Do you grill or barbecue?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
I admit, I have been guilty of misusing those terms. But then again, I am a northerner who wasn’t raised on barbecue. It wasn’t until moving here that I was firmly given an education about the difference between grilling and barbecuing.
I learned that when I throw a steak over direct heat that’s grilling. When I slowly cook a pork shoulder over low heat, preferably with smoke, and top it with sauce that’s barbecuing.
Do you use the terms grilling and barbecuing synonymously or are you semantically correct when it comes to outdoor cooking terminology? Has anyone wigged out if you used the references incorrectly? Do you get mad when people use them wrongly?

Good BBQ always means a smokey flavor to me…However a good grill should not taste like lighter fluid or gas flame….it should have a nice char flavor.

If you want to save yourself some grief, just tell people it’s a ‘Cook-out’…that covers either method provided your BBQ didn’t come from a crockpot or your steak from the oven

I never really thought about it but I guess I call whatever I do outside barbequing and what I do inside grilling. I guess according to your definitions my terms are correct since I always cook with charcoal outside (I just prefer the taste). One thing that might disqualify me is that I don’t use sauce when I cook outside. I do sometime pour sauce over chicken and bake it and call it barbequed chicken. I guess technically it’s baked chicken cooked in barbeque sauce.

If you have a grill inside your hooim (some people do these days) you could grill inside…If your using your oven, then likely your broiling or baking…whole different elephant.
