What cookin’ for Father’s Day?

With father’s day around the corner, it’s time to think of what to make for dad on “his” day.

At our home, we always start with a special breakfast. This is where the kids most like to help out. We usually devise some sort of egg dish, and more importantly, some type of pastry that I help them with. My husband Loves (yes, with a capital L) a pastry. I think this year we’ll make from-scratch cinnamon rolls. Those are always a hit and I just leave them to rise overnight in the fridge so they are ready to bake in the morning. A super easy recipe for those who are baking-challenged is Stay Up All Night Coffee Cake, a monkey bread like confection.

I can’t get it together to predict where we’ll be at lunchtime, so I’ll let that stay its typical free-for-all.

But I know dinner will be a cookout, and since I’m the griller in the family anyway, it won’t be an out of the ordinary activity. I’m going with ribs on Sunday. They’re the kids’ favorite and can I can pre-bake them before heading for the pool, so will just need to reheat them on the grill when we’re ready to eat.

What’s on the menu at your place? Is dad guiding the way or are Mom and the kids planning a surprise?

We were in Kroger earlier in the week and my husband noticed they had crab legs on sale. He has already put in a request for steak, crab legs and a baked potato. I had asked him if he wanted to go out to dinner but he said I could cook it at home and it will taste just as good except all three of us will eat for what we would pay just for his meal if we go out.

I’ll be smoking ribs and watching the Open. My wife will do the sides. There will probably be some Maker’s Mark involved. Then to the bedroom.

Our day starts out at Church where the Mothers fix breakfast for the Fathers, which is reversed on Mothers Day. After church we will be going to a big family get together and we will be serving BBQ with all the trimmings. The wives will be doing all but my BIL is always looking for an excuse to fire up the grill so we will make the BBQ and let him smoke it a little on the grill.

My hole family will be coming over to my house today. We will cook for our dad, grill chicken, etc. Swim in the pool, watch the Open & UGA baseball game. Have a few adult beverages. Just good family fun !

Hubby has requested crab cakes…so will be shopping today for the meat and rest of ingredients. Not sure what I am going to prep along with it. Usually do the from scratch overnight cinnamon rolls (Alton Brown’s recipe)…but I’m too lazy this year…and we just had cinnamon rolls today.

Hubby asked for steak and peanut butter pie. My dad’s also in town, so we’re having grilled T-bones, baked potatoes, organic romaine salad, homemade garlic herb bread (made in the bread machine), and the peanut butter pie for dessert. I don’t know what to do for breakfast. It’s too hot to bake anything. Maybe I’ll run out and pick up biscuits somewhere.

Forgot to mention that the baked potatoes will bake all day in the crock pot, and the PNB pie is no-bake. Gotta keep the house cool!

For Father’s Day, I am going to the cemetery. My Father has been gone for 26 years, but I still miss him every day.

Enjoy your Father while you can—treasure every moment.

My dad likes to sit under the shade trees and read his bible or do puzzles. So I bought him this really cool strong and sturdy swing set. I have one just like it and it is very nice. Holds up alot of weight. Anyway, I hope he likes it so much he gets over being mad at me. He is mad. I thought I’d have to take the swing over in the cover of darkness, Haha. But I just took it over when he left for church. So when he gets back it’ll be sitting there. I taped a card to it. I hope he calls me. He may call me to tell me to come get it. He don’t like for you to buy him nothing anyway. But he’s mad this year. As far as cooking…I’m sure my husband and I will cook out something on the grill and swim later today. I love my daddy and he loves me too. He just has his lip rolled out right now. Happy Fathers Day!!!

My Dad and the kids hit the garden yesterday morning. The kids love to help their granparents plant.

I was working on some projects that required a kidless environment. So I headed over later in the day.

I asked what they wanted and was willing to cook. Dad would have none of that (though I am a good cook). He grilled burgers and brats to order. Corn and potatoes hit the grill too. Then slaw to round it out. Best burger I have had in a long time.

Dad was just happy to have us all under foot.

I did homemade chicken nuggets his absolute favorite for dinner, with home fries, shoepeg corn and a brownie sundae for dessert.

For breakfast the kids did scrambled eggs, biscuits, bacon and grits with oj. His fav breakfast.

At church the father’s got sundae’s with a multitude of toppings. The men for mother’s day lay out a 30 ft long table of decadence—chocolate anything you can possibly want. They buy us bowls that we get to pick the design/color we want then use that to fill to the brim. Let’s see, since we have lived here, I have nine lovely bowls I use for serving, cereal, soup, candy, etc. The dad’s get either sundaes w/or without a brownie or floats.

Our dads live in another state. So no cooking for them.

My father died last year and the year before that my best friend’s dad died. So we spent the day together. We went to Wired and Fired in Virginia Highlands painted pottery ate sushi, chips and dip, chicken fingers, carrot cake, and Sprites. We painted chatted about our boyfriends, dads, elections, and of course gas. We had a blast. I’m sure our dad’s were watching us from heaven saying look at our babies….
