What’s For Dinner?

Would you, could you, eat cereal for dinner?

My husband, while wonderful in so many ways, has one strange idiosyncrasy when it comes to dining. He believes that certain foods should be enjoyed during specific times of the day, and that’s that.

Cereal is no doubt a breakfast food, as are eggs, waffles and pancakes. Sandwiches are for lunch, unless they are so spiffed up that they are barely recognizable as sandwiches, and their names alone are as big as a dinner plate, like a grilled chicken with pancetta and basil mayonnaise on a kaiser roll. Hot dogs are lunch food too, unless they are dinner-sized dogs by Hebrew National and are served with the works.

Dinner doesn’t have to be meat and three. It just has to be substantial. He’s willing to even go as far as having a main course salad as long as there’s protein of some sort and an entire baguette to go with it.

I eat whatever whenever. Pizza for breakfast, yogurt for dinner. I couldn’t care less. What about you? Do you watch the clock when deciding what to eat?

Your comment brings back fond memories of those rare occasions when my Mom would surprise us with “breakfast for dinner”. It would usually consist of pancakes and an omelet. My sister and I would giggle with delight over this strange concept!

My husband and I are new empty-nesters and we have been known to have cereal for dinner over this past year. After years and years of feeding a family of five, we feel positively decadent coming home, eating that bowl of cereal, and relaxing a bit. It’s liberating!

Though it is not part of our normal rotation, my wife and I both have a bowl or two of cereal for dinner from time to time. We will sometimes just grab what is quickest if we are tired or just don’t want to deal with fixing a proper meal.

Karen, I had much the same experience as a child when my Mom would break out breakfast for dinner. Seemed so odd at the time though now I understand. In fact I think I’ll schedule a breakfast for dinner next week sometime. I’ve been wanting a big breakfast at home recently so that may work out well.

Stan, I’m, glad to know that we’re not the only ones! I have no idea why my comment appears multiple times…probably something to do with this new apple computer I’m figuring out.

When I was growing up a special treat (always during the winter) was “breakfast for supper”. I still do that once in a while, and regardless of the time of the year, I’m not above scrambling a pan of cheese eggs to get a quick supper on the table.

As far as cereal for supper goes…my kids are older (teens) and my husband works unpredictable hours. If we aren’t all home for supper at the same time, or if we’re picking and choosing among the week’s leftovers, I’m happy to have a bowl of cereal with fruit. Especially if I’ve had a big lunch. For me, one cooked meal a day is plenty, so if I have something hot for lunch, a bowl of cereal for supper is both light and filling.

My husband LOVES breakfast for dinner and he is a cereal fiend so he will eat cereal around the clock. My son likes breakfast for dinner only occasionally but he LOVES to have leftover pizza for breakfast. Like your husband, my son thinks sandwiches are only for lunch. Even if he eats a sandwich at 7:30 pm, he still says it’s lunch. He says you have to use a fork to eat dinner unless you’re having pizza. With the exception of grits and toast, I don’t care for breakfast food (hate eggs, pancakes, etc) so I usually have fruit or yogurt for breakfast.

Oh yea, sometimes we got breakfast for dinner. We loved it.

Sometimes I don’t eat dinner. Sometimes I just don’t feel like cooking for one (my daughter is rarely home for dinner this summer). Sometimes maybe a bowl of cereal, or Ramen noodles will do.

But I do love to cook. I recently purchased one of those grill pans that fits over the burners on your stove top. I haven’t used my oven since, except to make muffins last weekend. I cook just about everything on the grill pan. I can cook an entire meal on it. I’ve even roasted corn on the cobb, along with steak, and Texas Toast.

My husband and I will occasionally prepare breakfast for dinner. He enjoys making waffles from scratch. The occasional omelet for dinner is quite tasty too. Oddly enough, we don’t eat cereal for dinner ever, though I wouldn’t mind it sometimes.
