Grilling - A battle of the sexes?

With Memorial Day approaching, many of us will be firing up our outdoor grills, some for the first time this season.

I know people say grilling is “man’s” domain, but I know I can barely get my husband to switch out the gas tank, let alone handle cooking duty. Whether it’s burgers, kebabs or steaks, it’s yours truly out there flipping and basting.

It seems to me that grilling takes as much skill as any type of indoor cooking. In fact, there seem to be even more variables for getting things just right. What makes the legions of male “weekend warriors” willing to tackle this culinary adventure while managing to stay clear of anything involving a stove?

Is it just me out there? Are gals really not grillers? What makes grilling a “man’s job”; and are the men actually doing it?

I am a female and I love to grill. Of course, it does not take a Holiday like for Memorial Day for me to fire up the old trusy. I have to admit though I learned from the best, my boyfriend, Leaky! He taught me everything I know about the grill and cooking.

I agree with reservoir, if you got the skills, you can handle the grill, male or female. One place you do see mainly guys working the grill is on a saturday afternoon in Athens. I think that is due to 2 things: 1. guys like to grill and end up congregating around it. 2. girls have a lot of socializing to do. On that note, I can’t wait for Fall!!!

Not me! Hubby does all the grilling. I fry the chicken and green tomatoes and he grills the steaks and chops. Of course I marinade them to taste so I guess I have a hand in it too.

My mother thought nothing of firing up the Weber if that was what she wanted, or if it was required for what her dinner menu called for. And my sister is the same way. As for my wife, she doesn’t have a clue, but I’m sure would gladly learn if she had to. But from the very start I told her it was something I enjoy, and she enjoys not having to do anything but sit down to eat.

My husband sincerely believes he’s THE grillmaster, however, I’m the one who does all the work. We use charcoal and hickory chips and he can’t even start a proper fire! I season/marinate the meat & start the fire. He puts the meat on the grill (I’ll admit, he’s good at postioning when he doesn’t overload & smother the coals) then comes back inside to the AC. I’m the one who adjusts the air vents when needed, baste & turn the meat when needed and (usually) take it off the grill. Then he beams as the compliments flow. His mother (knowing his routine) loves to ask him for his secret! LOL

My husbands stepdad and my sister’s husband really are the BBQ masters. Either of them can run rings around me in their sleep.

Absolutely not! My ex tried to grill twice and almost burned the house down each time. Then all the meat was charred on the outside and raw on the inside. Yikes!

What is interesting is that we all have a desire to nurture other with food and with our love of preparing food. Sorry that may sound silly, but it is fun to cook and even more fun to see others enjoy the fruits of your labor. My husband totally hogs the grill duties and I love it. It is great to have help in food preparation and he takes genuine pride in what he cooks. It’s nice.

The wife and I both love cooking in general, but grilling and smoking is a major hobby of mine. I do all my own marinades and rubs and sauces.

If your husband and/or boyfriend does not like to grill, I feel for him as this is one of the most relaxing and rewarding things a man can do. I also feel if your man will not grill, you got the wrong guy!

What a ridiculously inane topic for a post. This makes me ask myself more than ever why I read this pathetic excuse for a news source. The Onion is more real than this rag.

Male or female, it really doesn’t matter. my husband used to boil the meat first until i taught him how to grill and then that made him a better griller. However, he passed a month ago and I am back out here by myself. Ugh

Grilling is not just for the guys. This weekend I grilled ribs, chicken and hot dogs. They were delicious. My husband was very impressed. He had to work so I stepped in. I drew from experience of watching my dad, brothers and husband. Looking forward to doing it again, but I won’t tell my husband that:)

My man has always done the grilling. I have never grilled anything in my life and I’m proud of it. Why? Because I do ALL the other cooking (I cook everything from scratch every night), so surely he can handle the grilling. What makes our marriage of 23 years work is that we each do our own thing.

What’s funny is that my mother taught me how to do the grilling. My mother could seasont he meat to perfection and manipulate that charcoal very well, while my father couldn’t do wither. Oh yeah for the record, gas grills are not grilling, it’s just a stove outside.

HA! HA! I couldn’t put anything on the grill to save the gas prices, but I can cook in the kitchen. My moms husband can really grill, I just season.

I do all the grilling, my husband decided he wanted to grill baby back ribs for a party once so I let him, they were charred to a crisp black and any meat that was left on the bones was dry and tasteless. So, I do all the cooking in the kitchen and the grill. I would love for him to learn how but he has no interest anymore.

My honey does the grilling outside and I do everything else on the stove. We pass each other throughout the whole ordeal and he’ll smack my butt- and I’ll do him good after we eat and the kids have gone to bed!

LOL! You know why guys rule the BBQ? Because we women have to be in the kitchen so dang much already! We do our best to make them think they’re the only ones who can man the outdoor grill! And thank Goodness for it, too!

Sorry to hijack the thread, but after reading this, I just took a peek at the related article on Barbecue basics & sauce recipes…right off the bat, I can tell you in no uncertain terms, you could not be more wrong about BBQ sauce. There are at least three distinct sauces - ketchup based, is mentioned, vinegar-pepper, and mustard-based…..get a grip!

Maybe your editor wrote the headline. I don’t know….But, as a Southerner, I find in offensive that the flagship publication of the New South would call a grill a ‘barbeque’. BBQ is the product of some form of smoking, not the act of grilling weiners.

And to answer your question, I rule both the grill and the smoker at my house.

The real reason MOST men do the grilling is so the ladies can get the rest of the meal ready: potato salad, barbequed beans, deviled eggs slaw, keep track of the kids, welcome the guests, make sure the bathroom is clean, see that there is enough h. patties for everyone, makes sure no one is drowning in the pool, pouring a glass of tea for one child and opening a can of coke for another, asking the visiting men if they want another drink, check to see why this child is crying and the other child is already eating the deviled eggs, checking to see that the other women are cool and comfortable, checking with her “man” if he needs more basting sauce, “opps”, the doorbell is ringing, someone spilled something in the kitchen, is that child stuck in the commode again, do we have enough hotdog and h. buns, just one thing more thing and I’ll take a break, IS THERE ENOUGH BEER IN THE FRIDGE FOR ALL THOSE COOKS OUTSIDE? By the way, I am 72 years old and always worked the grill so that all the above things could be taken care. HAPPY GRILLING TO EVERYONE WHOEVER THE GENDER MAY BE. AND THANKS TO THE LADIES…

I like my setup. I cook; she cleans. That works out great because she’s afraid of the kitchen and I hate cleaning.
