it even more special. Wheat bread is preferred, and a plain sandwich hits the spot. Toasting the bread on occasion is great, too. I love it especially with raisins. Any type of jelly is fine, but as adult, my favorite is guava. I never got into eating any fruit on the sandwiches. Crunchy is my favorite, but I’ll certainly eat creamy. Any brand is fine, and I usually reach for Jif. However, after trying Publix brand, I’m fairly convinced that Jif makes it. I can’t get into the reduced fat/sugar offerings at all.

Plain PB&J on wheat bread is the best. I’m not really brand conscious—just like to keep it simple.

Occasionally, I like to eat saltines with peanut butter or those nekot cookies.

A bit off topic but earlier post reminded me - my favorite was peanut butter with bologna, mustard and catsup. I also liked plain peanut butter and mustard. Don’t knock it till you try it - there is something about that combo that works!

Growing up, we had a few variations using PB. My favorite of course was PB with Grape Jelly. Running a very close second was PB and banana. Yummy. I did have an uncle that ate PB and mayo, though. He said the mayo kept the PB from sticking to the roof of his mouth. I have eaten mayo a few times on the above mentioned PB & Banana and it isn’t too bad. Sometimes in the morning my mom would make PB toast. Spread the PB and then toast it in the oven. Watch out though, it is very hot, and I have burnt myself lots of times.

I love PB&J sandwiches, but I only like Strawberry jelly on mine. I’ll eat grape if it’s the only thing offered but I really prefer strawberry. I also like PB & Banana sandwiches.

My granny used to sprinkle granulated sugar on her PB sandwiches (plain PB, no jelly) claiming that would keep the PB from sticking to the roof of her mouth. I think she just wanted an excuse to eat some extra sugar :)

@Hellbent- my mom tried to convice me a few weekends ago that PB & onion sandwiches were good. I thought she was crazy to even suggest such a thing! At least now I know she’s not the only one out there who tries to combine those two ingredients! She also claims PB & pineapple sandwiches are tasty, but I’m not really excited about trying that out either.

I think maybe Hellbent, Amy & emjay were all separated at birth. :-) My brother may be one of your long-lost siblings as he like dill pickle chips on his peanut butter sandwiches. I also eats PB and vanilla ice cream.

My son and I both love to eat peanut butter straight from a spoon. Mine has to be crunchy but my son also likes creamy. I prefer Jif but will buy other brands if the price/coupon is right. My son doesn’t care at all about brand. He loves the Jif with Honey but since I’ve only seen it in creamy, I haven’t tried it yet. I prefer to spread my my PB on either crackers or apple slices but when I get a craving for it with bread, I gotta have grape jam with it.

My kids love PB & J (grape or strawberry is fine), plus PB and Banana and PB and Honey. It’s usually on wheat bread or a wrap, although I occasionally cave in and buy “white wheat”.

My favorite is peanut butter, mayo and banana. @Rachel, your uncle wasn’t crazy. It’s really good. Something about that mayo…

I absolutely hate nuts but can eat peanuts two ways, one way is boiled, and the other is peanut butter. For me, I have tried many variations on the peanut butter and jelly over the years, as I am an avowed lover, but I cannot get over absolute cravings for what I had as a kid, which is creamy peanut butter and grape jelly on honey wheat bread (never liked white bread, but love hamburger and hotdog buns…never got into the why of that in therapy!)

For me, crunchy does what I hate about nuts, gets that texture of the nut in my teeth…yuck. So I stick with creamy. I have a fairly thick layer of peanut butter, and a thin layer of jelly…I don’t like it to drip out…that is too much jelly, but you do have to have just enough to make it “juicy”.

Also, a tip for you guys…take the knife and cut some lines halfway through the bread where you will put your jelly/jam. This allows the juices to soak into the bread a little easier, and also helps “hold it in place”…i.e., less drips.

This is OT, but when I was a kid (mid 70’s) my mother used to buy us chocolate peanut butter. It was called Koogly (or something like that) and had an owl on the jar. Do any of y’all remember it? They stopped selling it in our area in the 70’s but my sisters and I still remember it. I’ve never bought Nutella because it is expensive and I don’t really care for hazelnuts but if I ever catch a good sale and have a good coupon, I may just try it to see if it tastes like Koogly.

I remember years ago a company marketed peanut butter and grape jelly already mixed together in the jar. I had a swirl like look to it. I don’t recall a brand name. It was during the 70’s I don’t know if the product still in being made. To be honest, I don’t recall ever buying the product but seeing on the grocery store shelf by other brands of peanut butter and being intrigued by the color contrast in the jar.

I remember Koogle!!! You could get chocolate peanut butter, vanilla peanut butter and, I think, a caramel peanut butter. We rarely got it because my Mom thought it had too much sugar in it. But it was a treat when we did get it! As for the swirl peanut butter, I have seen it at Wal-Mart and every other grocery store I have been to. I can’t remember the name of it but they still sell it. I have never been brave enough to try it, though. Does anyone have an opinion on the low fat peanut butter (Smart Balance, for example)?

The swirled peanut butter/grape jelly in a jar is called Goober and is made by Smuckers. While not a big fan of it, I always like the cool look of swirled jars.

So, no weird recipes or anything, but I wanted to share a discovery. Skippy makes a natural peanut butter with no hydrogenated oils in it, and ( un-like other healthy ones) it TASTES like what the kids like. Plain o’ skippy’s! It’s just a little more expensive, but I can eat/serve it guilt free!

They still sell the peanut butter and jelly in the same jar, it looks like stripes, think it is Jif or skippy, I can’t tell you exactly because it is in my desk drawer at work. Does the fact I have an AARP card give you some idea of how good it is?
